State News Bolled Down. Work has been resumed on the gas well at Salinas, which, when operations were suspended a year ago, had reshed a depth of 1,150 feet. It is now down 1,088 feet, but as yet the expected flow of gas has not materialized, though the well has a fine stream of water. A vigorous effort is being made by the county officials of Wyoming to collect taxes on the large bands of sheep that are being driven across that State by non-residents. The Treasurer and Assessor of Laramie county overhaul a band of 8,000 owned by a Denver man the other day, and collected taxes of him. Two weeks ago a San Jose grape grower ordered a thousand grapes from a San Francisco firm in which to ship his grapes East. A few days later he sent a telegram countermanding the order, as the rains had destroyed his crop. The State of Oregon is to have a dishwashing machine invented by a woman among the exhibits at the World's Fair. It is the first machine of the kind that has ever proved a success. Dishes will be washed and wiped in the presence of the public. Arrangements are being made between the Bear Valley Irrigation Company, the Laguna Water Company and H. L. Williams, whereby 1,800 acres over in San Bernardino county will be supplied with water for the first time. It will be delivered in steel pipes under pressure. Thousands of people in San Joaquin county attended the celebration of the completion of the dam of the Woodbridge Canal and irrigation Company at Woodbridge last Friday. The dam is 200 feet long and 18 feet high. The canal is 14 miles long. In the Arroyo de las Posas, at Boyle Heights, in Los Angeles, an old well seventy-five or eighty feet in depth is a source of constant fear and annoyance to parents of small children living near. The well was originally sunk for oil by Alfred Moore, and is on the land from which he was some time ago ousted to the city. The matter has been reported by the local police, and steps will be taken to fill it up. The Chilean Times of October 15th, in its account of the slaughter of students on August 17th by the order of Balmaceda, says: Don Wenceslao Aranguiz was subjected to unspeakable horrors. He was bound to a tree and was beaten and out with sabres and swords to compel him to disclose the hiding place of Don Charles Walker Martinez. As he insisted that he know nothing of the hiding place of his employer, first one leg and then the other was broken, paraffine was thrown over him and set fire to, but the quantity was limited so as to prolong his agony, which lasted nearly an hour. In the midst of his horrible sufferings he appealed MISCELLANEOUS. FRANTZ'S BARBER-SHOP. Hot and Cold Baths, 25 Cents. First-Class Style. OFFICE OF SANTA ANA Steam Laundry. Dated this 5th day of October, A. The Chilean Times of October 15th, in its account of the slaughter of students on August 17th by the order of Balmaceda, says: Don Wenceslao Aranguize was subjected to unspeakable horrors. He was bound to a tree and was beaten and out with sabres and swords to compel him to disclose the hiding place of Don Charles Walker Martinez. As he insisted that he know nothing of the hiding place of his employer, first one leg and then the other was broken, paraffin was thrown over him and set fire to, but the quantity was limited so as to prolong his agony, which lasted nearly an hour. In the midst of his horrible sufferings he appealed to his tormentors to kill him at once and put him out of his misery, but they mocked and rallied his applications. The bodies of the remainder of the victims were subjected to unheard of atrocities. Some were out in two in the middle, and the parts were suspended by cords from trees amid ferrocious and demoniacal yells. The busts of others were placed upon benches in the corridors, and their eyes were picked out with bayonets, tongues were out out, ears and noses were out off. Later on the greater portion of the mutilated bodies and remains were collected together and burned. The remainder of the bodies were taken next day to Santiago, but so horribly were they muti-lated and disfigured that it was with great difficulty that they could be identified. All the bodies had been stripped of watches, jewelry, money and everything of value. Greeley's Masterful Speech. Delivered in Santa Ana August 24th in favor of the county high school: "We did not expect there would be any opposition to the matter when it was first brought up. No county is so well situated for a county high school. There is no community but that could send pupils to the high school. The opposition so strongly waged is not an opposition to the high school. They don't talk high school; they talk against Santa Ana—to down Santa Ana. The opposition have gone so far as to look up the law to see who is going to be benefited. They say Santa Ana wants a Courthouse, and they urge that they will teach those Santa Ana fellows that they don't run Orange county. There would be no opposition if these people thoroughly understood the question, and were not led astray by their prejudices." "And what shall we say," asks the Orange News, "of our School Superintendent? Our cheeks mantle with shame that any official of Orange county should descend so low as to appeal to the lowest and most brutal passions of the human breast for the purpose of carrying a point! Nothing in the annals of anarchism could be worse than this! Will Santa Ana permit herself to be played upon and her jealousy fanned into a flame by every demagogue who wishes to use her? Have we not declared over and over that we merely wish to discuss and protect our mutual interests, those of the whole county? When will Santa Ana feel so secure and at the same time be so disposed to deal justly that she can say: 'Come let us reason together over this matter.'" Children Cry for Pitcher's Castoria.
