STATE NEWS BOILED DOWN The case against the Itata has been dismissed. The plains of Tulare county are said to be covered with baldheaded jack rabbits. Parties scalped them for the bounty and turned them loose again. A raisin dryer on the vineyard of D. D. Hudson, two miles east of Fresno, was burnt to the ground one night last week with nearly a carload of raisins. The fire is supposed to have started from some one on the vineyard dropping a lighted cigar, as there had been no fire in the dryer for several days. The San Diego Superior Court has released Breedlove, the murderer of sailor Brown of the Charleston, on $10,000 bail. This is said to be the first time a convicted prisoner awaiting sentence has ever been admitted to bail in San Diego county. A motion for a new trial is pending, and Judge Paterbaugh, before whom the case was tried, is ill and unable to attend to the business of his department. Great excitement prevails among the farmers along the boundary line between Ohio and Indiana in consequence of the rumor that the United States surveyors have discovered that there is a serious error in the established line between the two States. It is also asserted that the line between Indiana and Illinois is too far east, and when it is corrected a large part of Chicago, including the World's Fair site, will be in Indiana. The funeral director of the Pomona Progress has been to see what it costs to embalm a body for shipment East, and furnishes the following valuable statistics on the subject: It costs from $360 to $500 to embalm and take a body to the far East for burial. The embalment is $100; casket from $90 to $200, and the first-class railroad fare for some person who must always accompany the remains and for the body itself cost from $155 to $180. Incidentals usually foot up $30 more. A call has been issued by the Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles for a Southern California Immigration Convention to take place in Los Angeles Tuesday December 8, 1891. The immigration convention recently held in San Francisco brought no results, and the view is quite generally entertained that the State is too large and its interests too diversified to admit of one organization covering the entire territory. Hence the Los Angeles convention. The suit of Barrett vs. the Southern Pacific Company, which will be remembered as the Santa Ana turntable case, was settled last week by the railroad company, who drew their check for the sum of $4,420 in full, for judgment. The child, Barrett, lost his leg from the effects of injuries sustained to enable her to get drunk for the last time at my expense." The wills in which the testator endeavored to put a last sting into his enemy are numerous. John Aylett Stow revoked a previous bequest of £3,000 and substituted the direction to purchase, for a terrible reminder to the ungrateful exlegatee, "a picture of a viper biting the benevolent hand of the person who saved him from perishing in the snow," while a Mr. Church left to his son Daniel "only I shilting, and that is for him to hire a porter to carry away the next badge and frame he steals." Seated together in a Broadway car were five Chinamen, all chewing gum. It was evidently their first experience with this deadly form of dissipation, but they were enjoying it immensely. They chewed and champed together and chattered away in their native tongue in the most animated fashion. The other passengers in the car were much interested, and watched the misguided Chinamen intently. The Ah Sins were as oblivious to the other passengers as if they were in the fantasy of an opium dream. By their gestures and gibberish they made it plain to the spectators that they were discussing the deep mysteries of the slot machine from which they had extracted the gum. They also discussed the gun itself. They would hold it between their teeth, stretch it out until it would break, thrust it back into their months, chewing and chattering all the time. A ministerial looking man sitting opposite made a gesture of disapproval to one of the Chinamen. A smile stole into the slant eyes of the Celestial as he stopped chewing long enough to remark: "Chinaman like allee same."—New York Advertiser. Regulars Off Duty. "I want to show you the effects of constant training," said a local military enthusiast. We were standing on Whitehall street. "You see those two regulars from McPherson barracks coming this way," said he, pointing toward two private soldiers from the barracks. They were walking very rapidly, but with as regular a step as though on dress parade. "Now watch them. I will give a command as they come up and I'll bet a cigar they instinctively obey it." "It's a bet." Business Charter MY HOUSE and ST For Sale CHARLES PAMILI Dealer in... The immigration convention recently held in San Francisco brought no results, and the view is quite generally entertained that the State is too large and its interests too diversified to admit of one organization covering the entire territory. Hence the Los Angeles convention. The suit of Barrett vs. the Southern Pacific Company, which will be remembered as the Santa Ana turntable case, was settled last week by the railroad company, who drew their check for the sum of $4,200 in full, for judgment. The child, Barrett, lost his leg from the effects of injuries sustained while playing about an open turntable at Santa Ana a couple of years ago. The suit for damages brought by the child's guardian has been stubbornly contested through all counts of appeal. The Fruit-Growers' Union of Southern California met in Los Angeles last Friday. The Superintendent made his report, claiming that the organization last year broke the buyers' combine. The following points were decided upon: The immediate appointment of agents at Chicago and other large centers; that the union issue weekly or semi-weekly bulletins and that packing-houses be established at convenient point; in charge of the union. Representative orange-growers were elected officers and directors, and most of the members pledged themselves to handle their oranges exclusively through the union. A scam by the name of C. W. Brown, who is infesting Los Angeles and Orange counties, is swindling the orchardists by boring holes in their trees, says a San Francisco paper, filling the same with some kind of powder and plugging the holes up, guaranteeing that every disease and insect affecting the tree will be destroyed by the absorption of the powder into the sap. We have not heard of the scam in this neighborhood, but it is safe to say he will not have much "boring" to do down this way. He may be bored himself if he comes here. The Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce is making an effort to collect a carload of exhibit material to be shown at the national convention of the Farmers' Alliance, which will be held at Indianapolis, Ind., the 17th inst. It suggests that some one here take a wagon and canvass the place for such products as our people may deem expedient to send. It is expected that about 15,000 farmers will attend the convention, in which event the opportunity of advertising the agricultural resources of the county will be a good one. George E. Holden, a wealthy bachelor of sporting prolixities who arrived at Pomona last week on the Santa Fe Railroad from Chicago, claims to have been robbed of $3,700 in gold and currency and about $4,600 in government bonds between Albqnquorque and Pomona. He had been attending the races in New York and started for this region because of poor health, so soon that he did not have time to buy a bank draft in New York. He carried a small handbag, as he has done at the races for many years. He blames no one but himself for the loss, and says it was caused by his own carelessness and forgetfulness. He suspects two women in the sleeping-car of being his robbers, but admits that he has no proof of their guilt. He will make no complaint for arrest. He has telegraphed to New York for more funds. The Chino sugar factory concluded running on beets last week. It has consumed 11,117 tons of beets, turning out 1,500,200 pounds of sugar. The factory is shut down until it can be ascertained from Washington whether it will be permitted to hold its Regulars Off Duty. The Chino sugar factory concluded running on beets last week. It has consumed 11,117 tons of beets, turning out 1,500,200 pounds of sugar. The factory is shut down until it can be ascertained from Washington whether it will be permitted to hold its syrups over until next season before they are run through the machinery and reduced. They claim that if syrups are permitted to age a little they will crystallize easier, and aver it will be a hardship upon them if the Government should compel them to run new syrups. The penalty which the Government provides for not so doing is that it will not pay a bounty on sugar manufactured from anything that is not of the season being run. Syrups are a product obtained in the process of manufacture of sugar, and so great is the quantity that it will take the factory six weeks to work them. The Oxnards will see if the Government will not make an exception to the law in the case of the Chino factory. If this is done, however, the same favor will be claimed by the 600 factories in Louisiana. A bare faced swindle being perpetrated throughout the East by one Walter J. Raymond has just been exposed. Raymond is operating Dayton, O., by means of plausible circulars and is selling what he claims to be fine fruit land situated near Cactus station, on the Southern Pacific Railroad, for $100 an acre to gullible Easterners. Cactus station is in the midst of the Colorado desert, and the sandy stretch of country around there would be dear at 50 cents per acre. Raymond did a land office business and was getting rich rapidly. Queer Wills. Odd wills have been sustained by the courts these many years. There was Theluson's will, often quoted, which left £600,000 to accumulate through the lives of his sons and grandson, the accumulated property to be paid to his oldest great-grandson on the death of the sons and grandson, or else to be conveyed to the sinking fund for the payment of the British national debt. It was calculated that the accumulations would amount to £19,000,000 by the time it fell due, but there was much litigation over the matter, and the oldest great-grandson received only about the original £600,000. There was the will of David Davis of Clapham, who left a lady 5 shillings, "sufficient Castoria For Infants and Children. Castoria promotes Digestion, and overcomes Flatulency, Constipation, Sour Stomach, Diarrhoea, and Feverishness. Thus the child is rendered healthy and its sleep natural. Castoria contains no Morphine or other narcotic property. "Castoria is so well adapted to children that I recommend it as superior to any prescription known to me." H. A. Anciker, M. D. 111 South Oxford St., Brooklyn, N. Y. "I use Castoria in my practice and find it specially adapted to practice of children." Alex Ronnarsox, M. D. 1037 31 Ave., New York. "From personal knowledge and observation I can say that Castoria is an excellent medicine for children, acting as a laxative and relieving the pent up bowels and general system very much. Many mothers have told me of its excellent effect upon their children." Dn. G. C. Osooon, Lowell, Mass. The Centaur Company, 7 Murray Street, N.Y.
