STATE NEWS BOILED DOWN
Some parties cultivating land in the vicinity of Lodi pay $13 an acre for water for irrigation. The water is pumped by steam power from the Mokelumne river, but despite this enormous rental the farmers say they can make money off the land.
The meanest man of the season turned up at Carson the other day, and he is beginning young. He recently demurred to the publication of the details of a party given in honor of his twenty-first birthday because he was afraid he would have to pay poll-tax if it came to the ears of the collector.
A special excursion of 500 visitors ran over from Riverside to the Chino sugar factory the other day. They had a brass band along, and had a great time. The factory expected to close its season run this week, but the continued warm weather is ripening the late beets, and this will enable it to operate for some time yet.
About 600 carloads of rains have so far gone East from Freeso this season. The shipments are now averaging a trainload of twenty cars each per day. The present estimates are that the total shipment for this season will reach 1,000 carloads, or about 160 more than last year. A few packing houses will close this week, while all will close from two to three weeks earlier than last year.
The Santa Fe Company is making preparations to thoroughly develop the business of raising early vegetables for the Chicago market. It is expected shortly to send solid vegetable trains through from Southern California points on the same time as passenger trains, the estimate being that Chicago can consume and distribute 100 cars of vegetables a day. The freight rates will be made satisfactory, and every encouragement given the farmers.
G. J. Griffith, a prominent capitalist of Los Angeles, and owner of Los Felix rancho, well known here, was shot and seriously wounded near the Catholic cemetery at Los Angeles last Thursday by a man named Burkett, who immediately committed suicide by shooting himself through the head. Burkett had bad litigation with Griffith and lost his case, which caused him to brood over the subject and finally prompted him to his final set. Griffith is recovering.
The San Antonio Electric Power Company has been organized at Pomena, with a capital of $80,000, for the novel purpose of utilizing the water power in the canyons in that region.
Contracts have been let for digging a tunnel 1,200 feet into ten sandstone mountains for the purpose of developing 1,600 inches of water. This water will be used for generating about 1,100 horse-power for furnishing electric power and electric lights for Pomena, Chino and Ontario and then for use in irrigating 1,800 acres of land in the Po towns are new and the two classes do not work in harmony. With the popular sentiment so aroused, it seems not improbable that the county seat will be moved.
Hat and Cap Dofling.
There are many of us who still fail to comprehend how any rational being, how the Almighty himself, could feel honored by the uncovering of a human creature's cranium; and I am old fashioned enough to be reminded of certain historical sayings regarding the doffing of head coverings.
George Fox used to ask if the very Turks did not mock at the Christians in their proverb which said that "the Christians spend much of their time in pulling off their hats and exhibiting their bare heads to each other."
His contemporary, George Keith, wrote: "The preachers of Germany, and especially at Hamburg, which I have seen with my eyes, use such gross partiality in their salutations that commonly they have two caps under their hata. The poor, except extraordinarily, they pass by without any notice; to others they doff the hat; others more rich in the world they salute with dofing the hat and one of the caps; and to those whom they most honor, or rather flatter, they doff the hat and both caps."
And did not our W. Penn say, in a more serious vein: "The first and most pressing motive upon our spirits to decline the practice of these present customs of pulling off the hat, bowing the body or knee, and giving people gaudy titles and epithets in our salutations and addresses, was that savor, sight and sense that God, by his light and spirit, has given us of the Christian world's apostasy from God, and the cause and effects of that great and lamentable defection."—American Notes and Queries.
Man's Treatment of the Dog.
In nothing does social usage show such a brutal paradox as in its treatment of the dog. It coddles and nurtures him when he is worthless. It kills him ruthlessly when he is valuable. It supports high toned kennel clubs for his propagation, and it makes laws to destroy him at sight. It licenses the brute and puts a premium on him and it gives ignorant justice the power to order him shot. It preaches his fidelity and affection with one breath and calls for his extermination with another. There is more miscellaneous.

"Yes," said a young lady from Colorado to a class of boys in one of the Riverside Sunday schools, "Yes, boys, God made every animal for some use. He made the horse that we may drive and ride. He made the sow so that we may have beef and milk; and now," she added, wishing to try the intelligence of the class, "can any one tell me why God made the sheep?" There was silence for a moment, but only for a moment, for the red-haired boy in the corner spoke out triumphantly: "Please, ma'am, he made the sheep so we could have fertilizer for the orange groves."
The Grand Jury of Sacramento county have returned an indictment against W. M. Reed, a farmer, who resides in that county, charging him with libel in the Farmers Alliance meeting a few weeks ago. Read in a vigorous speech (declared) that three members of the Board of Supervisors had received $15,000 for their votes to kill a certain ordinance which was in opposition to the liquor dealers. He quoted as authority the proprietor of a Sacramento winery, who declared had told him he collected money from the saloon-keepers. When approached by the Supervisors the winemaker denied having made such a statement. Reed was then arrested on the charge of libel and released on $1,000 bail.
Referring to a statement made by a San Diego county Superior at Riverside that glanders is prevalent to a great extent in Los Angeles county, Dr. I. W. Cowper, County Stook Inspector, asserts that, on the contrary, Los Angeles county is at present singularly free from the disease. Three or four cases have been reported within the last month, but prompt action has been taken to prevent the spread of the disease. Stook owners sometimes run infected horses into the city to sell them, but they are at once shot. Dr. Cowper says the disease is much more prevalent in San Diego than in Los Angeles county. He adds that there is not so much danger of its transmission as is generally supposed. Unless horses water at the same trough they may work side by side without catching it.
According to the annual statement furnished by the County Auditor of Los Angeles county to the State Controller the total value of taxable property in the county, exclusive of railroads, after the 15-percent raise made by the State Board of Equalization, is $80,357,521. The State taxes on this amount are $358,394 53, and the county taxes $526,135 90—a total of $884,529 44. The bonded indebtedness of the county on September 26th last was $914,500. Of these outstanding bonds worth $142,500 draw 4½ per cent, and $180,000 draw 5 per cent. There is in the county treasury $42,966 97 in cash, which is applicable to the payment of this indebtedness, while the estimate of the valuation of the county property is as follows:

I can take you tomorrow to half a score of professional dog fanciers, who to guard your pet against hydrobizia will undertake to extract the worm from his tongue or to bite the last joint of his tail off. For a hundred years they have put roll brimstone in his drinking water as a prophylactic without ever once knowing that water does not dissolve brimstone. The dog is the best loved and the least understood of man's brute companions.—Nyn Crinkle in New York Recorder.
The duration of a raspberry plantation depends upon the variety cultivated as well as upon the nature of the soil and care given to plants. Ten to fourteen years is about the average under good culture.

The crop bulletin reports that if favorable weather continues bean threshing in Ventura will be finished in another week. Antelope valley will, this week, make its sixth outing of alfalfa, giving $100 an acre gross for alfalfa hay on irrigated lands that five years ago were considered worthless. Between Los Angeles and the ocean the yield of barley has been enormous. Raisin, prune and walnut drying is in full blast, the quality being very satisfactory. The drying of other fruits is nearly over, a few late peaches remaining. The season has been exceptionally favorable for raisin making. The grain crop of the San Joaquin ranch, Orange county, will aggregate 170,000 sacks, mostly barley. The season just closing has been on the whole, a very favorable one both to the grain and fruit farmer, good prices prevailing for most products.
The contest over the division of San Bernardino county, which assumed such importance at the last session of the Legislature, is now taking on a new phase. Riverside, Colton, Chino and Ontario are interested in having San Bernardino county divided. Redlands during the contest last winter was the only ally of San Bernardino. Since then the Supervisors have submitted to the people the proposition of issuing $350,000 in bonds for a new courthouse and jail, which the people voted down. The Supervisors then declared that the courthouse would be built in spite of the popular verdict. They proceeded to levy a tax for this purpose. Now the people of Ontario, Riverside, Colton, Banning, Beasumont, Chino and Redlands are agitating the removal of the county seat to Redlands, and as San Bernardino is powerful in dealing with the combination, very interesting results are expected. The fact that the county seat was never settled by a popular vote is said to give a majority of the people power to remove the seat at any time they choose. The real animus of this affair dates far back. San Bernardino is a very old town, founded by the Mormons. All other
