STATE NEWS BOILED DOWN The first play's business of the recently opened Orange-Growers' Bank at Riverside amounted to $60,000. Oregon's funds are exhausted, the Legislature not having levied taxes enough to meet its appropriations. It is said that 12,000 quail have been killed in Mexico and marketed in the United States since the season opened, October 1st. Mrs. Bayard Taylor, widow of the poet and author, has bought twenty-four acres of land at San Marcos, San Diego county. Riverside has 1,000 acres of raisin vineyards, from which the yield of raisins this year will be 175,000 twenty-pound boxes. A Los Angeles capitalist has offered to advance $200,000 to the farmers of the Cahuenga, to enable them to erect a beet-sugar plant to be operated on the co-operative plan. The permanent nature of some improvements at Riverside may be judged from the fact that an English company is spending $4,000 per mile to cement fourteen miles of its open canals over there. At San Diego incandescent electric lights are lowered into the water at night and a large net is placed below them. The fish are attracted by the glare and are plainly visible. When sufficiently full the nets are hauled up and the catches are said to be enormous. For some time past the bee men up in the San Fernando hills have noticed that many of their colonies of bees were getting very weak, and they have made the discovery that they were being devoured by skunks. A rainbow at night is something new, but that is what Dr. Conger and family of Pascadena, saw the other night. Off toward the mountains a distinct semi-circle was outlined against a heavy bank of fog, being altogether like the regulation rainbow, except that it was colorless. A San Francisco company has purchased a platter of Paris mine near Rincon, which it is working with a force of forty men. The deposit is said to be the finest in the State, and the company proposes to fully develop it. The Santa Ana will be bridged at once, and a track laid from the mine to the Santa Fe track. A number of fires have occurred in San Bernardino lately, all evidently of incendiary origin, and the fire-bug has at last been discovered in the person of George Jeasrang of that place, a prominent citizen, who has for some time past held the position of Deputy County Assessor. He is also Secretary of the local lodge of Odd Fellows and has held a high social position. of SW₁ of SE₂, and E₂ of SE₃ of SW₄, and S₄ of SW₅ of SE₆ of Sec. 2, T 4 S, R 11 W; $2,800. Truman Osborne, one of the evangelists who went through this country many years ago, had a wonderful art in the right direction. He came to my father's house one day, and while we were all seated in the room, he said, "Mr. Talmage, are all your children Christians?" Father said, "Yes, all but Do Witt." Then Truman Osborne looked down into the fireplace and began to tell a story of a storm that came on the mountains, and all the sheep were in the fold; but there was one lamb outside that perished in the storm. Had he looked me in the eye I should have been angered when he told that story; but he looked into the fireplace, and it was so pathetically done that I never found any peace until I was sure I was inside the fold, where the other sheep were.-Dr. Talmage in Ladies' Home Journal. Physical Development as a Guide. Alpaper on the scientific measurement of children was read before the Bromley (England) Naturalists' society. The author, Rev. H. A. Soames, said he found such measurements as he described, taken every term, a good guide as to whether his pupils could be pressed with work or not. If the increase is regular and the weight fair, according to the height, he does not fear to press them; but if on the other hand, the weight is low, or if the height increases and not the weight, or if the increase in height is too rapid, he thinks it a very fair excuse for laziness, and takes great care that too much work is not expected from them. What a "Filled" Case Is. To save the gold and strengthen the case of watches, Joseph Fahy, a clever lad, born in French Switzerland nearly half a century ago, rolled out two plates of gold and putting a plate of compositions into the County of Orange, State of tow: The west county-served to 77 (60) counties of New York One (3) and Ninth Block K of the Kraemer tract, according to said Kraemer tract recorded in book and 88 of the Miscellaneous Records of the County Recorder of the County of Orange. A San Francisco company has purchased the Paris mine near Rincon, which it is working with a force of forty men. The deposit is said to be the finest in the State, and the company proposes to fully develop it. The Santa Ana will be bridged at once, and a track laid from the mine to the Santa Fe track. A number of fires have occurred in San Bernardino Lately, all evidently of incendiary origin, and the firebug has at last been discovered in the person of George Jessarr of that place, a prominent citizen, who has for some time past held the position of Deputy County Assessor. He is also Secretary of the local lodge of Odd Fellows and has held a high social position. A Freno vinoyardist is experimenting on his second crop of rains. He ordered a lot of strong twine and with that he ties up the top of his raisin vines in such a manner as to allow the sun's rays to strike the grapes and ripen them more rapidly. His success was beyond expectation and he got a second order of twine to treat all his vines that way. The idea seems to be a good one. Alexander Craw, quarantine officer of the State Board of Horticulture, has just made a trip to Tallare county for the purpose of investigating a supposed case of yellows. He reports that there was no signs of yellows on the trees which he saw. They were planted in a sandy soil, had been plentifully irrigated, and had not been sufficiently cultivated, so they were slightly scalded during the hot weather. The most successful coyote slayer in the Pomona valley is Robert Alger, who has sent forty-nine coyote scalps to the County Clerk already and has eleven more ready to send. He has received $180 in cash for his bounties thus far. He says he knows a mountain place in San Bernardino county where he can get seventy coyotes during the coming winter, and perhaps 100. He will start on the hunt in December. He says the coyote bounty lay is just his way. He has not made money so easily in ten years. The farmers of the Cahuahua Valley, who are talking about a co-operative boot-sugar factory, have had an offer of the necessary means from a Los Angeles capitalist. Evidently the project inspires confidence, and one example may lead to others, until the sugar-beet growers generally will get the 2 cents a pound bounty without dividing with the manufacturer. It will chiefly depend on the management, which is apt to be the weak point of co-operative enterprises, especially for productive purposes. Distributive co-operation shows many brilliant successes. Estimates are now being made on the Riverado orange crop. Conservative authorities claim that 2,200 carrols will not be far out of the way. Many new orchards are bearing for the first time this year, all of which are producing budded fruit. The crop at present gives strong indications of being the choicest ever known in the valley. The size and shape of the fruit is said to be largely due to the liberal use of fertilizers. The trees are so heavily loaded as to require unusual propping to preserve the branches. A vigorous kick against the Chino sugar factory comes from the people who live below the factory on the Chino creek. The waste water from the factory has coated the height, he does not fear to press them; but if on the other hand, the weight is low, or if the height increases and not the weight, or if the increase in height is too rapid, he thinks it a very fair excuse for laziness, and takes great care that too much work is not expected from them. What a "Filled" Case Is. To save the gold and strengthen the case of watches, Joseph Fahy, a clever born in French Switzerland nearly half a century ago, rolled out two plates of gold and putting a plate of composition metal between a "filled case." Since then he has brought the process to perfection, and his filled cases are now known to every jeweler on earth. They are not plated cases. They would, without the composition metal filling, be a double case thicker than heavy writing paper.—New York Truth. All Curves to Be Made Straight. Some day railroads will have in them no dangerous and deadly currents. Over half the disastrous collisions and a large percentage of run-offs are caused by curves. Of course, it will sometimes be found difficult to straighten out a curve and keep a legitimate grade; but if the laws required all railroads to go straight in all cuts and other dangerous places some plan would be devised by which this could be done.—Dallas (Tex.) Two famous philosophers—Menedemus and Asclepiades—when pursuing their studies at Athens, were enabled to pay for their support and schooling by acting as millers after school hours, receiving the munificent sum of thirty-six cents (two drachm) per night. A vigorous kick against the Chino sugar factory comes from the people who live below the factory on the Chino creek. The waste water from the factory has coated the bed of the creek with a thick slime, and has killed all the fish for nine miles down the creek, and makes such a stench that people cannot endure it. Unless something is done before another season, the people living near the creek will have to move away. A week ago the Supervisors of San Bernardino county sent a commission of three physicians to inspect the infected district and take a few whiffs of the atmosphere. Their report has not yet been published. Daniel Bostwick, who died near Pomona last week, had for nine years asked for a pension himself, for injuries received in the battle of Gettyburg. His company officers and comrades were dead and scattered about the world, so that he could obtain no satisfactory proofs for the Pension Department. He made another attempt at getting a pension last June, and six weeks ago his claim was allowed. Two weeks ago he was notified that he was to receive a monthly pension of $16 and back pay to the amount of over $2,000. He was ill when the news came and Tuesday a week ago he died. In the afternoon came the first payment of his pension in the form of a check from the United States Treasurer for $2,160. The check has been returned to Washington. Real Estate Transfers.
