The Grant Boys.
U. S. Grant, Jr., for he still insists upon adding the distinguishing mark of junior to his name, comes into the city quite frequently, but he spends most of his time upon his farm, in the Harlem Valley, about forty miles from New York. He grows to resemble his father very greatly, and his mother declares that he looks now almost exactly as his father did when he left Galena on his way to offer his services to the Government. Recently Mr. Grant has returned from a visit to his brother Jesse, who is in Mexico, and he reports the brother as on the high road to a fortune. Young Jesse is working in the Mexican mines with Democratic equality with the employees, and though he has dived with the Queen of England and is the son of the great General, yet he handles the pick, when it is necessary, with enthusiasm, and he is paranaded that before many months the mine will have developed a new bonanza. Ex-Senator Platt, ex-Mayor Grace and other business men here who know the Grant boys well declare that Jesse has genuine business ability and business enthusiasm, in that respect differing from his brothers. It would not surprise businessmen here if Jesse one of these days came back to New York a capitalist.—New York letter.
A Life Spent in Prison.
Tuesday week T. Primrose completed a nine-year term in the State Prison at San Quentin, where he had been sent from San Benito county for burglary. Just as he reached the gates and was congratulating himself on once more being a free man he was met by Warden Aull of the State Prison at Folsom who slipped a pair of handcuffs on his wrists and arrested him as an escape from the latter institution. The prisoner is an elderly man and during the past twenty years has spent the greater portion of his time in the penal institutions of this State. In April, 1872, he was sent up for eighteen months from Contra Costa county for grand larceny. Under the name of Thomas Catlan, he was sent back for three years from Monterey in November, 1873, for burglary, and after his release went to Santa Clara, committed another burglary, and March, 1877, found him in the San Quentin Penitentiary with seven years to serve. He was transferred from there to Folsom on July 26, 1880, and soon afterward escaped. No trace of him was found until August 7, 1885, when he was received at San Quentin to serve nine years for grand larceny committed in Hollister.
Holes in Their Stockings.
"One of the latest things out," said an observant polioeman to a New York reporter the other day, "is the woman with a hole in the heel of her stocking. I mean they make 'em there, you know, so as to show off. I've been on this corner for years and I never saw so many women with holes in their stockings. Of course, it is not exactly square to look but a blind man couldn't help but..."

The Commissioner protests that the unsatisfactory experience following the granting of swamp lands to the States cannot properly be urged against the plan proposed for the settlement of the arid lands question.
Why He Resigned.
Frederick Douglass, ex-Minister to Hayti, was in the city a day or two ago on business. To a New York friend he related this story regarding his reception in the Black republic:
"When I arrived at Port au Prince I received a perfect ovation. Not only was I welcomed by the officials, but by the populace also. I could not make a step without being surrounded by dozens of street Arabs who wanted to shake my hand. Of course I felt highly gratified, and this gratification was greatly increased when after a few days I heard these children sing, whenever I appeared on the streets, what sounded to me something like 'Hail to the Chief.' But as it was in French I could not understand the words. So one day I asked an American merchant, who has been living there for many years, to translate the words for me. To my horror I discovered that the song of acclaim, as I thought, was nothing more nor less than a French version of the American negro minstrel song:
There's a new coon in town,
There's a new coon in town.
"Therefore, I say it is unwise to send a Minister to a foreign country who does not speak its language, and from that day dates my intention to resign."—New York letter.
Wasn't Quite Hendy to Shoot, but—
A Texan, with white slouch hat, and big boots, fresh from the plains evidently walked through the aisles of the St. Louis Exposition the other day, smoking a big cigar.
It was a bad one, too, and the Exposition policeman who rushed up to him felt that he had reason to be doubly indignant.
"You can't smoke in here, don't you know that," he said to the Texan.
"All right, parl, I won't," said the Texan calmly.
"Don't get yourself in a fret." He took the cigar in his hand, held it till it went out and then putting it back in his mouth he continued his walk. The policeman rushed up to him again, much excited this time.
"Here, didn't I tell you to stop that?" he exclaimed.
"I'm not smoking," said the Texan.
"But you've got your cigar in your mouth."
"What!" said the Texan, beginning to get augry. "I've got my gun in my pocket, too, but I'm not shooting—at least not yet."
The policeman looked at him, and walked away, and the man from the Brazos went on his way.

Ever since the establishment of the first paper on the bay of San Francisco, which we believe was the "Alta," removed from Monterey in 1891; the inhabitants of the Coast generally have been interested in the news from San Francisco. The "Alta," like many other pioneers of 49, has succeeded to the inevitable and gone over to the great majority, and, like other pioneers, has been succeeded by younger generations. The "Examiner" has taken perhaps the most prominent place in the newspaper field of late years, and its Weekly edition is very generally taken by those who want an interesting and reliable paper published at "The Bay." Everyone is familiar with the Premium Offers made by Mr. Hearst, the "Examiner's" enterprising publisher, and it is only necessary to say that this year the aggregate value of the premiums—of which there are 5,000—is $135,000, which are distributed among all the subscribers to the paper. In addition to these premiums, which range in value from 50 cents to $7,000, every subscriber receives one of the four great premium pictures, which will be mailed to him in a tube direct from the "Examiner" office as soon as the subscription is received:
"The Retreat from Moscow," by Metssonler.
"The Roman Chariot Race," by A. Wagner.
Each of these pictures is filled with heresy, and they are elegantly reproduced in fine samples, showing every tint and color of the great originals, either one of which could not be purchased for $100,000.
"Women and Children First," by C. Napler Hemy
"Christ Leaving the Praetorium," by Gustave Dore
Each of these pictures is reproduced in photogravure, size 216, and entirely fitted for framing, and will adorn the walls of the most refined home.
The subscription price of the "Weekly Examiner" is $1.00, and subscriptions may be sent either direct to W. K. Hearst, Publisher, San Francisco, through the Local Agent of the "Examinet" or Postmaster.
