George Jones Died.
George Jones, editor of the New York Times, died at Poland Springs, Me., last Wednesday. He was one of the foremost editors of the country, and his paper wielded a national influence.
The step that gave the Times its greatest prominence was the exposure by it of the Tweed ring. The story of that sensation is worth repeating. While James O'Brien was Sheriff of New York county he got a place in the Controller's office for a protege of his name Copeland. This man had charge of the city and county ledgers. He saw enormous sums of money passing through the department, and suspecting that something was wrong he made a transcript of the figures and showed them to O'Brien. O'Brien had no love for Tweed at this time, and he took the figures, with all his evidence, to a New York daily newspaper for publication. The paper examined the matter and returned it. Then O'Brien took his figures and his other evidences of fraud to Mr. Jones.
The Times decided to publish the figures and make a full exposure of the ring's stalkings. When this determination was communicated to O'Brien he took away the papers, but brought them back in a few weeks, and told Mr. Jones to go ahead with the publication. O'Brien never made any condition as to the publication, nor did he ask for any compensation for furnishing the proof of the Tweed frauds.
By some means unknown to Mr. Jones, Tweed learned that the proofs of his guilt were in the hands of the Times. He sent a man to Mr. Jones and offered to buy the paper at any valuation that might be put on it. This offer was made in cash, to be paid at once. Mr. Jones replied that he did not propose to sell his paper at any price. Then Tweed's omission informed him that he could accept or do worse. This conversation occurred in Mr. Jones' office in the Times building. Shortly thereafter a lawyer who was a tenant on the same building sent for Mr. Jones to come to his office, as he wished to see him on an important matter. Thinking that the business pertained to the building, Mr. Jones went to the lawyer's office, and being ushered into a private room, was confronted by Richard B. Connolly, the Controller, and Tweed's parlar in crime. Connolly made a blunt offer of $5,000,000 to him to forego the publication of the documents in his possession, but Jones refused it, and gave the news to the world that showed how the city had been robbed, and which resulted in driving the thieves into prison or exile.

Making Rain.
A representative of the Examiner was on Friday last again on the Morris ranch, twenty-three miles from Midland, Texas, to observe the workings of the Dyrenorth rain-making expedition. The preparations being made are very extensive, and it is probable that the grand final experiment will be made today. Several experiments have been without reference to testing the strength and efficiency of the apparatus, one of which would go to show that there is something of truth in the theory, since it was followed by a good shower of rain, a great rarity, indeed, in that country.
Every gentlemen of the expedition, from General Dyrenforth to the least in rank, is laboring at making the hundreds of large kites, filling the tubes in connection with the oxygen generator and attending to the many details of their labor.
General Dyrenforth says: "This is an experiment pure and simple, and one never before tried under such favorable conditions. There is no data or even the most important evidence to guide us in forming an opinion as to what will be the result. I certainly hope for success. The more I study the matter and the nearer I get to the culmination of our preparations for the experiments the more I am impressed with a feeling that there may be a good foundation to the theory that concussion will produce rain. As to whether the most highly favorable conditions of this most arid region, where this sort of thing is most needed, will delay, or even prevent, a favorable and convincing conclusion of our labors remain to be seen."
Bold Attempt at Robbery.
At Memphis, Tenn., on Thursday last, R. D. Frazer, president of the Security and Memphis City Bank and one of the most prominent and wealthy citizens of the city, was chloroformed and robbed at a hotel by a man asserting that he is John A. Morris of New Orleans. Morris engaged rooms at the hotel and sent for Frazer, who went to the hotel and after talking regarding a matter on which Morris asked information, the latter asked the other to take a drink. Frazer declined and turning to face Morris the latter pulled two revolvers, saying: "I am a desperate man. I have no money and my family in New Orleans is destitute. I must have cash. You indorse a check for $5,000." Frazer argued the matter. The parties finally compromised by Frazer indorsing a check of $500, hoping that the cashier at the bank would suspect something wrong and refuse to cash it, as he indorsed it: "R. D. Frazer," and he usually indorses checks: "R. Dudley Frazer." Morris then chloroformed Frazer and sent a bell boy to the bank for the money. In the evening ores of "Murder! thieves!" were heard issuing from the room. The door was burst open and Frazer was found unconscious, his watch, $50 and Morris being gone. The check was on the table, payment at the bank having been refused. Morris' whereabouts are unknown.

The five-dollar bounty on coyote scalps offered by California has evidently excited the curiosity of many in the neighborhood Territories. A story comes from Magdalene, N.M., that an ex-Justice of the Peace of that place recently left for San Diego county, in this State, taking with him a number of coyote scalps which had been intrusted to him for collecting the Territorial bounty of a half-dollar a scalp. The San Diego authorities have been warned to look out for these imported scalpa, but there is no way of guarding against this fraud should the ex-Justice have them presented under the name of a friend.
The farmers along the Sacramento river, between the Bryte ranch, near Washington, Yolo county, and the Fox break, six miles further down the river, are booming a new reclamation district by which 5,000 acres of the best land in the State will be protected from the winter floods of the Sacramento. They propose to build a levy thirty feet high, sixteen feet wide at the top and eight miles in length along the west bank of the river at a cost of $50,000.
The gun that wasn't loaded went off again Thursday morning, this time in the hands of a dealer in firearms at Pasadena, and it nearly lost him a customer, the bullet passing through the latter's clothing and passing across his chest, inflicting a flesh wound about inches long.
