TWILIGHT PATENT
WHAT THE PAPERS SAY ABOUT THE MONEY-GRABBING PATENTEES.
THEY HAD BETTER INVESTIGATE.
San Bernardino Kaleidoscope.
The Anaheim Gazette denounces the proposition of the southern counties paying $10,000 for the fumigating patent. The San Francisco Chronicle says that the method was invented by Professor Coquillet, an employee of the Department of Agriculture, who was sent to California for the express purpose of making experiments in combating the scale, and that the men who obtained the patent had nothing to do with the invention. Professor Riley of the Department of Agriculture has published a paper in which he strongly denounces the patentees. The Supervisors of this county have voted $2,000 toward purchasing the patent, and had better investigate before paying the money.
THE ENTIRE AFFAIR WAS RIDICULOUS.
Riveralde Press.
Among the resolutions adopted by the association of horticultural commissioners at Los Angeles yesterday was one to the effect that if any one of the counties fails to pay its portion of the sum necessary to purchase the gas fumigating patent that the Supervisors of the remaining counties may make up the deliciency. In view of the offer of the patentees that any county should have the right which paid its proportion, such a proposition is ridiculous. Counties that have not already made an appropriation, are not likely to do so if the other counties will do it for them.
THE PATENT IS FRAUDULENT.
San Francisco Chronicle.
The patentess of the gas treatment of the scales are pushing their scheme for obtaining $10,000 from the six southern counties in payment for something that the experts employed by the general Government originated and first gave to the public. Professor Riley, the national entomologist, who is thoroughly familiar with the facts, appears to give good advice when he recommends a combination of fruit-growers to oppose the patent, which, he says, was granted through laxity in the Patent Office.
THEY STOLE A MARCH—THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO THE PATENT.
California Fruit Grower.
Messrs. Wall, Bishop and Jones, who stole a march on the orange growers of California by having the hydrocyanic acid gas treatment for scales insects patented after government experts had perfected the process, have won for themselves a most unavailable reputation. THEY STOLE A MARCH—THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO THE PATENT.
California Fruit Grower.
Messrs. Wall, Bishop and Jones, who stole a march on the orange growers of California by having the hydrocyanic acid gas treatment for scale insects patented after government experts had perfected the process, have won for themselves a most unenviable reputation. Now that the patent is secured they do not even claim priority of ideas, but the basis of defense is that "they have the patent and that it will be cheaper for the orange growers to pay the price asked, $10,000, than to fight them in the court." San Diego, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties have signified their willingness to pay their pro-rata share of $10,000, but the other counties interested show no indication of compromising. The California Fruit Grower has contended all along that the patentees hypothecated the discovery upon which the patents are based and have no right to any emoluments, and if the growers would combine and test the case, the patent would not stand. Our position is backed up by a communication to the Scientific American by Prof. C. V. Riley, United States Entomologist at Washington, in which all the facts are set forth and the growers advised to test the case and not to pay royalties or purchase the privilege of the patent from the claimants.
THE APPROPRIATION WOULD BE AN ILLEGAL ACT—THE PATENT IS BESIDES A FRAUD.
Orange Post.
The argument brought to bear upon the Supervisors to induce them to reconsider their action upon the gas-patent question, seem to us fly wide of the mark. If we understand the matter, it is not with them a question of expedition, but simply of their authority to act. So long as they are convinced that such an appropriation of funds would be illegal, there is no use in arguing about the benefits which arise from it, or urging what other counties have seen fit to do.
INFLUENCED BY THE FAT IN THE SKILLET.
Pemona Times.
The Supervisors of Orange county have refused to purchase the right to use the hydrocyanic gas treatment of fruit trees. The Santa Ana Blade thinks they have made a mistake, as the process is patented, and even if wrongly done, the time and expense of getting it legally declared invalid will overbalance the price demanded by the patentees.
Editorial Biographies.
The three newspaper founders, Greeley, Raymond and Bennett, were each subject of biography. The first was done by James Parton and the last by Issao C. Pray, who was one of Bennett's staff. The book did not sell, but the life of Greeley was in extraordinary demand. This shows the position each held before the world. Greeley was the man for the people, while Bennett was the man for the Herald. He did not like his biography, and eventually discharged its author, who had for some years been on his staff. The three great editors mentioned above are buried in Greenwood, but Bennett is the only one of the number that has what may be called a splendid monument. His name, however, has but little distinction in that place of mortuary repose, and may be seen from the following statement. One of my friends visited Greenwood and naturally desired to see the most showy monuments.

How It Was Decided.
Marshall P. Wilder, the little comic dwarf who amuses the British aristocrats at dinners by his funny stories, astonished and amused a dinner party in London recently by telling this story: "When Timothy Healy was a boy his father was in doubt whether to make him a lawyer, a parson or a marshant. So he placed on a table a Bible, a sixpence and an apple and called the boy in, determining to name the profession according to his son's choice. Young Tim came in and saw the articles on the table. Without hesitation he put the sixpence between the leaves of the Bible, tucked the Bible under his arm and began to eat the apple. 'That settles it,' exclaimed Healy the elder. 'If he is such a hog as that I will make a politician out of him.'"
Here is one of Louis Munson's gems, that we ran across the other day in our scrapbook:
There is prevailing in this Pass at this time a spell of weather that must tempt angels to leave the asphodel-starred shores of their high abode. The sunshine is warm and comforting as a mother's love, the shade as refreshing as a summer shower. The nights are resplendent with moonshine. Through the day there sweeps by the breath of the desert, smooth and furred like a seal's skin. At night faint stirrings of the medicinal ether that serves us for an atmosphere auggest the whirr of spirit wings and the voices of angel visitants. The hills approach in their distinctness, and like devotees in the confessional lay bare their every fault. The dark line of the hill crests against the lucid sky is as distinct as penciling on ivory. From matin bell to matin ball every hour is a sweet legacy and sleep is a robber who despolis us of so many hours of glory.
