The Weekly Gazette. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. Honry Kuchel, Charles Kuchel, Editors and Proprietors. THURSDAY... JULY 23, 1891 The Board of Directors of the water company is in rather a bad way. The company's works are bad enough, goodness knows, but the Board of Directors go them one better. The President of the company, Mr. Botsford, has not attended a meeting of the board for several months, and now that Mr. Porter, the Vice President, has resigned to go upon the irrigation board, and Mr. McFadden protests against occupying the chair, even though temporarily, the board, it will be seen, is in rather a hard row of stumps. The gross aburdity of Mr. Browning retaining his office in the present state of his health is recognized by everybody. His successor should have been appointed immediately upon his inability to act. Mr. Kroeger, though personally a very fine man, is handicapped with such extreme hard-hair that it is impossible for him to take part in the discussions of the board. Of the other Directors we may say that Mr. Schorn is the right man in the right place. He is a man of judgment, hearts what is going on and speaks out in meeting. In times of scarcity of water everybody grumbles at the Directors, of course. The presents board is receiving more than the usual quantity of this sort of criticism, but perhaps they are deserving of it. There should be a complete "patch-up" all around. The various vacancies should be filled with good men, and those Directors who cannot act with the board or attend its meetings should send in their resignations. That is the only way to do business. According to the by-laws of the company a Director absenting himself from a meeting of the board is fined in the sum of $250. President Botsford having been absent eleven times out of the thirteen meetings held during his term of office, he is indebted to the company in the comfortable sum of $2750. Director Browning having also been absent eleven times, he owes the company a like amount. Thus the company has $55 standing out. As this amount will help along nicely in the flume and reservoir work planted for it is 2,500. The probable yield per acre is twelve tons. The estimated quantity of beets to be used is 30,000 tons, and the quantity of sugar capable of being produced every twenty-four hours is 84,000 pounds. The quantity of sugar produced last season was 4,255,000 pounds. The estimated quantity of sugar to be produced this year is 8,000,000 pounds. The Alvarado Sugar Company has 1,000 acres planted, and expects to produce 3,000,000 pounds of sugar. The Chino company has 2,500 acres planted, and expects a yield of 5,000,000 pounds. This is a total of 16,000,000 pounds for the State of California alone, and leads all the other States in the production of sugar from beets. The water company has instructed its attorney to begin suit against J. S. Gardiner, ex-Secretary of the company, and his bondsmen to recover $1,000 with interest at 9 per cent since August 6, 1889. This is the result of the investigation into the Bockman note. In bringing suit against Dr. Gardiner for this amount, the company virtually declares that he appropriated the money to his own use. His accounts were found to be some $300 short at the time of his resignation some months ago, and this additional amount is charged against him above and beyond that sum. While, as we said at the time of the first deficit, we do not believe that Dr. Gardiner took a cent of this money with the idea of defrauding the company, still the company can do no less than hold him responsible for it, and the action of law against him is the result of that policy. We hope the Doctor may get out of his trouble as easily as possible. The School Trustees have engaged Prof. Little of Pomona to be Principal of our schools during the coming year. It is pleasant to know in this connection that Prof. Grogan has several very flattering offers for his services. It is a pity that he could not have been re-elected by our Trustees. We hope the incoming Principal will have no cause ever to regret coming to Anaheim, and that he may fill his position as well as his predecessor has done. On the first page will be found an interesting article in reference to our irrigation district taken from a Denver newspaper. Against them, or to give any aid mauded. If half the stories going the rounds about the Directors be true, they are a very bad set of persons indeed. They are accused of everything in the calendar, even to taking water from the ditches without authority—taking it at any time, to the detriment of stockholders whose crops are drying up for the want of water, and even irrigating lands outside the limits of the company's domain. These stories are denied, of course, but that they should be started at all shows the discontent everywhere prevailing. There certainly is some foundation for these rumors. That this is so in no small part will be seen by the published call for a stockholder's meeting to be held in the office of the company next Saturday afternoon at 2 to discuss these matters, and to arrive at some satisfactory conclusion about them. Our esteemed trans-Santa Ana river contemporary, the Blade, accuses us of discussing the demisexuality of the outrageous twilight patent beyond the limits of a common-sense respectability. removes no ordinary man. He was one of that hardly band of argonauts who did so much to build up this State. He was a pioneer of Anaheim, being one of the original settlers. He came in 1861, and remained here uninterruptedly until some ten years ago, when he removed with his family to Los Angeles, where he resided up to the time of his death. In the latter city he filled various offices of public trust, being elected City Assessor several of times. He dies full of years and honors. A kind and indulgent father and brave, staunch friend passes into eternity. He suffered more than the common run of hardship. He attained man's allotted span of three score years and ten, yet was never idle a day of his life. He fought the battle of life valiantly up to the time of his final taking off. Once he suffered the entire destruction of his property by fire, and again had his household entirely swept away by a flood. Many trusts were repossed in him, and he rendered a good account of his stewardship. To the sorrowing family we tender our sincere condolences. Before venturing county money in purchasing the patent of Wall, Bishop and Jones, the Board of Supervisors asked the opinion of the District Attorney as to the legality of making such an investment. That official replied to the effect that the board could not legally use the people's money for such a purpose. It is very desirable that every possible assistance be given the fruit growers in getting rid of the scale. But it would evidently be in the nature of class legislation to make the purchase, as it would be for the special benefit only of those owning fruit trees. We Are Getting Along Quite Well. Los Angeles Express. Anaheim gives a good report of productivity this season. With hundreds of carloads of potatoes, corn, walnuts, fruit, wool, hay, grain, etc., going out of the district, its prosperous farmers and fruit growers may point with pride to what they have accomplished. The old colony maintains the reputation that it acquired in the early days of Southern California's development. It has served to illustrate the varied productiveness of this region, as well as to exhibit the practical success of co-operative effort in the establishment of colonization enterprises. The canal is 120 feet wide, with a current of two miles per hour, carrying 600 cubic feet of water per second. The crevice was soon 200 feet wide. The torrent between the cross canal and ditch drain, of which carried considerable water, defining the rest of the flood between their banks. Two hundred acres of land are unwater, including 300 acres of choice vineyard. Unless the water is soon drawn off vines will be a total loss. The residents of the neighborhood, with teams, are at work, trying to drain the overflow into the river. The damage may reach $30,000. One hundred and twenty thousand dollars were passed over the counter of the banks of caviary, in payment of fruit shipped to eastern points, as against $90,000 at the one time last year. One hundred and sixty-cars of green fruit and four cars of dried fruit have been shipped East this year, ninety-three times the same time last year. Seventy million dollars gold and a million dollars worth of gold dust, ornaments and precious stones, is a find which a contractor Rio Janeiro is reported to have made engaged in tearing down an old castle San Antonio, Brazil, which was formerly under control of the Jesuits. This period the treasure is supposed have been hidden. The contract for the motion of the castle stipulated that in the event of the discovery of any precious metahalf of the treasure should belong to the state. Church Announcements.
