The Weekly Gazette. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. Henry Kuchel, Charles Kuchel, EDITORS AND PROPRIETORS. THURSDAY. APRIL 16, 1891. PRESIDENT HARRISON will visit the Pacific Coast next week. His itinerary is so arranged that his train passes through Anaheim at 2 o'clock in the morning—an unseemly and highly unfashionable hour for people to be out. He will probably pass through town at the hour stated on next Thursday morning, on his trip to Coronado. He returns on Friday afternoon, but whether his train goes to Riverside via Orange, or comes back this way, is not stated. If the former, our people will probably not have the pleasure of seeing him. Long live the President, and the United States, and the people of Anaheim—who are always abed at 2 o'clock in the morning. The office of the irrigation district has not yet been moved over to Fullerton, and the chances are that it will remain in close proximity to its present location. The only thing to recommend the selection of the Fullerton office is on the score of its economy. But now that our good friends accuse the sandwash have shown us a trick or two in the game of economy, we purpose showing them what we can do in return. Unquestionably the great majority of the people of the district favor this city for the location of the office, and if it is to be made a question of economy, this city will hold its own against any in the district—bar none. We need that office, and are going to keep it here. ITALY is now in debt to the enormous amount of £900,000,000. The national debt is estimated at £480,000,000 and the debts of the cities and provincial governments at £400,000,000, which make a total on governmental account of £520,000,000. In 1861 the total did not exceed $120,000,000. In the same time the mortgages on private lands have run up to £320,000,000 from £260,000,000. This has taken place although the value of Italian lands is decreasing and the common people are leaving the country by hundreds of thousands annually. The expenditures of the Government for many years have been in excess of its receipts and elegant premises of the Sutter Club, new California State Bank building. On Thursday, the closing evening, there will be a grand reception, under the auspices of the wives of the members of the local Medical Society, at the Crocker Art Gallery. The Gallery will be lighted throughout by electricity, affording the visitors an opportunity of inspecting the finest collections of pictures on the Pacific Coast. Additional entertainments, for the special benefit of visiting ladies, have been arranged for each afternoon. The present outlook points to a very profitable and enjoyable meeting. JUDGING by the report printed in both the German papers of Los Angeles, the turners who visited us a week ago Sunday had a rollicking good time. The humorous account in the *Sul Californier* averts a plentiful decoration of our buildings and flag display and triumphal arches erected in honor of the turners' coming. Mr. Ruhman's lunch and Herr Conrad's mammoth brewery come in for a share of attention, and thanks are returned to our citizens for their kind reception. We are always glad to entertain such jolly good fellows as the Turn Verein Germania. We invite them again, and give them *Gut Heil*. ATTORNEY-GENERAL HART has commenced action in the Superior Court of San Diego county to set aside and dissolve the Elsinore Irrigation District; on the ground that said district was illegally formed. According to the complaint a portion of the district is in the county of San Bernardino, and a portion in San Diego county, and the Board of Supervisors on October 19, 1889, heard a petition and took such proceedings as purported to establish and define the boundaries of said district, but the pretended order was not entered on the minutes of the board up to February 1, 1891. No less than twenty-two thousand people were crowded into the southern end of the old exhibition building, in which the exhibit was displayed. The attendance surpassed the expectations of the managers of the affair, and was certainly a surprise to the many people who were turned away from the doors unable to gain admittance. The fair undoubtedly scored a tremendous hit, and the attendance for the remainder of the stay will undoubtedly be very large. Five hundred thousand oranges deftly grouped, arranged and constructed into enormous designs and structures, never before seen in that city, beamed on the throng which good-naturedly jostled, shoulder to shoulder, through the evening, which was if anything too warm for the season, and incidentally called attention to the glorious climate of California. The Chicago members of the Western Association of California Pioneers, sixty in number, attended the exhibition in a body, accompanied by the Second Regiment band, which, during the evening, rendered a solid programme to the edification of the great throng assembled. The old pioners brought with them many young folks, to Ex-Governor WATERMAN died at his residence in San Diego on Sunday evening at 7:15 o'clock. Hills Not Approved The following is a complete list of the bills which Governor Markham has refused to sign: For improvements at the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Aylum; claim of D. Jordan for $79,000; for additional buildings at the Mendocino Insane Aylum, $184,900; for the completion and maintenance of the Preston School of Industry; to provide for the payment of private property taken for public use; appropriating $50,000 for a wagon road from Mariposa to Yosemite; for the relief of Emma Kelly, $7,500; providing for the receipt of money from the United States on account of the Direct Tax bill; for a Superintendent's residence, laundry machinery, new flooring, etc., at the Stockton Inns Aylum; for the purchase of jute machinery for Folsom Prison, and fixing the prizes at which jute goods shall be sold; to pay the claim of Mary M. Springer; providing for inspectors of plumbing and drainage in cities; providing for a State Sanitary Inspector; to create a State Board of Funeral Inspectors; to pay the claim of John Mullan for his commissions on money collected by him from the United States on account of Indian war claims; to pay the claim of E. N. Street; relating to the organization of irrigation districts; repealing Section 337 of the Penal Code, making it a felony for any board or authority to license gaming; amending the Code of Civil Procedure relating to appealed cases; concerning conclusive presumptions. (Amends Section 1, 1968 of the Code of Civil Procedure); to pay claim of J. H. Lafferty; concerning conveyance of property for founding universities and galleries of art. The rasquas which the Governor gives for the disallowance of the above claims, are as follows: The claim of Mrs. Kelly for damages resulting from injuries received from her husband while in the employ of the State, are not allowed as a matter of principle, the Governor being of the opinion that the State was not in any way to blame for the accidents happening, and that it opens the door for a very great depletion of the State Treasury. The claim of Mrs. Springer was not allowed, for the reason that there is now on file in the Attorney General's office a receipt in full for claims, of any kind whatsoever, as against the State, which the Governor does not feel at liberty to disregard. The claim of Dennis Jordan for $79,000, together with that of Captain Mullan and others, are claims which should be adjudicated before a court of competent jurisdiction, which would relieve the Legislature and Governor from the responsibility of passing upon claims with which they are not familiar, and concerning which they cannot, in so short a space of time, obtain the information to act intelligently and wisely, and especially upon ex-parte evidence. They have quarreled among themselves and probably feel that nothing but a little scalping and torturing of white people will satisfy them. Is it any wonder that the people of Arizona and New Mexico do not want to see Geronimo and his band brought back? The Medical Society of the State of California will this year hold its annual meeting at Sacramento. The society will on that occasion attain its majority, having been organized 21 years ago. The sessions will be held in the Senate Chamber, State Capitol, the use of which has been kindly granted by Secretary of State Waite. Reduced transportation and hotel rates have been secured. The number of physicians who have already signified their intention of attending, and of contributing papers, is such as to render the meeting of unusual scientific interest. The social features of the occasion have not been neglected, and the local medical men have determined to gain an enviable reputation for the capital city. On the first evening, Dr. W. R. Clinesa of Sacramento, the President of the Society, will give a reception at his residence. Wednesday evening the visitors will be entertained by the Sacramento Society for Medical Improvement, at the The Lord Save Us! Los Angeles Times. The everlasting Italian question pops up again. A dispatch from Rome announces that a member of the Chamber of Deputies yesterday gave notice of his intention to ask the Italian government what satisfaction had been asked for or obtained in the case of the Italiana lynched at New Orleans. At first Uncle Sam, who is essentially a man of peace, was anxious to avoid war with Italy. Then, as the Italian jibes kept on, he began to think he would about as soon fight as not; and now, by the great horn spoon, he has arrived at the stage where he would much rather fight—where he absolutely demands Eye-talain gore to stay the yearnings of his interior department. The Great Spring Medicine—The Blood is the Life. GENTLEMEN: I have been troubled with hail bloodtor some years, but recently purchased two bottles of Hibbard's Rheumatic Syrup, which has entirely cured me. As a blood purifier it has no equal, and I also take pleasure in recommending it as a tonic, alterative, and reliable rheumatic remedy. Very truly yours, S. E. Ferguson, Eaton Ramide, Mich. This is to certify that we know Mr. Ferguson, and believe the statement made by him to be true. We unhesitatingly recommend this medicine as we believe it to be the greatest family medicine on our shelves. WALWORTH & SOULLE, Eaton Rapids, Mich. Sold by D. W. Hunt. Cold and moisture combined have a torporising effect upon the bodily organs, and the digestive and secretive processes are apt to be more tardily performed in winter than in fall. The same is true, also, of the excretory functions. The bowels are often sluggish, and the pores of the skin throw off but little waste matter at this season. The system, therefore, requires opening up a little, and also purifying and regulating, and the safest and most thorough tone and alternative that can be used for these purposes is Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. Persons who wish to escape the rheumatic twings, the dyspneptic agonies, so commend at this time of the year, will do well to reinforce their systems with this renowned vegetable stomach and invigorant. It improves the appetite, strengthens the stomach, cheers the spirits, and renovates the whole physique. Marble Goods.
