The Bear Valley Irrigation Company has started an extensive project for bringing water to the San Jacinto valley from Whitewater river. They have a pipe line from the Bear Valley reservoir, but it will not furnish sufficient water for the immense tract to be irrigated. This line can be paralleled; however, at any time, but they propose first to bring water from Whitewater river, utilizing water that is now going to waste, and reserving the water in the Bear Valley lake. A pipe line will be laid from the river, which flows southeast from the San Bernardino mountains around the mouth of the canyon at the Pass by Banning and Beaumont and through San Timoteo hills, a distance of about twenty-five miles, to the San Jacinto valley. The pipe will be about thirty inches in diameter. The work will be completed in a year. Edward M. Buggs, the civil and hydraulic engineer, who has been engaged during the past eight months on the Bear Valley pipeline will have charge of the MISCELLANEOUS. WHICH WILL IT BE? Some excitement has been caused in the foreign fruit trade in New York by reports from Italy to the effect that the orange and lemon crops have been destroyed by recent storms. President Contencin of the Italian Chamber of Commerce, who is at present at Sorrento, Italy, has written a letter in which he says the damage to orange and lemon crops has been enormous, and was caused by a gale of wind which swept all leaves off the trees, leaving the oranges and lemons without protection. The crop, he estimates, will be reduced about 75 per cent. There are from 60,000 to 70,000 boxes of winter cut fruits stored there, leaving about an equal amount on the trees for shipment. Had it not been for the gale Sorrento would have shipped during the spring fully 800,000 boxes of oranges. The lemon crop suffered chiefly from hall, which chilled the fruit. Sorrento will not export this summer much over 20,000 to 30,000 boxes of lemons instead, as formerly, of about 100,000 boxes. The Riverside orange market is very active. The daily shipments amount to about twenty cars. Prices are a little higher, $1 30 to $1 35 and $1 40 now being offered for seedlings. The city is filled with buyers and one-half of the fruit has not passed out of the hands of the growers. Buy and recommend Farmers' Healing Liniment because it is a genuine healing remedy.
