THE LAST SAD RITES. REMAINS OF THE LATE KING KALAKAUA CONVEYED TO HONOLULU. The last honors were paid to the Late King Kalakaua with the funeral obsequies which took place in San Francisco on Friday afternoon. During half of Thursday and throughout the night the body of the dead King lay in state in the mortuary chapel of Trinity Episcopal Church, where the King had several times attended services, since his arrival on December 4th. A guard of soldiers kept watch over the coffin throughout the night. From early morning the streets in the vicinity of the church were thronged with people. At 1:30 r.m. the bells of the church began tolling, and while the organ sounded the solemn strains of Beethoven's funeral march, the clergy followed by the guard of honor proceeded slowly down the center aisle, reading the burial psalm. Just behind them followed colored porters who carefully bore the coffin, draped in the Hawaiian colors and heaped with flowers, to the bier. As the coffin was borne into the chancel, the clergy, comprising all the ministers of the Episcopal faith in the city, arranged themselves on either side. The twentieth verse of the fifteenth chapter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, beginning with the words: "Now is Christ risen from the dead," and ending with the words: "O death, where is thy sting; O grave, where is thy victory," was read by Bishop Spalding of St. John's Church. The hymn, "Jerusalem the Golden," was sung by the choir. Rev. J. S. Reed then delivered the funeral discourse in which he said that "death was but a process of higher development." He closed by addressing Admiral Brown and staff, saying: "Officers of the fleet, speaking as I may in the name of the city, we led you take the remains of this dear man back to his native islands, carrying with you the assurances of our sincere sympathy." The choir sang "Rock of Ages." The casket was repeated by the clergy and those present and after the benediction the funeral cortex slowly conveye I the coffin to the hearse and the long line of march began. When the procession arrived at the Washington-street pier a dense crowd of people had gathered and the police had difficulty in clearing a space for the cortege to pass. The casket containing the King's remains was placed aboard the Madrona and received by Admiral Brown. The Madrona then steamed out to the Charleston, and the casket was transferred to the flagship and placed in the after barbette under a canopy formed of American and Hawaiian flags.
