The Weekly Gazette. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. Henry Kuchel, Charles Kuchel, Editors and Producers. THURSDAY... JANUARY 29, 1891. THE NEW COUNTY OF ORANGE. The people living in the territory north of the Orange county line and extending to New river and beyond, have been agitating the question of petitioning the Legislature to be dismembered from Los Angeles and made a part of Orange county. We understand that petitions are being circulated to that effect, and being signed almost unanimously. The desire to become a part of this county is said to extend with cordial unanimity to the Old river line. Years ago, when Anaheim advocated county division, the people of the New river country were with us every time, as enthusiastic as we to be set apart from the "imperial county" and formed into a county by ourselves. When finally our robust friends at Santa Ana showed themselves possessed of the spirit and the power to divide the county, and debarred the people of the rich and prosperous New river country from coming into our political household, they were guilty of perpetrating a sin that served to alienate the support of this entire section from the project that they had favored for so many years. Now the people of this county, and our robust friends at Santa Ana are here included, are given a splendid opportunity for making full and ample repatriation. The New river people desire to be incorporated within our county. They desire to be with us, and to be dismembered from Los Angeles. A delegation of their citizens waited upon the Supervisors at Santa Ana on Monday to lay their proposition before the board, and to inquire whether their section would be welcome to a place in our county. The board informed them that they would be met with open arms by our people, and that every aid would be tendered them in their endeavor to become a part of this county. Upon this assurance petitions are being circulated throughout the section, requesting the Legislature to detach them from Los dially received, and Mr. Gird stated that it was his intention to run his road to Anaheim in the near future. We are not privileged to speak of the matter in extenso, but can assure our readers that a railroad from Anaheim to the Chino sugar beet factory is one of the certainties of the future. There are ninety men at work upon the Chino factory, and the place has the appearance of a prosperous mining town of early days. The sugar factory will be a bonanza to Southern California, and Anaheim should be connected with it by a railroad. We can raise prime beets here, we have a market at Chino, and now we want the railroad. Get together and talk railroad. THE GAZETTE ABROAD. A SUBSCRIBER IN ILLINOIS SENDS IN HIS SUBSCRIPTION. The following letter from a subscriber in Illinois brings intelligence of a very flattering nature to the publishers. We hope Mr. Corris will continue to find this journal of sufficient interest to justify a perusal of its columns, and that before many months we may claim him as a permanent resident of Anaheim. His letter reads: RUSSELL, Lake Co., Ill., Jan. 12, 1891. EDITOR GAZETTE—Please find exclosed express money order for four dollars in payment for theGAZENTE.I receive it regularly and find it a great source of enjoyment in reading the news. I spent a year in Anaheim and vicinity, am familiar with the general outlines of the country and acquainted with a great many of the people. My health is very poor here, especially in the winter months. I am troubled with the asthma and I hope to make arrangements before another year rolls around to come ty the old Pacific shore to stay. Respectful you, A. C. CORRIES. And the Other Half Playing Poker. Redondo Beach Compass. During the visit of the editors, all of whom wore badges with the letters "E. A. S. C." printed on them, one of the members was seen down town, and someone inquiring of an acquaintance the meaning of the mystic letters, was told they signified "Epworth Association of Southern California." A good Methodist brother hearing this, and being informed that a large number of visitors wearing similar badges were to be found at the big hotel, hastened thither in search of congenial society; but imagining his horror when he found one half of the "Epwortha" dazzing, and the other half playing billiards. dismembered from Los Angeles. Upon this assurance petitions are being circulated throughout the section, requesting the Legislature to detach them from Los Angeles and form them in a part of Orange county. The reason for the move on the part of the New river people is their unwillingness either to become a part of the city and county government of Los Angeles, with its resultant taxation and indifferent benefit, or to be attached to the proposed county of Pomona. In setting herself up in a city and county government of her own, Los Angeles will undoubtedly extend her limits to Old river, or possibly to New river, leaving the strip of territory to the south, that she does not want, either to "rattle" for itself or become absorbed by Pomona. Neither of these propositions is relished by the New river people, and, as long ago they stood side by side with an agitating division, their old love for us—commedable act that it is—asserts itself, and they ask to be permitted to come and live with us. Let them come, and welcome! The absorption of this magnificent stretch of country would be at once an act of supreme and lasting importance to this county. It is imperatively the duty of every man in Orange county to foster this idea of annexation. We want this section, they want to be with us, and we should see to it that our representative in the Legislative is alive to the fact, as he must necessarily be, that the bill for the annexation of this territory should claim his entire attention to the exclusion of everything else likely to come before this session of the Legislature. This New river country is one of the richest in California. If our county line were shifted so as to take in this strip we should include within our bounds the towns of Riveria, Downey, Whittier, Norwalk, Artesia and all the rich territory of the Los Nietos valley. We would thus increase our taxable wealth by several millions, while the increased governmental expenditure would be nominal—trilining in comparison. Our tax rate would be lowered, and we should be one of the leading counties in the State, in wealth, resources, population, products and advantages. While Orange county is today one of the brightest stars in this State's political firmament, she should not miss this opportunity of gathering into her borders one of the richest sections of the State, whose people are even now most anxious to come into her fold. The New river people are welcome! Come during the visit of the editors, all of whom wore badges with the letters "E. A. S. C." printed on them, one of the members was seen down town, and someone inquiring of an acquaintance the meaning of the mystic letters, was told they signified "Epworth Association of Southern California." A good Methodist brother hearing this, and being informed that a large number of visitors wearing similar badges were to be found at the big hotel, hastened thither in search of congenial society; but imagine his horror when he found one half of the "Epwortha" dancing, and the other half playing billiards. The New river people are welcome! Come and be a part of Orange county! Robert Effy of Santa Cruz, a capitalist who has invested considerable money in irrigation district bonds in this State, was in town several days last week for the purpose of inquiring into the status of the bonds of our district. We are informed that in conversation with Director Crowther, Mr. Effy was given such a disparaging view of our bond question that he abandoned the subject in disgust and left for his home without further investigation. Mr. Effy came here with the intention of investing in $300,000 of our water bonds, or double that amount if possible, and the idea that our bonds should not have been placed in their most favorable light, is a circumstance of a particularly grewsome nature to our people. We give these matters as they come to us. An explanation is needed from Mr. Crowther. If he is opposed to the district, as would appear from his action, the people should know of it, and at once. Since the above was placed in type we have been informed that Mr. Effy called upon Director Ryan and others and had the bond question more satisfactorily explained. It is probable we shall hear from him shortly in relation to our bonds. Meanwhile, it would beswell for Mr. Crowther to explain away the damaging position in which he has been placed.
