Grams of Gold.
He is poorest who has least love in his heart.
What maintains one vice would bring up two children.
Vanity is the passion of a little mind and a cold heart.
The present, according to Richter, is your eternity, and never abandon you.
Humility is most serviceable as an undergarment, and should never be worn as an overcoat.
True happiness (says Scott) is not the gentle growth of earth; the toll is fruitless if you seek it here.
He who tries to solve the problem of his own existence will find that it takes just a little longer than a lifetime.
OUR NEIGHBOR STARS.
These Are Solutions Who Think They Are Inhabited.
"You remember," says a writer on astronomy in an Eastern newspaper, "may allusion some time ago to the fact that Mars remembled the earth in many of its observed features. It has for years been the dream of astronomy to pune that life exists in some or all of the millions of stars which surround us. The postic astronomer runs in this way: All things were created for the use and support of living beings. What can do the myriads of heavenly bodies have if there is no life? Would not the earth be altogether devoid of interest if life did not exist? If there was neither life nor thought what would be the significance of the universe? Reflections of this sort enkindle the lively imagination, and speculation as to what the sciences of astronomy will eventually reveal runs to extravagant extremes.
"Mathematical astronomy, like Newton and La Place, arises by their marvous calculations a high state of enthythmism. But is this the only line along which we can work? The prediction of eclipses, the division of time, the mapping out of the courses of certain heavenly bodies with perfect accuracy, the discovery of comets, planets and moons—are those to be the final triumphs of the science which has revolutionized human thought at two or three stages of man's history? Let me answer in the words of an enthymist: That is not the aim. Behold those millions of men, similar to that which gives light to the earth, and, like it, sources of movement, activity and splendor; well, those are the subjects of the science of the future—the study of universal and eternal life. You are going to witness the dawn of a new day. Mathematical astronomy will give place to physical astronomy, to the true study of nature."
"He goes on to say that by the study of nature he means the study of the conditions of life in the various parts of the universe, the physical condition of the planets, their geographical aspects, their climatology and tions of the Stars a large portion."

The double reward of kind words in the happiness they cause in others and the happiness they cause in ourselves.
The golden seed in plenty now,
Scatter the truth where's you go;
The angels will the harvest reap,
And God the garnered fruit will keep.
Without hard work and earnest purpose all that is best in the world perishea. We cannot even have a proper game without earnestness.
A weak mind sinks under prosperity, as well as under adversity. A strong and deep one has two highest tides—when the moon is at the full and when there is no moon.
God has given us wit, and flavor, and brightness, and laughter, and perfume, to enliven the days of man's pilgrimage and to charm his pained steps over the burning marl.
It is no man's business whether he has genius or not; work he must, whatever he is, but quietly and steadily; and the natural and enforced results of such work (says Rukin) will always be the things that God meant him to do, and will be his best.
Happy is the man who can recognize in the work of to-day a connected portion of the work of life and an embodiment of the work of eternity. The foundations of his confidence are unchangeable, for he has been made a partaker of infinity.
The world is not a race course or a battlefield or a prize fight. It is a place in which each man is given his own sphere to occupy and his own duty to do; and if that sphere be occupied honorably and that duty be done well, every man is undoubtedly a victim and a "fit survivor."
THE WORLD.
"I saw eternity the other night."
Like a great Ring of pure and endless light,
All calm as it was bright;
And round beneath it. Time in hours, days, years,
Driv'n by the spheres.
Like a jest shadow move'd, in which the world
And all bar trains were hurt'd."
Vaughan, 1825.
Although the desire to help and benefit men is a primary condition for doing it, the knowing how to accomplish it harmonely and permanently is a large part of the work; and that must come, if at all, through intelligent reasoning. Strong feeling is nearly always one-sided, and some of the truth is thus overlooked.
A SAFE INVESTMENT.
Gold and silver, like the mans,
Will keep shipping through our han is:
Jewels, glancing like the spark,
Will be hidden in the dark;
Sun, moon and stars may pale,
But these months shall never fall:
"Begun upon the wrist must
Shall be prepared in at last."
He who would enjoy life and act with freedom must have the work of the day continually before his eyes. Not yesterday's work, lost he fall in despair, nor to-morrow's, lost he become a visionary; not that thought at two or three stages of man's history?
Let me answer in the words of an enthusiast: That is not the aim. Behold those millions of man, similar to that which gives light to the earth, and like it, sources of movement, activity and splendor; well, those are the subjects of the science of the future—the study of universal and sternal life. You are going to witness the dawn of a new day. Mathematical astronomy will give place to physical astronomy, to the true study of nature.
"He goes on to say that by the study of nature he means the study of the conditions of life in the various parts of the universe, the physical condition of the planets, their geographical aspects, their climatology and their meteorology. It will probably be proved that Mars and Venus are peopled by thinking beings; that Jupiter has not yet reached a condition where life can be supported; that the beings that inhabit it are of an entirely different organization from our earth dwellers. Still further, astronomy will show that the earth is but one place in the celestial country, and that man is a citizen of the heavens. It will thus lead up to a new philosophy, the religion of superior minds."
"Such is the dream and such the final object of the telescope search. The best that can be said for if from a scientific standpoint is that the facts observed neither prove it nor disprove it. There is only one body where the conditions are believed to be such as to support intelligent beings of our kind. But that is inconclusive. We can observe with our telescope but three or four out of the millions of heavenly bodies. Moreover, there can be definite adaptation. Should our temperature be greatly raised or lowered, fire as it exists now would disappear from the face of the earth; half perhaps there are forms of life which would thrive under the conditions which are final to us."
"Again, millions of years passed by before life got a foothold on our globe, according to the best evidence that we have, and for millions of years after life is extinct here it is expected that our planet will roll on through space. The period of intelligent man is but a moment out of an immensurable lapse of time. It is not probable that, if it were possible to visit each one of the 50,000,000 stars visible through our telescopes, we should find more than one or two of the best where our stage just been reached."
"Wherever the stars are inhabited or not, we know something about the appearance of the universe as presented at some point."
"The binocular system of Gamma, in the constellation Andromeda, instead of one sun, shining with a white light, any possible observer would behold three stars—a yellow sun, a blue sun and a green sun. As one of the same would be nothing another would be rising, and the color of objects would be constantly changing. When the blue sun should be in the middle all the landscape—the rocks and the water—would reflect the blue rays, thriving, perhaps slight changes of golden or green due to one of the other stars as it was setting or rising."
"This is but a suggestion set forth of the magnificent sight which makes its presentation near multiple triple and double stars, and we know of this through telescope observation."
"The double stars especially look to show brilliant complementary colors, taking the hue that will contrast most charmingly with that of the next star—a none colored one beside an amberald, a sapphire blue with a pale yellow primrose for a neighbor, white and ruby, gold and purple, one green and orange, each increasing bythe beauty of the others."
"There is a nebula on the Southern Ocean."

He who would enjoy life and act with freedom must have the work of the day continually before his eyes. Not yesterday's work, lost he fall in despair, nor to-morrow's, lost he become a visionary; not that which ends with the day, which is worldly work, nor yet that only which remains to eternity, for by it he cannot shape his actions.
Without standiness of character in social life there can be no true fellowship. Accomplishments may please, beauty may charm, finery and grace may attract; but to win confidence and respect, to be trusted and relied upon, the man or woman must be stable in character, self-pointed, true to promise, punctual—uniting firmness to geniality and steadfastness to good nature.
Shannon Out of Gear,
By material distress, the human machinery cannot half perform its effect. Negation, observation, examination are disfigured, the blood becomes vampy, the nervous faint, the consciousness ghostly, sleep disturbed and apprehension tremulous. Trouble is this in the company. There is, however, a human antidote to the mischiefs and a complete solution at home. In municipal regions of our North and West, in South America, Commonwealth and on the Bahamas of Primrose, we will be unanimous countryside where the smog exists, this pollutant prevails and mutates. Hundreds of miles along this pollutant highway during the hot summer days, been constantly widening the area of his mistreatment, and depressing contemplation, kidney trouble, rheumatic and disability are all remanded by it.
Henry Hancock Tramway.
The following real estate transfer have been recorded during the week:
H. Warder in Thomas J. James—80 acres, being E2 of SW2 now 20, T4, R10, agreement to convey; $49,500.
Same to Alfred K. Nutt—SW2 of SE2 now 20, in agreement; $29,200.
M. Sammerfield, M. Krannar, and J. W. Van Horn by R. T. Harris, Sherrill to John P. Zeyes—Ten acres, being Vinayand lot A4; Anaheim; HI; 320.
H. C. Kellogg to A. K. Nutt—NE2 of NE2 now M4, T4, R10; $49,500.
Rancho D. Cortez in Mary Jane Costin—11.92 acres in lot 50; Anaheim extension; love and affection.
Fulbertson Land and Trust Company in W. F. Brennan—Late 4 to 7 and 18 to 20 instances, in blight II, Palacios; $21,750.
That an irrigating canal through a ranch is an injury instead of a benefit in the same what paradoxical assertion which is new vexing the mind of Colonel Sumner's Superior Court. The present manager of the great Glenn run at San Jose appears an obstruction to the proposed combination of the main canal of the Central Irrigation District. This district organized under the Wright law; programs to make fertile fully 160,000 acres of land in Colonel Sumner's area and most of William. The river has been augmented almost opaque China; and the plan has been taken down the winter in a big main canal. But the small would have to go directly through the Glenn run; and the ranch managed through Attorney C. P. Louth of Chico have brought us to stop the work.
The district people do not program to give up this idea without a kiddy fight. They think it is a very resultant history that a water drink should injure hard, and they have called on a number of experts for advice to bank their old of the same. Among others called on in Lead Agnes Mill of the Central Pacific. His dependance has just begun taken. There is no unanimity among Mr. Miller opinion in the matter. He praises 2500 men only a few miles away, and has conundrums in his opinion. He makes a general statement that production capacity is inadequate in making and supporting one permanent building only temporary areas of land other than intended.
Price will be given and those who boor or depression obtain high prices trying poorly take.

is required to fill the same conditions. This subject was very thoroughly investigated,
when, shortly before the Southern California house, the Southern Pacific people were considering the purchase in one of the southern counties of 105,000 acres of land requiring irrigation. If the test three brought to hear to estimate the value of irrigated over unirrigated land is to be treated, the proportion of 15 to 1 is far too small. There are many tracts north where subsistence farms from $3 without water to $150 to $200 irrigated. Some Pandora residents claim that one acre of land with water can be made to pay good interest on $5,000. In this special case of the Glenn lands which may, by reason of their situation, be considered as naturally irrigated, the gain from artificial surface irrigation would not be so great as would be the case with other conditions in another locality; still the presence of flowing water would greatly enhance the value of the property and make it suited for small holdings. In the course of the deposition Mr. Mills makes an interesting comparison between populous Piedmont and Lowbardy provinces in the valley of the Po, Italy, where irrigation is reduced to almost a science, and our vast Sacramento Valley, with 300,000 more acres than the Po, yet comparatively sparsely populated. — Bulletin.
A decision in the case has not yet been rendered.
Orange Crop Prospects.
It is probable that the orange crop of Southern California will somewhat exceed that of last year, but not sufficiently to overstock the market unless badly handled: Prices ought to be obtained, which, if not equal to those of last year, should prove satisfactory to all reasonable growers.
An important factor in fixing the selling price of fruit will be the size of the Florida and Louisiana crop. The drift of information from reliable sources clearly indicates a falling off of both those States. A representative of the Florida Fruit Exchange says of the crop of that State that "From the present prospect a very large portion of the crop will be sold upon the trees; in fact, heavy sales have already been reported from various sections of the States. But we expect to handle a large portion of the unaffected."
FARM NOTES.
Rains cannot well be grown on lawns. The grass hills them.
Wood taken contains a large proportion of lime as well as of potash.
Sweet corn in a crop that pays every year, and is always in demand.
One of the most beautiful ornamental plants is the cumber-sil bean plant.
Cover your aparigins beds with manure late in the season, and use manure liberally for that purpose.
Take another look for the borer in the trunks of the peach tree. Look just below the line of the mariae of the ground.
It costs just as much to raise a golf and sell him for $100 as it does to raise a better one and sell it for two or three times that man.
Brains on the farm are more valuable than capital. Farming really combines several occupations, and there is always something to learn.
If you have but little work to do be vigilant at destroying weeds. No work is so profitable as that of keeping down the weeds and not allowing them to seed.
Potatoes contain 230 parts of nutritient matter to the 1,000 pounds. They are given raw and allowed in cut feed, but they are best boiled or steamed. It is best to give them in mixed feed.
While one class of farmers is endeavoring to produce very large hogs, another class is aiming to produce a smaller hog in a shorter period of time. One class produces lard and the other choice pork.
It may surprise some farmers to be informed that a sheep can be made to reach a live weight of over 400 pounds, yet such is the fact. As high as 425 pounds has been reached by an Oxford ram, and 300 pounds is not considered annual as an average for some choice flocks. Yet our sheep that reach the markets seldom weigh over 125 pounds.
The most experienced farmers and directors of the agricultural colleges are unanimous in the decision that shallow cultivation of corn during a dry spell is the best safeguard.
An important factor in fixing the selling price of fruit will be the size of the Florida and Louisiana crop. The drift of information from reliable sources clearly indicates a falling off of both those States. A representative of the Florida Fruit Exchange says of the crop of that State that "From the present prospect a very large portion of the crop will be sold upon the trees; in fact, heavy sales have already been reported from various sections of the State. But we expect to handle a large portion of the unnold fruit. During the season of 1888-89 the business of the Exchange increased over the previous season forty-two per cent. Last season (1899-90) the crop increased but ten per cent, and seventy per cent of it was sold at home; still our business increased in volume over the season of 1888-89 fifty-two per cent."
Regarding the prices he said: "The outlook is very favorable, and the average will range higher than for some years now. Small fruits have been almost a failure throughout the country. The great market has had to depend upon California for many summer fruits, a rich harvest for the Golden State." Oranges will be the main dependence for winter fruit. The apple crop which interferences with the sale of oranges in a comparative failure throughout the country. The Louisiana orange crop is very light.
"As a rule the fruit sold at home has brought good prices. Some who sold early did not get on much as they should have. A few weeks since our executive committee issued a circular letter to the growers advising that in view of the flattering prospects, a fair average quality of fruit should not be sold for less than $1.75 on the tree, believing that by shipping through the Exchange an even better average could be obtained. This has had marked influence in stiffening the selling price, very little good fruit, near shipping points, is being sold for less than this sum.
"The crop has already begun to move. We have been forwarding a good many lemons for the past month, which have brought very satisfactory prices, and oranges are coming in every day. At least five thousand boxes have gone forward, eight our loads have already been shipped from Bexhburg and the vicinity of Lake Wear. With the exception of the sweet Seville variety this fruit is green."
He thought the scarcity of the crop would not necessarily prevent a glut in the market. Very cold weather in the market shape the movement of fruit, and would cause a glut if it continued for any considerable time. Again, a large portion of the fruit sold in the State is for early delivery; this may occasion an overflow supply in December, resulting in a sharp decline in values as was the case last year. The average price for the season, however, will in all probability be high; prices will be good before the rush begins, and those who hold ever until the bad weather or depression. If it comes, is ever, will obtain high prices—barring the risk of carrying poorly and of frost, which must be taken.
Happy Mothers.
Wm. Timmona, Postmaster of Idaville, Ind., writes: "Electric Bitters has done more for me than all other medicines combined, for that bad feeling arising from Kidney and Liver trembles." John Lalie, farmer and stockman, of same place, says: "Find Electric Bitters to be the best. Kidney and Liver medicine, made me feel like a new man." J. W. Gardner, hardware merchant, same town, says: Electric Bitters is just the thing for a man who is all run down and don't care whether he lives or dies; he forms new strength, good appetite and felt just like he had a paw lease on life. Only 50c a bottle, at Wm. H. Higgins' Dongstore.
