Kathan Wilson of Kernsak, when accused on a charge of murder committed in Texas nearly eight years ago, was referred to last week, camped from the Town Bluff at Calton on Thursday morning last while in the sitting room of the deput awaiting the arrival of the overland train. Just before his image Willett complained of feeling cold, and being handcuffed, asked that the brassets he removed an instant for the purpose of allowing him to put on his overcoat. No sooner had they been taken off than quicker than a flash, he started to run. He jumped through an open doorway, almost the door in the lane of the Sheriff, and made off. The officer drew his revolver and attempted to fire at the fleeing man, but owing to the crowd that was present and being fearful that he might kill or wound some innocent party, he abstained from shooting. In the meantime Willett disappeared in the darkness, and that was the last of him. Telegrams were immediately sent to all points, and a Sheriff's poste are scooring San Bernardino for the fugitive. Willett's arrest created quite a sensation at Norwalk and Artesia, where he has resided for upwards of fifteen years. Willett is well known in Anaheim. About a year ago he brought into town a curious freak of nature in the shape of a young pig, littered on his ranch the previous day, the creature having a miniature elephant-like trunk projecting over the snout. The freak had died soon after the litter, and was brought into town by Willett, and exhibited as a natural curiosity. Willett has all along been known as a quiet and peaceful citizen. His arrest, after nearly eighteen years of successful alion of the officers, forms quite a dramatic episode. The manner in which Willet's identity was revealed to the officers is reported to be as follows by the Los Angeles Times: "Some twelve or thirteen years ago Willett and a Fragrant ana Pure OF TEA, seman's Best! FERTIFYING Sweet Wines. The Commissioner of Internal Revenue at Washington has prepared a series of regulations for the enforcement of the provisions of the present tariff law, relating to the fortification of sweet wines. The law provides that the winemaker who is also a distiller may remove grape brandy from his distillery direct to his winery for use in the fortification of sweet wines, and also that the maker of sweet wines may withdraw grape brandy from any special bonded warehouse for the fortification of such wines. It provides further that all fortification of sweet wines shall be done on the premises of the winemaker where the grape juice is expressed within a period from August to April, inclusive. The first section of the regulations provide for a bond to be given by the winemaker under conditions prescribed by law and applicable both to transfers from the distillery and from the special bonded warehouse. The freak had died some after the litter, and was brought into town by Willett, and exhibited as a natural curiosity. Willett has all along been known as a quiet and peaceful citizen. His arrest, after nearly eighteen years of successful alienation of the officiers, forms quite a dramatic episode. The manner in which Willet's identity was revealed to the officiers is reported to be as follows by the Los Angeles Times: "Some twelve or thirteen years ago Willet and a man named Ball married two sisters in Norwalk. The two men became warm friends and finally bought ranches adjoining each other a few miles from the home of their wives. For a long time the brothers-in-law were together as much as possible, but last spring Ball and his wife quarreled. Willett took sides with his sister-in-law against her husband, and the two men became bitter enemies. The quarrel finally grew so bitter that Mrs. Ball sought shelter with the Willette." "Willet then refused to allow Ball to come to see his wife, and for a time it looked as if he could not escape a bloody encounter. But Ball did not propose to get even in that way. He had heard that his brother-in-law was driven out of Western Texas, and he decided to go to that country to investigate. He found Sheriff Bixley last April and learned the story of the Willette-Woodward tragedy. It took Ball some time to work out his plans, but he did not rest until he learned that papers were issued for Willette's arrest. Ball was in the city when Sheriff Aguirre brought Willette in, and he was anxious to identify his brother-in-law, but the officers kept the two men separate, as they were sure they had the right man." Ball was not satisfied, however, so he made up his mind to go to Texas and attend the trial and see his brother-in-law hung, so he boarded the train that carried Willett and the Sheriff out of the city and was present in the depot when Willett escaped. He assisted in the chase and is more anxious than anyone else to see Willett captured, for he knows that if the desperate little man gets a chance he will return and make graveyard freight of his affectionate brother-in-law." Willett was arrested on Tuesday, while mowing in the field. He had such a bad name in Texas that Sheriff Aguirre, fearing his man, refused to allow him to go to the house to change his clothes. He was taken to Los Angeles immediately and turned over to the Texas Sheriff, who set out with him at once for his southern home. It was while en route thither that Willett escape during a temporary stay at Colton, as narrated above. The Date Palm. The following letter was received at the Chamber of Commons in Los Angeles on last Saturday from H. E. Van Deman, United States Pomologist at Washington, D.C., regarding date culture in Southern California: A telegram has just been received from you relative to the distribution of the data trees which I have received from Africa. It seems that a great misapprehension has arisen regarding this matter. They were received some months ago from Egypt and Algeria, and have been kept here for the purpose of disinfecting them of certain insect pests before sending them to their destinations. When we got there Madame sold some property and gave the money to Mr. Burr. After we got back home Madame wanted Mr. Burr to get her some new horses and a carriage out of the money she had given him in Hartford to keep for her, but he had spent it all and so there was a quarrel and that was the start." In fact she was afraid of him after they had quarreled and she would run and hide when she saw him coming to the house, and once she told me to take all the chairs and settees in the parlor and lock them up in some other room, so that when Mr. Burr came to see her he could not sit down and so would not stay long."
