LATE NEWS OF THE WEEK. Republican Whoop-Up and Signal Gun. Senator W. W. Bowers of San Diego, Republican nominee for Congressman from this district, and Hon. J. B. Reddick, Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor, addressed the people of Anaheim last evening on the political issues of the day. A speaker at a stand had been erected on the vacant lot at the corner of Center and Los Angeles streets. A salute of forty anvils was fired, and a large and enthusiastic crowd of people from the city and the countryside were present to attend the whoop up. Messrs. Bowers and Reddick and J. R. Hebbron, Republican candidate for member of the State Board of Equalization in the Fourth District, had addressed a meeting of people at San Diego on Tuesday evening. Messrs. Reddick and Hebbron arrived at Santa Ana on yesterday morning's San Diego Express. They remained visiting friends until late in the afternoon, when they drove to Anaheim in company with E. D. Cooke and F. K. Ludlow of Santa Ana. Senator Bowers arrived on the 8 o'clock San Diego Express, and was met at the depot by a delegation of Republicans. The military band discoursed martial music and the crowd began to gather shortly after 7 o'clock. The avail firing punctuated the music with good effect, and the Markham rose blossomed out in all its fragrance. The meeting was called to order shortly after 8 o'clock by F. K. Ludlow. Supervisor Battlefield was elected Chairman of the meeting, and the following list of Vice Presidents was read: Frank Ey, Dr. Bullard, A. E. Hendricks, Thao Renner, E. J. Pallegrin and W. A. Witte of Anaheim, F. K. Ludlow and E. D. Cooke of Santa Ana, Dr. Spencer and H. A. Ford of Fullerton, J. B. McCullough of Placentia, W. G. Potter of Centralia, Dr. McCoy of Westminster, H. K. Small of Olive and Dave Nichols of Garden Grove. The platform was gayly decorated with red, white and blue hunting. In front of the platform a large streamer bore the inscription "Our Candidates—For Governor, H. H. Markham." For Lieutenant Governor, A Grand Ball. The Native Daughters are making preparations for their ball to be given on the evening of October 29th. Our young ladies are always very successful in giving entertainments, and promise that the evening ball will eclipse anything attempted here in that line for a long time past. We predict that it will be an especially "swagger" affair. To those faint-hearted young gentlemen, who have been unnecessarily frightened by the report that they would be required to appear at the ball in a dress suit apiece, the young ladies desire to say that the report is altogether unfounded. Those gentlemen who always appear in dress suits, including the Gazette's society reporter, will wear dress suits, of course, if they want to be. But all gentlemen who receive invitations to attend the ball will use their own judgment as to the character of their apparel—they may wear trousers decollete from below, or jackets decollete from above, or both. They may wear suspenders to their pants, or may roll them up at the bottom. They will be required to appear in costumes and trousers, besides the other usual paraphernalia of gent's day-time apparel. Comb your hair, boys, currycomb your teeth, take a brisk walk in the open air to steady your nerves, boys, and then go to the ball and dance with the prettiest girls in the room. But don't be frightened by the talk about dress suits, blew your little soals. If you're lucky enough to get an invitation, wear the best you've got and go in for a good time. Sixth District Fair. In another column will be found the advertisement of the eleventh annual fair of the Sixth District Agricultural Association of Los Angeles, which begins October 14th and continues to the 18th. The agricultural and horticultural exhibition will be held at the Chamber of Commerce, and a splendid speed programme is being arranged to take place at the fair grounds at Agricultural Park. Arrangements are progressing in a very satisfactory manner for the fair. The space at the Chamber of Commerce is now limited and all who purpose making an exhibit should not delay in making application to Frank Wiggins, the Superintendent of the horticultural and agricultural display. The Directors anticipate that the stock and cattle exhibit will be worth coming a long way to see this year. Secretary Benjamin is booming this department. Entries for the running and trotting events are coming in from all over California, and high-class sport will be the order of the week. Ladies intending to compete for the prize in the equaterian tournament should send in their names to the Secretary. The programmes of the week's sport will be ready for publication in the next issue of this paper. PERSONAL MEET Mr. Matt Krueshardy is and relatives in Arizona. The meeting was called to order shortly after 8 o'clock by F. K. Ludlow, Supervisorattlefield was elected Chairman of the meeting, and the following list of Vice Presidents was read: Frank Ey, Dr. Bullard, A. E. Hendricks, Thom Rouser, E. J. Pellegrin and W. A. Write of Anaheim, F. K. Ludlow and E. D. Cooke of Santa Ana, Dr. Spencer and H. A. Ford of Fullerton, J. B. McCullough of Placentia, W. G. Patter of Centralia, Dr. McLoy of Westminster, H. K. Small of Olive and Dave Nichols of Garden Grove. The platform was gayly decorated with red, white and blue hunting. In front of the platform a large streamer bore the inscription "Our Candidates—For Governor, H. H. Markham, For Lieutenant-Governor, J. B. Rodlick, For Congress, Senator W. Bowers." The first speaker of the evening was Mr. Rodlick. He was followed by Senator Bowers. Mr. Hebbron spoke last. Each speech was frequently interrupted by applause. All were latened to with wrap attention. Unfortunately the lateness of the hour precludes the possibility of our giving a more extended report of the speeches. Mr. Rodlick is a pleasant-faced gentleman who hails from the far-famed county of Calaveras. As he sat in his carriage before the speaker's stand yesterday afternoon, shortly after his arrival from Santa Ana, he looked the picture of good health and contentment. Mr. Hebbron, a Monterey farmer, is distinguished looking gentleman. Both have been met by crowds of Republicans during their trip through the State, and both are making votes wherever they go. They are confident of the election of the Republican ticket in November. Messrs. Rodlick, Hebbron, Ludlow and Cooke were entertained at dinner last evening by Captain Wood. The two first named gentlemen expressed great confidence with the canvass as it had thus far progressed, and anticipated a glorious victory in November. The distinguished visitors called at this office last evening, where they were met by a number of the Republicans of the valley. They leave this morning for Visalia, where a Republican meeting will be held this evening. County Clerk Wickham and W. S. Taylor were among the Santa Ana visitors. The Assembly Convention The Seventy-eighth Assembly District Convention, which was to have met at Music Hall this morning to nominate an Assemblyman, has been postponed until next Saturday. The reason for this postponement is the inability of the Los Angeles Republican County Convention to name their set of delegates in time to attend the convention today. The Los Angeles convention met yesterday, and have not yet concluded their labors. Their delegates to the Assembly Convention will probably be named today. The nomination for Assemblyman has almost gone a-begging. Dr. Spencer would have had a walk-over for the nomination, but he was compelled by his private business interests, to withdraw from the contest. The name of F. G. Ryan was then proposed and met with favor, but he also was compelled to decline the honor, because of a non-sufficient term of residence. The law requires an Assemblyman to be a resident of his district for three years, and Mr. Ryan lacks a month, we believe, of filling that requirement. The candidates to come before the convention are Robert McPherson of McPherson and S. M. Craddick of Orange. Geo. Hayford of Santa Ana also aspires to the nomination. The Prohibits met in convention at Santa Ana on Monday and nominated the following county ticket: District Attorney, E. K. Koech of Santa Ana; Sheriff, Geo. M. Doyle or Santa Ana; Clerk, Fred. Saxton of Santa Ana; Auditor, Geo. Mack of Westminster; Recorder, C.E.Way of El Modena; Tax Collector, C.C.Collina of Santa Ana; Assessor, Wiley Harris of Orange; Surveyor, F.Olmsted of Santa Ana; Superintendent of Schools, J.A.Pope of Santa Ana; Treasurer, F.S.Hell, Santa Ana; Coroner, L.C.Thompson of Tustin; Assemblyman, Aaron-Huddleston of Santa Ana. No candidate for Superior Judge has yet been named. A County Central Committee was appointed, but by a singular coincidence Anaheim was given no representation on it whatever. We suggest that Peter Huff rise up and explain why this is thusly. Farmers' Alliance Meeting The official organizer of the National Farmers' Alliance of America, Mrs. Anna F., Smith, will speak at a free public meeting at Kroeger's-Hall to-morrow afternoon. All the farmers should attend, as it is desirable that Anaheim should form an alliance in order to be represented at the County Alliance Convention to be held in Los Angeles on October 4th. The Alliance now claims nearly four million members and expects to force Congress to consider the interests of agriculture more favorably in the future than it has done in the past. Buenas Park Notes Rev. Mr. Cash of Los Angeles preached for the Congregationalists last Sunday. The L.M.A.S.met at Mrs. Whitaker's last Thursday. Arrangements were made for a grand quiling party at Whitaker's Hall today. Lunch will be served at noon. Mr.Wagner has been spending the week at Garden Grove. Mr.Adamson of Los Angeles was in town Monday buying hogs. The Y.P.L.C.E.will hold a social at the home of Mrs.D.J.Young Friday evening. This society is increasing in numbers rapidly. The meetings are well attended. Last Sunday was held a consecration meeting. The roll-call was responded to very promptly by the active members. Miss Jennie Neebum is going to Los Angeles to attend school. Leora Spidell is attending the Sister's school in Anaheim. Mrs.Spangler from Oregon has been visiting her sister,Mrs.Spidell.She returned to her home last week. Democratic Hair-Pulling There were two tickets in the field and a whole lot of fun at the Democratic primaries on Saturday. Both tickets contained the names of John Everhart, J. J. Schaeider, Chas. Schindler and F. A. Korn, the Democracy of all of whom was acceptable to both factions of the local untrified. There were five delegates to be sent, and the honor of being the fifth delegate was contested by Chas. Hilmer and Frank Steadman, each supported by the rival "butcher faction." The local Democracy rent was to the core. There were more butchers on the streets than would patch the Chicago stockyards for a mile. One factionist said the other crowd had voted about thirty Mexicans who came into town a couple of weeks ago to pack the Republican caucus. When the smoke of battle cleared away at 5 o'clock in the evening, it was seen that 98 votes had been polled, of which Hillmer and Steadman had received 49 each. As the fight resulted in a draw, Anaheim will probably be entitled to six delegates in the convention, each of the two baltimore being given half a vote. Meanwhile the price of beef remains the same. A Fine Piece of Work. E. W. Champlain has completed a hand-some and very serviceable cabinet for Secretary Gardiner of the irrigation district. The work reflects credit upon its maker, and adds greatly to the appearance of the Secretary's office. The cabinet will be used for the filing of papers, documents, etc., belonging to the district and for the safekeeping of the books of the office. Some of the carpenter work lately done for the district is of such poor quality that the expenditure for it was but little better than money thrown away. If all this work were given to competent mechanics, like Mr. Champlain, the people of the district would be better satisfied, there would be no late yet. The roll-call was responded to very promptly by the active members. Miss Jennie Neebum is going to Los Angeles to attend school. Leora Spidell is attending the Sister's school in Anaheim. Mrs. Spangler from Oregon has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Spidell. She returned to her home last week. The Condensed Milk and Coffee Company shipped a hundred cases of milk to China last week. Everybody likes the milk and coffee, and it is meeting with great favor wherever it is introduced. The Orange County Molasses Company is doing finely turning out lots of syrup. There is a free Methodist camp meeting being held in Orangethorpe avenue. It is well attended and the leaders are earnestly working in the good cause. They expect to remain three weeks. Mrs. Dugass and her sons returned to Los Angeles last week. They have been guests of Mrs. Wagner. Richard Archibald has moved into his new cottage on Orangethorpe avenue. Mr. Thompson has moved into the place recently occupied by K. C. Archibald. Miss Eva Archibald returned from Los Angeles last Saturday. Whitaker and Deering are shipping lots of chickens and eggs. Carl Eytel has returned from his vacation and is again on his ranch. He has some fine sketches of the places in Southern California that he visited. BUENA. The Official Figures. A Washington dispatch says that the canals office has made public the following figures of population in Southern California: County: 1802 1806 Increase Ivy: 3,544 2,925 614 Los Angeles: 101,410 36,361 68,029 Orange (new): 13,554 San Bernardino: 26,456 7,795 17,790 San Diego: 34,074 8,016 28,000 Santa Barbara: 15,729 8,513 6,247 Ventura: 10,005 4,078 4,002 The population for the whole district in 264,075. In 1880 the population was 67,229. The increase is 137,376 or 204.12 per cent. The Consul General announces the population of cities as follows: Los Angeles 6394, increase of 39,211; San Diego 16,153, increase of 18,516; Santa Barbara 5,849, increase of 2,389. Queen Victoria has a remarkably fine head of hair, for a lady of her age; but her nose, the Prince of Wales, is quite bald.
