The Weekly Gazette. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. Memry Kuchat, Charles Kuchat, Editors and Producers. THURSDAY... SEPTEMBER 11, 1850. A caucus of the Republicans of this prescinct will be held one evening next week to nominate five delegates to be elected at the primary election to the Republican County Convention, which meets at Santa Ana on Tuesday, the 231st instant. The time for the caucus has not yet been determined upon, but several of the members of the party have agreed on next Thursday evening. This, however, will be left to the judgment of the party, and be settled upon in a day or two. It is desired that a full turnout of Republicans assemble in caucus, that a representative delegation of citizens be selected to attend the convention. This being the first straight-out Republican convention to be held in the county, the thought finds expression that a well-selected delegation should be selected to represent us in the party's council. There is to be no "packing" for this candidate or that. We shall have a free field and a fair fight. Let every Republican in this town turn out and do his duty. It is for them to say whom our delegates shall be. In our last issue we gave the law and the decision by the Supreme Court affirming its validity governing the vaccination of school children. The time has come when this law must be enforced. The school trustees have no choice in the matter. The State Board of Health has taken up the subject, and is about to begin a crusade against those school trustees who have not seen it that the law has been carried out. It is probable that very few children now attending the public schools of Anaheim are unvaccinated. Still there are some, and these must be vaccinated, or the school trustees, unwillingly perhaps, will be forced to forbid their attendance at school. Ample time will be given them to get vaccinated from the date of this notice. But afterwards, no child will be permitted to attend public schools until this has been done. For those parents who are unable to pay for vaccination, it will be done free of expense to them by the health officer (Dr. Bullard). The law provides that in all such cases, the trustees themselves will be responsible for the vaccination of the indigent children. One notice will be given in the same manner as before. A petition was being circulated for signatures yesterday, asking the Board of Supervisors to obtain the opinion of the District Attorney or the State Attorney General as to whether Mr. Lattfield holds over as Supervisor of this district. It has all along been understood that no successor was to be elected, but lately there has been some discussion as to whether his term of office expires with the other members of our Board of Supervisors or not. Mr. Lattfield was elected two years ago, and drew the long-term lot in the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, thus extending his incumbency of the office to four years. As the Orange county bill provides that all officers of Los Angeles county residing in Orange county shall hold their offices precisely as though no division had been made, it is difficult to understand how Mr. Lattfield's term can be made to expire before his four-years' term shall have run out. The imprint of a gentleman's hand, found upon a young lady's bedice when she returned to camp one evening not long ago from a stroll at one of the summer resorts not far from here, has driven some of the gossips in town into a state. We see no impropriety in the circumstance at all—only that the gentleman should have worn gloves, perhaps, or have had his hands scrubbed before strolling with his inmate. As gentlemen do not wear gloves at summer resorts—we believe it's not the fashion—the young man should have taken the other precaution, and seen that his hands were clean before placing them in such a delicate place as on a young lady's bodice—especially too, when, as in the case under dissection, the lady is attired in white. But there is no impropriety in the act, that we can see, and the gossips should cease talking about it. TRIP TO FRESNO. Enormous troops of grain and grapes seen on the Way. EDITOR GAZETTE. Having just returned from a trip of business and pleasure to the three great grain, stock and fruit counties there are some, and these must be vaccinated, or the school trustees, unwillingly perhaps, will be forced to forbid their attendance at school. Due notice will be given in the schools of the date after which no unvaccinated children will be permitted to attend. Meanwhile, it behooves all parents whose children are unvaccinated to have the matter attended to at once. Oak local company of militia is back again in the Seventh Regiment, or, more properly, the Seventh Battalion, which, however, will be known as a regiment again on the election of a Colonel, which takes place on the 20th instant. Our guardaman's experience while in the Ninth Regiment was not unpleasant. In fact, nothing occurred to denote whether the company was lodged in the Seventh or Ninth. Col. Allen of Los Angeles is spoken of as candidate for Colonel of the reorganized regiment. The transfer of our company back to its old regiment, whence it was taken to play its part in a comedy of stupid political folly, meets with the approbation of every one of its guardmen. Now that it is back again in the Seventh, let us hope no such disgraceful things as a Colonel's thievery or a Governor's stupid prostitution of his powers will ever again cause the regiment's disruption. Pror. Keran, Republican aspirant for County Superintendent of Schools, was in Anahism last week, looking after his political fences on this side of the river. The Professor is a high-grade teacher of excellent reputation and a gentleman whom it is a pleasure to meet. His friends in this part of the county are lagion. His services to the party in various ways are entirely worthy of recognition, especially when he is so admirably adapted to the office which he seeks. We believe Prof. Keran will be nominated, and if so, he will undoubtedly be elected. To morrow the irrigators' convention assembles at Tulare. Representatives of the various irrigation districts throughout the State are to most by invitation of the Directors of Tulare Irrigation District, for the purpose of forming a State association. Other persons interested in and friendly to the system of irrigation established by the Wright law have been invited to be present and take part in the deliberations of the convention. It is to be hoped that the meeting will be well attended and prolific of good results. If a strong association can be To morrow the irrigators' convention assembles at Tulare. Representatives of the various irrigation districts throughout the State are to meet by invitation of the Directors of Tulare Irrigation District, for the purpose of forming a State association. Other persons interested in and friendly to the system of irrigation established by the Wright law have been invited to be present and take part in the deliberations of the convention. It is to be hoped that the meeting will be well attended and prolific of good results. If a strong association can be formed, representing all the districts in the State, it can accomplish everything that could be accomplished by State management of irrigation, while escaping the disadvantages of that plan. By furnishing a means of concentrating expert opinion upon the Legislature the association could secure the passage of any new laws that might be necessary to perfect the present system. The Shadow that edits the Santa Ana Free Press (who resembles the picture of the fellow labeled "Before Taking" in the patent-medicine advertisements), conscious of his own conspious failure as an editor, recently had the bad luck to ask the Republican County Central Committee to appoint an "advisory committee" to inspire if not indicate his editorials during the campaign. Why the Little Sardine stopped short of asking the entire committee to help him out, is quite beyond our understanding. But while grasping at this straw to save his worthless political neck, the Shadow shouldn't have stitched himself. Drowning men are not modest. The whole embodie of the committee, anyhow, would have their hands full to make a newspaper of the sheak, the only journalistic qualifications of the "managing editor" of which are that he possesses piles and men had the gall to attempt to play "Hamlet." Senator Bowers of San Diego was nominated for Congress by the Republican convention at Ventura on Thursday afternoon. Only two ballots were necessary to name a choice of candidates. The plan just been completed at a cost of $7,000. From Tulare we went to Visalia. This is one of the oldest towns in the State, and in proportion to its population one of the richest. It is situated in the center of a timber belt of white oaks. Here we saw the old-fashioned worm-trail fence. With stakes and riders, it reminded me of the timbered country of western Pennsylvania, my boyhood home. Grapes and all kinds of pitted fruits do well here. We saw a box of 30 poaches that weighed forty pounds. While here we received courtesies from J. H. Moody, one of the enterprising Supervisors, who is justly proud of the financial condition of Tulare county, with not a dollar of indebtedness and all warrants at par, and with cash to meet them. They have just completed a new jail, which must be a terror to evildoers. We met there also Thomas Holder, Deputy County Clerk. He showed us over the town and through the courthouse. He crossed the plains in company with Amos Wright and the Taylors in 1868. They settled in Anaheim and he went north. We also shook the hand of Mr. Patrick, who edits a live paper, the Tulare Times; also met an old acquaintance of 1869, M. E. Bowen. This is a great grain and stock county. One man we met, J. J. Kern of Linse, Tulare county, raised 150,000 sacks of wheat, containing two bushels each. To harvest this immense crop he had two steam harvesters and two 24-horse harvesters, that cut and threshed at the same time, and live 24-foot headers and two steam threshers. The land is principally held in large trunks by rich men who don't care to subdivide. The fruit industry is yet in its infancy. Business here appears to be very good. Two stores in the town employ 22 clerks each. In one of them is a young man whose father I knew. He was in the agricultural department. His employers offered him, as an incentive, a gold watch and chain if he would sell 150 mowing machines during the season. He now carries the watch and chain. From Tulare we went to Freesoan. While there the Republican Congregational Convention was in session, and as there were three candidates backed by their friends, sixty ballots were taken and no nomination made. While in that town we inspected the great rainy vineyards. We were under obligations to Thea Hughes for courtesies. He got his carriage and spent half a day in showing us vinyard after vinyard. There the crops of grapes are simply enormous. At least 12 tums and many of them 16 tums to the area. They will make four tons on an average of rains and they are selling at 50 cents per pound in every bounce on Hill Avenue on April 14th. I may not be old anymore, Richard Knake.
