FARM NOTES.
"A farmer's true capital consists of a clear head, sound judgment and a willing pair of hands."
Search for the borers whenever you have nothing to do, and search for them regularly also, if you wish to save your peach tree.
Ice will not prevent odors if the vessels in which milk is kept are not clean. Even the refrigerator should be well washed occasionally.
Skim milk cheese is said to be worth one cent a pound as manure and three cents a pound as food for hogs, its cost being about two cents a pound. Much is the proper use for cheese of that kind.
It will be time to reclaim the waste places of the earth when the already cultivated ones are made to produce full crops. The work before us is to make the most of what we have instead of hunting for more.
It is sometimes difficult to sow turnip seed, but the Farm Journal says that a pound of turnip seed and a peck of sand, mixed, for one acre will enable one to get an even stand of plants neither too thick or too thin.
Keep down all growth around the trunks of trees. Buckers grow very fast, and take the investment that should be given to the tree. All undesirable shoots on trees should be removed as soon as they appear.
Dependent of the Lace Stock Inhibitor assay, I am invest $1,000 in sheep and burn some pound of wool produced for five years and make more clear money than can be made on cattle or rogs in the same length of time.
Some farmers consider certain marks in a crop as indicating her quality as a milker, but a better guarantee to weigh her milk regularly. That tells the story without any guesswork and tells exactly what every owner ought to know.
In bringing poultry for market is a profitable ability to treat growing, as the poultry can be used in winter employment, for but little work can be done with the orchard at that season. The raising of early broilers is done entirely in the winter.
There is quite a difference in the breeds of chickens. A Pelican can be made to weigh five pounds when ten weeks old, while the common Puffed Duck will only weigh three pounds when a year old. Breeds make the production less as well as the food.
Some kind of covering to shed off water will be advantage to attacks of hay or fodder. But few farmers take pains to thus protect their attacks, and the result is that both spring approaches the hay or fodder from a condition that renders it unpalatable to stock.
As a machine whenever it can be done, if you want to keep up with your enterprising neighbors, and get a machine that can be applied to all kinds of work done in the house alone, then possible. The labor of farmers' wives should be leased in every department.

Has a machine whenever it can be done, if you want to keep up with your enterprising growers, and get a machine that can be applied to all kinds of work done in the house alone when possible. The labor of farmers' wives should be lessened in every department.
The average production per acre of land can be largely increased, and by high farming with every foot of ground made to yield its fullest capacity, the productions of the country would equal those of China or Japan, where all farms are but little larger than or gardens.
For wing weeds in the pig pen in order to make manure is an old custom, but weeds in the contain seeds should be destroyed in some other manner. It is from the manure big that weeds are hauled out and spread on the farm, in the shape of seed, and especially from the pig pen.
Farmers roots, like leaves, perform their functions for the season and die, says Thomas Mason, the eminent horticulturist. Such being the case rapid growth of rootlets should be encouraged by manuring early and coaxing in a manner so as to keep the audience that the rootlets may have greater opportunities.
Whenever the pastures begin to turn out with crops have difficulty in securing county of food, feed more grain or hay at the barn. To keep in full flow of milk the cow must be supplied either from the barn or the pasture and as the pasture fluctuates in its supply grass it must not be wholly depended upon.
Professor Hickman, of the Ohio station, says: "The greatest amount of marketable crops has been produced where the stalk managed twelve inches apart. The variations which were slight whether plantated one given every twelve inches, two every twenty-three every thirty-six inches, or four every forty-eight inches."
The benefit of improved stock is that it is an interesting force in farm life. The owner of improved stock will now feel satisfied to sow deep-prepared, and he studies, into stock-breeding and feeding so as to avoid the re-production. It teaches him to think more than in the past and thinking farmers are usually most easter farmers.
The stable hold be plowed and turnip seed is broadcast thenceon, not only will it be destroyed, but much of the seed will be turned upon which the sheep must be used to run later on. Turnips must be excellent material for sowing in, or they may be left in winter for sheep in some fields need shade as well as sun. Set out plum trees in the yard, and the home will destroy the grubs and enrich the soil; that with a little trouble and expense you can raise some of the most delicious fruit. With certain poultrymen this plan worked well and paid handsomely. Try the plan next spring and see if you are not satisfied.
Turnips and choice mutton are point articles on English farms. No English farmer would attempt to raise sheep without turpins as one of his crops. It is possible that the growing of more turpins in this country may be an advantage to those who keep sheep. Every farmer should give turpins...
Yards need shade as well as sun. Set out apple plum trees in the yard, and the honeys that with a little trouble and expense you can raise some of the most delicious fruit. With certain poultrymen this plan worked well and paid handsomely. Try the joint next spring and see if you are not satisfied.
Purps and choice mutton are joint articles on English farms. No English farmer would attempt to raise sheep without turpins as one of his crops. It is possible that the growing of more turpins in this country may be an advantage to those who keep sheep. Every farmer should give turpins and sheep a trial where it can be done with a prospect of profit.
Professor Linthner's remedy for bark lice is as follows: Slack stone lime as for white-wash, and to two thirds of a bucketful add a pint of gas tar, one pound of whale oil soap dissolved in hot water, one pound of common soft soak, one pound of potash or one pint of strong lye; also clay or loam enough to make the wash of proper thickness to be applied with a brush.
Grapes in early districts are now ripening. The Chasselas have turned golden in some sections and Zinfandel and Mataro are showing signs of purple. But most wine-grape men, despite the signs of a favorable vintage, see little hope in the outlook for wine-making. Many producers have determined to dry all their product and are now making all plans to that end. Dried wine grapes are worth only what the nearest wine maker is disposed to give, ranging from $12 to $16 a ton for ordinary varieties. The report comes from a good source that four of the largest wine-makers about Fresno will dry their grapes this season.
Not all wine makers are despondent. There is for example, Juno H. Wheeler, who from having for years been chief executive officer of the State Commission, is one of the best known viticulturists in the State. He is one who believes there must always be a market for good wines, and feels that the man who can afford to hold his wine and properly age it must come out ahead financially.
