It was a long ride from where he sighted the northern end of the village to where he struck its center round that hold point of bluff, and from the start to the moment his guides whirled into view, and his troopers came galloping "front into line" down near the Ford, he never fairly saw the great village he never dreamed of its depth and extent. Rounding the Bluff, he suddenly found himself face to face with thousands of the boldest and most skillful warriors of the prairies. He had hoped to charge at once into the heart of the village, to hear the cheers of Keno's men from the south. Instead he was greeted with a perfect fury of flame and hissing lead from the dense ticket of willow and cottonwood, a fire that had to be answered at once. Quickly he dismounted his men and threw them forward on the run, each fourth man holding cavalry fashion, the horses of the other three. The line seems to have swept in parallel very nearly with the general course of the stream, but to no purpose. The foe was ten to one in their front. Boys and squaws were shooting from the willows ("Oh, we have plenty guns!" said our story-tellers); and worse than that, hundreds of young warriors had mounted their ponies and awarmed across the stream below him, hundreds more following and circling all about him. And then it was that Custer, the hero of a hundred darling charges, seems to have realized that he must out his way out. "Mount!" rang the trumpets, and leaving many a poor fellow on the ground, the troops ran for their horses. Instantly from lodge and willow Ogallallas and Brules sprang to horse and rushed to the fords in mad pursuit. "Make for the heights!" must have been the order, for the first rush was eastward; they more to the left, as they found their progress barred. Then, as they reached higher ground, all they could see, far as they could see, circling swooping, yelling like demons, and all the time keeping up their furious fire, were thousands of the mounted Sioux. Hemmed to outfall, dropping fast from their saddles, Custer's men saw that the retreat was impossible. They sprang to the ground, turned their horses loose," said the Indians, and by that time half their number had fallen. A skirmish line was thrown down the slope, and there they dropped at five yards' interval; there their comrades found them two days after. Every instant the foe rode closer and gained in numbers; every instant some poor fellow hit the dust. At last, on a mound that stands at the northern end of a little ridge, Custer, with Cook, Yates, and guardant "Brother Tom," and some dozen soldiers, all that were left by this time, gathered in their last rally. They sold their lives deeply, brave fellows that they were; but they were as a dozen to the leaves of the Honey in Peanuts Last year G. W. Archer, who owns a colony trust in Kitchener celony, about one and a half miles northwest of Traver, set out two and a half acres of peanuts between his young vines. The grapevines were one year old, but bore considerable last year, and that year the two-year-old vines were heavily loaded, proving that the peanuts did not injure the grapevines; but on the contrary, Mr. Archer is of the opinion that they helped the grapevines by retaining the moisture in the soil. When he harvested his peanut crop last fall the ground underneath the peanuts was full of moisture, after the long hot summer was over. Mr. Archer estimates that there were 300 sacks of peanuts produced on the two and a half acres. He did not harvest the entire crop, as the early rains and a slight mistake he made in cultivation prevented it. Out of curiosity he one day pulled up a vine and counted the nuts theretoon and found 500. He thinks that this year he will be able to handle and harvest the entire crop of volunteer peanuts, and expects to realize a handsome sum therefrom. He found a good demand for the nuts, and all he had to parties in Traver, Freano and San Francisco. He realized a trifle over its amount for all the peanuts he harvested. Had he gathered the entire crop from the two and a half acres he would have received the sing-sum of $600, or $240 per acre and this oil land set to raise grapes. This spring a volunteer crop of peanuts came up under the tract. Mr. Archer dug those up that came up close to the grapevines. He says that the peanut vines last year would each cover a space four feet square. A Hidden Gold Mine Elmora News There is a mine of gold near Elmore which has not yet been discovered that will make a lucky man ten times a millionaire. It is known to exist by the pieces of floating gold found in the little gulches up the river from the station, some of them as large as a man's thumb nail. The ledge is unidoublely covered out of site by drift and slides, but is sure to be found within the next few years by someone. One prospector picked up many small pieces of gold in a little gulch near the station a few days after the rain, had been washed over the bed rock. There are no genuine prospectors searching for it but "a greenhorn for luck," and we expect to chronicle the discovery of the traditional "Round hill" mine before many more moons.
