A July, September in the sky. Five of the earth's sister planets, Venus, Saturn, Uranus, Mars and Jupiter, are now visible in the evening. They are strong through the sky from east to west, Venus setting just as Jupiter is rising, and the others being scattered along the arch of the zodiac between the two which terminate the line. It is at present a doubtful contest between Jupiter and Venus for the first place in brilliancy, but in a few weeks Venus, which is approaching the earth and consequently growing brighter, will have become incontestably brighter than her gigantic rival. Saturn is only some twelve or fifteen degrees from Venus, near the star Regulus in Leo, and is not a conspicuous phenomenon in the presence of his brilliant sister. Uranus is quite near the bright star Spica, in Virgo, and although visible to a sharp eye without optical aid, should be looked for with the help of an opera glass and a planisphere or star map, on which its position among the neighboring small stars has been jotted down. Mars is in the singular constellation of Scorpio, whose long-winding assemblage of stars may be seen just in the south about 9 o'clock. Mars is not quite so bright as Venus, and its ruddy color will readily serve to distinguish it. Jupiter is far over in the east in the constellation Capricornus, and does not get well clear of the mists of the horizon before about 10 o'clock. When it is risen sufficiently high and the air is clear, a good field glass easily shows its four moons, which appear as tiny specks of light almost swallowed up in the glare of the great planet. If the observer does not see them the first time he tries he should not conclude that his glass is incapable of seeing them. They may be too close to the planet, and some of them may be at the time, in eclipse from Jupiter's shadow, or in the act of passing either behind or in front of the planet. Their motions are so rapid that a considerable change in their relative positions may be witnessed in the course of an evening. It will be found a very interesting occupation by the way, to take an opera glass and begin with a good look at Venus before one sets, follow the line of the Zodiac, along which the planet line, over into the east, where Jupiter is rising. The observer will pass across the constellations of Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius and into Capricornus, beholding some of the richest cemetry in the starry heavens. This is particularly true of Scorpio and Sagittarius, where the broad stream of the Milky Way is grasped. Here some of the finest star centers and star swarms may be seen, and a powerful glass will reveal an amazing amount of detail, where the stars are behind like allery banks of pebbles. Epoch. The transition from long, lingering and painful sickness to robust health is an epoch in the life of the individual. Such a remarkable event is treasured in the memory and Premium List Offered by the San Francisco Weekly Examiner The Weekly Examiner has again made an important stride in the form of advertising itself, procuring an additional number of subscribers, and furnishing an opportunity to the latter of becoming the possessors of a list of premiums valued at $50,000. Every subscriber who will send b fore November 14th, $1.50 for one year's subscription to the Weekly Examiner, and every old subscriber who will send before November 15th, $1.50 for the renewal of his subscription from the time of expiration, will be given his chance of four beautiful pictures, which are regarded as masterpieces of modern art. They are Makowsky's "Russian Welding Land," Rosa Enheur's "Scottish Raid," Millet's "Angelus," and Meissomer's "Friedland 1907." In addition to the pictures, which are given to every subscriber, is the collection of prizes which will be given away. The lands, bloomed stock, furniture, agricultural implements, etc., will be scattered all over the coast. Every article must go to a subscriber. Each subscriber, on the receipt of $1.50, will be given a numbered receipt. On Monday, November 18th, numbers corresponding to the receipts given to subscribers will be given to a committee of representative business men, who will award the premiums on a past and equitable basis. These gentlemen will see that every article is awarded to a subscriber. Space will not permit a full list of the prizes, but it comprises everything from a porcelain lined bake dish, valued at $9, or a course in shorthand, valued at $100, and an iron safe at $125, up to ten acres of orange land, valued at $3,500.
