An Irrigation Convention. The Board of Directors of the Talare Irrigation District has invited the directors and officers of the various irrigation districts in the State, and friends of the district system to meet in convention at Talare on the 12th of September to form a State association of district officers, and to compare notes and disease problems which are of mutual interest. This invitation should meet with a cordial and general response, for there is no subject of more vital interest and importance to California than that irrigation, and none in which the value of system can be more appreciated. There are many subjects which will properly present themselves for the consideration of such a convention. It is likely that additional legislation may be found necessary in the future; that concerted action may be required to defend the laws already enacted; that public interests in irrigation may need to be arisen, and, above all, that public confidence is the stability of the irrigation system, and in the responsibility and readiness of the various districts to meet their obligations be created, if it does not already exist, or strengthened, if it does exist. In this connection the Talare Register makes a suggestion that the Legislature might extend direct aid to certain districts by issuing bonds of the State, disposing of them, and with the proceeds taking up the bonds of the irrigation districts. As a matter of public policy there might be no objection to such a plan, since the whole State recognizes the value of the irrigation system under this district plan, and feels certain that the irrigation bonds are just as good as any bonds can be; but we think our contemporary, on examining the question, will find a constitutional obstacle to such action. Section 31 of article IV seems to put it out of the power of the Legislature to assist the irrigation system in such a way. But even if this cannot be done the irrigation convention will doubleless be able to devise ways and means to which no legal objection can be taken for making the irrigation bonds more salable. The Supreme Court has already upheld the constitutionality of the law under which they have been issued, and the only thing which stands in their way is the timidity of capital and the dislike of moneyed men to invest in new enterprises. To cure this timidity and remove this dislike there can be nothing more effective than concerted action. A convention of the officers of all the irrigation districts of the State cannot but command the respect of those who are seeking investments for their money, and that respect will certainly engender confidence. For these and many other reasons it is to be hoped that the Talare convention will be largely attended, that harmony may attend and characterize its sessions and that it may result in conferring the fullest measure of confidence upon the district system of irrigation and upon the obligation for which the several districts have To cure this timidity and remove this dislike there can be nothing more effective than concerted action. Unsurpassed Fruit Crops. The wildest ravings of a real-estate boomer in regard to the productive possibilities of our valley have fallen far abort of the actual reality of this year's apricot crop. J. N. Smith has gathered up to date nearly six tons of apricots from four acres of trees, and the end is not yet. He employs about twenty pickers and pitters, and there are still three or four weary days' work ahead of them. They not only consume all the daylight, but work away into the night—often into "the wee sna' hours" of the next morning. Mr. Smith has Damson trees upon his place that, if I were to try to describe their appearance and the amount of fruit upon them, the description would be branded as a California story by the skeptical Easterner. At the lowest estimate Mr. Smith will clear $350 per acre from his apricots. What is the use of talking of high-priced lands in the face of such facts as those? There is no limit to the possibilities of fruit-culture in our valley if people will only pay the same attention to details that they do in other branches of business.
