Editors and Proprietors.
THURSDAY JULY 10, 1859.
The editor of this journal is skipping the trailing at Santa Barbara, along with the other editors of the California press. If this paper is a little more readable than is usually the case, his absence undoubtedly accounts for the fact. He will return during the latter part of the week, to which time all claims upon the fighting editor of this office are respectfully asked to be deferred.
The lot on the corner of Center and Los Angeles streets, where the Planters' Hotel stood, is without a particle of doubt the very finest piece of property in Anaheim.
It is understood that the insurance companies have favorably considered a plan to rebuild the hotel in view of the payment of the insurance, which sum amounts in the aggregate something like $9,600.
Mr. Griffith, the Los Angeles capitalist who carried an $4,000 mortgage on the premises, is quoted as saying that a modern three story brick building, with stores on the ground floor, would be a paying investment, if erected on the site of the burned building.
This is very acceptable news at this particular juncture.
Let an understanding be arrived at, and the building rebuilt.
We want to see a palatial three story brick erected on the corner. Certainly the lot cannot be allowed to remain idle.
By all means rebuild the hotel, and that at once.
Several of the painters of our city have complained that they were unfairly treated by the School Trustees of this district in the matter of painting our schoolhouses. We are informed that no attempt was made to ask for bids for doing the work, and that the job was given to Mr. Weaver before it was known that he would do his work cheaper than the other painters resident here. There is no doubt that Mr. Weaver will perform his work well, but the interests of the taxpayers of the district would best be insuranced by giving the work to the lowest responsible dead. In the second year the fruit drums up and the leaves shrivel as from heavy rain. In the third year the growth is much reduced and the vine dies. Some vines had as long as five years, but there is usually the limit. Some Malacarons have been known to die in numbers within six months from being first attacked. What causes the disease has not been discovered. Bedroats and fungi have been found, but it cannot be told whether they are a cause or an effect. No insects that could have caused the disease have been found. It is a fortunate thing for Preno county, that the disease has not reached there. A disease much like this has been known in Sicily and Italy for 20 years, and is there known as the Mal Nero. But home of the symptoms observed here are so different from this that the diseases are not the same, or that we have more than one kind of disease here in California. Most of the symptoms that do not correspond to those of Mal Nero, might come under the head of Folletage, another Italian disease. But nothing is certain as yet in this respect.
Last spring we planted a large number of diseased cuttings in hothouse owned by the commission of Los Angeles. Half of them we treated with different preparations of Ongertb's powder, and the other half we left alone. In the fall the untreated ones were dead, while nearly all the others were healthy. Later we experimented in a vinyard of 1,000 acres, making three applications of the powder. Each application checked the disease, but in the fall it returned again.
Present prospectors are very good. The growth was late in starting, but has been excellent and the crop will probably be large. The hot weather of the next two months may alter this, however, by bringing the disease out in full force again.

Plentiful Supply of Water - The Arigation District's Mends.
Editor Gazette — We are informed by the zanjero that he will have difficulty in getting rid of the water this week. The north or foothill branch is hardly large enough to supply the demands in that direction, and keep up with the south or Orange-thorpe branch. As water is so plentiful and potatoes dear, why would it not be a good scheme for the farmers each to plant an acre or two of potatoes next month? No investment will pay as well for the labor as this. It is better to have 50 or 100 sacks to sell at a good price than to be buying for family use all winter. The money comes handy to pay taxes, buy Christmas presents, etc.
I see that the irrigation directors as a matter of economy deferred advertising the bonds for two monthes. It will take nearly

We are informed that no attempt was made to ask for bids for doing the work, and that the job was given to Mr. Weaver before it was known that he would do his work cheaper than the other painters resident here. There is no doubt that Mr. Weaver will perform his work well, but the interests of the taxpayers of the district would best be served by giving the work to the lowest responsible bidder. It will take probably between $400 and $500 to paint both our schoolhouses. To give so large a job to one painter without even asking for bids from other responsible painters of our city seems like rather a funny way of doing business. If no bids are to be asked for at all, the work should at least be divided, so that the appearance of favoritism, which people are now charging against the Trustees, might be done away with.
We will discover on the census returns being made public that we have three cities with a population exceeding a million. A decade ago we had but one, and twenty years ago none of that size. Every census gathering makes clearer the fact that the drift of civilization is to concentrate population in cities and towns and thin it in agricultural districts. It can scarcely be said that this is due to a distate for rural life, since it is largely the aim of the city residents to possess agricultural property, and the small holdings by metropolitan residents are amazingly increasing. But it does signify that there is a disposition to own rather than occupy except as a retreat and a pleasure on widely separated occasions; agricultural lands. The metropolitan wants to own land, but he is not disposed to till it with his own hands. Agricultural labor he enjoys by proxy. Whether this is to result in good or ill to the people is the problem. We believe that dislike for country life and its labor as a means of livelihood is to be deplored and ought to be discouraged.
The Republican primary election will be held on Saturday, July 19th. Delegates will be elected to attend the Republican County Convention, which will convene at Santa Ana on Saturday, July 26th. Only delegates to the State, Assembly and Congressional conventions will be elected at that time. The nominations for county officers will be made at some future date, which as yet has not been decided upon.
Major W. H. Bonsall of Los Angeles has been urged by his many friends to become a candidate before the Republican State Convention for the position of one of the three Railroad Commissioners and has consented to do so. He is, however, a warm supporter of Col. H. H. Markham, Southern Cali-

I see that the irrigation directors as a matter of economy deferred advertising the bonds for two months. It will take nearly one month to advertise another month to receive bids, perhaps none of them satisfactory; thus another delay of two months and winter will be upon us, and no work done. Two months is but a short time in twenty years, and this thing of saving at the spigot and wasting at the bunghole is poor economy. Sell you bonds, gentlemen, and shove the work. Prepare for possible dry seasons; and you will then carry out the work you were elected to do.

Major W. H. Bonsall of Los Angeles has been urged by his many friends to become a candidate before the Republican State Convention for the position of one of the three Railroad Commissioners and has consented to do so. He is, however, a warm supporter of Col. H. H. Markham, Southern California's candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor, and will make his own candidacy entirely subordinate to that of Colonel Markham. Southern California, although it has two transcontinental systems and numerous local railroads, being in fact further along in railway development than any other section of the State, has not had, we believe, a Railroad Commissioner since General Stoneman's incumbency more than ten years ago.
Prof. Ethelbert Dowlen, the expert vigneron, appointed by J. de Barth Shorb, one of the viticultural commissioners, to investigate the history and causes of the vine disease in California, has submitted his report to the commissioners. The Professor among other things says:
Last September I sent out 500 circulars in the name of the commissioners, asking for information in regard to the disease in the various districts affected. To these I received 101 answers from 36 localities, and referring to 46 varieties of grapes.
The disease first became prominent at Anaheim in 1884, and spread from there to Los Angeles, and then north and east during 1883, 1886 and 1887. In 1889 it took a jump and appeared around San Diego. In 1887 and 1889 it appeared in far north as Napa, but did no damage. The first varieties to suffer were the Mission and Muscat, next the Burger, Mataro and Troussenan. The Garignan and Grenade suffered slightly, the Bruno Alba scarously at all, while the Lenoir, Gamay, Tunturia and Fulla Blanche entirely escaped.
Neither irrigation, time, pruning or climate seemed to make any difference to the disease, but that is now disproved by the experience of the winter just past, which was as it was, leaves the vines in excellent condition. The disease first manifests itself in the leaves. Yellow spots appear and spread until the entire leaf becomes yellow and readily approved.
The reports of the different officers of the company were received and placed on file. The Secretary was instructed to secure the right of way through Mrs. Stradthoff's land in Fullerton for an irrigation ditch for the Fullerton Land and Trust Company.
The resignation of President Korn was received and accepted.

We are prone to believe that the millennium is near at hand and exhort our brethren of the press to refrain from further bodily appropriation of items from the California Fruit-Grower. We further exhort them to let up on the record of shady political aspirations and turn their eyes toward the light of truthfulness. The Anarkim Gazette of June 19th says:
"When the orange orchards planted in the Northern Citrus Belt come into bearing, they will cut a figure in the State's Eastern shipments."
Let us grasp your hand, Brother Gazette! You have a pure and unbiased soul. Let the good work of conversion go merrily on!

The vines everywhere in this section are splendid health. They are thrifty and are fairly loaded down with fruit. The malero appears to have disappeared altogether. We commend this fact to the attention of the State Viticultural Commission, who had the supreme gall to dub the pest the "Anahaim vine disease." The vines around Anaheim and in Orange county generally never looked healthier than now.

"Some years ago, after a severe attack brain fever, my hair all came out. I much preparations for restoring it as my sickness ordered, but failed to produce growth of hair. I then tried, success several articles recommended by drug and all alike fell short of accomplishment. The last remedy I am was Ayer's Hair Vigor, which brought growth of hair in a few weeks. I used eight bottles in two years; more was necessary as a restorative, but I ill as a dressing, and have continued to do that purpose. I believe Ayer's Vigor possesses virtues far above the any similar preparation now on the market—Vincent Jones, Richmond, Ind.

The student recognizes his own unsuccessful efforts and those of his predecessors as guides upon the road to final success. Failure moderates our anticipation, cools our ambition for wealth, turns the mind into new channels and renews our determinations. It is the crucible that separates the good from the dross; though a dear teacher its lessons are finally impressed. Failure may be directly a benefit to us if the object we strive for would not redound to our credit. If the Confederate States had succeeded in gaining their independence the power and glory of our nation would have been that of a divided and not of a united country, and slavery would have been fastened indefinitely upon it. In all contests for power there must be a failure on one side that the other may succeed; thus failure is a counterpart to success. If success attended all our efforts, our wants would soon be supplied and we would therefore become indolent, declining in energy and civilization. But while failure exasperates, it also invigorates us. The lessons of failure are many and varied and while we give heed to them we are loath to give them the importance they deserve. We are more inclined to ascribe our success to our own abilities than to the lessons of failure that we have noted in others. Perhaps the best lessons are those in which vice and crime bring not the happiness anticipated. All crime is perpetrated in the belief that a benefit will accrue to the criminal, but the invariable failure sets before the public the vanity of such acts and teaches us more strongly than words can depict the uselessness of crime and vice. Fortunately those lessons are heeded by the great mass of humanity and hence the small proportion of criminals. These facts are becoming better known every year and so we may hope for still further advancement in morals. That wealth does not bring the happiness sought for is due no doubt to the failure of the wealthy to make such application of it as will benefit their fellow-men. Our happiness consists largely in making others happy. Wealth has the power to do this, but how many hold to their sordid gains until death looses their grasp and closes their selfish and unhappy career! Who has wept for the miser, or who has mourned for the avaricious? In reading the lives of great men the fact is forcefully impressed on us that each failure was an incentive and a stepping stone to higher achievements; perhaps they attained greater eminence than they ever dreamed of simply by learning from failure. Men of high position learned to conquer adverse circumstances and derived from defeat a determination to succeed. And we are shown by their acts that work and honest endeavor is the only sure foundation. There are few inventors that have not bad failures in their undertakings; these have led them to great and grand results. Robert Fulton profiled by the failures of Wm. Henry, John Fitch, Samuel Moray and others. Although his first boat sank to the bottom of the Seine, his final success on the Hudson revealed to the world a new mode of navigation. It is said of Benjamin F. Butler, one of our greatest lawyers and orators, that his first attempt to speak in public was a complete failure, being unable to utter a sentence, but this gave him a determination to succeed. His practice is now before the Supreme Court and his fees are one hundred thousand dollars a year. Columbus, failing to find a western passage to India, discovered a new world. Many more instances might be cited more striking than those in which failure has taught its lessons. It would seem, therefore, that failure, instead of being our enemy, is our friend, and its lessons—disagreeable, distressing and even disastrous—are yet a final benefit. Like the secretes training at our military school of War.

"My adopted boy, aged 12 years, suffered terribly from scrofaalza on his leg, which spread till they at one time formed one great sore from the calf of his leg up to his thigh, partially covered with sand, and discharging matter continually. The muscles became contracted so that his leg was drawn up and he could hardly walk. We tried everything we could hear of, without success, until we began giving him Hood's Saraparilla. In just a month, after he had taken two-thirds of a hothole, the sore entirely healed, his leg is perfectly straight, and he can Walk as Well as Ever.
Hood's Saraparilla is the best medicine I ever knew for scarfulza human. It has done its work more than satisfactorily." WILLIAM SARAPARILLA, HONDAHLA, Milton County, Texas.
