The New Chronicle building. The new Chronicle building, located at the intersection of Market, Kearny and Geary streets in San Francisco, one of the largest and most complete structures on the Coast, was thrown open to public inspection Monday evening of last week. It has been under construction for over a year past and its builder, M. H. deYoung, proprietor of the Chronicle, has spent about $1,000,000 upon the edifice. It is ten stories high and has a frontage of ninety-three feet on Market and Geary streets and generally speaking it is built in the Romanesque style, though no particular order of architecture has been followed throughout. The building is 130 feet high and is surmounted by a tower of 67 feet in height, making a total of 212 feet from the sidewalk to the top of the edifice. It is one of the strongest structures on the coast, the interior frame work being of heavy steel; the walls are of dark brown sandstone and red pressed brick with terra cotta trimmings, which gives the building a handsome appearance. In the tower is a mammoth clock raising four dials, each sixteen feet in diameter. One of the features of the interior finish of the new structure is the marble work, which is of pure white Italian stone. Two foot passenger elevators and one freight lift, together with pneumatic tubes, mail chutes and other conveniences are provided. New presses will turn out the papers from eight to twenty-four pages at the rate of 40,000 an hour. Brilliant fireworks and the finest electrical illuminations ever witnessed on the coast were displayed from the roof and sides of the building Monday night. Great crowds of people filled the street on all sides of the building and gave repeated cheers. The proprietor had sent out several thousand invitations to friends and patrons of the paper who inspected the new and complete mechanical plant, the business office and apersonal editorial, comprising stereotyping and art rooms. The first paper, which will be a large edition, will be printed in the new building next Saturday. Tammouth Houses The people of Petaluma were much excited, lately, over the building of some man-made bones of some extinct animal, on the ramps of Andy Ducker, located in the football field (far from the old Vallejo adobe). What appears to be a lower jaw is about two feet in length, and has two large molars, the canals of which is almost perfect. One of these teeth weighs two pounds nine and a half ounces, and the other one pound and ten ounces. The jaw bone is now a complete petrification. Accompanying this was a portion of a horn or tusk over two feet in length, and about two inches in its largest diameter. This was smooth and glossy on the outside, but chalky, and was much shattered by the time it reached town. Subsequently Mr. Ducker brought to town the MIRCILLARIES The story is told of a German, who took the hands of his clock to the maker to have them fixed, because they did not keep proper time. Of course, the clock-maker demanded the works, as in them lay the trouble. Bolls and blotches, pimples and other eruptions on the exterior toll of a disordered condition of the blood within. If you have these indications, be wise in time, and take Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. It puts the liver and kidneys in good working order, purifies the blood, cleanses the system from all impurities, from whatever cause arriving, and tones up the functions generally. "Golden Medical Discovery" checks the frightful intrusions of Scrofaula, and if taken in time, arrests the march of Consumption of the Lung (which is Lung-acrofaula), purifies and enriches the blood, thereby curing all Skin and Body Diseases. The estimates of population by the new census range from 63,000,000 to 67,000,000. The population of the United States in 1870 was 38,553,983. In 1880 it was 50,155,783. Berlin in 1868 spent $275,000 on its street cleaning. In 1887 Philadelphia spent $314,672. New York's taxable wealth is put at $2,000,000. The city property is estimated at $300,000,000. An ordinary Police Court Recorder in New York gets $12,000 salary. The Governor of the State gets $10,000. There are 2,700 courts in the United States engaged in granting divorces, and one marriage in every twenty eight is thus annulled. It is beyond question that narcotics are a more prolific source of insanity than all other causes combined. Contracts made by telephone are as binding as though made on paper, the only difficulty being to identify the contracting parties. The population of Africa is now estimated at 325,000,000. The area is three times that of Europe, the population being about equal. Quill toothpicks, as a rule, are imported from France.
