The Gratz private asylum will soon deserve the name of "Rendezvous des Princes at des Princesses," says Mrs. Crawford in the London Truth. Poor Prince Pedro of Saxe-Coburg has just been sent there from Cannes. His mania was the fear of poison. He thought the Republics and the D'Eudata were equally anxious to cut him off. Prince Charles of Lichtenstein will meet him probably in a few days.
The Duchess d'Aleneon was at this asylum, of which I hear, Adelaide of Hohenlohe, Duchess of Augatenburg, is still an inmate. She went out of her mind through brooding over her disappointments, which have remained ever present to her mind. One was the failure of her husband to obtain the Danish duchesse; another was the marriage of her wealthy uncle, Frederick, the only rich member of the family, to Mary Lee, and the third was having missed the imperial crown of France.
She does not realize the compensations one of which is the rise of her daughter Augusta to the imperial German throne, and the other the match between his sister-in-law Caroline Matilda, and the wealthiest of the Hohenzollerns, Prince Frederick Leopold, brother of the Duchess of Connaught, Princess Amelia of Bavaria, nee Borbon y Barron, is also at this Rendezvous.
Prince Charles Lichtenstein was driven out of his mind by the disappointment in recent meeting in real life the woman that he dreamt of. He was not exactly a Lovelace, but he had a passion for white blackbirds, and sought for them industriously among black blackbirds, who plucked him unmercifully.
Grades for Fruit
The Santa Clara valley horticulturists have adopted a sensible plan by which uniformity of product will in a great measure be secured. They have decided that prunes, peaches and apricots shall be graded as follows:
Prunes: Twenty to the pound and larger to be considered standard No. 1; all above twenty and not more than thirty to the pound; standard No. 2 all over thirty to the pound; standard No. 3 All prunes must be in good condition.
Peaches measuring 2 inches in diameter to be considered standard No. 1; those meas-

Peaches measuring 2 inches in diameter to be considered standard No. 1; those measuring less than 2 inches down to 1 inch to be considered standard No. 2. All poaches must be in good condition.
Apricots not exceeding nine to the pound to be considered standard No. 1; those in excess of nine but not exceeding thirteen to the pound to be considered standard No. 2. All apricots to be in good condition.
The fact that a step of this kind was necessary has long been recognized. The time has passed when fruit of all sizes could be dried and pitted in together and sold for a good price as that which had been carefully graded, and the example thus set is one that should be followed all over the State.
A Remarkable Men
A lady resident of our town prides herself on the fine breeds of poultry which she possesses, and she takes a great deal of pleasure in caring for and rearing a large number of chicks every year, and is now perfectly elated over a phenomenal hen which she raised an equal of which perhaps was never known. The hen, when quite young, began laying, and when her nest was ample with some twelve or fifteen eggs, she began to exhibit signs of a desire to sit. Her mastress gave her fall away, and was astonished to observe that every day at a certain hour the noble bird would leave her sit trog and lay an egg in another nest near by. And although her chicks have now been hatched about two weeks the mother hen has not failed to deposit her egg every day, and at the same time taking excellent care of her babies. Sutter Independent.
To Give the Sack.
Two noblemen in the reign of Maximilian H. (1564-1579) one a German, the other a Spaniard, who had each rendered a great service to the emperor, asked the hand of his daughter, Helena, in marriage. Maximilian said that as he estimated them both alike it was impossible to choose between them, and therefore their own prowess must decide it, but being unwilling to risk the loss of either by engaging them in deadly combat he ordered a large sack to be brought and declared that he who should put his rival into it should have his fair Helena.
And this whimsical combat was actually performed in the presence of the imperial court and hastened an hour. The unhappy Spanish nobleman was first overcome and the German successor in enveloping him in the sack, took him upon his back and laid him at the emperor's feet.
This humoral combat is said to be the origin of the phrase "give him the sack," so common in the literature of courting—American Notes and Queries.

House Renting in Madrid.
I should not forbear, as I went along, inquiring the rent of one of these fine houses in Madrid, for I may here explain that this whole journey was in good part a house hunting trip. A house with sunshine and plenty of it, a good deal of garden, at a low price, and in a particularly agreeable climate—such was the desideratum pursued through southern France, Algerna and Spain. And I am happy to say I found it, though these conditions were by no means to be met with Madrid. I asked the price of an apartment billed for rent in one of the best houses. It proved to consist of eleven rooms on the third story, which, as the tall ground floor story and an attested are not counted, was equivalent to a fifth or sixth, and there was an ascensor—an elevator. The price was 12,000 reales. How magnificent to think of living in an apartment at 12,000 reales per annum. Yet, since the real is but five cents, twenty therefore to the dollar, it is but $000, after all. — William Henry Bishop in Scribner.
Customs of the Esquimaux.
Like the Indians, the Esquimaux often kill the old. Often the old are tired of life and beg to be dispatched. If food is scarce they are turned out to starve, whether they like it or not. The superfluous women are also disposed of in this way. Barbarism shows itself in their treatment of the dead. The body of a favorite wife or child is sometimes protected through the winter and decently buried in the spring, but as a general rule corpses are dragged a short distance from the village and abandoned to the dogs.
The savages have no idea of the marriage relation. Women are treated as chattails. The number of wives a man may have is regulated not by his possessions, as among our Mormons, but by his ability to manage women. One infers from this that polygamy is not carried on to any great extent. — Great Divide.
As early as the end of the Sixteenth century the walnut was common in the fields by the English highways and in orchards near London. It is not, of course, a native of Britain, having most probably been brought from the Caucasus by way of Italy, where it must have been grown as an early data, since Varro, writing nearly a century before the Christian era, mentions it as then a familiar tree.
