Noted Men Who Were Maleful
A writer in a Boston paper declares that he knows it for a fact that the Hon. Caleb Cushing, who, with the exception of the Hon. Rufus Choate, was the best man to sit and listen to him ever, been acquainted with, was substantially dumb in the society of women. He either did not know how to talk to them, or he would not, and he could scarcely look in the face of one of them without blushing. He could not look them fairly in the eyes, in fact, nor could he men either, for that matter. There seemed to be an unaccountable timidity and shrinking about him, as there was even about Choate himself, great man as he was.
And the writer would remark, in passing, that he remembers, as to the latter, that one evening at one of the large hotels in Boston there was a reunion, for some purpose, of the graduates of Harvard College in and about Boston, and Choate was one of the invited guests. The late brilliant Joan Droney Jr. (as he was then) presented at the table with his usual intimate grace and propriety. While the company were attending the writer then a very young man was standing by himself in a corner, when Choate came in, with a slim gait and head down looking has confused as a schoolboy, and watching a glimpse of the writer, he rushed eagerly toward him, and grasping his arm and subtanently. "You must help me up to the committee," who were standing in the hall proceeding the greatest.
We had only allowed a few steps, however when Choate being disheveled was paused rather than bother by hands of hands, and the writer was left again to continue with something and with others like him, and of his own age also happened to be standing near, not however before he had centered himself to marrow his nose now surprised us that a man of no experience and disinterested should be at all disposed of their walking mother as we went.
And I have stated in a previous paper now he always looked possible the eyes of someone he preferred to walk through books and narrowest rather than through the most crowded streets. He was very peculiar in this particular.
I have met from authority which cannot be questioned that Mr. Cushing once, at an event party in Newburyport, attempting to make himself agreeable, it is to be presumed, unable to a pretty, brighty eyed girl of seventeen or eighteen years old, and quoting insinuations on her beauty and accomplishments in the circle of her young admirers. Day after day she told me how have begun.
And she instantly replied, with a neat hairstyle and a smile: "Why, with all of you? thus discrediting the distinguished scholar and statesman and getting the laugh of the bystanders upon him.
Mow Randall served Grant.
It was while almost exhausted physically from a three-day strut that Mr. Randall cultivated and has been irrigated to death, and we venture to say that the roots of the trees and vines are deep in the ground and not "skin deep" under thе skinface. — Tulare Register.

Mow Randall Served Grant.
It was while almost exhausted physically from a three days' strain that Mr. Randall, by a heroic assertion of leadership, put the bill placing federal grant on the retired hat of the army through the House in the last hour of forty-eight Congress. He had been without sleep for thirty six hours, attending conference meetings and keeping an eye at the same time on the attention in the House. The way seemed hopeless to him. Nothing could be done except by unanimous consent, and there was opposition to the treaty with both sides of the chamber. Mr. Randall was an earnest advocate of the magazine, however, and was determined to pay it through.

What irrigation will Do?
The experience of J. M. Alexander's orchard, just west of town, goes to show what continued irrigation will do for a country after a time. This orchard has been irrigated but two or three times since it was set out five or six years ago, and yet moisture is so close to the surface that the matter of drainage is presenting itself for consideration.
There is no hard pan to keep the moisture from going down if it wants to, but it does not want to. It wants to come up, and the only way to keep it from coming out of the ground and going off into the air is to cultivate. This orchard has been
