Religious observance
Following is a paper read by T. J. House of Buena Park before the literary society of that place at its meeting last week:
"Almighty God hath created the mind free; all attempts to influence it by temporal punishments or burdens, or by civil incapacitations tend only to beget halits of hypoerisy and meanness, and are a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, who, being Lord both of body and mind, yet chose not to propagate it by conversation on either, as it was his almighty power to do. To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions, which he does not believe, is both tyrannical and sinful. Be it therefore enacted by the General Assembly that no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship place or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained or burdened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief, but that all men shall be free to profess and by argument to maintain their opinions in matters of religion, and that the same shall in law be criminal, on large or affect their civil capacities. We are free to declare that rights here by asserted, are the natural rights of mankind and that any act shall be hereafter passed to repeal this present, or narrow its operation, such act will be an infringement of natural rights. Thomas Jefferson in General Assembly of Virginia, 1753.
I have given you this quotation to show you what this great statesman and signer of the declaration of Independence thought of religious legislation, but I wish it understood at the outset that I have nothing to say against any man's religion, so long as does not interfere with the rights of others. Neither name I any opinion to any one feeling granted the privilege and protection in the right to keep the first day of the week as the Sabbath; instead of the second as was originally commanded, or of keeping the whole of the old Jewish law as to that, but what I do object to is the making of any law to force anyone to adopt the religious opinions or practices of others when they do not believe in it. It Christians have the right to compel people to act as though they were Christians, simply because they have the majority, have not inhibited past actions right to compel Christians to act as though they were inhibited if they had the power? When we try to compel our deeds or seventh day advent brethren to keep a day that they are fully satisfied is not the day that was commanded to be kept, are we living up to the golden rule, and doing to others as we would have others do to us? We are told by the National reformers that they do not wish to enforce the observance of the day as a religious, but as a civil institution, when everybody knows that, were it not for the sadness they attach to the day, as a religious duty, they would not care whether any one kept it or not; if it is as some of them clauses themselves and they
Christians, simply because they have the majority, have not in the past been right to compel Christians to act as though they were indisposed if they had the power? When we try to compel our Jewish or seventh-day Advent brethren to keep a day that they are fully satisfied in not the day that was commanded to be kept, are we living up to the golden rule, and doing to others as we would have others do to us? We are told by the National reformers that they do not wish to enforce the observance of the day as a religious, but as a civil institution, when everybody knows that, write it not for the sacriestness they attach to the day, as a religious duty, they would not care whether any one kept it or not; or if it is as some of them claim a physical necessity and they want to compel men to rest whether they want to or not, why don't they claim for a law to compel men to sleep six hours of the twenty-four which is much of a physical necessity as one day is spent seven. Any good physician will tell us that the man who works seven days in the work and taught ten hours sleep other things being paid will live longer and enjoy better health than the one who works only six days and spends half the nights in the ballroom, or other places of amusement; but no, none of these good Christians whose consciences are so tolerant they cannot meet and worship God on Sunday unless they can compel others to do the same, can spend half all the night in the ballroom without any compensation of conscience whatsoever, which is more injurious to health than any ordinary labor would be all seven days of the week. The sabbath is a religious institution and its observance an act of worship, its legal enforcement is therefore the legal entitlement of religion and that is foreign alike to the spirit of real Christianity and to our five institutions in the language of one of the temples of our American constitution. In all matters of religion man is responsible alone to his tool and when the State attempts to interfere in any way in such matters it serves the place and prerogative so full. Past history proves conclusively that any interference in religious matters by civil government, proved a curse, and the most desecrated or priestly rule has always been the most tyrannical and oppressive rule the world was ever caused with and when I speak of the priesthood I do not mean the Roman priesthood alone but Protestant as well. I have post been reading in church history an account of the persecution of the Baptist by the Pedro Bapists in early times in America, not only in the New England States but also Virginia where Patrick Henry rose some forty miles to defend three Baptist ministers who had been arrested and wore on trial for preaching the gospel contrary to the law, and we find most, it not all, persecution for conscience sake has been done by religious partners. This may seem strange difference to come from a church member but truth and honesty compels the admission. Is history repeating itself and are we to have the persecution and oppression of the dark ages re enacted upon our free American soil or the old blue laws of Connecticut once more in operation? From the period when our faith is framed the American Constitution which gives to all civil and religious liberty liberty to worship God according to their conception of heaven's revealed will, from that moment despism was crushed, her letters of darkness were broken and heaven desired that man should be free, and the natural and unholy alliance of ecclesiastical and civil power was severed, but the American people have been free too long to remain in physical or mental slavery; they may be deceived into giving up their rights for a time, but it they do the reaction will as surely come as the Citizen—So you think of locating here?
Physician—Yes. I thought some of practicing among you.
Citizen—See here, young man, there's a good opening here for a man as understands his biz, but we don't want no practicing, or experimenting—doctoring's what we want!
Many times women call on their family physicians; suffering, as they imagine, one from dyspepsia another from heart disease, another from liver or kidney disease, another from nervous exhaustion or prostration, another with pain there or there, and in this way they all present, alike to themselves and their easy-going and indifferent overburden doctor, separate and distinct disease. For which he prescribes his pills and potions, as them to be such, when, in reality, they only symptoms caused by some womb The physician, ignorant of the cause encourages his "practice" until made. The suffering patient not probably worse by reason strong treatment and consequence A proper medicine, like Prescription directed to have entirely removed the impelling all those distresses and instituting comfort in prolonged misery.
