THE WHISPERING LUTE. O'er David's couns, as old tradition says, Three hung a late tuned over to God's praise. And when, upon the panning of the night, The soft wind whispered toward the gates at night. The late filled all the chamber of the king With its melodious murmuring. Then woke the royal singer, and with head Half mind, as if he heard an angel's trend, Listened, until his post neal on fire. He caught with sugar, yearning hands the lyra, And sang the songs the world's heart sing again— Inspired outpourings of the souls of men. So, o'er our heads, new dawning truth abroad, The whispering lute sing sweeter thoughts of God! O post, whom the world has walked long. Come, smile the mournring harp strings close and strong! Come, thou new meer, who shalt rise and sing This day's evangel of thy God and King: —James Bachman in Harper's Weekly. Are Stones Alive? A few weeks ago The Saturday Republic gave the results of some startling experiments by Mr. Mason Klune, of California, in which that gentleman laid claim to having discovered sex in mineral atoms. From the following it will be seen that E. D. Walker, the scientist and writer, anticipated the Pacific slope philosopher by about two years. The extract given below is from an article by Mr. Walker written in 1867: "We generally think of minerals as dead lumps of inactive matter. But they may truthfully be said to be alive, creatures of vital pulsations and separated into individuals as distinct as the plains in a forest or tigers in a jungle. The dispositions of crystals are as diverse as those of animals. They throb with unseen currents of energy. They grow in size as long as they have opportunity. They can be killed, too, though not as easily as an oak or a dog. "A strong electric current discharged through a crystal will decompose it very rapidly if it be of soft structure, causing the particles to gradually disintegrate in the reverse order to its growth, until the poor thing has a dead, shapeless ruin. It is true the crystal's life is unlike that of higher creatures. But the difference between vegetable and animal life is no greater than that between mineral and vegetable life. Linnaeus, the great Swedish naturalist, defined the three great kingdoms by saying: 'Stone grow, plants grow and feel, animals grow and feel and move.'" While Walker mentions nothing of sex in stones, it is plain that his ideas respect them were identical with the wonderful truths Mr. Klune thinks he has demonstrated in his microscopical researches — St. Louis Republic. An Expensive Entertainment. The most notable entertainment without exception, ever given at the executive manSION where refreshments were served was that to the diplomatic corps in February, 1861, at the close of the Hayes administration. MINCELLAREDS. $500 Reward So confident are the manufacturers of Dr. Bager's lazarh Remedy in their ability to cure Chronic Catarrh in the Head, so matter how bad or of how long standing, that they offer in good faith, the above reward, for a case which they cannot cure. SYMPTOMS OF CATARRH. Headache, obstruction of nose, discharm falling into throat, sometimes profuse, wanry, and sord, at others thick, tenseous, monotonous, purulent, bloody and puffy; eyes weak, riling in ears, defacex, difficulty of closing throat, expectoration of offensive matter; breath offensive; smell and taste impaired; and general debility. Only a few of these symptoms likely to be present at once. Thousands of cases result in consumption, and none in the grave. By its mild, soothing, antiseptic cleansing and healing properties, Dr. Bager's Remedy cures the worst case. "Cold in the Midea" is curred with a few applications. Catarrhal Mascade is relieved and cured if by magic. It removes offensive breath, nose or impairment of the sense of touch, smell or hearing; restoring or weak eyes, and impaired memory; when by the violence of Catarrh, as they all frequently are. An Expensive Entertainment. The most notable entertainment, without exception, ever given at the executive mansion where refreshments were served was that to the diplomatic corps in February, 1861, at the close of the Hayes administration. There had passed before the president and Mrs. Hayes 7,000 persons by actual count. Of this number 4,500 partook of the lavish refreshments served. There were two large wine barrels of terrapin prepared and served. Over 1,500 leaves of bread and 150 hams were made into sandwiches. There were nearly 1,000 quarts of cream furnished. Nearly 400 chickens were used in salads. Over 150 gallons of coffee and great tanks of lemonade were consumed. There were cakes and confections without stink. The steward of the household, W. T. Crump, who managed this enormous gastronomic campaign, had a small army of men and women in the kitchen. A supply of 2,500 clean plates was kept constantly on hand and required ten dish washers. There were seven cooks in the kitchen and fifty waiters employed in serving the guests. The actual cost of this single entertainment was $6,000, although no wines were served, which was more than has ever been expended by any president for state dinners during a whole administration. The jam was unparalleled, owing to senators and others abusing the executive hospitality by bringing as many as ten ladies on the carl designed only to include the ladies of their families.—Washington Star. A Dog's Murderous Revenge. A correspondent of The London Field relates the following instance of canine retribution which came under his notice: Two shepherds on the North Derbyshire moors, living in adjoining cottages far removed from any other dwelling, had each a dog of the cur breed that were sisters. One of these gave birth a few weeks ago to a litter of five whelps, and all seemed to go well with them until the 28th of last month. On that day, in the early morning, the mother of the pups was in the yard eating her breakfast when the sister appeared on the scene. An attempt was made by the intruder to share the meal. This was resented by a snarl and a growl, which failed to drive off the hungry sister, and again she emailed to appease her appetite, when she was fiercely attacked and severely mauled, and went limping away howling with pain. About an hour after this incident, the owner of the cur with a family went on his round of inspection, taking his dog along with him. Their departure would appear to have been noticed by the vanquished sister, for about an hour afterwards she stealthily made her way to the stable, wherein were the whelps before named, and worried them all. Having accomplished this terrible revenge, she proceeded to carry off her victims to a place of concealment, but was caught in the act by one of the sheepard's children. A Humane Age. A commercial and manufacturing age is not necessarily one of greed and selfishness. This is pre-eminently such an epoch and the "finer humanities" have more practical recognition now than in former periods of the world's history. Philanthropic enterprises as well as philanthropic societies abound. The condition of the destitute poor excites more notice than formerly. The reform of prisons, their discipline and their sanitary aspects is getting to be general. The mitigation of the rigors of criminal codes is a feature of the times. The nearly complete sweeping away of the disabilities of women is significant. The laws for the protection of minors are the same line. War is being measurably relieved from its barbarities. Institutions of exceptional iniquity are disappearing. School room abuses are getting rarer. The public will not tolerate outrages on the insane and on paupers under public care. Provisions for safety at sea are multiplying and the time is at hand when fire escapes in exposed buildings will be compulsory. All around there is evidence of a keen and effective recognition of the claims of humanity, and it is a pleasure to note it.—Pittsburg Chronicle-Telegraph. He Will Never Know. A Hoosler named Davis made a bet of $5 with a friend named Beaudry that he could stay on the track in front of an approaching locomotive five seconds the longer. He was picked up, flung thirty feet high, and when he came down was a mass of broken bones and pulp. He will never know what his record was.—Detroit Free Press. Bucklen's Aranes Salve.
