THE OLD GATE.
I open the way to the meadow grass,
Where brilliant flowers are born,
And the bittering cattle slowly pass,
At seventide or morn.
In summer days the children come,
To march for berries there.
The bee go by with a droning hum,
And the butterflies are fair.
The wild turtles pause while to rest,
And sing their sweetest song.
The moon hangs false in the distant west,
And the twilight smiles grow long.
I open the way to the meadow grass
Alike in sun or shower,
The bittering cattle slowly pass,
As morn or evening hour.
J. B. M. Wright in Good Housekeeping.
Lace, Real and Otherwise.
You hear very much about the priceless lace used on women's dresses, and of the magnificence of this delicate fabric that is placed on alleged splendid trousers. About the splendor of the other material I cannot say, but about the value of the lace. I can assert that there is much of the fairy story about it. The best known lace buyer in this town, who has had charge of the lace department for years in one of the largest dry goods houses, told me the other day that they had not one yard of real lace in their whole store. This seems a sweeping assertion, but it is nevertheless a true one. The particular firm for which he bought last $2,000 a year or so ago in buying real lace, which had absolutely no sale in this city; and, for this reason, they resolved not to buy any in the future. No one misses it, as there is no call for the genuine article whatever. Like real diamonds, real lace is seldom now seen on any one, but it is particularly so in the latter case. Interview in St. Louis Globe-Democrat.
Father Tom.
What gave Burke his peculiar charm, especially with the audiences that thronged to bear him, both in this country and in America, was his marvelous dramatic power. When in Rome his Lenten discourses were attended by strangers who could not understand a single word of English, but who were impressed, nevertheless, by his wonderful action, or, rather, acting, in the sense of the word used by Demosthenes. He was such a master of this difficult art that on one occasion, in the midst of friends, he undertook to preach a sensational sermon without uttering a word. His face, expressive of suitable emotions, added by the movement of his eyes, at one moment darkened by furrowed lines, the next instant seemed lit up with seraphic beauty. His imposing attitudes and gestures defied description. One unspoken sentiment was strengthened by pointing tragically down, another by outstretched hands and eyes raised to heaven.—Temple Bar.
The "Corsican Brothers."
The romantic drama of the "Corsican Brothers" was supported by the Housekeeping Journal.
MISCELLANEOUS.
(A is Herman and Juliet.)
A prominent physician calls the kiss "an elegant discriminator of diseases." He says, "I fever is spread by it, so are king diarrhea." Out upon the gracious and majestic vagina I Evidently kisses are not for such as he and the old fox says the grapes are sour. Let him devote himself to making our women healthy and blooming that kisses may be kisses. This can surely be done by the use of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription, which is simply magical in curing diseases peculiar to females. After taking it for a reasonable length of time there will be no more irregularity, hardness, bearing-down mountains, nervous protrusion, general debility and kindled aliments. It is the only medicine for women sold by druggists in persuasive guarantees from the manufacturers; that it will give infliction in every case on money without harm.

The "Corsican Brothers."
The romantic drama of the "Corsican Brothers" was suggested to the older Alexander Dumas by what Louis Blanc, whose mother was a Corsican, told him of the mysterious spiritual sympathy existing between him and his younger brother Augusta. They were so closely allied in temperament that one had always been able to determine, however widely separated, what had happened to the other. Louis knew, in England, when Augusta was suddenly taken ill in France; Augusta knew in Spain if Louis were in danger in Italy. They had repeated experiences of this sort, and, in every instance, their vivid impression, their innest revelation, flashing through space, was confirmed. The Blances were great admirers of Dumas' play, and frequently went to see it performed.
A Boy With Four Eyes.
Where would Mr. Barnum be if all the world had the same opinions of monstrosities as the Chinese appear to have? A woman in Woo-foh village, Fukien province, recently gave birth to a boy with four eyes. The mother was very much frightened, and wished to have the child killed, but the husband would not allow it to be done. It was finally agreed to exhibit the child for a few days to prevent such an unfortunate affair ever occurring again in the family. The Chinese believe that such deformities are caused by evil spirits. After it had been on view for some time the mother put an end to the child's existence by drowning it in a tub of water.
Scotch Dinners Coating a Cent.
They manage dinners for poor children a trifle more economically in Edinburgh than elsewhere. In Edinburgh it is found possible to supply for a half penny a wholesome meal of vegetable broth and bread. Scotch children thrive on the various savory thick soups of many ingredients for which the cuisine of the country is celebrated, and unfortunately soup of any kind, clear or thick, is rarely prepared in the home of the English poor Solid meat, bread and potatoes form the staple diet. In too many cases in England bones are only regarded as useful to the rag and bone man; in Scotland such waste is rare even among the poorest. Liverpool Courier.
Application of Electric Welding.
Axles, carriages, twisted wire cables, the ends of boilers, wagon tires and hoops for barrels are among the articles for which electric welding is already employed. Bars of metal may be joined at angles, finger rings made, steel joined to iron in tools, rods or bars lengthened or shortened and cast iron pieces for machinery united by the new method. The process is very rapid, and so effective that chain links made by it, unlike those welded in the old way, never break at the weld. A complete revolution in riveting metal plates is anticipated, as the riveting may be done by electricity so as to avoid all leaking. New York Telegram.

An Elephant's Sagacity.
The stories illustrating the sagacity of the elephant are innumerable; but few are more remarkable than the following one recorded by a writer in a Bombay paper upon the authority of an artillery officer, who was a witness of the incident: The battering train was going to the siege of Seringapatam, when an artilleryman, who was seated on the tumbril of one of the guns, by some accident fell almost directly under the blind wheel. The elephant stationed behind the gun, perceiving the man's danger, instantly, without any order from its keeper, lifted up the wheel with its trunk, and kept it suspended till the carriage had passed clear of him.
Gallicians in East Suffolk.
The following Gallicians, surviving in East Suffolk, are worth preserving:
1. Ho-go. Used in relation to fish that is tainted or not quite fresh—baut gout.
2. The smallest pig of a litter is called "the pit man"—petit maid.
3. Larges. The gleaners in a corn field demand largesse of passers by.—Notes and Queries.
Work for Missionaries.
