A TALKER WITH A DRIVANCE. Vigorous Press Agents Several Charing Hammers. Are we to become a nation of questions, and this grand aggregation of states to merge into nothing better than a gigantic speech through the opposition of some people to conversation! "Dear Beaver, don't talk," is but the local application of a general effort to deprive the average citizen of one of his inalienable rights—that of asking questions. Dickens has very beautifully shown up this trait in our national character in his capacity as a caricaturist, and probably the sentiment provoked by this produced the effect to secure national reliance. Silence may be golden, but I am a talker from Talkville, and I prefer the voluminous and pleasant currency of conversation, which is prohibited in whatever direction I turn. Here, for instance, is one of the impediments to speech; in fact, a brake on conversation which is particularly objectionable: DON'T TALK TO THE MAN AT THE WHEEL. This is an outrage. To whom should we apply for reliable information as to the shoals and rapids, the state lines and steam pressure, the beauties of the landscape and the operation of the electric light at the bow, if not to the man at the wheel! He is in the right spot both to see all these first and create upon them from his pleasant little rostrum on the forward deck, and it is an outrage upon the dissemination of useful information to enforce such a gag law. He can better explain the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune which ply from the bows of an Ohio or Mississippi steamer than any man on earth, yet, as a valuable reference, a wooden Indian might as well occupy the position. I want to talk to the man at the wheel, and he must be a stern wheeler indeed who would refuse to listen to me or to satisfy the acquired and burning desire for universal knowledge. Let the spokes of the wheel itself protest against such unwarranted silence. But this is not the only line in which efforts are made to head off conversation. There are others besides packet lines, for example: DON'T SPEAK TO THE ACCOUNTANT WHILE ADDING A COACH OF FIGURES. Now this is a pretty state of affairs. I must stand in mute admiration while some arithmetical crank without any more bowels than a gaspipe is debiting me with a five pound chunk of oleomargarine, which I never received. No, sir; in such a case silence would mean consent, and I propose to enter a vigorous protest both then and there. His columna, indeed! They don't support the state like the columns of a newspaper, and I Now this is a pretty state of affairs. I must stand in mute admiration while some arithmetical crank without any more bowels than a gaspipe is debiting me with a five pound chunk of oleomargarine, which I never received. No, sir; in such a case silence would mean consent, and I propose to enter a vigorous protest both then and there. His columns, indeed! They don't support the state like the columns of a newspaper, and I propose to have an interview with the cashier or accountant as often as prescribed by the city editor, even if the aforesaid experts show sorry figures afterward. Besides if you want a mathematical question answered when is there a better time for having it solved than while the figurer is in full practice! And what is an accountant for if not to give an account of himself, any delay in doing which leaves him open to suspicion. Oh, yes, the accountant who refuses to speak even while adding a column of figures would not answer. Here is another, an attack upon the very vitality of the people: PLEASE DO NOT CONVERSE WITH THE CLERKS WHILE COMPOUNDING PRESCRIPTIONS. Oh, yes, keep quite mum, not knowing whether the above clerk is substituting arsenic or epoxam salts in your prescription. View in silent complacency his placid style of rolling up a nickel's worth of drugs, 3 cents worth of paper, I cent worth of twine and $1 worth of your time, for all of which he charges you 75 cents and keep quiet during the operation. Human nature couldn't stand it, and won't stand it without at least demanding why in thunder he doesn't hurry up, or making some cheerful remark about the number of drug clerks in state prison for making rash experiments on the human system, just to make him feel comfortable. Have sick patients no right? Why, even the doctors force us to show our tongues, and I don't propose that an ordinary drug clerk shall put on any airs over a regularly ordained doctor if I can help it. The only redeeming feature about this notice is the prefix "please." On land, as on water, the same tyranny to passengers is exercised. No sooner had the grip car got its grip upon the streets of our city than in the most rude type imaginable, which would even stare a lady out of countenance, the notice appeared: CONVERSATION WITH THE GRIPMAN IS PROHIBITED. So you are to sit mum, chance and let him carry you six squares beyond your street without telling him you know where to stop. You are to remain under a mistaken impression as to the name of the last boy he killed without getting him as the best authority to set you right. You are to stay in hopeless ignorance as to whether he is a "tripper" or of what pay he gets without a word on the subject, and all because a bloated corporation puts up a job of printing enjoining you to keep silence. This is intolerable. I want to know which is the grip and which is the brake lever, and which is the most liable to break. I want to know the speed of the different cable divisions, and what the effect of a sudden stop would be. I want to know why the air So you are to sit mum, chance and let him carry you six squares beyond your street without telling him you know where to stop. I want to know the speed of the different cable divisions, and what the effect of a sudden stop would be. I want to know why the air line has smoking compartments, and the others have not, and I'll find these things out if the gripman is alive, for I want all of these intruders upon my rights of conversation to show that the western adage is equally applicable to the tongue as to the mill: "Don't monkey with the buzz saw when in moshum."—Pittsburg Dispatch. Passing Around the Horneta. I remember a joke played on Col. Joshua Carpenter, a native of Paris, I think, but then a resident and neighbor of my father in the town of Lincoln. Carpenter had a man at work for him hayling by the name of Parlin. Parlin pitched on and Carpenter laid the loads of hay. One day the man who put up the hay observing a hornet's nest on a bush carefully plugged up the entrance to the nest with hay, cut the bush and rolled the nest up in a bunch of hay. Parlin, separating the bunch to pile on a part as a time, observed the nest, turned the hay back quickly and put the whole bunch up to Carpenter, who in turn uncovered the nest and also drew out the stopper. Observing the nest and the hornet he quickly throw it off the load in the direction of the oxen, who being assaulted by the hornet, started on a run for the barn, overturning the load on the way. Carpenter jumped from the load when they started and landed near the unit, spraining one of his ankles severely and received one of the warmest of receptives from the horneta.—Lawiston Journal.
