The milk and coffee condensing factory at Buena Park is an enterprise of far-reaching importance, and that its success is already assured is not the least pleasing feature connected with it. The condensing process was begun a few days ago, and on Tuesday an inspection of the factory was made by several newspaper representatives of Los Angeles, together with a reporter of the Gazette. When it is known that the factory, once it gets to running at its full capacity, will employ one hundred man or more and use daily twelve tons of milk, the magnitudes of the undertaking becomes apparent, and its success a question of great importance to our valley. The factory is the only one of its kind west of the Missouri river. Its products should therefore find a ready sale throughout the vast Western country. In mining camps and frontier parties, surveying outfits, etc., condensed milk and coffee are indispensable, and in this line the Buena Park company have an almost unlimited field in the West. Another feature of the enterprise is the condensing of morning's milk for the Los Angeles market. Milk will be condensed at the factory in the morning, shipped to Los Angeles in the afternoon and paddled the next morning. This is the manner in which all large Eastern cities are supplied with their milk, the consumers being assured of a pure article when so much chicaneery is practiced by metropolitan milk dealers. Once the factory at Buena Park acquires a reputation for the superiority of its product, its ware will form an important item in the exports from the valley. The works will give employment to upwards of one hundred men, and thus be an important factor not only to the milk producers of the valley and the transportation companies, but to laboring men as well. The Park has, through its energetic founder, Mr. Whitaker, done extremely well to secure such a valuable enterprise to locate in its midst.

NEWS IN BRIEF.

A. A. Montana, ex-county Treasurer of Los Angeles, who was on trial charged with embezzling county funds, was discharged last week.
The citizens of Monrovia will vote on April 26th upon the question of limiting $40,000 in bonds for the improvement of their water supply.
A firm of architects in Chicago proposes for the World' Fair an immense structure of iron and glass, shaped like a test and covering 194 acres. This would be the largest building ever erected, and would hold the entire exposition, with room to spare.
The dynamite guns of the Vasaviva have been successfully tested for range with service charges, but no attempt was made to demonstrate accuracy. The accuracy of the gun has been shown by shots from one mounted on shore, which showed the value of the weapon itself, but its work on a floating, rolling and pitching platform like the Vasaviva has not yet been proved. An outsider would naturally ask why range and accuracy were not tested at the same time.
Five thousand Italian have embarked for America during the past three weeks. The title of emigration is not due to any illusions as to America being an Elderade; for the true situation of laboring classes in the new world is better understood now than formerly, but the condition of the Italian peninsula is simply unbearable, and the emigrants act on the theory that, no matter what happens, they can be no worse off anywhere than they were at home.
Richard Gird states that the matter of the erection of a sugar refinery on the Chino ranch is being steadily pushed and the prospects are that one will soon go up. Eastern capitalists have been furnished with a statement of the results recently arrived at from experiments with beets grown on the ranch. The showing made is an admirable one, and demonstrates almost beyond question that sugar can be profitably and successfully refined from the beets raised on the ranch.
The resignation of Prince Bismarck, which was received at first with general complacency and without much care one way or the other, is now arousing considerable fear, which increases as the full significance of his act becomes understood. DISTRICT ATTORNEY EDWARDS avers that the petition recently presented to the Supervisors, asking them to rescind their action in creating the new offices, was not prompted in the interest of economy, but to "create a false impression and to gain some political advantage in the next election." Mr. Edwards should say where the false impression comes in before any credence will be given his statement that political advantage is the object sought to be attained by the petitioners. Many people over this way think that, if Mr. Edwards cannot attend to the duties of his office without requiring the assistance of a deputy, at $600 a year, he is not the man to hint of political advantages in the future. It would require a great deal of political advantage to reelect Mr. Edwards more probably than it would pay him to look for in this county.
Politics in the county are beginning to assume an interesting shape, and already the names of several gentlemen are being mentioned in connection with some of the more important offices. The woods are full of candidates this year and the average voter would be very much surprised to hear of the names suggested in connection with some of the offices. The Legislative light in those counties which have no hold-over members of the Legislature will be made on a Stanford basis. Orange county comes within this category, and in this particular matter there will probably be a lot of music in the air. Altogether the crop of candidates blossoms out well, but as the days go by, while the rains come and the winds blow, the people will be separating the wheat from the chaff, and the crop is destined to be considerably diminished long before election day.
The editor of the Santa Ana Free Press thrusts his fists against the post and still insists that Governor Waterman did not pay him $500 for his support during the coming State campaign. The denial, it seems to us, is altogether unnecessary. Nobody believes that Waterman would pay our esteemed contemporary that much for his support, anyhow!

The resignation of Prince Bismarck, which was received at first with general complacency and without much care one way or the other, is now arising considerable fear, which increases as the fall significance of his act becomes understood. In other words, a possibility that when the Kaiser takes into his own hands the relations of the German Empire that war will follow with Austria and the East is disturbing the former comparative indifference.
Saturday the San Diego Grand Jury reported some startling indictments. Among these was John R. Aitken, Judge of the Superior Court, on a charge of felony, and D.H. Horne, foreman of the last Grand Jury, on two charges of perjury. Aitkin is charged with falsifying a judgment roll. Another indictment was that of John M. Lucas, a prominent attorney, charging him with embazlement of a client's funds. W.W. Burgess, a prominent citizen and member of the last Grand Jury, was also indicted for perjury. The parties named gave bail in the sum of $3,000. Aitken claims it is a political move.
A crank in Oakland is preaching to crowds of people nightly who are led away by his prophecies that San Francisco, Oakland and other cities are to be destroyed by a tidal wave and by earthquakes on the 14th of April. Several hundred dupes have been induced to sell their property and join the ranks of the crazy fool who imagines that he has been gifted with the spirit of prophecy. He proposes to take his followers to the summit of the Sierra; but in the present condition of affairs on the mountains the poor dupes will not be much better off than if they remain in Oakland and take to boats. It is amazing that in this day and age of enlightenment, people in any considerable number can be found to follow the leadership of men posing as prophets.
Mme. Pommery of champagne fame died at Reima, France, last week. She leaves a fortune estimated at $4,000,000. Mme. Pommery, the grower of Pommery Grand champagne, was about seventy years of age, and up to her death watched over her champagne interests with the greatest care. Her delight was to spend her money in good works, and the city of Reima, where she lived, benefited greatly by her liberality. The Pommery cellars are hawn out of chalk and are made like a subterranean city with streets and squares. Over these cellars Mme. Pommery had built a palace, but she never lived there. She spent her winters in her house at Reima, where Prince Von Hohenlohe took refuge in 1870.
A shooting affray occurred at the Windsor Hotel at Redlands about 6:30 o'clock Monday morning. Several shots were heard and on investigation P.C. McConkey, manager of the hotel, was found in a dying condition in the hallway leading from the office to the lower parlor. He had a frightful wound on the breast, the bullet passed through his body, and as a rifle was found near him, it was supposed he had leaned upon the weapon and discharged it. He lived but a few minutes. Just after his death, the body of E.C. Greasham, foreman of the Citrograph, was found in the parlor. He had a wound under the arm, the bullet having passed through his body. He had a pistol grasped in his hand, and the walls of the parlor were splashed with his blood. A Cornerer's jury commenced an investigation at once.

Sister Rose Gertrude will not get to Molokai after all, though it is no fault of the Hawaiian authorities that she cannot carry out her wish. She is a Dominican, and another order is there ahead of her. Nevertheless she will be able to do much in her new position in the hospital where lepers are received before going to the island. Her opportunities for a scientific investigation of the disease will be equally as good as if she went to the island herself.
Congressman Vandever has introduced a bill in the House to authorize the Agricultural Department to employ specialists for the purpose of investigating the insect and other pests and diseases that assail fruits and vines, and ascertain the remedies. Numerous complaints of the ravages on fruits and vines have been made by citizens of Los Angeles and Orange counties. There is a great need of such an investigation, so as to assist farmers in killing them.
Arthur D. January is dying in the San Quentin Prison and his father, ex-State Treasurer W. D. January, has been pleading with Governor Waterman again to pardon his erring son. While a deputy under his father, who was State Treasurer during Governor Stoneman's administration, young January stole and lost at the gaming table over $40,000, which various County Treasurers had left on special deposit with the State Treasurer. The Legislature subsequently passed a relief bill reimburasing the County Treasurers. January was convicted in Sacramento in April, 1885, and an appeal was taken to the Supreme Court and in September, 1888, he was sentenced to ten months without defiance it. The breakthrough on the first track of the baggage car torre the clothes from the corpse and mutilated the features before the train could be stopped. The man was plainly drunk, and seemed to be about thirty years of age. He had a gold watch and a twenty-dollar gold piece in his pocket, but no papers could be found by which he could be identified.
Dispatches from several points in Indian Territory are to the effect that this has been a very quiet week in the Cherokee strip, the troops finding few settlers to aid. It appears from the reports of the commanding officers in the strip and reliable newspapers that the situation there has been aggravated by the correspondents who were early in the field and the inhabitants of the border towns which would be handled by the rush of settlers into the strip. Reliable reports now are to the effect that a great many of the inhabitants were at these very towns and were born-lot become mother than born-fale settler. Lee Chuck, a Chinese, who was recently convicted of murder in the first degree, for killing a fellow countryman of his in San Francisco four years ago, was sentenced on Tuesday to fifty years imprisonment at San Quentin. Chuck was twice under sentence of death for the crime, but his influence and wealth saved his neck from the gallows. Recently he hosted that he would never hang, and seemed to think he shortly would go free.
Caprivì, the new German Chameller, on entering his office, is reported to have said: "I shall not probably remain long here. It would be impossible for me to marry my honest opinion at the caprice of the Crown." Bismarck has depicted all his stars, gromes and medals but the Golden Fleece and Black Eagle in the Reich bank. "No more uniforms or medals for me," the vetarian said. "You have forced me into retirement where I shall wear a frock coat and only need my iron cross." Bismarck added: "You will never see me in Berlin again."
The steamship City of Peking arrived in San Francisco from China and Japan on Tuesday, bringing advice that on February 27th some fifteen hundred Japanese houses were destroyed by fire in Tokio and seventy-eight partially burned. Two persons were killed and about twenty-five fireman more or less injured. One hundred and thirty-seven houses were burned in the city on the preceding day, and March 8th about eight hundred and sixty were destroyed and several firemen injured. The fires originated accidentally. Several serious encounters between Dutch troops and a party of Chinese is reported, with rather severe loss to the former. A party of Dutch convicts were sent out to clear the jungle, and were fired upon from ambush. A detachment of troops was driven back the next day with nine wounded, and on March 8th Lieutenant Mallor, who went out in command of two companies, was killed, and Captain Van Herst, who succeeded him, was also shot, and seven places, some of which are high grade ore, running all the way from 610 to 610 per cent. Developing work is being pushed forward in a subsidiary memory, and it is stated that there is urgent ready to put in redaction weeks at the minute in poor condition of ore is expanded to justify the end.
Expenses of County Divisions.
The commission on the division of the property of Los Angeles and Orange counties is nearly ready to make its report to the Board of Supervisors of the two counties. The report will probably be submitted early next week. The last serious work done was the announcement of the values of the new Courthouse site and of the old Courthouse site and building. For some time there was a disagreement, the Orange county commission claiming that Los Angeles was setting too low a price on the property, and vice versa. Last Saturday they virtually armed, setting the new Courthouse site at $125,000, and the old Courthouse at $100,000. The balance has had to be struck between figures for the property in the two counties, and it will take some work to sum up, tabulate and deduce the results of the two sets of figures. It is presumed, however, that Orange will owe Los Angeles $30,000.
The Toads and the Elephant Light.
An American lady tells how she was recently waiting in a carriage near an electric lamp which had just been lighted while her friend went to a neighboring shop. In the dry road she saw presently a stir, and looking over the wheels, saw hopping in all directions across and around, toads, aiming for the light. She got out and aimed for the lamp, too. There was a ring of toads underneath it already; waiting for the fall of moths and the insects of night that drop from life destroying flame. It was a curious sight—those creatures squatted in a circle, with upturned heads, waiting for the victims to drop into their months—Montreal Star.

A letter written by a prominent orange-grower at La Grange, Fla., about the effects of frost the past season upon the orange groves, has just been made public. The letter is dated March 20th. This orange cultivator writes that two damaging frosts have occurred, the second being much worse than the first. The old hummock groves look as if fire had been through them. All the trees will lose their leaves. Some of the wood on the old trees is killed. "On some of the trees where I picked a box or more of oranges the bark is split from the top to the bottom. I have bandaged a good many, but do not know how they will come out. All the young trees in a number of orchards are killed outright. Some have been out five years and many were large. I had 700 finely budded nursery trees killed outright last Monday morning. It is estimated the damage to young trees in the State by the frost will amount to $1,000,000. It is not thought old-bearing trees are injured sufficiently to affect next year's crop. But the effect of the frost will be felt in later years when the young trees now killed would have come in bearing. All growing vegetables were killed as far south in the State as Rock Ledge."

A gentler, pessuer and far more effective means exists of arousing the organ when soignant. A resumption by the billary orcan of its secretive function, with the activity attendant upon health, a return to regularity of the bowels, and a renewal of digestion, are the no less happy and certain results of using the Bittern systematically. Its laxative effect is never painful and drenching, its tendency being rather to perpetuate regularity than to produce a copious action Malaria, nervousness, debility, kidney troubles and neuralgia it subdues effectually.
