"The WIND HAS BLAWN MY PLAID AWA'."
"Over the hills, an' far away:
It's over the hills an' far away.
O'er the hills, and o'er the sea.
The wind has blown my plaid free me.
My tarsan pield, my as good sheet,
That bumps me free wind an' went,
An' held me bien takth eight an' day,
Is over the hills an' far away.
There was a wind, it came to me,
Over the south, an' over the sea,
As it has blawn my own an' hay
Over the hills an' far away.
It blew my corn, it blew my gorr,
It neither left me kid nor steer,
An' blew my plaid, my only star,
Over the hills, an' far away.
But though's has left me here indoors,
An' blawn my bonnet off my head,
There's something hid in Highland bran,
It has na blawn my sword away.
Then o'er the hills, an' o'er the dales,
Over all England, an' thro' Wales,
The braidsword yet shall bear the away
Over the hills an' far away."

The Scottish Thistle.
With regard to the circumstances under which the thistle was adopted as its emblem by the Scottish nation, a correspondent of London Notes and Queries relates the following tradition: Queen Scotia had led her troops in a well fought field, and, when the day was won, retired to the rear to rest from her toils. She threw herself upon the ground, where, as ill luck would have it, an obvious thistle had elected to grow at the very spot selected for her repose. Whether the fair Amazon fought in the national costume I know not, but the spines of the offending herb were sufficiently powerful to penetrate the skin in a very painful manner. A proverbial philosopher (not Mr. Tupper, I think) has declared that "he that sitteth on nettles giseth up quickly," and the same remark holds good of thistles. Queen Scotia sprang up and took the thistle up by the roots. She was about to cast it from her with a military but unladylike expression, when it struck her that the prickly plant would henceforth be ever associated in her mind with the glorious victory which she had just gained. Her intention was changed. She placed the thistle in her caque, and it became the badge of her dynasty.
Some Rich Miners.
Senator Hearst, of California, is the best miner in America. He began in the moun tains as a day laborer. Today he is the richest man in the United States. There is not a mining state or territory in which he does not own and work mines. Jim Witchlatch sold his mine near Unionville, Mon., for $1,800, 000, and lost all that money in Wall street. He went back to Leaflville and in six months made $120,000. He lost every cent of this by the failure of Grant & Ward in 1863. He now has a fortune of $150,000. Ten years ago Joe Stanley was prospecting in Gilpin county.

Colo. His wife took in washing while he dug his way through 700 feet of barren rock. He had no money and couldn't hire help. At the end of the 700 feet he struck pay ore, and named it the California mine. A party of Englishman on a tour through the state gave him $1,000,000 cash for it, and have received $3,000,000 in dividends since. Joe is now one of the richest men in Denver, and vice president of the Denver City National bank.
A Young Woman Kills a Bear.
Last Thursday two young ladies of Sacramento, who have been camping in the neighborhood of Bolinas, went on a huckleberry picnic, and were somewhat surprised to encounter a large brown bear engaged in the same line of business. One of the young ladies, who is an expert shot, happened to have a rifle, and though not wishing to rouse any hard feeling, did not propose to have her fun interfered with by man or boast. Therefore, as Bruin seemed disposed to assert a monopoly of the entire huckleberry crop of the district, she quietly but resolutely took the offensive, and sent a bullet through its brain. This is the first bear, we believe, that has ever been killed by a woman in Marion county. The carcass was brought to San Rafael by the Bolinas stage. It was a big, ugly brute, and a look at it was sufficient to arouse admiration for the grit of the two quiet looking ladies that put it to sleep.
A Maid Who Carries the Malla.
Oregon has a woman mail carrier. Her name is Miss Minnie Westman, and she carries Uncle Sam's mail from the head of navigation on Siuslaw river over the Coast Range mountains, following up the river to Hales postoffice station, within fifteen miles of Eugene City. Her route is twenty miles long, and is situated right in the heart of the mountains. She rides horseback and carries a trusty revolver. Miss Westman is a plump little brunette, and is just 20 years old. On one of her trips last year she found three good sized bears in the road. The horse, on espying them, became frightened, threw his rider to the ground, and, turning around, ran back the road as he came. Miss Westman started after the runaway, and, over-taking him, remounted and rude right through the savage cordon, and, strange to say, she was not attacked—Portland Oregonian.

A man living near Davis & Cowell's lime kilns has been catching quail in a peculiar way. For three weeks he has been spreading grain in the road near his place, where quail abound. A few that were not fully drunk were easily caught by his dog. He has practiced the same method since successfully.—Santa Cruz Surf.
A City of the Past.
Somewhere in the thirties, remarks The Savannah (Ga.) News, St. Joseph, Fla., was a thriving city of several thousand people. There was also a railroad running from Iola on the Apalachicola river to St. Joseph. Today there is not a vestige of the city remaining nor of the railroad. William Samuels, an old colored man, who lives near Bain bridge, Ga., said that many years ago he lived in St. Joseph, and traveled thence by the railroad from Iola; also stating that it was the first and the last time in his life be ever rode on the car.
