Abraham will have an exhibit of its line oranges at the forthcoming Citrus Fair in Los Angeles. Our citrus fruits are second to none, and have heretofore taken first prizes at county fairs. We should be able to take a premium for the best locality display. In Messrs McFadden and Keith our orange-growers have able representatives who will see that our display is properly made. Besides the citrus fruits to be exhibited at the fair, the ladies are requested to furnish flowers to take along with the exhibit. Let us make a grand display. We can have the finest at the fair.
The mustering-out of Company C of Los Angeles converts the Seventh Infantry Regiment back into the battalion whence it emerged by the muster in our local military company. It is difficult to say just what motive existed for this summary procedure. By the muster-out Colonel Russell, against whom serious charges are pending, is deprived of his title and his office, and ceases to be an officer of the militia. The Brigadier General commanding the brigade is given authority to muster in another company in his brigade and members of the mustered-out company will be permitted to re-enlist. The order recites the fact that its insurance is based upon the necessity for re-organizing the regiment. The whole matter is obscure, and the alleged reason for the muster-out is particularly so. We may expect later developments shortly. There is much in the order that smacks of the rottenness which has lately been charged against certain quarters of the N.G.C.
Since the above was written the Governor has suspended the Adjutant General's order for thirty days. On all sides it seems there is confusion worse confounded.
F. O. Cass of Vernon, mention of whose discovery of a new "lady-bug" was made in these columns last week, was arrested on Monday on a charge of misdemeanor, the offenses that he failed to rid his orange orchard of scale after having been notified to promotemen, deputy, etc. The Illinois Central tracks now skirting the water's edge are to be lowered below the grade and covered with a grass plat as permanent. The scheme will increase five times the space of the Lake Front Park and provide the largest park in the world, located in the very center of the great city. The site as outlined is thirty-two acres larger than the grounds of the Paris Exposition. The lake front is the focus of all the street-car lines in the city and is on the Belt Line Railway which crosses every track entering Chicago. The harbor is also to be greatly improved.
The Free Press of Santa Ana allows its zeal to outrun its discretion in its comments upon the action of Justice Pierce of this township in the battery case of Riley against Cheeseman. It charges Judge Pierce and Judge McCoy of Westminster with gross ignorance not properly keeping their dockets and certifying the proceedings to the trial court at Santa Ana, thereby leaving a loop-hole open for the defendant to crawl through. As far as Judge Pierce is concerned, the charge is untrue. He sent a transcript of his dock and all the required papers to the Justice at Westminster, immediately upon a change of venue being taken, and there his duty in the premises ended. The Free Press should be sure of its facts, before applying the epithet "Dogberry" to reputable and able men.
The Riley-Cheeseman affair, by the way, promises to occupy the courts for some time. Riley had Cheeseman arrested for battery. The cause was transferred from Justice's Court here to Westminster. The District Attorney dismissed the case, and filed a new complaint in the Justice's Court at Santa Ana, where a jury trial was had, resulting in Cheeseman being found guilty and fined $100. An appeal has been taken to the Superior Court on the ground that the dismissal of the action was a bar to any further prosecution. Cheeseman then had Riley arrested for battery and the cause was heard at Westminster on Tuesday before a jury, who rendered a verdict of "not guilty." And now we learn that the attorney for Riley is preparing to bring an action for damages against Cheeseman for battery.

F. O. Cass of Vernon, mention of whose discovery of a new "lady-bug" was made in these columns last week, was arrested on Monday on a charge of misdemeanor, the offense being that he failed to rid his orange orchard of scale after having been notified to do so by the Horticultural Commissioners. The arrest was made under the new Act, passed by the last Legislature, and in consequence great interest attached to the case by orange growers throughout the State. Mr. Cass was acquitted by a jury of his peers, the defense being that, while he had not sprayed with any of the washes prescribed by the Horticultural Commissioners, he had introduced a cross between the Australian lady-bug and the native "twice-stabbed" bug, and which he had put to feed on the red scale. It is claimed by Cass and some of his neighbors that the treatment required by the Horticultural Commissioners is both injurious to the trees and worthless as a scale exterminator.
B. Edmiston writes to the Riverside Press about the vine disease, disagreeing with the Government vine expert, Professor Pierce, that the cause of the malady is attributable to "microbes" in the sap. Often some parts of a vine are badly affected, he maintains, while other parts seem perfectly sound. In many vineyards last summer, single branches could be found badly affected on scores of vines, while the other branches were sound and full of fruit. Were the disease caused by "microbes" swimming in the sap, manifestly the vitality of the whole vine would be impaired, and not merely that of a lone branch here and there. It is well to investigate, and even to build theories as a basis for experimenting in a small way. But let us remember that a theory, however plausible, is of little value till backed by established facts. The coming summer will probably enable Riverside vinegrowers to decide whether their vineyards are to go as many in other places have gone, or not. But there seems to be no great cause for alarm. The vines, so far as can be judged in the pruning, generally seem full of sap and vitality. And as it is now known that the disease has been in some of their vineyards to a limited extent for several years, in view of the trilining progress it has made there seems good ground for hoping that its ravages will not be great.
W. R. McIntosh, editor and general manager of the Santa Ana Blade, was in town on Tuesday afternoon, having been called to attend the case of "Dr. Brown," who was arrested for obtaining money under false pretendment.
An appeal has been taken to the Superior Court on the ground that the dismissal of the action was a bar to any further prosecution. Cheeseman then had Kiley arrested for battery and the cause was heard at Westminster on Tuesday before a jury, who rendered a verdict of "not guilty." And now we learn that the attorney for Kiley is preparing to bring an action for damages against Cheeseman for battery.
In our report of the roll of honor of West school last week, Miss Perley's list of pupils was inadvertently credited to Miss Baker's department, a report of which failed to reach us in time for publication. The mistake occurred in the hurry of the make-up. We promise it shall not occur again.
Essence of the Supervisors.
The Board met in regular session at Santa Ana on Monday. The deed of the Stearns Ranchos Company to land purchased at Buena Park was received and accepted. The Road Overseer of Buena Park was instructed to open the road.
W. H. Spurgeon was appointed a committee of one to locate the County Jail on the lot owned by the county.
A change was ordered made in the boundaries of Delhi and Sycamore school districts.
The action of the board in regard to the demands of the Partition Commission for expenses during the month of December was reconsidered. The original motion of the board, to allow the Commissioners pay for only the days of actual legal meetings, was reconsidered and lost by the unanimous vote of the board.
The County Assessor was authorized to rent the storeroom of J. R. Congdon on Fourth street for four months, or longer, if required, at a rental of $15 per month.
Company G's Next Election.
The following special orders from brigade headquarters are self-explanatory:
HEADQUARTERS 1ST BRIDGE, N. G. C., (Los Angeles), February 24.
Special Orders No. 91
Company G, Seventh Regiment of Infantry, N. G. C., will hold an election for Captain of said company, vice Capt. S. O. Wood, term expired, at its armory on Thursday evening, March 13, 1890.
Major Chas. S. McKelvey, Ninth Regiment of Infantry, N. G. C., will preside at said election and will hold the same in accordance with Section 1927 of the Political Code of California.
By command of Brigadier-General Johnson.
L. S. BUTLER,
Lieut.-Col. and A. A. General.
No election for First or Second Lieutenant will be held, by the resignation of Lieut. Lewis was recently elected to fill the vacancy and Sergeant Browning was elected to be Second Lieutenant. Their terms do not expire until they have served two years.
County Finances.
The semi-annual report of the County Treasurer shows that there remains a balance of $3,083.74 to the credit of Anaheim School District. Centralia School District has $445.18 in the treasury; Fullerton, $2,-380 82; Orangethorpe, $424 97 and Placen-
W. R. McIntosh, editor and general manager of the Santa Ana Blade, was in town on Tuesday afternoon, having been called to attend the case of "Dr. Brown," who was arrested for obtaining money under false pretenses and representing himself as the business manager of our contemporary. Mr. McIntosh will shortly sever his connection with the Blade, the paper having been sold into other hands. Since his management of the paper he has demonstrated his ability in lines of varied newspaper work. The changed aspect of affairs throughout the office and the greatly improved condition of the journal at test that fact abundantly. He will take a position on a Los Angeles newspaper. Santa Ana loses a gentleman of excellent and amiable qualities, and the press of the county an able and painstaking representative. May his lines be cast in pleasant places.
Thorough the appointment of a receiver for the American sugar refinery of San Francisco, by Judge Wallace, the employees of said refinery, amounting to nearly 500, were thrown out of employment. Monday they held a meeting and adopted resolutions declaring the act of closing the factory the cause of a great calamity among them, and an outrage on the welfare of the working class who are thereby deprived of the means of supporting their families. The factory was closed in consequence of an order from the Superior Court, declaring the franchise forfeited because of the refinery's participation in the sugar trust.
Lake Front Park, in Chicago, will probably be the site of the World's Fair. So far as the choice of the sub-committee can decide the question the location is settled. The scheme provides for widening the park out into the lake from 500 to 1,700 feet. This gives 268 acres for buildings,
No election for First or Second Lieutenant will be held, as by the resignation of Lieut. Gale, Lieut. Lewis was recently elected to fill the vacancy and Sergeant Browning was elected to be Second Lieutenant. Their terms do not expire until they have served two years.
Commit Finances.
The semiannual report of the County Treasurer shows that there remains a balance of $3,083.74 to the credit of Anaheim School District. Centralia School District has $445.18 in the treasury; Fullerton, $2,-380.82; Orangethorpe, $424.97 and Placentia, $647.80. The report also shows that Anaheim Road District has overdrawn $454.74, and Fullerton district has overdrawn $262.20. Since January 31st there has been taken from the General Road Fund the amount of $6,863.24, and placed to the credit of various road districts. Anaheim has received $948.30, Fullerton $826.72 and Buena Park $74.54. The expert recently appointed to examine the books of the county officials reports the books of the Treasurer correct, and finds the condition of county finances to be as follows: Total tax levy $159,737.64; 5 per cent additional delinquent, $588.69; total $160,346.33. Delinquent tax list unpaid, $7,665.76; 5 per cent additional penalty, $404.04. The expert finds the Tax Collector has turned over $12 10 too much into the Treasury, but everything else is correct.
Objection Made.
H. G. Wilshire of Fullerton writes as follows to the Los Angeles Herald in regard to the change in the schedule of running trains over the California Southern:
The first morning train from Santa Ana to Los Angeles is hereafter to arrive in Los Angeles at 10:10 A.M., instead of 8 A.M., as formerly. This new arrangement stops all man and children who formerly were wont to go to Los Angeles daily to business and school, consequently is causing intense dissatisfaction to the patrons of the read. Monday night on the afternoon train a petition to restore the old schedule received the signature of every man on the train, and many were the compliments bestowed on the Santa Fe for the sagacity displayed in making such an inconvenient change.
Wine Shipments.
The large increase in the wine trade noted for the last year seems likely to be equaled, if not exceeded, in the present twelve month. The figures of the shipments of California
Illinois County's edge are found covered.
The scheme of the Lake is thirty-thirds of the front is in the city railway which is Chicago. The moved.

There is some excitement among members of the Seventh Infantry Regiment over the mastering-out of Captain Starin's Company C of the Eagle Corps, Los Angeles. The following orders were received at Brigade headquarters at Los Angeles on Saturday: General Headquarters, State of California, Adjutant General's Office, Sacramento, February 18, 1890. Special Orders, No. 2.]
(1) After mature deliberation, this office has come to the conclusion to muster out one of the companies of the Seventh Regiment of Infantry, N. G. C., for the purpose of giving the Brigade Commander an opportunity to reorganize the regiment. Therefore, Company C of that regiment, located in the city of Los Angeles, is hereby ordered to be mustered out of the State military service. Company C is selected for muster-out because it has shown the smallest percentage of attendance at drills, but 40 per cent of its members having been present at drills during the month of January, 1890. The muster-out of the company will take effect on the first day of March, proximo. Brigadier-General E. P. Johnson, commanding the First Brigade, will detail Major A. W. Barrest to take charge of the State, regimental, or company property or funds that may be in possession of the company or any of its members immediately en receipt of this order. The muster-out of Company C

General Crook's campaign to have Geronimo's band removed to Port Sill, within striking distance of their old homes, is being conducted with far more ability than characterized his campaign in Arizona. General Crook has not yet been able to explain away the objection that Geronimo's presence at Port Sill would be a constant measure to Arizona and New Mexico. Nevertheless he continues to struggle on in the name of the Indian Aid Society, with whom the movement originated.
It is stated positively that Dom Pedro will when the Constitutional Convention meets in Rio De Janeiro in November next, notify that body of his desire to renounce all claim to his title and ask that he be permitted to return to his people as a private citizen and aid them to firmly establish a republic. It is currently reported in San Bernardino that Claus Spreeckle refused to sell sugar to L. Saroni & Co., candy-makers, because the latter formerly patronized the American Sugar Refinery, which was recently closed down. Saroni, when seen, stated that the California Refinery had refused to sell him, but had assigned no reason therefore, though his credit was good. In order to keep his employees at work he had been purchasing sugar through brokers after paying as much as 2½ cents more per pound. On this account, at the meeting of the Directors of the
