EVENTS OF THE WEEK Important Affairs in the Irrigation District. Election of an Engineer -- Director Greeley Tenders His Resignation—Lieut. Gade Remains from the Tyrothera—In the Shadow of a Court-Martial—Nationalist Meeting—Marriage—Two Horse Thieves Arrested. The Board of Directors of the Anaheim Irrigation District met in regular session at their office on Tuesday morning, Directory Hunter, Zeyu, Ryan and Greeley present. The minutes of previous meeting were read and adopted, with some slight alterations. Director Greeley moved that the last paragraph of the minutes of the meeting of Oct. 10 be struck out; seconded by Director Greeley and carried. This clause is one cited in our editorial columns last week, when it stated that Greeley walked out of Directors room during the progress of meeting on that date, leaving the meeting without a quorum. Following resolution was introduced Director Ryan. "That the Secretary of District reply to the latter of the S. P. Co., dated October, to the effect that the Board of Directors knows of no law or equity for the exemption of authority of the S. P. R. R. from taxation, the contrary, known of many reasons should impel railroad company torate generously and without quibble in movement as the present one, has for its object the general purpose of this district. In this prosperity flood company will be among the first whom they seem to wish to throw into burden. Further, that the S. P. who is requested to take this matter further advertisement before making a refusal to pay their taxes for the already stated, and that a suit of any connection with this matter must damage to both parties; to the dis- tain delay occasioned and to the rail company in a loss of a maternal sympathy people unanimous in an earnest effort to push this system to a speedy conclusion. And further to request a de-liveries as taxes are now due and payable resolution was unanimously carried by Ryan also offered the following: All then our American farmers, for these the Kendler's tax gether always learn them keep enough for seed and food until the next year; while our Americans Kendler not only take seed and food but fertilize the meadows and take the land. H. C. Kellogg instituted the absurdity of the idea that things would right themselves. That competition would be the natural remedy. He showed that mercantile combinations were imperative and wealth was concentrating most rapidly in a few hands; that he-day wealth was more unequally distributed in the United States than in England; that 25,000 people own half of the United States. Dr. Pfeninger said he was a nationalist because he wanted the future livelihood of his children assured; that to-day the young man found all avenues to wealth or even fair support for himself closed, let alone a family were closed. On motion the chair appointed the following to act on further permanent organization: H. C. Gade, Dr. J. P. Pfeninger, Wm. Crowther, Wm. Smith, Marshall Haight, C. Schindler, Mr. Schneider, H. C. Kellogg, Mr. Williams, H. O. Wilshire, F. G. Ryan. GADE RESIGNS. The First Lieutenant of Company G Steps Down and Out. Militia circles here were all torn up on Monday, when it was learned from headquarters that an order had been issued convening a general court-martial to be held soon to try First Lieutenant H. C. Gade of Company G, Anaheim Tyroleens. At the time the news was received by the local militiamen there was nothing definite as to what the charges against Lieutenant Gade would be. The date of the court had not been fixed, and consequently no one knew when the sensational developments that almost every one was talking of would be called up for official investigation. The detail of the court was composed of Captain James D. Scarborough, Company F, Los Angeles; Judge Advocate; Lieutenant Colonel Palmer and Captain Driffel, Company D, Pomena; Captain Nernery, Company B, San Diego; Captain Scriber, Company A, and Lieutenant Cross, Company C, Los Angeles. On Tuesday morning Captain Wood received Lieutenant Gade's resignation, as follows: ANAHKIM, Cal., Nov. 4, 1889. To Capt. S. O., Wood: I hereby tender my resignation as First Lieutenant of Company G, Seventh Regiment, N. G. Adherable Interest Manifested Im Promulgating the New Idea The nationalist meeting at Kroeger's Saturday last many of the leading statements, which was endorsed by H. C. Kellogg, who was chosen secretary chairman and Doctor Pfeninger elected temporary secretary. H. G. made a short address, showing that salvation for the farmer was the chief of monopoly. Mr. Crowther, in his decisive plea for nationalism, made the statement, which was endorsed by not one-quarter of the farm that made enough to pay taxes this year that next year would be no better, if as small Haight Esq., in endorsing the preceding speaker, said that he had been much better of if sight had he rolled his talents up in the maplin and buried them rather than attempt to increase them by farm. He would now have had his original cash if he had exercised the sagacity of the apostolic foolish servant. Trade was most forcible in his preamble of the urgent need of immediate action by the people to protest themselves against repugnance of monopoly. He said that neither the failure or abandonment relieved farmers any more than a rich lead helped the workmen in stock mines. That this year's crop was an enormous; in Dakota a fail-out in both States the farmers were The Egyptian fallahs are better Bakerfield by Constable Landell last week to answer to the charge of larceny, has been in jail since his arrival here. His trial comes up to morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock before Judge Pierce, the delay being occasioned in order to await the arrival of witnesses. Melendrez spent his schooldays in Anaheim, and claims acquaintance with many of our citizens. He has lately been living here, having, so it is reported, returned to the scenes of his boyhood after spending a number of years behind the bars at San Quantin for horse stealing. It is thought that Melendrez is one of the band of horse thieves who have lately infested this section and it is believed enough evidence can be brought to light to send him back to prison. It was feared a few nights ago that an attempts might be made to liberate him from jail by some Mexicans residing in this neighborhood who are fearful lest he inform the authorities as to the methods of the horse thieves who have lately been working here. A guard was kept all night at the jail, and subsequently Melendrez was taken to Santa Ana. In conversation with a representative of this journal he stated that he did not know what he had been arrested for other than that some people had been accounting him of being a "bad man." He insisted that he had never stolen a dime worth from anyone in town. His trial will be watched with much interest. Another Morning Arreased. Shariff Harris and Deputy Tom Hall arrived in town on Tuesday evening in search of Geraldo Ureta, the Mexican shepherd whom Morales robbed and afterward threatened to kill for "peaching" on him. Ureta is charged by Melendrez, now in prison at Santa Ana awaiting examination for home theft, with having stolen the horses which Melendrez sold at Bakerfield, and which Marshal Landell recovered last week. Melendras a few days ago sent for Ureta, and when the latter worthy repaired to the county jail he informed Melendres that if he intended to tell the police about his (Ureta's) theft he would leave the country at once. Melendras promised him he would not tail and Ureta returned to Anaheim. Subsequently Melendras repented and made a clean breast off it Shariff Harris. It was thought at that time, however, that Ureta had had time enough to skip the country, but the Shariff decided to visit this place in search of him.
