EVENTS OF THE WEEK. Rattlesnakes and Their Poison. Official Canvases of Last Week's Election Death from a Rattler's Mite The New Irrigation District—Esc. In the entire United States there have been discovered no less than twenty well-marked species of poisonous snakes. Roughly grouped, these consist of the viper or the Harlequin snake, five species. (2) The Moccasin snake, upperheads (Ancistrodon), four species. The Black or Prairie rattlesnake (Cancunia), four species, found largely in the Western States, having rattles, but all ones, and closely allied to the real rat-snakes, the Crotali proper, the species of which number fourteen. So far as I know three of these species are found in this town: the Crotalus lacifer, the striped rattlesnake, the one commonly found about haimel and between this section and the Crotalus Molossus, or black-tailed rattlesnake, large and rarely found in the same location; the Crotalus Adamanteus, the around rattlesnake of a more coppery tint, and more deadly in its bite, preferring haimel and mountains for its habitation. All these venomous snakes the poison is secreted in a gland lying on each side and below, the eye, connected by a short joint with the base of the tooth or fang. These fangs, usually the only teeth on the upper jaw, are curved or scythe-shaped, the venuxy forward, like the squirrel's incision. In fully developed snakes they are three-fourths of an inch long, hollow and tapering to a fine point and freely movable. When at rest they lie along the uninterrupted surface of the upper jaw, enclosed in a death or hood of elastic membrane like a wound in its scabbed. Erection of the fang causes this sheath to slip off like the finger a glove, and gather in folds around the base of the tooth. When about to strike, the rattlesnake throws itself into a number of superimposed masses upon the mass of which the neck and a muscular more loosely curved; the head located, the tail projecting and rapidly vibrating, producing the rattle. By a sudden contraction of the muscles of the convexity of the curves, the anterior part of the body straightens out, forcibly darting the headward. At this instant the jaws are wide-opened, the fangs spring into position, blowing off the sheath as they leap forward; the back of the head rests firmly fixed on the neck. As the blow is given, the powerful muscles which at the same instant close forcefully the lower jaw, drive a powerful arm through the before that her man was bitten by a child dog and the egg and still were applied so soon as possible. A doctor was sent for his did not arrive for several hours. Then he administered some internal remedy, but said nothing could have been done better than had been done, and now, after a lapse of more than thirty years, there have been no evil results from the bite. Julia Knowlton. THE ELECTION. Official Canvases of Wednesday's Vote—Greeley Lands. Twenty-six hundred and seventy-eight votes were cast at the election on Wednesday last. The County Commissioners canvased the returns on Monday, with the result given below. Every candidate open on the Non-Partisan ticket is elected, and Santa Ana is chosen county seat by a vote of 1,724 against 775 for Orange, giving the former city a majority of 949. The following is the official vote as furnished us by Judge Towner. The vote on county seat does not include that of Westminster, which has not yet been forwarded to the Commissioners: SUPERIOR JUDGE: Towner...1,563 Mammore...506 Morgan...567 Towner's plurality...510 DISTRICT ATTORNEY. Edwards...2,634 COUNTY CLERK: Wickham...1,714 Cadman...966 Wickham's majority...748 COUNTY REORDER: Poster...1,387 Moebaugh...1,274 Poster's majority...113 SHERIFF: Harris...1,377 Jerome...794 West...427 Harris' plurality...156 TREASURER: Wall...1,701 Lockhart...975 Wall's majority...726 ASSENSOR. Smythe...2,639 SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS. Greley...2,661 SURVEYOR. Wood...2,651 CORONER. Mills...2,085 Ellis...580 Mills' majority...1,535 W. H. Spurgeon is elected Supervisor in the First District with 551 votes to his credit, having no opponent; Jacob Ross in the Second District, likewise had no competitor, and is elected with 515; S. Littlefield in this Supervisor district, the Third, received 503 votes, being the only hold-over member of the board. In the Fourth District there is talk of a contest between Armor, of Orange, who received 286 votes, and gains as easily as possible. The Board of Directors of this jurisdiction District met in the parish Bank of Anahaim on Saturday last. Present, Mennon Hunt Greley and Woods, absent Zayne Ammer Neelshing reported making the announcement of proposed district, and asked for additional order to have the work done by Perez. Plex James was elected Seventh Board of Directors, and Richard Berney. The salaries of them are not fixed; there have no data by could properly do the same. File his official hand in the sum which was accomplished. The Bank of Anahaim was made of the Board of Directors, with from 10 A.M. to 2:20 p.m. The Directors will set up a Board station for six days beginning Sept next. Adjourned to August sixth. Amahaim Winter Company. The Board of Directors of this Water Company held their regular Saturday afternoon. President Schern was in the chair Korn and Gilman, who were elected to the places of Memra Zeyn and the board, were not present. Mr notified the board he would not position. Mr McDermont was elected Director in place of Mr. B. M. Haight presented a bill for a committee-man under the Witch which, after a spirited discussion over until the next meeting. A special meeting of the company held on Saturday next and twelve citizens of the water district have vited to be present; enter in saltation in regard to the paid charge for the ditches, water franchises of the Anahaim Water in view o., the sale to the Wright district. The following gentlemen were meet with the board for the above Memra McPadden, Gilman, Willam pau Melrose, Boege Darling,Lan Ernest Browning and Erwin Barry. Another Mattler. On Monday morning, as Charleston was driving into town, a large ran under one of the horses attack vehicle, near Sidney Holman's west of town. The horses became end at the rattler, but Mr Turp When about to strike, the rattlesnake throws itself into a number of superimposed upon the mass of which the neck and a few inches more lie loosely curved; the head is elevated, the tail projecting and rapidly vibrating, producing the rattle. By a sudden contraction of the muscles of the convexity of the curves, the anterior part of the body straightens out, forcibly darting the head forward. At this instant the jaws are wide-separated, the fangs spring into position, blowing off the shred as they leap forward, the back of the head rests firmly fixed on the neck. As the blow is given, the jaw penetrate deeply whatever they strike. The powerful muscles which at the same instant close forcefully the lower jaw, drive a hole of venom from the gland through the circular tooth into the wound. The mouth, now fixed at the wound, drags with the whole weight of the serpent's body causing the fangs to penetrate still deeper and enlarge the wound. This act completed, the serpent now releases itself with withdrawing the head; the fangs retract, and the former coiled attitude of passive deformation is assumed, ready for another blow: This is done with lightning like rapidity. Should the rattler miss his aim and the jaws come together with a snap, engaging nothing, the fangs, by a peculiar mechanism, are rotated outward so that their points just clear lower jaw on each side; otherwise they would penetrate the muscular structure of the lower jaw and the rattlesnake kill himself. His venom is just as deadly as his own blood as to that any other organic being. The force of the motion of the virus is seen in such cases. The angry serpent striking wildly has been observed to spit the poison five or six feet. The venom of rattlesnakes, like that of all other poisonous snakes, can be readily isolated. It is a fluid, varying in color from dark amber to a deep yellow and is of acid reaction. Thoroughly dried it appears as semi-transparent yellow particles, which remain unchanged for long periods of time. It equally virulent whether dry or preserved in alcohol or glycerine. Dr. Mitchell of Philadelphia, who spent years in the study of snake poisons, has in his possession a glycerine solution which was deadly after twenty years of preservation. All attempts at chemical isolation of the active principles of these venoms have failed. There are found two well marked poisonous principles, which composition are closely allied to certain normal constituents of the blood of all animals. Known as peptones and globulins. In using death the peptones seem to act more suddenly upon the nerve centres, producing convulsions and paralysis of respiratory and other nerve centers. While the globus exert their action upon the blood and blood vessels. When injected into the blood in the case of one bitten by the rattlesnake, there is immediate swelling of the part; pain gradually increasing until becomes an agony; and intense violet black discoloration of the skin at the point of injection; which with the swelling gradually extends over several inches space, and may involve the entire limb or even remote parts of the body; convulsions with foaming at the mouth often occur. The bloodyells at once become profound altered. The blood remains fluid, refusing to coagulate on exposure to air. At the same time the smaller blood vessels become altered in structure and unable to resist the normal blood pressure. The blood, black and in a state of commencing disorganization, quenches as freely through the vessel walls if they were but cheese cloth. This causes the tense swelling, pain and deep dislocation spoken of above. As the action of the poison on the system becomes more profound, the pulse becomes variable; now feeble and fluttering; the respiration grows shallow and shorter. The blood, black and in a state of commencing disorganization, noises as freely through the vessel walls as if they were but cheese cloth. This causes the tense swelling, pain and deep dislocation spoken of above. As the action of the poison on the system becomes more profound, the pulse becomes variable; now rapid, now feeble and fluttering; the respirations grow shallow and shorter. Death ensues in some cases from paralysis of the respiratory nerve centers; in others from paralysis of the heart; others still from hemorrhages into the substance of the brain, or other vital organs, and again from inability of the disorganized blood cells to perform their functions. There is no doubt, however, that the respiratory nerve centers are the parts of the system most vulnerable to snake venom, and that death is commonly due to their paralysis. The rapidity with which death follows depends largely upon the amount of poison injected, and the attempts made by proper treatment to neutralize its action. Some cases die in a very short time, others live for hours or even days before finally succumbing. In cases where recovery takes place, the patient is left very weak. Protracted illness is likely to follow; even permanent injury or loss of the limb bitten may be the final outcome. From lack of space allotted by the editor the proper treatment of snake bites and other suggestions connected with them, will be considered in the next issue of this paper. J. H. BULLARD. Ture for Poisonous Bites and Stings. It seems not to be generally known that a plaster made from the yolk of an egg and salt will cure nearly every poisonous sting bite. I will cite three of the worst cases I have personally known to be cured by it. A neighbor's child was stung on the side of the stock by a bumble bee and in a few minutes seemed likely to be smothered by the swelling; the breath came in labored gasps and the terrified mother sent to know what to do for her boy. I could not leave home that minute but sent word for her to apply soda, because it could be most quickly prepared, but to make a plaster of egg and salt and apply as soon as possible. In ten minutes I visited the patient and found him quietly sleeping with the swelling greatly reduced, and he felt no further inconvenience from the sting. Something more than twenty-five years ago Mrs. L. E. Spoonable was bitten by a rattlesnake. Being near a neighbor's than she was home she stopped and applied wet soda and as soon as she could reach home she applied the egg and salt. The bite pained her every minute for a number of years, probably because the poison had entered into the system too much to be withdrawn, before the plaster was applied. Fairview polled 74 votes, of which 55 favored Orange for the county seat and 9 favorided Santa Ana. For Superior Judge, Morgan received 28 votes, Towner 27 and Morgan 9. District Attorney—Edwards 71. Clerk—Cadman 46, Wickham 24. Recorder—Moabaugh 47, Foster 24, Sheriff—Jerone 32, Harris 16, West 10. Treasurer—Lockhart 45, Wall 27. Assessor—Smythe 68. Superintendent Schools—Greeley 73. Surveyor—Wood 68, Coroner—Mills 57, Ellis 35. Death from a Rattlesnake Bite. Last Thursday afternoon at Garden Grove, as Arthur Kiraten, aged 12, was pulling boots in his parents' garden, he was bitten twice by a rattlesnake. The boy was immediately taken to the house and given large quantities of alcohol. Thus treatment having no apparent effect, Dr. Bullard was sent for, and he arrived about two hours after the accident. The poison had by that time so permeated the boy's system that all attempts at saving him were futile and he died on Friday morning. We learn that it was some three hours before the doctor arrived at the patient's bedside. The boy was then going into convulsions, and nothing could be done to save his life. The members of the family had tried several remedies, but no effect was produced. A chicken and cat were killed and their skins placed upon the snakebite, and the boy's arm held in sour milk. When finally it was determined to send for a doctor the unfortunate lad was too badly under the poison's influence to recover. His face blackened and for many hours he suffered torturing pains. He was buried in the Anaheim cemetery on Saturday. The snake was killed by the neighbors and found to have nine rattles. It measured nearly four feet in length. Dr. Ballard brought it to town and will have it stuffed. G. A. H. Encompassment. Commander Melvin Mudge has issued the following circular in reference to the coming Grand Army Encampment to be held at San Pedro auxit month: The outlook for the encampment at San Pedro, August 8th to 19th inclusive, is most flattering. The interest manifested by the comrades and the W.R.C. throughout the district is much greater than was anticipated when the permanent organization of the Seventh Inspection District Encampment was affected. In reply to a query made as to the cause of delay in the action brought by the city of Anaheim against Krug some months ago, to condemn land on Center street for sidewalk purposes, the City Attorney said: "There has been no delay. The defendant resides in San Francisco and had therefore thirty days in which to make appearance in Court. The complaint was demurred to and came on for argument at the regular time. The demurrier was overruled and ten days given to answer. At the expiration of that time, an additional ten days was given, as is usually the custom. The answer was filed in the latter part of June and the cause came up in Court on the first Monday in July, to be placed upon the calendar. As however, the proper place for trial is in Orange county, this case, with a large number of others over which the Superior Court of Orange county will have jurisdiction, was passed, and it will be tried in Santa Ana within a very short time after the Superior Court organizes. I repeat, the case has taken its regular course and could not have been hastened more than it has been. There are probably a hundred suits, the complaints in which were filed in Los Angeles before the complaint against Krug, which will not come to trial for several months yet." The Postoffice.
