LITERARY CORP. "Tennor" has been translated into modern English. Of all Mr. Howell's works, "Venetian Life" has had the largest sale. The entire estate left by Dr. James Primm Clarke is worth less than $20,000. It is estimated that it will take ten years to publish all the posthumous works of Victor Hugo. Mrs. Susan Wallace, wife of the author of "Ben Hur," has a new work, "Rapose in Egypt." Mr. R. Stevens will tell the story of his South Pacific cruise in about fifty short serial articles. Gerald Massey, the English poet, is now in America and will give lectures throughout the country. Leona Daltry denies that she is "a lagittata offspring of the erotic brain of Elsa Wheeler Wilcox." New lyrics have been introduced into "The Cup" by Lord Tennyson at the request of Miss Mary Anderson. Anna Katherine Greene preserves the old stamps of the pencils with which she has written her tales. Max O'Ball formed a coppartnership with an elevator boy in Boston, and will use some stories the boy told him. An unpublished poem by Wordsworth, 700 lines long, will appear in Macmillan's new edition of the poet's works. M. Emile Zola was inspired, so it is said, to write "La Herve" by Lord Tennyson's line in "Lockney Hall Sixty Years After." Mrs. Alma Tadama and Mrs. Edmund Gome are sisters, and they resemble each other in being blonde, tall and quite talented. Bret Hartz, Mark Twain, Bill Nye, E. W. Howe, Charles Egbert Craddock and Joquin Miller made their first successes in western journals. Dr. Leland Miller, of Sheffield, Mass., has given $40,000 to Williams college to establish a chair in American history, literature and eloquence. It is said that Whittler's ambition when a young man was to become a politician, but that he was saved only by the tearful appeals of his friends. Mr. A. Miner Griswold, perhaps better known as "Pat Contributor," is to enter the lecture field to give the public information about "Queer Folk." Mrs. Austin Dobson, wife of the well-known poet, has taken up the profession of letters, having just published "Cherryburn," a volume of short stories. Rider Haggard writes in a pleasant corner room of his charming old man of Ditch Ingham, which is overrun with Bankside rooms, clematis and jasmine. A London author has written thirty novels in three years. This beats the record of any living man, but the writer's enormous labor has brought him only $1,000. Mr. Tracy Robinson, the poet, is "54, rosy." Mrs. Austin Dobson, wife of the well known poet, has taken up the profession of letters, having just published "Cherryburn," a volume of short stories. A London author has written thirty novels in three years. This beats the record of any living man, but the writer's enormous labor has brought him only $1,000. Mr. Tracy Robinson, the poet, is "54, rosy, sweet tempered, sunny hearted, gray, hand some, good," and has been connected with the Panama Canal company since 1880. It is said that Gen. Lew Wallace expects that his tragedy, "Commodus," which will appear in Harper's early in 1889, will do more for his reputation than did "Ben Hur." Speaking of the personal appearance of Lord Tennyson, Edmund Yates says that the laureate is a cross between a Guy Fawkes and the mysterious recluse of a melodrama. Mr. P. J. Blimson, who woos fame under the nom de plume, J. S. o'Dale, who is about 83 years of age, is blonde and very tall, affects the English in dress and accent, and is wealthy. Miss Olive Schreiner, author of the "Story of an African Farm," is an English governess who was born at the Cape of Germany and English parentage, the daughter of a missionary. A Boston literary genius invents names for books and plays, copyrights them and waits for bidders; his stock now consists of twenty-eight titles, for one of which he was offered several hundred dollars. Mrs. Laura C. Holloway, originally a Tenamese girl, whose parents lost their property during the war, kept them by her books and her diligent newspaper work, in great comfort to the end of their days. Mr. Ruskin has confided to his admirers that a shelf of the little cabinet in his study is loaded with poetical effusions which were the delight of my father and mother, and which I have not got the heart to burn. Mr. Frank Dempster Sherman, the poet sends in the most beautiful copy imaginable. It is more like old English print than the work of the pen, and each letter is formed as delicately and clearly as though angraved. Mrs. Mona Caird, who started the discussion on "Is Marriage a Failure" spends most of her time on a large estate in Hampshire, dividing her days between superintending her farm and performing literary work on a typewriter. Mrs. Arthur Stannard, better known as John Strange Winter, felt perfectly confident that the dramatization of "Bootle's Baby" would be a success because a black cat followed through the stage door. Maybe the play will have nine lives. NECKWEAR NOTES. High standing collars are allowable. Turned down lace frills are as popular as ever. Dainty arrangements of lace and ribbon are worn. Immense round collars of lace or colored crape, fluted in Pierrot style, are adopted by young ladies. Lace bows of white or cream are highly becoming and impart a charming dressiness to a costume. The convenient folds of narrow ribbon are still popular, and may terminate in a short jabot if desired. Exquisite collars of shaded motte ribbon, two inches wide, and of any becoming color, open in the back, are folded to a point in front and finished with a cravat bow of the same. High collars of white gauze laid in folds and striped with gils are very stylish. A width of the gauze laid in Chevron folds, with two ends arranged in a sailor knot, forms a pretty plastron finish. An elegant collar is made of two pieces of Mohlin lace joined together on the plain edge and laid in lengthwise folds around the neck. It is closed in front by a bow of the lace and two small bows of inch wide ribbon. A pretty confection of plat Val. lace is so laid in fine plates that the lace gradually widens to a point in front. The collar is ornamented with two rosettes of matin ribbon, and ribbon loops and ends adorn the point of the plastron. When a man ventures an opinion he will find some one who opposes it. Hence a man without opposition is a man without opinions—Squire Hobbs. Invented by a Bannahar's Wife. The wife of a New York banker has invented a machine for making wire ropes, the patent of which she has sold to a San Francisco firm for $25,000 cash and a royalty. The way she came to his upon this was from a device she used to twine her wristed—Chicago Herald. The Longest Word in English. Which is the longest word in the English language? "Unilion," because there's a mill between the first and last letter—Christian Register. The Register has probably forgotten ten words being named. There are three miles in a league—New York Observers. In the Marriage Service. About as unlucky as there is in this world is the word "ohay" in the marriage service. The bad wives won't abey, and the good ones never give their husbands occasion to commend them—Martha's Vineyard Herald. Federal Good Paper Mail.
