THE GLORIOUS RAIN.
Batignon Our Cylinder From, and Cannon Miner.
Rain began falling yesterday morning shortly after 4 o'clock and continued in a steady downpour until noon when a slight cessation ensued in the pluvial dispersion. At about 11 o'clock, the exhaust pipe being clogged with debris of one character and another, the roof of our composing room began leaking, and soon a perfect torrent of water was descending on type, pressure, potassium, shortage and everything else. A large section of the plastering on the ceiling way and came tumbling down at the cylinder's side, narrowly snapping the ink fountain and distributing rubble. Had these latter been flushed with the falling plaster, water and dirt no longer would have been seen on day. A heavy accumulation of the roof revealed the smoothing floor of the roof was covered with six inches of water, and that there was imminent danger of immediate flooding of our composing room. Blankets, oilcloths and heavy paper were hastily called into requisition and the cylinder covered as much as possible. A gang of plumbers (84 an hour) was despatched to the scene upon the roof, and our special war correspondent took the first train for the northern latitude. In a short while the draining pipes were broken and a sheet of water plunged over the side of the building sufficient to propel a well-grown sugar refinery. Finally the leakers were stopped and at this writing it is safe to say the paper will in all probability appear as usual in the morning. This consummation was probably brought about by the herculean efforts of the religious editor, who let himself out with great effect for a few minutes when the excitement was at the highest.
At 6 o'clock last evening an inch and a half of rain had fallen, and the indications were favorable for an all-night downpour. It was raining steadily at that hour, with a warm wind blowing from the south. Total rainfall for the season, 10.88 inches. Last season to date, 14.88. Nearly twelve inches of rain fell last season between January 1st and March 1st, while this year the conditions are somewhat reversed, as we have received but scant three inches since the first day.

Constables Fisk and Inalay of Santa Ana came upon a band of tramps in the willows near the river bed last week, and discovered a large quantity of stolen property in their possession. The thieves were arrested and taken to Santa Ana. All the articles have been identified, except one saddle, supposed to have been stolen from Anahaim.
H. G. Wilshire of Pullerton writes us that he has some gennine sugar beet seed, sent by Claus Spreckels, which he will be glad to furnish free to those desiring to experiment. Mr. Wilshire has taken a great deal of interest in sugar beet culture and it well qualified to impart all necessary information to those desiring to experiment with beets.

BEET SUGAR.
Visit of Two Representatives of the American Sugar Millery.
Editor Gazette—One week ago last Saturday there came to Anaheim quietly on a short visit two gentlemen from San Francisco, representatives of the American sugar millery there, which is a member of the sugar trust. Those gentleman took a fair look at our country and took along a sample of our soil. They were very well satisfied with our lands and left best seed here for experimenting. They also inquired into our water system and advised to try planting in different months. Their idea is to plant at all seasons possible, and to run the factory continuously, if they put one near here. They will be back probably by the time our beets are ready to use, to find out the percentage of sugar; they came from Pomona and the Chino ranch, but preferred our neighborhood. We have the best lands and the largest country around us for that purpose. Their visit was very limited and from here they went by rail to San Diego. They seem to have studied the sugar best business fairly well in Europe. They advise planting the beats in rows fifteen inches apart and six inches apart in the row. It is somewhat different from the Spreckala method. Any one of our farmers who wants to give the raising of sugar beets a trial can get the seed from Max Nebelung with all the information necessary.
It seems that we have a fair show of getting a factory in our neighborhood. It depends now mostly on ourselves, to use this opportunity, and meet those people halfway and give them all the inducements possible. The main trouble with us will be about the water. Will the water company consent to the use of their water? On the other side of the river, they use the water for running the mill and nobody is hurt, but they had only one place to put that mill. Here we have to unite upon the site of a factory when the time comes.
