EVENTS OF THE WEEK. No Reasonable Prospect For Division. Annual Meeting of the Anaheim Water Company One of Our Model Orange Orchards Correspondence Meet Sugar Meeting at Garden Grove Dispatches received from Sacramento yesterday indicate that there is no reasonable prospect for the success of the bill for the division of this county. The Los Angeles Board of Trade and Chamber of Commerce have taken active steps against division, and telegrams have been sent to Sacramento stating that the universal sentiment is unfavorable to the scheme. If Mr. Edwards' bill passes the Assembly it will encounter such active opposition in the Senate that its defeat will be almost certain. There is not much fear of the bill ever getting through one lower house, however; at least not until the session of the Legislature is so far advanced that its burial in the Senate will be a matter of foregone conclusion. This will be wholesome news to the people, who even in the southern end of the county are thoroughly opposed to division at this time. ANNUAL MEETING. Condition of the Anaheim Water Company New Directors. The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Anaheim Union Water Company was held at Kroeger's Hall on last Saturday at 10:30 A.M. President F. There being 6,886 shares of stock issued to January 1st, the President announced that there were not the requisite number of shares represented to constitute a quorum, whereupon the meeting adjourned to 1 o'clock, when, upon re-assembling, there were found to be 4,727 shares represented either in person or by proxy. The minutes of the last annual meeting held January 28, 58, were read and approved. The Auditing Committee then made their report for the year ending December 31st last, as follows: The revenues of the company from all sources have been: Assessments $13,772.00 WATER AND GARDEN GROVE WITH ITS GREAT NORTH FACE Garden Grove Newport and surrounding country. I will provide only what I can see. Wonder if petitioners have for last Sunday law we has land the cases were filed on the dockets Minum Justices which had been carriage change of venue from None of them were ever tried. The Sunday law is good enough as it is now. I am sent to the Sunday as it suits me, not will be compounded to if these cranks get in their work as they are trying. Colonel Keith's Oranges Equal to Any Grown. A representative of the Gazette visited Colonel F.H.Keith's model orange orchard a day or two ago, for the purpose of ascertaining whether this season's crop of oranges were up to the national standard of excellence. This lovely orchard is located at the corner of Palm and North street, and contains six acres of as beautiful trees as can be found anywhere. Four acres are set with budded Washington Navels, four years old, and two acres are seedlings, fourteen years old. These latter trees will average a height of over twenty feet and are literally grooming under their weight of golden fruit. This has always been noted as one of the most carefully cultivated orchards in this section. To saunter through the fragrant rows of beautiful trees, robed in their garb of rich dark green foliage, and note the shining clusters of golden fruit everywhere—at the very top, aides, lower limbs and partly concealed within the dense green branches—a night long to be remembered. Every tree bends with the weight of its golden fruit, which is bright and glossy as silk, revealing under the microscope not the faintest touch of amat or scales. One seedling orange, when placed under the glass in the sunlight, revealed a surface as clear as crystal. This is the case with every orange that came under imagination. Upon one tree was a cluster of 20 Progressive Ensemble. A progressive suche party was given the residence of Fred Rimpan on Monday Street Tuesday evening. The occasion highly enjoyed, and was voted by present to have been one of the most parties held here in a long time. Last was occasioned when "Mat" Even was awarded the rubber doll for the man remaining longest at the "table. Miss Power received a hand vase for being the best lady player she remained at the "head" table evening. Among those present were Mrs. Fred Rimpan, Mr. and Mrs. M.W.Evensharty, Mr. and Mrs. M.W.Evensharty, Mrs. Hartmana, Mrs Edith Clothier, Power, Miss Zoilla Smythe, Miss Smythe, Miss Sophia Rimpan, Miss Deryl and Mserrie Fred Smythe, Frank Pan, Mr.Cadman, George V.Herr,Crukehel and others. Davis is circulating a petition for the establishment of a free reading room. Already a large number of signatures have been received, and the probability is that the project will be a success. No guarantee of the stockholder in the Anaheim Street Car Company being present at the regular annual meeting, which was to have been held on instursday, the meeting was adjourned until this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock. Major Mann and family leave to-day for Female, where they will reside in future. It is with deep regret that their departure is chronicled, but we hope soon to see them living in Anaheim again. A pleasant surprise party was tendered them at the Planter's Hotel on last Thursday evening. Anaheim Lodge of A. O.U.W. installed the following new officers on last Friday evening: R.J.Perry, P.M.W.; Joseph Halmann, M.W.; S.A.Danis, Former; W.H.Avary, Owner; Fred Christ, Guide; H.A.Bokel, Financial; F.U.Schaamberger, Receiver; T.S.Grinnahaw, Rescoror. Our friend the Los Angeles Herald rises to remark as follows, to-wit: To any legislator at Sacramento who desires to respect the wishes of the people of Los Angeles county, the Herald desires to say most emphatically that the sentiment in this county is ten to one against division. There will be a grand opening ball at S.8.Federman's new building on the evening of February 2d. It is expected that this will be one of the events of the season, and everybody be in attendance. A number of copies of this issue of the Gazette go to Sacramento this morning. Our adoption in the Legislature have manifested a desire to see what our members can accomplish upon the subject of county elections. Santa Ana is invited to have a list of Angelenos go down there on the first premise to witness a demonstration in favor of city division, promising that demonstrations from the east junction will be present to show "the strength of the people upon the heartland." As the demonstration in that area Anaheim is to hold its great eager host meeting, it is encouraged by the people from the eastern valley, it is vulnerable in present that will go to see the Santa Ana River outfit. PERSONAL MENTION. John Haume of Los Angeles was in town a few days during the past week. Alex Wright has accepted a position in keepergger in H.Ohaus's store. Miss Ron Davis, who for the past four months has been visiting relatives and friends at San Francisco, returned home on Sunday. Grimshaw will soon commence the season of his steam planing and grist mill construction to be in readiness to turn out work to be used in the construction of new Fullerton schoolhouse. Butters are at work putting the first coat on the Presbyterian Church. The painted red, while the lower portion is painted a drab with dark trimmings, making a pleasing contrast. The church is soon ready for oocopy. People of our town are almost unanimously opposed to the division of the county they think they are at present paying taxes, and with a division of the taxes are sure to be more than paid. It may be all right for Santa Ana, get the benefit of the new county wage, etc.; but the people of this side of the county becomes thickly populated with an oppressive tax. When part of the county becomes thickly populated we may look upon it in a different way we want no division at present. Using the most enjoyable of times held visibly for a long time was the picnic at the Santiago Canyon on last Monday young people of Fullerton and Buena in a four-horse coach furnished by the son livery stable. The occasion was holiday of one of the Social Four. The staff the St. George Hotel at 8 A.M. owner a drive of two hours they arrived canyon. The party amused them climbing the adjacent mountains, a fine view was had of the islands in specific, until lunch time, when a fine was prepared by the ladies, which the picnickers did ample justice to. The trip was made through the towns of Valleona, Orange and Santa Ana, where nephews of the surroundings were led by the merry songs and laughter cochokes. The party arrived 7 in the evening, after having passed enjoyable day. Among those present r. and Mrs. T. Cone, Mr. and Mrs. Chincinson, Mr. and Mrs. Foster, Miss McLott, Miss Everhardy, Miss Walah, Clamens and Mears L. Peckham, Amerege, H. Whitaker, J. Kelly of San Francisco, and E. R. Amerige. Fullerton Literary Society was largely on Friday last. After a spirited election of officers was held and likely of Placentia was elected President, the question for the next debate is, "That the use of machinery is detrimental to the working man." Kate Walsh of Los Angeles is the Mr. and Mrs. Hutchinson and Don Marcos Postor of San Francisco guests at the St. George on Friday in team of Mr. Peise of our town holding near the railroad station on the horses became frightened and at a tearing rate up Spadra road, deprived from or fearful in this loathsome area from any section in the State. Col. Keith's orchard shows to what extent he growing may be carried in this secrecy With proper care and attention or can be grown here fully the equal of riverside product, and in the majority cases our oranges will be the better. All tests and comparisons have proven assertion to be true. Our friend the Los Angeles Herald raises to remark as follows, to-wit: To any legislator at Sacramento who desires to respect the wishes of the people of Los Angeles county, the Herald desires to say most emphatically that the sentiment in this county is ten to one against division. There will be a grand opening ball at S. S. Pederman's new building on the evening of February 2d. It is expected that this will be one of the events of the season, and everybody be in attendance. Mr. Pederman's building is an ornament to Anabeheim and he deserves great credit for his antiquarian prize. Let the opening ball be a runner. Col. Keith has a three-year-old banana tree now in bloom in his garden. It is about twenty feet high and ten feet in circumference at the base. Banana culture is not much of a success here and this tree is grown purely for ornament, its large dark-red flower at the top of the tree being beautiful to behold. Arrangements have been made for a grand clay pigeon shoot to take place next Sunday at the rifle range of Company G. All who wish to take part in this match are requested to leave their names at J. Becher's barber shop. The first pigeon will fly punctually at 2 P.M. Spectators are free and are cordially invited to be present. Peter Pedersen, until recently proprietor of the City Bakery, died at noon on Saturday and was buried on Sunday. He had been suffering with typhoid fever, and was supposed to be on a fair way to recovery, when a relapse set in with the result stated. The deceased was known as an exemplary young man. His death is mourned by a large circle of friends. The two-year-old son of John Hartung had quite a serious spell of sickness last week, as the result of swallowing a quantity of sand. The little fellow seemed to relish a sandy diet and for several days had been indulging in the uncommon repast. On Sunday a physician was summoned in response to dangerous symptoms, when the little sufferer was relieved. Two or three special orange trains a week will soon leave this section for the markets of the East. Both the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe are making strentuous efforts to secure the handling of the orange crop this year, as it represents about double the weight of that of any other export from Southern California, and there is large profits connected with it. L.J.Rose has just received a consignment of twenty-five sky-larks from Europe, which he ordered five years ago. His agent had the greatest difficulty in securing the birds, which are said to be the only specimens in America. The birds are supposed to be the natural enemy of the scale bug. They will be let loose in a few days, except a few pairs which will be kept for breeding purposes. The building at Wilmington which was burned a couple of weeks ago, was owned by Fred Conrad of Anabehim, who had it insured in the London Liverpool and Globe Insurance Company. The Anabehim agent of the company, Richard Melrose, handed Mr. Conrad a check on Saturday for the full amount of the insurance, without any deduction whatever. That is the way that company does business.
