A CAMPIRE FISH STORY.
About this time last September a campfire burned brightly on the north shore of lake Superior, at a point a few miles west of the mouth of Pigeon river. Every evening three of my friends and I sat around the fire to smoke after supper pipes. When the pipes were glowing the incidents of the day's hunting were lovingly dwelt upon, and hunting and fishing stories were told. One night when I had returned to camp from the dark, clear waters of Lake Superior without the "whales" that I had beastfully alleged I would catch one of my comrades, whose hair was white and whose form was slightly bent with age, hooked through keen, black eyes at me, and then looked beyond me at the taut and hemlock pleasantly at ocean.
The fish were as twins. Two were sufficient to supply my party with local and I refused to catch more, puch to the disappointment of the Indian, who wanted to head the canoe. Every other day after that the Indian, now most respectful in his manner and speech, and I caught from two to three trout. They were the best ash I have ever eaten.
"When I left the region, not having found a copper mine, the Indian begged for the globe, saying: Give it to me. I will cache in the forest. When I want trout I will set it and catch them. No other Indian who lives on the shores of the great lakes can catch these trout out of season. I will be a great man, and may be I will become a chief. At any rate I will be strong medicine. So I gave the globe to him and left one happy savage in the north woods. But I never heard of any chief named Glass Globe or Trout Catcher, so I guess he broke the globe or it got smashed on the roof when a storm raged and the depressions between the waves pitched the globe to strike the rocky reef. He looked at me sharply and again said: "It requires intelligence to catch lake trout, and bullhead luck don't count," and then he went to bed.
I considered that a good and a true story, and I resolved to imitate the acts of my aged comrade. So on the following morning I rigged up a glass sugar bowl, filled it with minnows and anchored it in the lake, and the next day I fished there and never got a bite. I hauled in my bowl and rowed to shore and said nothing about my failure, but I silently denounced my aged comrade as one who exaggerated the successes of his youth.

Moore was one of those who believed in the right of genius to enlarge the borders and kick over the traces at its pleasure. He maintained the doctrine of irresponsibility in action, if not by formal profession, and took care that no sordid considerations of official duties nor lettering shackles of home ties should vex his poetic soul or shorten his moral tether. He did what he liked to do, and he declined to do what he did not like, and he managed to escape opposition to the one and consume for the other.
He was more at his ease anywhere than with wife and children, and he left them on the very smallest provocation—too happy to escape. But we wrote long letters and treasured them.
GRAPE GROWING IN NEW YORK
Chahtanqua County - Has a New Source of Profit.
There has sprung into prominence in the past few years an industry which is very sure to give Chahtanqua county a more extended reputation than has been earned by the products of her dairies, and that is the raising of grapes and the making of wine. The towns of Hanover, Sheridan, Portland, Westfield, Riply and Pomfret for the most part occupy the territory extending back from Lake Erie from one and a half miles to the hills, which geologists say are composed of the debris deposited during the glacial period by the incalculable mass of ice which escaped out the Lake Erie basin. For a good while this level strip of land, usually denominated the "Lake Shora," has been noted for the fruits it raised, but not until a very few years has the grape culture overshadowed all others, while the two seasons preceding the present one were the first when the growers organized and made heavy shipments. This year the grape crop will sell for fully $750,000, and the profit is large. The soil does not have as much to do with the quality of the grapes as the fact that Lake Erie on the north and the high hills on the south serve to keep off, the frosts until late, allowing the fruit to mature slowly, but very perfectly. Since the craze of planting for grapes began, it has been found that land for general agricultural purposes was not worth over $10 or $15 per acre is now a good investment at $100 or more, while whole farms are held at three times that price per acre.
A score of years ago, when a man named Hagris came from England and founded a "community" at Brocton, in the township of Portland, about midway on the Lake Shoro railway from Buffalo to Erie, he saw the adaptability of the region to the culture of the grape, and began a vineyard, which has since become famous, and the reputation of which would have become still more extended but for the disruption of the settlement. But the start made at that time has given Brocton lead in grape growing.

I know that his imagination about bulldog, whatever that may be, referred to a brace of Canada geese the haggaging of which by me involved the loss of a box of Henry Clay engraving on his part, but I declined to come out of my blanket to enter a conversational deadfall that I knew had been prepared for my destruction, so I let theighting remarks pass unnoticed and swineed keen desire to hear the story and to learn how to catch lake trout.
He said: "When I was a young man he is over 70! I spent a season in prospecting for copper mines on the south shore of Lake Superior. With me was a middle age Indian who had spent his life in hunting and fishing and housing in the forests and on the waters of the lake regions. He knew the wilderness thoroughly. He knew where the deer and the moose lived. He knew in which lakes the wild waterfowl could be found, and he knew where trout, peeked and black bass lurked in dark, cold water. He possessed all desirable knowledge relative to the region. One night when we sat by the campfire the Indian was in a talkative, confidential mood. He said: "In that lake, indicating lake superior with a backward tassel of his head," are very large trout. About three miles here there is a reef in the lake where the water is not over fifty feet deep. The trout gather on this reef in large numbers." They are always there, but they will not take the book excepting certain seasons. If you could catch one of these fish you would never again eat a pickeral. Then he told of catching trout on this tree that were from 3 to 4 feet long and that must have weighed from 20 to 30 pounds. Of course I wanted to catch and eat one of these fish. The next day he paired me to the reel. I finished two hours but caught nothing. The Indian apparently was not disappointed, but he resolutely ascertained that he knew that the reel was literally paved with trout. That night as we sat taking at the campfire I thought a plan by whom I hoped to catch some of the fish. The next morning I sent to the settlement for supplies, and in the list of articles needed was a fish globe, and I wrote to my agent to lure me to send me the globe. In due time the globe arrived. I filled it with water, caught a few minnows and put them in it. Then I tried a piece of cloth over its mesh; first pulling one half of the threads so that water could drown in and out. I find a short rope to shank of the globe, and a heavy fish around its neck. To the beach or line the rope I tied a heavy stone for an anchor. I put a short, dry log in the beach and was ready to set my bait. The bait in watched my preparations with silent acorns. Catch trout with a glass jar. The acorns was too abundant to be worthy of a warrior's consideration. The acorns had a low opinion of me below. Respectfully he looked on as an imposant man who poured through the woods to dig the ground, and this when game animals and fish and birds awaived him. But saw I had lost all cattle. He reluctantly placed me and my child traps to the ground. He grazed, pag like when I spoke to him. There is also a pleasure in having a fine garden and other good crops, and good animals too. Indeed, there is more pleasure to be derived from tilting the soil than from any other occupation. There is nothing monotonous about it; it the farmer are ever changing, and there is also a change continually taking place in the garden, field and orchard, and new attractions continually being brought out.
There is fascination in planting and caring for crops. And then what man can spend a day to attend a picnic or entertain company with no little break in his business as the farmer? When the farmer sits down and counts up his blessings ought he not to be the happiest man on earth. Don't let us always look on the dark side, and continually find fault with the weather, or something else beyond our control, but rather let us look about us and we how much happiness we can get out of life and how much of it we can impart to others.

We consult with the Sacramento See in asking that most important subject now before the vineyarders and archivists of this State is in development of a plan be towards insertion of plants that threaten every branch of horticulture with destruction. We accordingly hope that the archivists would realize vast and commute importance of this subject. They could well afford to drop considerations of everything from now until the meeting of their State convention at Chance on November 24th. If the convention should do nothing more than agree upon a definite and substantial plan of campaign against the poets, it will have done more for the agricultural interests of California than ever a convention did before. The Sloe interest in matter is merely interest that it takes in the welfare and development of the State. That is surely impulse and motive enough to insure the highest effect. It is to be hoped that every fruitgrower we attracts the convention will manifest keen interest in the solution of this paradoxal problem with which our fruitgrowers have to deal. The Bor has more than once outlined a plan for the examination of the poets, but the question need not be one of plans. We have no hobby except to get at the destroying insects in the most effective way. We should hate to see good energy wasted in sale effort or half way meanarea, for we have had plenty of that already. Whatever is done or whatever plan is agreed upon must be vigorous. The caribbean grower must not be permitted to jeopardize his neighbors and perhaps a whole district. There ought to be a law to reach him, or at least to protect his innocent neighbor. We know of two orchards in Narrauntoo county, one of which is owned by an enterprising energetic careful grower and by a caribbean sloppy fellow. The latter's trees are inflicted with the destroying sails and he makes no effort to free them from ravages. Only a fence divides the archids. The wines of this State are a very different kind of article from what they were twenty years ago. At that time they had little or no standing amongst connoisseurs and were but in little favor by general consumers. Although for years before, or as early as 1863, Perkus & Sterna had gone extensively into the business and started cellars and sales rooms in New York, the market for them in the East was very limited. In 1864 it was useless to ask for California wines at any of the first-class hotels, and many otherwise well-informed landlords were utterly ignorant that wine was a production of our State. About ten years afterward the late Don Mateo Keller spent a great deal of time in the East, and succeeded in making a very favorable impression with his samples of Los Angeles wines. Mr. L. J. Rose, also, about or prior to that time, had established Eastern agencies, and the wines of Sunny Slope Vineyard were in demand. When Mr. Keller returned here, the wine interest took on a healthy condition, and from that time on the market for our vintages has increased not only at the East but in Europe.
The reason that California wines have been so slow in gaining recognition is simple. At first all our vineyards were planted with a single variety of grape—the Mission. The trouble with the wine produced from that grape was two-fold. First, it was too potent; and, second, it had a repelling earthy flavor. Perhaps this was not so much the

The suite of apartments occupied by Emperor William at the Quirinal Palace in Rome, although it comprises some of the finest rooms in the building looked on anything but an agreeable prospect. But, with the thoroughness which has marked the whole proceedings of the King of Italy in connection with this memorable visit of his ally, it was quickly determined that the outlook must be altered so to make it attractive to the German Emperor. The aid of a famous landscape gardener was therefore called in, an army of workmen placed at his disposal, and carte blanche given him so far as expense was concerned and in a week the most astonishing change had been affected. By a veritable tour de force the whole prospect from the Emperor's windows had been changed. High walls had been pulled down, stables and outhouses demolished, and at least one rather large dwelling-house altogether removed. The ground having been cleared, the most enchanting garlands were improvised on the site with swelling banks of turf, flower-painted Kullowa, sparkling fountains, and I know not what beside. The Romans who witnessed the transformation scene which had been so quickly arranged regarded it as a well-nigh miraculous change. So far then, so good. If William II had then to look out of the window at all—and this is doubtful, seeing how busy he was during his visit—he could not fail to have been charmed by the scene which met his eyes. But the chief of the personal police, who had accompanied the German Emperor, was not so delighted with the arrangement at first. He had arrived in Rome the day before his imperial master, and he naturally asked, in view of rumored dynamic plots, to be allowed to minutely examine that part of the Quirinal William II was to occupy, and also the neighborhood immediately surrounding the palace. His surprise may be imagined when, in the coats of his investigations in the ground beneath the Emperor's window, he found active evidence of excavations and tunneling and all the rest of it. But the California wines have another very serious difficulty to contend with, and we fear that this is one which only time and correct judgment, if not home pride, can care; and that is the capidity of the dealers, who find that they can make quicker sales at higher prices, of our own wines when falsely labeled as Chateau Margaux or some other well known French brand. Thus, whilst California wines are really extending their market and being more widely consumed, they are doing so under false colors, and adding no prestige to our own vintages. When we shall have succeeded in making California wines popular as such, and not as a foreign brand, the interest will become one of mammoth proportions. That they are gradually asserting themselves nearly can deny. In all the best hotels in the country they are found on the wine cards, and the family stores, which was formally conned to—French brands, is now largely composed of vintages from our State.
No part of California can produce a better or more acceptable quality of wine than Los Angeles county. Our capacity for production is increasing annually, and our tablwes, especially are becoming more sought after every year. It is well known that some of our wines have been coated by a kind of sickness latter which has called up vigorous and caused considerable trouble. But notwithstanding this trouble,the wine stop this year will be larger than any previous season. In the mean time new vinecals are being constantly set out, and the time is not far distant when our wines will form a factor in our industries far more valuable than any other article produced.
If our temperatures reformers would try to induce the people to substitute our mild wines as a beverage in place of the fiery liquids which steal away their brain they would accomplish a great purpose on the principle they advocate, and materially aid to the value of one of our most important and promising industries.

If the association will honestly carry out the ideas expressed in its circular there is no doubt that the advice, suggestions and information which can be given to the fruit grower will result in better goods and increased profit—and the fact must never be lost sight of that unless an industry is on a profitable basis there need be no hope of its permanent development. But if the Exchange to be established is simply to be another gambling institution, like the Coffee Exchange of New York, where goods are not actually sold and bought by legitimate tradesmen, but where practically, bets are simply made by outside parties upon future prices, then this association will simply be a curve to the fruit grower, the dealer and honest people generally. If the Exchange, on the other hand, remains entirely in the control of business men, and continues all its business to bona file purchases and sales of goods, it will, no doubt, prove beneficial to all.
