The Weekly Gazette. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. Merry Kuchan, Chardine Kuchan, Kervens and Parnisma. THURSDAY AUGUST 9, 1856. The Santa Ana Standard has the following political item: The candidate for Supervisor for the district we believe comes from Anaheim so that as a matter of polling his campaign or should come from there in order to avoid local paralysis. So with the Assembly, an if a local fight is to be avoided and the fall party vote polled in this valley boast or additions should come from the same place. Herefore there have been too much social feeling and not enough principle displayed in the election of candidates in this valley and it behooves both parties to agree similar contents hereafter. We understand the "local feeling" will be done away with by the convention, and Santa Ana given the Democratic nominee for Assemblyman, while Anaheim will be given the Supervince. As a matter of fact Anaheim is entitled to the office, the Supervince in this district having been residents of the south side of the river for ten years past. It is proper that different sections in turn be given the office. That is what Anaheim is after, it makes no difference where the affluence go. Fire completion of the California Central Railroad is an important enterprise for the entire Southern portion of the State, and will be apprehably felt in Anaheim. Bringing San Diego within four hours of Los Angeles, the business interests of the two communities will be more closely allied than in the past. San Diego will be the destination of ocean freight killed for Los Angeles and this section. What with the high rate of insurance which vessels are bound to pay at San Pedro, shippers will naturally turn to the safer and more open roadstead. Being upon the mainline between Los Angeles and San Diego, Anaheim will reap the benefit along with its neighbors. Junior St. Kuskey, the most experienced and in many respects the most capable member of the Sacramento Bench, has resigned in order to accept the position of President of Hastings Law College. Two years of the term for which he was elected remain unexecuted, and a successor will have to be selected in November. The Republican convention cabin is 10x12 feet, and has been carefully taken apart. Two picks, shovel and roster which Manley said at the time of his competition of Pan cabin will also be shown. The cabin brake kept in good repair by the people of Alleghany City as a matter of interest. SHERIDAN DEAD The Merge of Winchester suddenly Panneau Army General Sheridan died at Nonquitt, Mass., at 10:20 o'clock on Sunday night. Previous to the sudden appearance of heart failure at about 9:20 in the evening there had been no premonitions of an unfavorable change in his condition. The weather had been warmer than usual, and the General was at times a little restless, but seemed generally bright and cheerful. His voice was strong; he took a fall supply of nourishment, sleeps commonly as nasal, and the doctors and his family were in hospital spirits. At 7 o'clock Mrs. Sheridan and the doctors went to the hotel for supper and moon after their return the usual preparations for the night were made. At about 9:20, Colonel Sheridan and "good-night" to his brother, and want to be to the hotel, there having been through the day no negation whatever of any unfavorable change in his condition. At 9:30 symptoms of heart failure suddenly appeared and Doctors O'Reilly and Matthews, who were with him, immediately applied the remedy, which proved successful in all similar previous attacks but that time they were without effect and despite all that could be done, the General gradually smok into a condition of complete anorectism and at 10:20 breathed last. Mrs. Sheridan, Natura Urban and Justinian and a faithful lady servant were also at his bedside throughout the dying hour. All through Sunday General Sheridan had been in unusually good spirits, laughing, chatting with his brother and members of the family. At 7:20 Dr. Matthews said the General was doing so well there would probably be no ballistins issued during the week. After dinner, at the hotel, Mrs. Sheridan carried down to the General's large aloe of reat beef, which he ate with apparent relish. He dressed off during the afternoon, but awoke to not supper, then went to sleep again. The unfavorable symptoms made their appearance so unexpertly, and were so rapid in their development that the children were around barely in time to take a last look at their dying father. With the General at the death bed were Mrs. Sheridan, Mary Louise, Irenea Philip, the children; Col. Sheridan, his mother, with his wife and matra; Justinian and Urban; and Doctors O'Reilly and Matthews. Mrs. Sheridan and nurses were on their knees in prayer as the General's spirit departed. At 2 a.m. the embalmers were in possession of the body. As illustrative of the confidence felt by Mrs. Sheridan in the ultimate recovery of the news in Brief Senator Farwell has introduced a bill give Mrs. Sheridan a position of $5,000. There is a movement at Riverside to videotee the committee of San Diego and Bermudian. San Diego's amendment is said to be no dredge last year. Two large rattlemakim were killed on steps of church at Barnehack, Los Angeles county, last Sunday morning. John Sheridan, a hod carrier, was run over and killed by a street car in Los Angeles Friday evening last. His wife died of pneumonia on Saturday. San Diego is to hold an election to decide upon the imminent bond to purchase water works system by which the town supplied with water. Maxwell, the St. Louis murderer, will hanged to mourrow, the request of the Kashah Government for a reprise in his own hearing proven unavailing. Colorow, the Indian chief, with whom th Colorado militia had so much trouble about a year ago, in again off his reservations. The warnings for the California Southern Railroad for the first week of July announced to $29,475, an increase of $7,080 over the same period last year. For the month June the earnings were $129,682, an increase of $30,915. Recent sudden changes in the world have had the effect of suddenly developing pleno-pneumonia among cattle in and about New York. In West Chambers county Bureau of Animal Industry has ordered destruction of over two hundred head. San Francisco is in a quandary on account of a large shortage in her school uniforms is charged that the emma-taker was pointed through a political job, and was competent and narcissus in his work. A grand banquet in honor of Arped Hathaway book place last Thursday evening at Paneau Hall, San Franciemay. Mr. Harmann is a vine grower and wine maker of national reputation. Some few months ago Mr. Harmann was succeeded as president of commission by M. M. Eaton, who now poses that important position, and in order to show their estimation of his services he wont tendered a banquet. On the summons of the opening of the Southern Pacific branch line to Santa Barbara a citizen of that place named Davenport was heard to declare that he would be killed by the first train that ran into the Net very much attention was paid to this time. When the first passenger marry an excursion party was dashed, he went out where the line crosses the entrance upon entering city limits and laid down upon this track. The train did its part by coming along on time, but instead of being killed Jinog M. Kisneray, the most experienced and in daily respects the most capable member of the Supreme Bench, has resigned in order to accept the position of President of Hastings Law College. Two years of the term for which he was elected remain unexpected, and a successor will have to be elected in November. The Republican convention nominated Judge S. D. Works of San Diego, who enjoys an enviable reputation as a sound jurist and an honorable man. It is said that Judge J. F. Sullivan will be nominated by the Democratic State Central Committee, Judge Beatty has been nominated to oppose Niles Barries for the Chief Justicehip. In the retirement of Judge McKinstry from the bench of the highest appellate court, the judiciary of the State suffers an irreparable loss. He has served so long, has so thoroughly mastered the history of California's legal complications, and withal is so able a man that we can hardly hope to succeed in giving him a successor in all respects his equal. In fact, we fear that the Supreme Court is likely to deteriorate until the Constitution is amended in such a way as to rename the payment of adequate salaries to the Judges possible. It was a mistake to hire the compensation of the Supreme Judges at the present figures. The very ablest, most experienced and ripe lawyers at the bar might to deem an election to the Supreme Court not only promotion, but the object of their interest ambition. That will not happe until the present grossly inadequate pay is very largely increased. It is anomalous that the treasury of a law school should be more tempting than the Chief Justiceship of the State. The present Emperor of Germany has inaugurated his reign by what the late President Johnson would have designated "swirling around the circle" of his royal contemporaries, but whether the latter portion of his tour is anything more than a blind to cover up the serious nature of his visit to the Qatar may well be doubted. "God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform," and so do these deeply appointed Kings and Emperors and their diplomatic heenmen. One result of this imperial hobnobbing has been the usance by the Unspeakable Turk of an Imperial Trade ordering the Minister of Marine to renovate the somewhat obsolete ironclad ships, and to order four new powerful vessels of the latest type and four torpedo boats. The estimated expenditure required to obey this order is 200,000,000. Meanwhile the Porte has been obliged to return to the Ottoman Bank for financial assistance. Within she last few weeks France and Italy have done most the quarrelling in the European happy family. Italy has no love for France. The latter Power helped her to Lambardy, but took Savoy as a fee; kept her out of Rome until the Franco-German War opened the way for Victor Emanuel's march upon the Holy City crowded her in With the approach of warm weather it was decided by his physicians, after several consultations, that the patient must be removed, as he would utter unable in his weakened state to withstand a period of prolonged heat. Accordingly, on Saturday, June 30th, he was taken to Noquit. The General had made his will and all preparations for death, and was ready to face it, though resolutely determined that life should not be given up without a severe carried down to the General's large alms at reentreat heat, which he ate with apparent relish. He dosed off during the afternoon, but awoke to eat supper, then went to sleep again. The unfavorable symptoms made their appearance so unexpertly, and were so rapid in their development that the children were around barely in time to take a last look at their dying father. With the General at the death bad were Mrs. Sheridan, Mary, Lonnie, Irene and Philip, the children; Cel. Sheridan, his mother, with his wife and mates; Justimia and Urban, and Doctors O'Reilly and Matthew. Mrs. Sheridan and nurses were on their knees in prayer as the General's spirit departed. At 2 A.M., the embalmers were in possession of the body. As illustrative of the confidence felt by Mrs. Sheridan in the ultimate recovery of the husband, only a few days ago she sent to Chicago money to pay off a small mortgage on real estate owned by the General in that city, and that she had made some preliminary arrangements with a view to the permanent removal of the General from Nonquit early in September, fearing the cold winds of autumn might retard his speedy restoration to health. During Sunday the General had not seemed much worse, but rather realities and nervosa. In the morning his couch was whealed to the window and he looked long and earnestly at the same grown so familiar to him for the last time. Not the slightest deviation from the routine of life at the cottage was made. Symptoms of the final attack of dreaded heart failure appeared at 9:30, and at 10:20 the gallant soldier breathed his last. When the doctors declared him dead Mrs. Sheridan could not believe it. She took him by the shoulder, implored him to recognize her, but in vain, and as the cruel truth forced itself upon her devoted wife overwrought by the culmination of her sorrow, tell to the floor. The Senate and House adjourned on Monday out of respect for General Sheridan; and flags are displayed on both public and private buildings everywhere. It has been decided that the General shall be buried in the Arlington national memorial at Washington on Sunday. A special funeral train left Nonquit yesterday for the national capital. Sheridan repeatedly expressed strong dislike of display in funerals and in accordance with his wish and those of Mrs. Sheridan, the ceremonies in Washington will be as simple as possible. The funeral, however, will of course be a military one. The illness which has just resulted in Gen. Sheridan's death commenced on the 12th of May last, immediately after his return from a tour of inspection out West. He complained of feeling unwell and worn out, but came down to his office each day for about a week. He was then forced to remain indoors, and on Tuesday, May 22nd, he had a severe attack of heart failure which greatly alarmed his family and physicians. On Friday of the week ending May 26th he had several attacks of heart failure, and these increased in violence with each succeeding attack. Several times during his illness it seemed as if life had become extinct, but by adoption of radical measures the action of the heart was stimulated and he was brought around again. His heart at one time ceased to beat for a few seconds, but the extraordinary watchfulness and care of the attending physicians brought him back to consciousness again. New complications set in, and hope was well-high abandoned several times, only to be renewed by the great vitality and determination shown by the stricken soldier. The history of these relapses and recoveries are familiar to our readers. With the approach of warm weather it was decided by his physicians, after several consultations, that the patient must be removed, as he would utter unable in his weakened state to withstand a period of prolonged heat. The unfavorable symptoms made their appearance so unexpertly, and were so rapid in their development that important position, and in order show their estimation of his services he was tendered a banquet. On the session of the opening of this Southern Pacific branch line to Santa Barbara a citizen of that place named Davenport was heard to declare that he would be killed by the first train that ran into the city time. When the first passenger carrying an excommion party was dasa, he went en route where the line crosses the entrance upon entering the city limits and laid down upon track. The train did its part by coming along on time, but instead of being killed on he had hoped. Dover was only knocked off on the track minus one arm. Upon recovery he mad company for damages, and this case was tried on Tuesday. Upon a faint if fast, Dover was non-suited and then thrown out of court. The sensational story printed in a New York paper asserting positively that Hon Samuel J. Ramsdell has cancer of the stomach and cannot live, has commissioned great indignation on all hands at Washington. M Randall's friends and all those in position know anything as to the truth or falsity this report denounces it as scandalous and false. Randall's physicians positively deny the story that he has cancer of the stomach They say he is afflicted with organic disease The nature of which they are refuse to close He has been very sick for three years without knowing it. They are unable to say whether he will fully recover. The doctors evidently believe Randall will never re-enter public life. He will be moved to Wayne Junction, Pa., in a few days if his strength admits. NEW ADVERTISING. BAKING POWDER Absolutely Pure. Election Notice. Italy has no love for France. The latter Power helped her to lambardy, but took Savoy as a fee; kept her out of Rome until the Franco-German War opened the way for Victor Emanuel's march upon the Holy City; crowded her in North Africa, and now opposes her designs in Abyssinia. Italy is inferior to France in population and military development, but she has made great advances of late years, and has the backing of Germany and her old oppressor, Austria. A war between the two Powers would probably draw in the rest of Europe. It is a very peppery quarrel that is raging in the female suffrage party between those ladies who support the nomination of Mrs. Balva Rockwood and those who oppose her. Some of them speak of others in barrms that are astounding to calm observers outside of their ranks and we feel it our duty to give them a warning that ought to be heeded. Take, for example, the racy letter from Mrs. N. Sanford Chapin of Marshalltown, Iowa, Chairwoman of the Executive Committee of Mrs. Balva Lockwood's Presidential campaign. It was red pepper, ground fine and unadulterated. A look at it is enough to scare a man. There was a sting of peculiar sharpness in the words which she applied to the ladies of the female suffrage party, who stand aloft from her candidate, or take the attitude of opposition. Think of the scorn that is concentrated in such terms as "featherheads," and "old tabbies," and "fossile," and so forth, with which she designated them. Look at the cutting sentences whose sharpness is intensified by such words. If the angry disputants can stand this sort of thing, the outside observers cannot. We must, with due courtesy, ensure the ladies who indulge in it. When women enter the political field they should not an example of high style and gentle manner to the sterner sex. On the shape of Gettyburgh and the fatal fields of Shilch the bird sing and the farmer tilts the soil. The signs of change are everywhere upon every moment of that stormy time but one. The freedom which the union armies gave the land—their memorial—shanda superior he all decayed, and so the rear guard of those armies vanished will serve to keep the American men whatever forms may arise, regardless of their lives and death. Hamlet's name: "how men we are forgetting," has no point nor meaning so far as the union dead are announced; for while the republicate late and the establishment of patriotic dominion it their fame will not only survive but grow grimmer with the years.
