PICNICKING AT THE BEACH Excursion to San Juan by the Sea. Ancient Church at Capistrano - Picurque Route - Fifty Miles an Hour - An Enjoyable Time Noten. Twelve coachloads of excursionists passed Sandy at San Juan by the sea. Two hundred Anaheimers waited expectantly at the Orange-street depot for the coming of the train which would give them the novel ride. Old-timers talked of days when they traveled through the San Juan valley and joined on over the dusty hills to San Diego. In those days thousands of cattle roamed everywhere, and the trip beside being one of extreme discomfort, was attended with anger such as the old timer loves to devil upon. On one hand could be heard stories of dangers encountered with maddened longhorned alces, and on the other of empty canteens and parched lips and the deceptive mirage on the broad and sunburnt valleys. Some of the excursionists had not been in the San Juan valley in twenty years and looked forward to the trip, with particular zeal. Many were well provided with lunch baskets and all were the happiest of expressions. Leaving here at 8:45, the train soon reached Orange and halted half an hour to await the San Bernardino excursionists. At 9:30 the train started for the seashore, halting at the various stations to pick up passengers and arriving at the beach shortly after 11. At Capistrano a half hour was given 12 airtimes. Everybody required to the old Mission church, which was soon surrounded by such a crowd of people as has solden been seen within the premises of the edifice. Adventures youths climbed upon the top of broken walls and saffron is touristed carved initials in the rapidly decaying stone. The old church, not exactly beautiful in its decoration, is nevertheless an object of much interest to visitors at Capistrano. The imposing archways and columns seemed to frown down upon the multitude. Could the ancient palace pass forth from their confined clay and listen to the murky laugh and joy of sightseers, to the moan of the trunk in the very sample of their power, and see the mysteries as any one, but his pleasure was marred by the loss of a gold cuff button, which he had had for many years. General Agent McElvaine and Trammerer J. H. Lewis of the California Central were uniting in their efforts to see that all were entertained. At Capistrano the proper thing was to pay respects to M. Mendelso, the popular proprietor of the hotel. COMPANY O'S SURPRISE Presented With a Large Silk Flag by the Ladies. The Tyrolaers were presented with a large and handsome silk flag on Tuesday evening at the residence of A. Goldthwaite, the donors being members of the Ladies' Social Circle and Leap Year Club. It had been whispered for some time that the company had a surprise in store for them at the hands of the ladies, but few imagined what the outcome would be as they marched at a little after 8 o'clock to the residence of Mr. Goldthwaite, where the company had been invited to join in a lawn social. Arriving upon the scene, the company was put through the various manuvers and manual of arms. Trees were plentifully hung with Japanese lanterns, giving a very pretty effect. A large concourse of ladies and gentlemen had gathered to witness the presentation. After the company had been ordered to parade rest, Mrs. Lewis addressed the soldiers, and in a capital speech donated them an elegant silk flag on behalf of the ladies of the Leap Year Club and Social Circle. Immediately after the presentation the ladies sang "The Star-Spangled Banner," and then Captain Wood in indictious remarks accepted the flag for the company. Three cheers were then given for the ladies. To add to the astonishment of all, it was announced the surprise was not yet complete, and that refreshments awaited those present in the summer house hard by. Due respect was paid to the collation and then the company was formed again and Dr. Carhart called upon to respond to "The Stars and Stripes." The Doctor responded in usual pleasant manner. Captain Wood and Lieutenants Gale and Lewis spoke briefly, returning thanks for the beautiful present. Corporal Brown responded to "The Ladies in his happy vein; and Sergeant Pellegrin proved what an admirable extemporaneous speaker he is." Cheers were given again for the gentle donors, and the amiable host and hostess. Mr. Goldthwaite was numbled at being called upon for a speech, but responsied in a truly silver-tongued effort. The company were drilled again, and shortly marched homeward, every one singing "Rally Round the Flag." 4rd of Thanks. Some parts of the edifice are still in preservation. The winnowed mire, where lumps of holy water were free to those who came, the crumbling auditorium where the faithful breathed the incense of sweet and sacred spices, the hollow still in their archway hung, the stately altar place and chancel tail, where ancient palettes softly sang the甘yam, still resisted the elements and carry one back intuitively a hundred years. by the Sea everything was given up to enjoyment. A presuppositional dessert was made upon the lunch counters by those who were indifferent enough to neglect taking meals with them. Many enjoyed gourd balling and pronanading on the beach. In the afternoon the pavilion was crowded with dancers, who tripped the light fantastic until leaving time. The principal engagement, however, was had by those who carried lunch baskets with them. Anaheim lunch baskets are proverbial for their good things and the baskets on Sunday fell not a whist short of the good things expected of them. Cold shaken and turkey, ravishing salads and all the rest were devoured with appetites whetted by the salt sea breaze. Abundant entertainment had been provided by General Agent McElvaine of the California Central and all were loud in their praise of his management of the excursion. COMING HOME The excursion left the seashore at 3 o'clock, and was pulled slowly through the valley on the return trip. At Capistrano a passing glance was given the ancient church, which "time and the enemy" have land such heavy hands upon. Seen the San Joaquin valley was reached, through which the road runs in almost an air line. At Aliso station the engine entered upon a ten-inch tangent. Engineer Dave Poole determined to show the excursionists how rapidly his engine could travel. The throttle valve was thrown open and the iron horse dashed into the tangent. The train sped on at the rate of fifty miles an hour. The road was unusually smooth for one so lately constructed. Some speculation was occasioned as to the rate of speed the engine attained. From the locomotive, however, a look at the lengthy train of cars was enough to decide the question. The rear cars could not be seen. They were enveloped in dust, and clouds of real estate rose high in air and stretched far behind. The connecting rods between the ponderous drive wheels were indulatingishable. A shimmering sheen of burnished steel was all that could be seen where the polished rods described their circuit. Orange Junction was reached in a little over an hour from San Juan. Here the train was broken and the Anaheim excursionists hated good-by to the San Bernardino contingent. The train arrived here shortly before 5 o'clock. NOTES Pen James enjoyed the excursion as much NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS. One of the Happenings of the Week. FULLERTON PRAGMENTS. Improvements Grading, terminated shipments of Wine. School is being L. Browning's building, he farmbear that purpose free of charge. Bainyer is having a house built on east of town and will shortly erect the purchase of Wm. Wald's ranch, Mr. Walde got a magnificent piece of propulsion has started in to improve it. Then the lembar and other freight for Santa Ana, Orange, Anaheim, Pomona, Spadra, Ontario and San Bernardino will be carried through on this road; open up a new country and relieve the Los Angeles and San Pedro road. Quite a number of our people availed themselves of a cheap ride on the excursion to San Juan-by-the Sun on last Sunday. P. Hassen and wife, Hugo Wetzel and wife John Wagner and wife, Mrs. Della Paddertz, Arthur Staley and Mimi Myrtle Staley and Gay Tombes were among those who enjoyed this first excursion on the Santa Fe road. The headers are at work taking off the wallfilled heads of grain on the ramach of the Krasner Bros. and J. K. Tuffree's ranch. They will soon be followed up by the threshing machines. Several hay balers are at work timing up the hundreds of tons of hay that has been raised here in excess of the local demand. Mrs. J. R McCallough has gone to Del Mar, San Diego county; to join her husband who is in business at that place. She will be absent for three or four weeks. Her father, Mr. Bishop, will take care of their home in her absence. From letters received from the East we are led to believe that the immigration to Southern Californias this coming fall will be greater than ever before known. Let us receive them kindly; locate as many of them as we can; but not digust them by inducing them to go into speculation and cause them to lose their money. The town-lot craze of last year will do us an injustice for several years; although the excitement was gotten mostly by "tenderfest" themselves. George Hinde and John Wagner have each added a cost of paint to their houses which has improved their appearance greatly. BUENA PARK Items of Interest - Church and Literary Society - Harvest. Editor Gazette.—In our quiet little burg everything is progressing slowly but surely and permanently. Some improvements are going on most all the time. One of the most prominent is an addition to Avery & Everhardy's slaughter-house and a large tank over their artesian well. The tank is seven feet high and yet there is force of water from the well to flow over the top of it. The gap in the railroad at this place is being rapidly closed up and I was informed by the graders this morning that they would complete the job this evening or to-morrow before noon. But the road has missed us. It has gone away off, about 2,000 feet north of us nearly to the old Los Angeles road; Kleinigkeiten. Corn is looking splendidly about Westminster and Garden Grove. Anaheim Homestead Trust; to J.W. Keith of Los Angeles; consideration $2,000. Tegraph Operator Bates' special bulletins from the Chicago convention; posted in his office window; were eagerly read by all. Regular Sunday excursions will be run by the California Central from Anaheim and all points on their line to San Juan-by-the-fisca. Orange is to have an old-time Fourth of July celebration. It is time that the plan for our festivities were beginning to take form. The people of Orange are discussing the advisability of turning the newly constructed Hotel Rochester into an institution of learning. A short time ago a fisherman captured a shark at San Mateo Point; several miles below San Juan. A human skull and boot were found in its stomach. Mr. Spoerl, the gunsmith, won $15 in the last drawing of the Louisiana lottery, and Thomas Johnson, a laborer; succeeded in winning $10 in a like manner. Hearing of the petition for sale of realty and probate of will of Louisa Keller was set for yesterday in Judge Gardiner's department of the Superior Court. There will be a picnic at the Landing on the Fourth. One of the attractions will be a match game of ball. Efforts are being made to get the Los Angeles club to play the Westminsters. Attention is called to the advertisement of the Anaheim Bakery; where beat bread; pies and cakes are always on hand. A delivery wagon makes trips throughout the city. But the road has missed us. It has gone away off, about 2,000 feet north of us, nearly to the old Los Angeles road; but then we expect to make up for our distance from the railroad by swindling ye editors out of your hard-earned money advertising our town, but as I have not heard you equal yet I am afraid you have not been stuck deep enough. If you haven't, please call around, for we are just the chaps that can do it; but if Mr. Whitaker gets away with you for a few dollars please don't jump on me about it, for it is all I can do to back up my own meanness. But I suppose we all have erazy spells and say silly things we might not sometimes, but if we get billions by imbibing too much bug juice we must have the bile worked off some way. The Sunday school is very interesting and well attended. There is preaching in the hall every two weeks by Mr. Goodsell of Westminster. The Literary Society is also in a flourishing condition and highly interesting. The Buena Park Softies (the organ of the society) is edited every two weeks by Miss Cox and one of the most interesting features of the society. Crops of all kinds have been excellent. Large quantities of hay have been cut in this vicinity. Hickox Brothers are now baling for Mr. Whitaker. Mr. Strong, on the western border of the town, is now stacking his second cutting of alfalfa hay. Mr. House's store of berries which he set out last spring, is looking splendidly and he expects a good crop next year. In fact everything that has been planted here and properly cared for is doing well. June 19th. Occasionally. RAILROAD BUILDING California Central Line to San Diego Almost completed. Not more than four miles of track remain to be laid to make the connection of the California Central in San Diego county. Bridges have been constructed over San Mateo and San Onofre creeks and the Las Flores river. Forces are working night and day bridging two barrancas, each about ninety feet deep and a hundred-feet wide near San Mateo point. This work will be completed probably in a week, making a through line to San Diego from this point. The fence working from Los Angeles are building the bridge at New river, which will be completed in a few days. About nine miles of track remain to be laid between New river and the point where tracklaying stopped near Buena Park. Grading at the latter place was completed yesterday afternoon.
