EVENTS OF THE WEEK.
How the Railroads Are Getting Along
Some Questions Asked at Our School Examination: The Tourists The Grand Army Encampment.
About eight miles of track remain at present to be laid between here and Los Angeles. Some heavy grading is yet to be done near Beauna Park, to which point track is laid from this end. While waiting upon the graders at work upon this piece of roadbed, the force of track layers are burying themselves surfacing the track, completing sidetracks, putting in culverts and sidings. The entire road is being made ready for traffic. Track on the Los Angeles end of the road has not yet been laid on this side of Old river, pilots having a few days' labor before them at that point. From the bridge at Old river nearly two miles of road intervene to the crossing at New river, where another halt will be necessary. By the time that the latter bridge is completed, however, it is probable that the entire track will have been laid on the route, and with the completion of the bridge the first through train will be ready to make its regular trip. At San Mateo and Las Pieces, in San Diego county, bridge builders are at work and nesting completion of their labor. Between these two latter points some ten inches remain to be supplied with iron. The page of road will be given attention by next week, when the gang of tracklayers here will complete everything between here and San Diego. The road will probably be open for business by July 1st, or shortly thereafter. All stations on the line have been located and tickets and time cards are being printed. Between San Juan Capistrano and Los Angeles Junction, where the new line joins the California Southern two miles below Oceanand, a level track without a station for a distance of twenty-five miles will enable some lively time to be made. Following is a list of the stations and their distance from Los Angeles, those marked "F" being flag stations: Los Angeles; Ballena; 2.1 miles; Laguna (F) 7.4; Ravera; 10.5; Santa Fe Springs; 13.2; Ruena

Mallroad Work The St. Mary Lighted With Gas Other New From our Regular Correspondent.
EDITOR GARETTTE.-The coming of railroad here furnishes me with an almost inexhaustible fund of matter to write about. Last week the tracklayers put in a long track here, which has been continually filled and refilled with material for the road.
Wednesday the whole force, however, drew to a portion of the road below Juan. I was informed that they were soon return. The crossing of the Cop Creek flat has proved to be more of a than was at first calculated on, the groove being too wet and "mushy," so "enlobed" had to be resorted to temporarily. An agent, which fortunately was not attendee less of life, occurred last week on the just west of the Santa Ana river. We pushing a heavily loaded train of cars, foremost care became uncoupled, ran abruptly as they were going into a swale, throttle which a makeshift track has been laid, on the engine catching up with the runaway shock broke off the pilot of the engine and broke a drawhead of a boxcar. The outfall was the almost upsetting of the locomotive, which had to be sent to the shops repairs.
Last Friday night witnessed the trial gas machine at the St. George Hotel. The lower floor only was lighted and on following night a further trial of the whole house was made and proved a grand success brilliantly illuminating the entire building. Two hundred and fourteen jets were lighted and night in the near vicinity turned to day.
Messrs. P. J. des Granges & Co. have been rushed the past week or so. The erection of the engine house for the town water works and a large barn for V. A. Browning be came already opened.
The contractor for the two-story brick block, opposite the St. George, will have large force of men on this week and push a building to completion.

here and San Diego. The road will probably be open for business by July 1st, or shortly thereafter. All stations on the line have been located and tickets and time cards are being printed. Between San Juan Capistrano and Los Angeles Junction, where the new line joins the California Southern two miles below Oceanade, a level track without a station for a distance of twenty-five miles will enable some lively time to be made. Following is a list of the stations and their distance from Los Angeles, those marked "F" being flag stations: Los Angeles; Ballona, 2.1 miles; Laguna (F), 7.4; Revera, 10.3; Santa Fe Springs, 13.2; Buena Park (F), 9.5; Fullerton, 23.9; Anaheim, 26.7; Orange, 31.5; Santa Ana, 34.3; Noise (P), 42.1; Nielsen (F), 42.9; Aliso, 47.2; Capistrano (F), 56.3; San Juan, 58.2; Los Angeles Junction, 83.1; Oceanade, 85.1; San Diego, 127.
D. McCool of the California Central Railroad, now in San Francisco, speaking regarding recent operations by his company, said a few days ago: "The work of construction is approaching completion, and we shall soon have a rail between Los Angeles and San Diego, that is sixty miles shorter than any existing routes. All told there are about twenty trains of rail yet to lay, and when these are down and the bridge across the Las Flores river has been completed, the road will be ready for operation. It is now believed that we will have all the work done by July 1st, and that trains will be running by the 15th."
Grading on the Anaheim and Olinda Railroad is completed with the exception of a short strip through which right of way has not as yet been secured. Important developments on this route are looked for in the near future. The road will be graded to the ocean, work to commence by July 1st. If no unforeseen obstacles intervee the Landing branch will be graded in a month, when the route will be graded through Sequim Canyon and completed to Pomona. It is probable that when the route is graded to the ocean active operations will be taken to lay track and put the road in active operation.

Commander Brooker Issues a Circular Letter.
Colonel John Brooker of Artesis, Commander of the G.A.R. Encampment to meet at the Landing in August, has issued a circular letter of which the following is a copy. It will be found interesting to our readers, as the information it contains is from headquarters. Colonel Brooker is assured that the encampment will be attended by thousands of people, as it takes place during the month when the beach is thronged with campers. Grand Army posts will be in attendance from the entire Inspection District: HAIDERS FIRST ANNUAL ENCAMPMENT, FIRST INSPECTION DISTRICT.
DEPT OF CALIFORNIA, G.A.R., ARTESIA, CAL., JANE 1888.
On the 17th day of May last a meeting was held at Anaheim for the purpose of arranging for a reunion encampment of G.A.R. posts some time during the summer. Accredited delegates were present from Sedgwick Post, No. 17, of Santa Ana; W.R.Corman Post, No. 57, of San Bernardino; Shiloh Post, No. 60, of Compton; Malvern Hill Post, No. 131, of Anaheim; Gordon Granger Post, No. 138, of Orange; Dan Bidwell Post, No. 140, of Norwalk, and McBowell Camp, S.of V.A.Santa Ana. The results of the meeting were as follows: It was agreed that the posta represented at the meeting should go into camp at Anaheim Landing for ten days, commencing August 14th and ending August 234; that such encampment should be designated as the First Annual Encampment, Seventh Inspection District, Department of California, G.A.R., Officers for the encampment were elected as follows: Commander, John Broker, Dan Bidwell Post; Senior Commander, C.E.Berry, Gordon Granger Post; Junior Commander, T.L.Cummins, McDowell Camp, S.of V.; Chaplain,Rav.Gae.A.Iryin,Malvern Hill Post; Quartermaster,L.Ball,Sedgwick Post. The Commander was directed to invite the Department Commander and staff to be present during the encampment, and to issue a circular letter to the Posts comprising the Seventh Inspection District and to the Woman's Relief Corps and camps of S.of V.theren, explaining the objects of the encampment and urging them to be present, to the end that a permanent organization may be then effected, rules adopted for its government, and a place selected and officers chosen for the next encampment.
In obedience to the above instructions, the undersigned issues this circular letter, and earnestly requests that all posta corps and camps in this inspection district will accept the invitation in the same spirit of fraternity with which it is tendered.
The object of the encampment is to furnish the comrades and their friends a season of rest and recreation, during which we may all become better acquainted—in short, tobe practical exemplification of that fraternity we are plaughed to exercise. While it is the intention that the routine of camp daily shall be carried out with all the drums and bugle calls, trom reveille to tapa, and guard-mount and dress parade,它is only as a reminder of our past days of active service;and the enforcement of military discipline will only be of such a characteras may be necessary to maintain order within the camp and protect us from the intrusion of disturbing influences from without. The plan of the encampment is similar to that of a regiment with a street for each post,或like organization participating. Each post will be thought of bearing a hasty retreat, the blushed and finally awakenedthe sleeping steel, made him put on his clothes and marched him to the salaboons.Mr.O'Brien was taxed by Judge Pierce in the sum of $15 for his indiscretion.
John Marray desired to see the sights, came to town, got drunk and was arrested for disturbing the peace.John paid $10 into treasury.

The object of the encampment is to furnish the comrades and their friends a season of rest and recreation, during which we may all become better acquainted—in short, to be a practical exemplification of that fraternity we are plied to exercise. While it is the intention that the routine of camp duty shall be carried out, with all the drum and bugle calls, from reville to tapa, and guardmount and dress parade, it is only as a reminder of our past days of active service; and the enforcement of military discipline will only be of such a character as may be necessary to maintain order within the camp and protect us from the intrusion of disturbing influences from without. The plan of the encampment is similar to that of a regiment with a street for each post, or like organization, participating. Each post will arrange matters in reference to their camp equipment and substance to suit their own convenience and necessities. Comrades having families are requested to bring them along, for the intention is to have a good time in every sense of danger. We want the wives and little ones to enjoy them with us. Posts in our discretion invite friends and not to camp with them, but such invited guests must agree to be bound by the rules (the discipline of the encampment, in accordance with the privileges and protection conferred thereby). Quarter-masters of pests may obtain information in regard to hack and wagon transportation from the following points by addressing this following named comrades: Santa Ana, L. Bell; Anheim, W. H. Hounsom; Norwalk, J. C. Clark.
Each post, corps or camp intending to participate will please notify the undersigned as soon as such a decision is arrived at, giving the approximate number of persons coming and the number of tests they propose to erect, in order that camping ground may be assigned them and be ready for their occupancy upon their arrival. Posts will be assigned position in camp according to seniority.
Any further information is regard to the encampment will be cheerfully given when requested.
And now, comrades, it is needless to remind you that the days during which we may meet to renew and strengthen "those ties which were waved in the fire of battle" are rapidly decreasing. Age is creeping upon us all; death is rapidly thinning our ranks, and the time is not far distant when those who may for a time escape the dread summons will be incapacitated by the weight of increasing years as to be unable to undergo the fatigue of travel and the exposure of camp life incident to such remnants. Let us therefore meet while we may, and as we gather around the campsite, live over again that past which we helped to make garrisons, and our dead made memorials." Let us meet and perfect a plan whereby we may meet in reunion each year, until, in obedience to orders from the Great Commander, we shall report at "the resummalling of the Grand Array of the Republic above." Very Respectfully Years, in F., C. and L.

There is a petition in circulation setting forth the amount of freight produced in locality. It will be presented to the official of Southern Pacific Railroad Company asking them to put in a branch road into Placentia. It is confidently believed that the showing will be so encouraging that the request will be granted. As the Santa Kail road will not give us a station on Southern Pacific certainly will.
There has been considerable excitement among the stockholders of the water company by the summary discharge of Aaron Anderson, our zanjero.
