INDIA'S CHILD WIDOWS. THE UNHAPPY LIVES LED BY THE WOMEN OF THE EAST. What a High Caste Hindoo Christian Woman says of Her Matter—Retreated in Their Infancy They Are Till Death the Haves of Men. At All Boons' church, the Pundita Bamabal, a high caste Hindoo Christian woman, gave an interesting address concerning her work in behalf of the child widows of India. The Pundita is a deeder little woman with a low musical voice. She has a remarkable command of English. She was attired in the simple white vestments of her people. She is endearing to raise sufficient money to enable her to maintain a school in southern India for the instruction of Hindoo women. The picture that the Pundita drew of the condition of the Hindoo woman seemed to have a strange interest for the hundreds of well dressed American women accustomed to liberty of thought and action! The Hindoo theory of creation, the speaker explained, placed the women as a procreative energy, the results of which have been sorrow and misery. The man therefore is the master and is without blame. It is the duty of a good mother to get her daughter under the influence of a male at once for thereby is the female's only salvation and a hope for a place in heaven. It is the custom, when children are mere infants, to promise them to youths for wives. When the girl is not yet in her teens she is sent to the house of her prospective mother in law, who educates her with harsh measures and a stick, impressing upon her her inferiority to the male. Quiet men are allowed to study the philosophy of salvation, and a good wife on dying contends her thoughts on her husband, so that on her return to earth she may take the form of a man and study the philosophy that brings salvation. WHEN THE HUSBAND DIES When the husband dies he does not let his thoughts revert to his wife other than in a feeling of pity for her loss, less he, on returning, take a step backward and assume the shape of a woman. A woman who does not find salvation through her husband will be compelled, should she continue in the form of her sex, to be reincarnated 8,400,000 times. The domestic life of the Hindoo woman is confined in four walls, and the only opportunity she has of going outside is to draw water. She rises and remains standing when her husband enters the home and sits himself. The husband can avail himself of the privilege of bathing himself in the sacred river, but she, because of her domestic imprisonment, being detained from making the journey, can enjoy only the expensive pleasure of bathing his feet after he has been swimming and then drink the water. The power of the husband is absolute. He can doom his wife to hell if he be in the mood, as he is endowed with the power of a goal. A faithful widow worships SCIENCE AND PROGRESS. THE NEW PAYING STONE FROM THE PRAIRIE REGION. A Simple but useful Galvanometer for Amateur and Professional Electricians. Stain and Exhaust Pipe—Trichime in a Human Body. A New Jersey correspondent in Scientific American tells how to make a useful and expensive galvanometer. A hardwood lance, a few inches in diameter and about an inch in thickness, carries a small pocket compass; set firmly into the base over a silk insulated wire; the ends of which are attached to binding paste on the upper side, and can be made a neat instrument at a cost of eighty cents—better than one can buy under $1. The compass may be brought at hardware stores for thirty cents. It is well for the purchaser to test the compass before buying, with a magnet. Then mark out upon the upper side of the base the outline of the compass. With a knife sink the circle thus outlined an eighth of an inch, as packed for the compass. A SIMPLE GALVANOMETER. Cut the wood so as to form a boltain, upon which is wound wire, as shown in the upper national view. This should be laid carefully, one end being left for attachment to binding post A; and the wire being wound about the core by passing the other end through the openings, and then attaching it to the binding post C. About twenty feet of good quality, silk covered wire, of size between 25 and 32 is simply sufficient. After the wire has been wound upon the core there may be attached to it, with a little care, at its middle short piece that will connect with a third binding post B. This will make a short circuit of one half the length of the wire when terminal A de C is connected with terminal B. A fine gimlet hole will serve to carry each end to its binding post, where it is best attached to the foot of the pestle leaving holes in the pasta for other connections. A circular piece of tin may then be fastened to the base, so as to cover the wire, and the whole base may then be varnished or dried to suit the fancy. The compass may be firmly united to its receptacle with a lot of Chattarton compound or glue; care taken to set it perfectly level. MISCELLANEOUS. It appears that Professor Plateau, of the University of Ghent, while trying to observe the effects of the irritation of the retina gazed steadily at the sun for twenty seconds, the result being that chronic iridochoroiditis developed, ending eventually in total blindness. A number of cases are known in which choroiditis and retinitis occurred in persons who had observed an eclipse of the sun. The single flash of a sun reflector has been known to cause retinitis, and other temporary visual disturbances of a functional character have been frequently noted. M. Reich has described a curious epidemic of snow blindness, which occurred among a body of laborers engaged in cleaning a way through the masses of snow which obstructed the road between Passanaur and Mettel, in the Caucasus; the rays of the sun reflected from the vast stretches of snow on every side, produced an intense glare of light, which the unacustomized eye could not support without the protection of dark glasses. A few of the sturdiest among the laborers were able to work with impunity, but the majority suffered so much that among seventy strongly marked cases, thirty were so severe that the men were absolutely unable to continue work or to find their way home, and lay prone on their faces, striving to hide their faces from the light and crying out from pain. Recovery was gradual but complete. Natural tias and Fat Chickens. Somewhere in the book of Job the Harmonites found authority to drill into the earth for fuel, and acting upon such authority, discovered a relic of natural gas 1,800 feet underneath their heartstones. It has been poured through the village, and serves for both fuel and light in every home. Coal, wood and oil are no longer used. At every street corner are elevated pipes where flames burn night and day, winter and summer. They are never extinguished. Economy is certainly the best lighted village in America. One can read five refits in almost sufficient. After the wire has been wound upon the core there may be attached to it, with a little care, at its middle, a short piece that will connect with a third binding post II. This will make a short circuit of one half the length of the wire when terminal A de Cise connected with terminal B. A fine gimlet hole will serve to carry each end to its binding place, where it is best attached to the foot of the rest, leaving the holes in the posts for other connections. A circular piece of tin may then be fastened to the base as to cover the wire and the whole base may then be varnished or diled to suit the fancy. The compass may be firmly united to its receptacle with a hat of Chatterton compound or glue, care being taken to set it perfectly level. An instrument thus constructed will be sensitive to delicate currents, and forms a useful galvanometer for amateur and professional electricians. Positive Copies of Drawings. The image developed thereby consists of bachromate of silver, which becomes dark brown on drying. Trichines in a Human Body. Trichines have been discovered in a human body which was being prepared for anatomical demonstration at the University of Camerino. The man had lived for many years in a neighboring commune, and died without the presence of the trichines being suspected. Peculiar interest attaches to the case for the reason that it is said to be the first case of trichinosis ever observed in Italy. The Snail and Its Load. A late observer, Mr. E. Sandford, reports having made a common snail carry a load of two and a quarter ounces up a perpendicular wall its own weight being but a quarter of an ounce. A small weighing a total of an ounce drew a loss of seventeen ounces on a horizontal table, and supported four ounces while crawling on the ceiling. It even climbed a thoulfer with another snail on its back. Grave of Alexander the Great. The Devil Fish Described by Magee Is not a more tenacious monster than malaria, whether it takes the form of chills and fever, bilious remittent, ague sake or dumb ague. Like the octopus of the story it clamps the victim in its tentacula, and fields him closer and closer in a horrible embrace. Attacked with Hostetter's Stomach Bitterns, however, it gradually relaxes its tremendous grip, finally abandoning it, and the quaddam sufferer, liberated at last rejoices in the sense of new born freedom, engendered by the restoration of complete health. Dyspyesia, too, and constipation, those old and remembrances of the human family, give ground, and are finally driven from the field by this Napoleon ofremadienis, the greatest, the purest in the family pharmacopsia. Rheumatism succumbs to it, so do kidney stones. The nerves, when strained, regain quantitude and vigor by its aid, and the ability to rest tranquilly and eat with nut are increased by it.
