PORTRAITS OF WASHINGTON. Rembrandt Peale's Amount of How the First President hit for His Father. Rembrandt Peale, the artist who painted the famous but horrible in its subject and magnificence, picture, "The Court of Death," was a son of the also famous Charles Wilhelm Peale, who painted from personal sittings several portraits of Washington. In a recent interview he said: "Washington gave sittings to Stuart and my father at the same time, and I was often with him. This was when he was president—about 1724. He sat for my father if the quiet early morning, before his state toilet, had been made, and when he appeared to the eyes of the charmed observer simply as George Washington, the man and citizen. He was then about 62 years old, and the toll and trials which he had passed through as the commander of the army, and the quite as great care of six years of the presidency, added to the weight of increasing years, had told with no little severity upon his tall, stately and still impressing frame and features. His somewhat thin hair was gray; years and fears and earns had all left traces on his face, and his teeth being gone, the lips and cheeks and lines about the mouth were somewhat depressed and contracted. My father's portrait of him, repeated Mr. Peale, "was exactly of Washington as he really was while he was the man only, and before he had prepared himself, as president, to enter upon his more especially then than now, arduous duties as chief executive of the great but very young republic." But why, it was asked, "the two portraits being painted at the same time, should Stuart be so very unlike your father's?" "Himply because," continued Peale, "as I have already stated. Washington gave his sittings to Stuart on the same day, but after a careful preparation of his state toilet, and he was exceedingly almost amusing in all matters of conventional dress and department. Indeed, the remove from the manners and customs of England's monarchy was so recent and so slight that the social atmosphere of the White House partook largely of the eligance of the court, and the expected and practiced department of the executive chamber was as formal in degree as that which had been necessary in order to have audience with the king. "This state toilet, among other things, included the careful combing and powdering of the hair and the tying of it in a cue, also a discern "make up" of the face, and most noticeable of all, the fitting into the mouth of a full set of false teeth. Now, the art and skill of the dentist in those days had not attained to a very perfect imitation of nature, and the plates being large and clumsy, gave to the mouth and whole lower portion of the face that flat, full, square and unnatural appearance which all careful observers of Stuart's great portrait cannot fail to observe, and which is very often questioningly remarked upon. This portrait was adopted as harmonizing more fully with the courtyard conception of what the personal appearance MAKING A FALSE CONFESSION. Dr. W. A. Hammond Talks About the Self Assumed Criminal. I proposed to show that no uncommon circumstance for persons to confess to having perpetrated crimes of which they were either certainly or probably innocent, and that there are forces in operation in the human mind which may prompt to the making of a false confession, even though by no doing life, liberty or property he pet in danger. Thus there is a difficulty in the minds of some persons who exhibit no other evidence of mental alteration to discriminate between their thoughts or their dreams and absolute facts. They breed over some real or imaginary circumstances until they bring themselves to believe in its reality. Such a person, for instance, reads in the daily press of some shocking murder that has been committed, the perpetrator of which has escaped unrecognized. He reads it in one newspaper, and in another and another bears it talked up among his companions and begins by wondering whether or not the murderer will ever be discovered. He knows that murders have been committed by persons who at the time were in a state of noncompliance or who were suffering from an epileptic paroxysm. Perhaps he has himself in his youth walked in his sleep or has laid a convulsion, as his mother has told him. Suddenly the idea strikes him that he may be the guilty man. At first the notion is hirrible to him, but its very horror renders it attractive. He goes to the Academy of Medicine and reads up on the subject of epilepsy. There is scarce a disease, especially of the nervous system, of which any person at some time or other of his life has not had one or more symptoms. The quick medicine advertisers are fully aware of this fact and make full use of it to frighten the ignorant into the purge of their trash. Our impatient self-service has therefore no trouble in finding what he is looking after, and he goes home fully convinced that he has had an epileptic paroxysm during which he may have been a murderer. The transition from a possibility to a reality presents no difficulties to his mind, and ends by fully believing himself to be the murderer, for whom the police are seeking. He visits the place where the crime was committed, questions the residents of the neighborhood in regard to all the particulars, and even interrogates the police relative to their plans for securing the murderer and the secret evidence they have in their possession. At last suspicion turns toward him and eventually he is arrested. The accounts that he has read in the newspaper and the group he has heard that, regardless of his original idea that he had perpetrated the crime during an epileptic fit, and therefore in a state of conscientiousness that forces him to make atonement, confesses that he perpetrated the murder and gives a full and circumstantial account of the crime. Inquiry soon however shows that he could not by any possibility have been the perpetrator, and he is... This state toilet, among other things, included the careful combing and powdering of the hair and the tying of it in a cue, also a discreet "make up" of the face, and most noticeable all, the fitting into the mouth of a full set of false teeth. Now, the art and skill of the dentist in those days had not attained to a very perfect imitation of nature, and the plates being large and clumsy, gave to the mouth and whole lower portion of the face that flat, full, square and unnatural appearance which all careful observers of Stuart's great portrait cannot fail to observe, and which is very often questioningly marked upon. This portrait was adopted as harmonizing more fully with the courtly conception of what the personal appearance and habitiments of one in so great authority should be; but as a portrait, it is of the president rather than of the man, and is to be regarded as the ideal, rather than as the real Washington."—A. S. Pease In The Haratogian. Who Is Never Crazy? There are many firm believers in the theory that most people are crazy at times, and facts seem to support their belief. The following, from a source unknown to the writer, will likely remind a number of our readers of some incident in their experience, which at the time of its occurrence seemed to them most unaccountable. "A wise man will step backward off a porch or into a mud puddle; a great philosopher will hunt for the specks that are in his hand or on his forehead, a hunter will sometimes shoot himself or his dog. A working girl had been feeding a great clothing knife for ten years. One day she watched the knife come down slowly upon her hand. Too late she woke out of her stupor with one hand gone. For a few seconds her mind had failed, and she sat by her machine a temporary lunatic and had watched the knife approach her own hand. A distinguished professor was teaching near a canal. Walking along one evening in summer he walked as deliberately into the canal as he had been walking along the path a second before. He was brought to his senses by the water and mud and the aburdity of the situation. He had on a new suit of clothes and a new silk hat, but though the damage was thus great, he still laughed over the adventura. Our mail collectors find in the iron boxes along the streets all sorts of papers and articles which have been put in by some hand from whose motions the mind has become detached for a second. A glove, a pair of spectacles, a deed, a mortgage, a theatre ticket, goes in, and on goes the person, holding on to the regular letter which should have been deposited. This is called asset' mindfulness, but is a brief lunacy"—Scientific American. Mormonians Not a One Man Power. The first presidency of the church is not a one man power. It is composed of a president and two counselors—three high priests chosen by the vote of a general conference of the whole church. The next body in authority is the quorum of the apostles, composed of twelve high priests, with a president at their head. This quorum is equal to authority to the first presidency, and in case of the death of the president, which even disorganizes the first presidency, the twelve apostles preside over the church. This is situation at the present time, no one yet having been appointed to succeed the late John Taylor as president of the church. After the twelve apostles come the seventies, of whom there are a great many quorums, each composed of seventy elders. The first quorum of seventies is equal in authority to the twelve apostles of the first presidency. There are many other quorums in this priesthood, all of whom have presiding officers, but such officers act only as directed by the members of their respective quorums. There is no one man power, but the whole bottomed on the people upon the whole hasty A Group of Hindoo Pilgrims. The railway from Calcutta enters Benaras over a magnificent iron bridge just completed across the Ganges. It springs by noble spans along great stone piers, the foundations of some of which I am told, are sanken 200 feet below the tessil of the river. We paused at its northern end to let out several hundred pilgrims. A strange sight they presented in their various conditions. There were old women, almost bent double with infirmities of age; there were young women, with half maked babies strained on their hips and leading others but a few years older; there were proud men, of noble, mainly bearer, and poor men, cringling and sniveling in poverty; there was opulent comfort, with servants bearing its bedding and its gear; there were others so weak that they staggered under the weight of a single basket or bundle which contained their wealth. All, when stepping from the crowded cars, turned wistfully toward the holy city, their eyes betraying the delight felt that now at last they were about to bathe in this holiest spot of the holiest of rivers—Carter Harrison's Letter. Smoking Pipes in England. Perhaps the customs connected with the habit of smoking and using tobacco in America and in England are as interestingly characteristic of the two nationalities as any other traits. There is nothing unsignified about smoking a short cigar" or mesenchmum along the streets of London, Birmingham, Manchester or any of the great English cities. A gentleman is none less a gentleman because he does this. Indeed, to smoke a cigar in preference to a pipe argues either expensive taste or the pecuniary ability to gratify them. What would our ladies think of a well dressed young man coming down Broadway about 4 in the afternoon with a limewood pipe in his mouth? Horrible suggestion. Yet in this country a man considers in perfectly good taste to walk into another office with a cigar; group stuck firmly in one corner of his mouth. Moreover he does not take it out even to talk. Such behavior in London would give direct offense and would be construed into an intentional result. New York Press "Every Day Talk." Many Species of Orchids. But 3,000 species worth a mere gardener's attention... Hats Among Friction Maches. Fire Marshal Whitecomb of Boston, recently made a test of the purpose of learning whether rats could and would start a fire by gnawing matches. Three large rats were placed in a wire cage containing a bunch of matches. The first night four fires were by the rats, and others were caused during following days. Examination of the matches showed that only the phosphorus ends were gnawed, and that some of them were carried some distance from the original bunch. The rats had plenty of good food, but are the matches as though they liked them well. The fire marshal is quite certain now that rat carry matches into their holes, and then gnaw them, and that many a conflagration thus originates—New York Sun. Editor Charles A. Dana is 70 years old yet no man walks up Broadway with a jumping air than he. Genius. "Do you know that delightful Mr. Everard—the one who took such high honors at college some years ago! He is a brilliant fellow, and can converse charmingly on almost any subject." "No, I don't know him. Is he a lawyer?" "Lawyer! How can you ask such a thing? Mr. Everard is much too refined a man to make his living out of other people's quarrels. No indeed. He breeds horses and dogs."—Life. Probable. Professor Webster says that "injurious organic matter in the water, instead of decomposing and poisoning people, is changed into 'wiggle-tails', which, in due time leaving mosquites, and the winged matter fleas away, leaving the water purified to the extent of their ability to remove the impurities. If fish are kept in the water they eat the 'wiggle-tails', and grow large enough to serve as food for man. Thus the poisonous ingredient of impure water becomes healthful food. Without mosquitos must marry or swamp land would be dangerously insubstantial."—Boston Bulletin. Victoria as a Collector.
