"ENGLISH, YOU KNOW."
Our Voices Bifter from Three of our British Consine.
The Epiph.
Nowadays, when even the salamadine cry "carsh" or "cawsh," we realize that Anglo-mania has penetrated the whole mass of society. We need not be very old to recollect the time when English people were voted dull and stiff, English dress dowdy and tasteless, and the English accent was a theme for perfanctory jokes of the humbler lecturer.
Imitation is the sincerest flattery, and our British cousins may seem ungracious in suggesting that the imitation is scarcely so good as might be desired.
Flora McFlimsey is a young woman who toils not neither does she spin; and we see her spend her strength in futile efforts to teach her tongue the English tricks, with heart annovated to pity. But it is pathetic when the daughters of toil waste their needed energies in efforts so vain. For they are vain, and Flora McFlimey will never be, as she fatters herself she will be, mistaken for Jenny Bull. Her speech, in spite of her pain, betrayeth her.
Our voices differ from those of our cousins over the water. Our drier air, our often over strained nerves, or our severe winters, affecting the lungs of successive generations, frequently produce those strident, rasping tones which excite the execution of Gail Hamilton. English voices are, as a rule, soft, full, round, low in pitch and (when feminine) low in centradistinction to lead, as was gentle Cordelia's. She, therefore, who would fain relinquish the president's English and adopt the queen's English must not cry aloud, and especially must not cause her voice to be heard in the streets. A Billingsgate fishwife can misplace h'a and utter vulgarity in such a rich, melodious voice as is rarely heard in a New York drawing room.
English speakers also open the throat more widely than we do. All singers understand the great differences between the round note emitted by a well opened throat and the flat, thin sound produced by a languid singer. To an Englishman Americans seem to speak with the throat but half open.
Cultivated Americans and the gentry of England and Ireland differ not so much in their modes of pronouncing words as in their manner of intonating sentences. In the speech of Irish people we hear a fall in the voice at the close of almost every phrase or sentence. The first words are spoken in a higher musical pitch than the last. Americans, on the contrary, speak with a rising inflection toward the close of the phrase or sentence. The English speech, except when impassioned, is comparatively monotone. Hence Flora McFlimsey destroys all the unities when she is simultaneously "vivacious" and "English."
Our bellas nowadays speak with a stress laid on every fifth or sixth word. The ever-recurring enphasis suggests a page from an old fashion novel of the bitter sweet sort, where the tale is all of love and woe, and
MRS. HICKS-LORD'S MILLIONS.
Something About the Female Monte Cristo.
Clara Baily.
Mrs. Hicks-Lord, the female Monte Cristo whose fortune is as unlimited as is her desire to tourprise and dumbfound her acquaintances by magnificent parties and occasions, has rented an elegant house in Washington and made plans for half-a dozen entertainments which will throw society at the capital into a flutter of excitement. As her entrance into Washington will bring her into contact with the representatives of the entire country, and as she is a woman who never takes a ship but some novel result follows, it will be of interest to get a good idea of her now as she is still upon the threshold of her departure. For years she has been what may be termed a plunger. Everything she has done of a public nature has been out of the common and has caused a considerable amount of talk. She was a widow, Mrs. Hicks, when she married Thomas Lord, a venerable and respected gentleman, who was very wealthy and considered beyond the thought of matrimony. When he died he left her in an enviable state, so far as wordly possessions are concerned. Her millions were well invested, and she was shrewd enough to manage them herself. In her beautiful residence in Washington Square she has since lived like a queen, and has enjoyed life without a thought of the expense. Her parlors are gorgeously fitted up and contain some of the costliest brie-abrac to be found in the metropolis. A curious feature among the pictures is the collection of portraits European princes and nobles. Queen Victoria and the entire English royal family, and the various members of the ruling family of the German Empire are included in it. In the back parlor is a lifelike oil portrait of herself, as she was in her younger days. It bortrays a handsome and fascinating brunette.
Up stairs Mrs. Lord has her business office; and this title is by no means used in the way of a jest. She has her big desk and revolving chair. The pigeon-holes are full of letters and papers relating to her business affairs. The management of a vast estate is no fool's job, and Mrs. Lord has demonstrated her ability to do it well. The walls are hung with maps of her landed property, and to them she refers when tenants make complaints or demands for repair. She has the details of every piece of property she owns at her finger's ends and knows the condition it is in; its market value and the return it ought to bring her. While parrying to the extreme limit society a round of pleasure she finds time to devote several hours out of each twenty-four to her office. Her judgment in the matter of stock and bonds is said to be good, and she seldom loses in any speculation. The actual amount of her fortune is not generally known, but judging from the amount she spends annually, her income must be enormous.
England and Ireland differ not so much in their modes of pronouncing words as in their manner of intoning sentences. In the speech of Irish people we hear a fall in the voice at the close of almost every phrase or sentence. The first words are spoken in a higher monosical pitch than the last. Americans, on the contrary, speak with a rising inflection toward the close of the phrase or sentence. The English speech, except when impassioned, is comparatively a monotone. Hence Plora McFlimsey destroys all the unities when she is simultaneously "vivacious" and "English."
Our balles nowadays speak with a stress laid on every fifth or sixth word. The ever-recurring emphases suggest a page from an old fashion novel of the bitter sweet sort, where the tale is all of love and woe, and the sentences strewed with words in italics or small capitals.
This is utterly unEnglish. Though our balles call the street cars "trams," frequently say "Don't you know?" and do not often forget to pronounce "a" broad, they have by no means succeeded in identifying their speech with that of the daughters of Albion. Whether it is desirable that they should do as in all respects is, to say the least, an open question. But it will be certainly well that they shall cultivate low, pleasant speaking voices, such as Taina praised, and such as are not only "English, you know," but also "an excellent thing in woman."
FORTRESS OF THE NEVA
A Russian Prison From Which None Are Permitted to Return.
The fortress up the Neva is a terrible prison, where offenders against the government are given a court martial and punished. None are known to be acquitted, so that no tales come from the place. When a man or woman goes to the fortress he or she is never heard of more. A subject is sent to Siberia in exile or is shot in the pen like a pig. In any event a trip there is a journey to death.
The fortress is on a little island and can only be reached by a boat. None but officers of the empire, with special permission to do so, are allowed to approach it. A number of strangers, our fishing or rowing, and not knowing what the fortress was, have lost their lives in attempting to land there. On the walls surrounding it are ever sentinels—guards who have instructions to shoot down without question or warning all who approach without authority. When the nature of the place is known and the uses of it understood, the purposes of this arsenal are seen. All aspects—everyone known to be plotting or working against the crown, or any of the imperial subjects—are taken here for examination and execution, and so many are never heard of who are taken here that efforts are continually made to destroy the fortress or rescue some one in it; and since those who are taken to it are, in the eyes of the Czar, the rankest criminals, great efforts must be put forth to keep intruders away. It is said the waters about it are often crimson with human blood.
From the fortress thousands of human souls have taken flight every year since it was constructed, and tens of thousands of sentences have been pronounced against exiles, or those who are designed to exile. It is a sober looking structure and snake-hall way into the water. Originally it was intended as a defense in war, but now it is the scene of the expiration of crime against the crown.
A man may murder a whole household of people in cold blood and escape with but a five-year sentence; but if he criticizes the government, the Czar, a member of his family, or an officer, he is abut; at the fortress or exiled to Siberia—the same if he advocates free government, franchises, a constitution or public schools.
Almost every day men and women are taken from the shops or their homes and walls are bung with maps of her lapped property, and to them she refers when tenants make complaints or demands for repair. She has the details of every piece of property she owns at heringer's ends and knows the condition it is in, its market value and the return it ought to bring her. While parsing to the extreme limit society a round of pleasure she finds time to devote several hours out of each twenty-four to her office. Her judgment in the matter of stock and bonds is said to be good, and she seldom loses in any speculation. The actual amount of her fortune is not generally known, but judging from the amount she spends annually, her income must be enormous.
The Devil Fish Described by Huge
Is not a more tenacious monster than malaria, whether it takes the form of chills and fever, balances remittent, ague cake or dumbague. Like the octopus of the story it clamps the victim in its tentacles, and fills him closer and closer in a horrible embrace. Attacked with Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, however, it gradually relaxes its tremendous grip, finally abandoning it, and the quipdam sufferer, liberated at last rejoices in the sense of new born freedom, engendered by the restoration of complete health. Dyspnea, too, and constipation, those old and remoreless enemies of the human family, give ground, and are finally driven from the field by this Napoleon of remedies, the greatest in the family pharmacology. Rheumatism succeeds to it, so do kidney troubles. The nerves, when overstrained, regain quietude and vigor by its aid, and the ability to rest tranquilly and eat with zeat are increased by it. Resort to it in time and avoid unnecessary suffering.
Good sense and Good Brevelling.
Good sense must in many cases determine what is good breeding; because the same thing that would be civil at one time and to one person may be quite other wise at another true and to another person.
BURDETTE.
"Father," said young Mr. Hardpate, showing his father around the university; "this is Dr. Stoneage, our professor of archaeology." "He is old," said the old man, in a fine barstworn coat. "What do you want with a professor of that for? Bible says there isn't goin't to be no more flossis. What do you want with nails?
"I am in favor of teaching trades in the public schools," said Taxpayer. "Me, too," asserted Constant Reader: "I want carpentry or wool working of some sort taught. My boy's got a head that isn't good for anything else."
"I say, Shanghansy, phwat is it all this is they do be talkin' about the fait cure!" "Uz at the faith cure, thin!" "It is fait cure." "Well thin, see, yes haw' nothing the matter wil yezz." "That I have not." "An yer haw' has no faith in anything that ye zhav't." "Sorra the wan of me!" "Well thin, you see, ye are cured ny it." "Uv phwat yez haven't got!" "Ah, divil the wan ut! Uv your's faith, man, nu your's faith."
A young man, a student in Bedlohin college, writes to ask "if a special course of study is necessary to perfect a young man in political argument?" Oh no; one easy lesson is all you want. For instance, say "Grove Cleveland" is a knock-down Republican argument, and to save Jim Blame" is an unanswerable Democratic argument. "Old Bill Evarts" is a chain of invulnerable logic," and "Old Tom Bayard" is a soothing arrangement of the administration." To say "G.O.P." is a resilient torrent of matchless eloquence," and to say "snivel service reform" is a pitiless thirst of brilliant and merciless sarcoma." Just attend a few meetings and then real reports in the papers, son,and you'll soon reflect yourself in political argument—
From the fortress thousands of human souls have taken light every year since it was constructed, and tens of thousands of sentences have been pronounced against exiles, or those who are designed to exile. It is a sober looking structure and stark hallway into the water. Originally it was tended as a defense in war, but now it is the scene of the expiration of crime against the crown. A man may murder a whole household of people in cold blood and escape with but a five-year sentence; but if he criticizes the government, the Czar, a member of his family, or an officer, he is shot at the fortress or exiled 15 Siberia—the same if he advocates free government, franchise, constitution or public schools.
Almost every day men and women are taken from the shops or their homes and carried in the direction of the fortress. No one knows what they have done amiss. If they have offended the government they are exiled; if they have injured the cause of the government they are shot. The examinations are conducted secretly. Not only is the subject not permitted to make a defense, but his friends are not advised of his arrest, charge or sentence. And the crown takes delight in making punishment of his offenders as swift, stern and extreme as possible, that the treasal towards nihilism may be checked. But it doesn't seem to check it. A Russian never looks up the Neva from St. Petersburg but that he thinks of the fortress, and he never thinks of the fortress without shuddering.
Salney L. Marsh, who was killed at the Bay District track Saturday by the horse Don Jose, was buried on Monday. It has been suggested that the association give an extra day's racing proceeds to go to Marsh's widow.
Crop prospects in the vicinity of Hollister were never better. Grain is looking well and gives no evidence of suffering for lack of moisture. The late showers assure a heavy yield. The apricot crop in San Benito county promises to be very large.
Philip Hold, a young farmer living fourteen miles west of Lemars, shet and instantly killed his mother, and shortly after committed suicide. Trouble which had existed for some time in the family culminated in a squable over selling a horse.
Win Marten, the condemned murderer of Fred Nettel, a saloon-keeper, whom he killed for his money, escaped from the Taecona jail on Monday night. He was to have been hanged on Friday, the 27th inst., and the death watch had been set. Marten was chained to the floor with shackles and a guard was with him all the time. Just after midnight the latter fell silently, and Marten took off his chains, and locking the guard in the cell, made his escape. He has not yet been found. A curious feature of the case in that a dismalatch was resulted from Olympia yesterday skating that the Supreme Court had granted a writ of error in Marten's case and that a rehearing would have to take place at a future term of the court.
How to Make a Bandage.
Bandages for surgical purposes are easily made. Cut an old sheet into strips about two inches wide. To join two strips, lay the ends over each other so that there will be one raw edge on each side of the bandage, then saw them together so as to form a flat joining with no hard ridge. Roll up the bandage as compactly as possible, keeping the edges even. When rolled, turn the end to form a point, fasten it with a pin, pull off theravels from the edge and the bandage in ready for use.
A Remedy for Warts.
A correspondent in The Scientific American tells how he got rid of quite a number of warts upon his hands. Place the thumb upon the wart and press it against the home. More wart back and forth upon the boon until the room become irritated or erased, when the part will soon disappear.
A young man, a student in Baldwin college, writes to ask "if a special course of study is necessary to perfect a young man in political argument?" Oh no; one easy lesson is all you want. For instance, to say "Grove Cleveland" is a knock down Republican argument, and to say "Jim Blaine" is an unmanageable Democratic argument. Old Bill Evarts is a "chair of invulnerable logic," and "Old Tom Bayard" is a "swath arrangement of the administration." To say "G.O.P." is a resistless torrent of matchless eloquence, and to say "novel service reform" is a pitiful thirst of brilliant and merciless sarcasm. Just attend a few meetings and then realize reports in the papers, son, and you'll soon perfect yourself in political argument—Brooklyn Eagle.
Sea Nickens.
At this season of the year, when so many travellers leave the agonies of sea sickness, any treatment that claims to be satisfactory is of great interest. To The Lannes is attributed: the statement that a surgeon to the Peninsular and Ornithological company, after trying its ordinary remedies—such as lavender of sodium, cocaine, nitrate of amylcic acid—has found the following method based on the treatment of chloroform sickness most satisfactory: A number of tepal water is first administered to the patient. This of course is generally quickly returned, but switches the stomach. Then a warm humid air lined position in the proportion of one mustard to two of limbs, is applied to the epigastric region, and the following draught, given a quarter of an hour after the tepal water; Chloral hydrate; twenty grains; simple syrup; one drachni; water; to an ounce. If this be rejected our correspondence begins de novo with the tepal water and repeats the draught. After the draught has been taken and retained, the patient is ordered to lie in his berth, and sleep usually follows. On waking the swimming in the bed and nurses have disappeared, and he is able to go on deck.
