THE ROCK OF GIRRALTAR. DESCRIPTION of the Town and Its Defences. New Francisco Chronicle. There is no port on the European station hailed with more delight by the crew of an American man-of-war than is Gibraltar. Let one hundred tars go over the side on liberty with a month's pay in their monk bags and depend on it the Scottish Highlanders will soon be singing "Yankee Doozie" to the tune set by the jollest crowd of tars that ever stepped ashorn. Though Gibraltar has not been subjected to the attacks of war vessels of the present day, skill it has withstood a siege before which no other fortress in the world could have held out. That famous siege of the last century everything has been done to make the place, humanly speaking, impregnable. The 'rock' itself is not more than seven miles in circumference, and its elevation above the sea at the highest point, does not exceed 1,400 feet. The town is situated on the western slope; for on all other sides the accent is very precipitous. The asthma which connects Gibraltar with the mainland is little more than a mile wide, and it is on this asthma that the famous neutral ground is marked off by the two parallel rows of Kinglebath and Spanish entry boxes. Apart from the position of the 'track', it is greatly strengthened by the presence of remarkable natural caverns with which it is permeated. These caverns are all within of acres. The largest, St Minais, has a hall hung with stained tiles teaching from roof to floor. Its entrance is 1,000 feet above the level of the sea, and it is connected with other caverns beneath it of unknown depth. No doubt these naturally evoke suggestions to the British colonists and to the rock. A system of galleries has been cut facing both harbor and central ground at an shorter expanse. Much of this work was carried out by prisoners. At intervals of twelve yards ports have been built on the gneis, and some of the dominance mounted is of very heavy barrels. The galleries are tunneled in there, and several units to a distance of two or three miles. Being strong enough to almost all of the moors of the fries. On the western shore there are many level moors, but the moors of Gibraltar are near the top of the froth. It is here that the intensity is still and even so. Largest moors are about 3,000 feet high, and it has always been built around a river. In Gibraltar though they do not compete with the whole harbor. This garring is one of the least drilled in the Brittany harbour, and the men are usually the pick of the enemy. The feeling of pride will allow only one vessel to bear all of the British troops to hold battle. THE LIME KILN CLUB. Important Communication on Free Trade. The Dusky Sons of the Wabash. The secretary announced the following communications: CHARLOTTE TOWN, P.E.I. Brudder Gardner. My name is Pop Eye, and I lib on de confines ob dis city, which has been known for over fifty years by de unabourny names of de Bog. I was readin' in de last published report de Lime Kiln club dat Nat De Courneya application for membership was not received, kase he was too far along highway life. When I read dat report to ole Nat he just said: "Wal, I see morn' 45 and not eligilg, and as de president has asked me to lecktar on de dark aiges or any older subject in which I am in de dark. I must decline for obvious reasons. Now, Pop, yume a younger man, ob brilliant parts, and I shall de undertakin' ower to you." Now, Brudder Gardner, wil dia yer, interdunion, I'm open for an engagement to lecktar, and if I'm to be gibbon'd choice of subjecks, I shall select political economy or free trade versus perkebskin, for dat is des subjek which I can dilate upon wld do most logical perspicacity and ol' greatest blokence. I hab a record down he by de son on dat most likely subjek dat would turn any Tammany hall tower a lied green wit jenosity. On de great ocean sun ob content ob free trade versus perkebskin in die yer colony de Free Trade club, aware of the natural aspirations ob my genius, closed an agreement wid me south to exist support ob his heels ob de Bog end de Warf 12 at de polls. When desinees ob war for ob campaign was furnished I hired de upper story ob de ole tamery, laid in a hill brown'n ob Brighton amber ale, five pails of white oye, five barls coinel, six barls clams, half ton spenled sels and six dozen snared rabbits, and den de yards ports have been built on the guns and some of the dams mounted is of very heavy railway. The galleries are installed in there and several to a distance of two or three miles. Being with strength to almost all the works of the fort. On the western side there are more level works, but the other officers' barracks are near the top of the truss. It here that the industry is divided and separated. The garrison occupies nearly 2000 m² and it always boasts from the crane at the Horse-tower. In doubling out not only are many Highland and Liberty buildings, though they do not compete with the whole barn. This garrison is one of the best in the fortification, and the man is usually the pick of the army. The building of pride will allow only half of the British troops to be held guarded. It hortens it that General Grant considered this garrison the tower body of men only he saw during his four years around the world. There are a great number of Moore here deserves the Tynisham and a few Spaniards. All these go visiting the town are prepared to take a permit de jure, and must find temporary to get security for them in Liberty during the time taken on its way for which the permits made out. However, this may be reconsidered after the expiration of the time period of our authorities present as much as possible any acquaintance in the way of new residents. Due to the town only. inside the joints of the harbour strangely were admitted after nightfall. The officers, however, may intently watch for a trial of a month, but they must act out for all his duties. There is almost assured according to the laws of Liberty, but there is a pressing want of the military mount station all the provisions of the court. The armlist is united in all pertaining to the "rock," and is more than an apparent sentence. The majority of the houses in the town are built with flat tiles which enable them to receive a considerable amount of rain water. Tanks are built under the boilers, but are fitted with drains leading from the walls. It is the water supply which gives vital importance to Gibraltar, but the kings have finally mastered the position, and the task is now well prepared with good water. Two large tanks containing 9,000 and the other two large tanks keep constantly to supply naval vessels. In this stands today the key to the Mediterranean, and in the center that flow from Britain with its numerous islands of wealth in the last decades. The strategy importance of the main towns observed by the governor of Tobacco in 211 A.D. and under a later control of Lay's bank and bottled deposits in that year. During a period of twenty years from its establishment by the Governor Bilsharah was held either by Moore or Sutton and was a constant cause of trouble in those two years. In 1822 a steward under the Duke of Medina Silva entered into the territory from the Moors, and so greatly benefited it as to be deposited in Grenada Bay in 1761 this combined Dutch fleet, and a sea lodge Rockaway and The Duke of Hesse Darnes took over from the Spanish Navy until 1824 when it was renamed the British Navy. The steps and would not let such situation end without further struggle, and staked Dan Garrison in 1827 but a creation of hostilities came about on the signing of negotiations between Straits and England. The next year which lasted from 1779 to 1835 was one of the greatest annuities in British military history, and never had troops will give rise on this famous garment that told taller allies against the combined forces and Navies. All these implements of modern warfare were used by the bearers but that rock proved inappreciable. At Dunkirk, of the British army, is authority for stating that 1,000 guns were brought to bear by the allies, and that in the corner were anchored political economy or free trade versus persecution, for dat is de jure which I can dilate upon wil do most logical perspiritity and old greatest slokence. I hab a record down heath by de saan on dat most likely subject fat would turn any Tamany hall touther a hired green wi jet joyness. On de great occhun sh ob content ob free trade versus persecution sh in dyer colony de Free Trade club, aware of the natural aspirations ob my genius, closed an agreement wid me as leashh to exist de support ob ob heekers ob de frog end ob Ward II at de polls. When deines ob war for de campaign was furnished I hired de upper story ob de danery, laid in a bill brown ib Brighton amber ale, five pails of white oye, five bar's coin meal, six bar's clams, half ten spenheels sells and six dozen snared rabbits, and den depended upon my elokence to do de rest. When de grazes was laid away and a tin dipshall purchased, I perceived to interest de citizens in de great questions ob de day De first man I met on de street was Flat, and Jose! Heah you Flat, what you load' round fort! Dev again to be lieuten soon, and we go to support free trade; dat means free lunch for free weeks. Flat, you heale and toss ye'of fram de highways and by ways, de avoness and main streets ob di yer Bog and bring in de free and independent electors into di yer tamery, and don'n you forget Ralph Happy, Dave Frosty and Enterprise Brown, de most experienced repentants in de ward. When day had assembled hero was no resin for dat tin dipshall till I called de meetin' to colorify amusement! dat dis was de freeshift, free sample, and consequently de free trade party. As de lealah ob di band ob patriots I ask you to hay make all youth personal and domestic affairs for de next weeks, and grab your attention to de great questions ob de day When Brendler Gardner! I pealed in de nest touchin' and pathetic terms to dat ajounce and touched de most tenderow olb their feelin' i Ask, waerkero a dry front in dat meetin'? Echo answers, was der! Den when I reacted de climimacks and sel: Sink or swim, lib or die!" and so forth and so forth dat meetin' was in de most happy state di minimumity and fellow feelin' known in de animals ob political campaigns. In conclusion I said: "Fellow bog tretters, I will now gib you de interpretasmin of de differ- ence between free trade and perteckshun, and I will do dat by two ilstrushns which am de most familiar to you. De fast am dat wil oft free trade dere is no free lunch; consequently free trade am de cause and free lunch am de effect! De elder illstrushun am from de barn doh fowl and de incubator. Free trade is like da hen that is set and brings out her chickens in de natural way; they grow up; de flesh am firm and de flavor sweet when it am cooked. Dem chickens am brot up under de maxim dat "Moese moulder am del muss for Moses." Day goes to roost and when in de mormin' do owner ob'am gets up脱n't dere. It am fast-class for do consumer; but it am a mighty push show fer do producer. On do older han Perteckshun am like incubator. De chickens am forced and brought out in wrong time of de yeah, de flesh am soft and de taste jeah when cooked. De business am just class fer do producer, but it a mighty push show fer do consumer. De arguments all frow was so conclusive det every one ob dat patriot band followed motde pollis on lection day. But as we was about to exercise de privilege of free and independent elects as a basier from the Perteckshun alle asked in a groundrum. "Walber is it best to survey dogs or to take a persuasive view of do matter?" I see dat depends upon do prospect." Well,' so he., if you vote for our candidate well set up dpins fer do next free weeks and frow in a barrel pickled page feet to restore equilibrium at de sand ob de show." We decided in de prospective and rose to de dignity-of disinterested patriots willin' to please de interests ob state above de interests of party, and unlose de grasp ob de foreign manufacturer from de front ob de country. Now, Brendler Gardiner I'm willing to accept liberal terms to lecktright afords De Linne-Kin club, wil die proviso dat I'm lowed da A Touching Incident in the Life of Abraham Lincoln. The following touching incident is told for the first time in the Century's Lincoln history. April installment. "Lincoln, by nature and habit so calm, so equable, so demonstrative, nevertheless passed this period of interrupted communication and isolation from the North in a state of nervous tension which put all his great powers to severe trial. General Scott's reports, though invariably expressing his confidence in successful defense, frankly admitted his evident danger; and the President, with his acuteness of observation and his rapidity and correctness of inflection, lost no single one of the external indications of doubt and apprehension. Day after day prediction failed and hope was deferred; troops did not come, ships did not arrive, railroads remained unbroken, messengers failed to reach their destination. That fact itself demonstrated that he was environed by the unknown—and that whether a Union or a Saxon army would first reach the capital was at best an uncertainty. To a coarse or vulgar nature such a situation would have brought only one of two feelings—either overpowering personal fear or overwearing bravado. But Lincoln, almost a giant in physical stature and strength, combined in his intellectual nature a masculine courage and power of logic with a sentimental tenderness as delicate as a woman—and an ideal sensitiveness of conscience. This presidential trust which he had assumed was to him not a mere regalia of rank and honor. Its terrible duties and responsibilities seemed rather a coat of steel armor, not only heavy to bear, but cutting remorselessly into the quick flesh. That one of the successors of Washington she old find himself even to this degree in the hands of his admirium was personally humiliating; but that the majority of a nation should be thus hailed and made to poll on section day. But as we want to exercise privilege of free and independent elects in a baser from the Vettelshouse asked in a quorum. "Welker is it best to survey your order or to take a perceptive view of do matter." I see dat depends upon prospeek. "Well," says he, "if you vote for our candidate well set up de pines for next few weeks and frown in a bird ob pickled page feet to restore equilibrium at de canid ob de show." We decided in de prospective and rose to dignity-of interested patrons willin' to please de interests ob de state above de interests of party, and unlose de grasp ob de foreign manufacturer from de front ob de country. Now, Bruder Gardner, I'm willing to accept liberal terms to leckur afore de Lime-Kin club, wil de provise dat I'm lowel de free use ob de onion bin in case dree is a release ob chillibains, caused by crosin' de straits in ole Kullyinyah's ice boat. POETRY. The communication was referred to the committee on agriculture, with power to send for persons and papers. A NEW BRANCH. The following was then read: TERRRE HAUTE, IND. Brother Gardner, President Lime Kink Club: We most respectfully petition the illustrious distinguished and honorable supreme lodge of noble patriarchs over which you have the exited honor to preside in a reigning prince in Paradise hall, and guardian of the philosophies and destinies of the American citizens of African descent, that you grant us a charter to locate a branch here, on the raging Wabash, so we can be a part and parcel of this sublime organization. Our claim is based on the following facts: We are "mascots," possess the cabalistic number of twenty-one acres and have that amount of "trale dollars," "filled halves" and "punched nickels" in the "treasury." Our characters are vowed for by the circuit judge, "prosecuting attorney," mayor and the chief of police. We have experts in all the sciences, adepts in the games, champion banjo pickers, beal and too artists, chin scrapers, bicycle riders and base ballists. Our chief innocent amusement, crops; have good hall in "Happy Alley," rink in "Happy Hollow." We ourselves are always full and happy. The name we have selected for immortalization is: "The Brotherhood of Dunkle Son of the Wabash." The committee extended invitation to Brother Gardner to whistle the "Prairie City" and inflict upon us a lecture on the commumd: "How to Make a Good Living Without Hard Work." Respectfully, "I must admit that I favor do some of the communications," replied the president as the secretary passed it to him. "Brother Givendan Jones am now Indianised to establish a branch to be known as 'Do High Chicken,' and he will be integrated so did he may drop down to Terry Haughty an investigator on di potition. If he report as favourable a branch will be established down." The Ternade Town, Willow and other leading spring hats to be laid at Mine Mountain's military store. Application for a Patent. U. S.
