The Weekly Gazette. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. Henry Kuebel, Charles Kuebel, Estate and Provenance. THURSDAY... APRIL 26, 1858 That is an unlovely "split" between the two factions of the Republican party in the city of Los Angeles. It developed itself at the election of a delegate at large from this county to the State Convention. Colonel Boyce, a candidate for the place, being considered one of the leaders of a faction within the party, declined, in a speech full of manliness and good wishes for the welfare of the party, to allow the use of his name in connection with the office. Major Bonebrake having announced himself as a candidate for the office, said that he belonged to no faction, and while this is undoubtedly the fact, so odious had become the faction that was supporting him, it was impossible to elect him, even with his vast influence, popularity and wealth. The Major sealed his own doom. He protested too much. The second ballot the Anaheim delegation changed their vote—which had been evenly divided" between Bonebrake and Banbury—to Henry T. Gage. The change of the first delegation on the roll call to the support of an "outsider" who had in the first ballot received but few votes, was greeted with applause. Other gains made to Gage as the ballot proceeded. The Fifth Ward of Los Angeles, the last to vote, changed to Gage, amid the wildest enthusiasm. The vote of the ward made another ballot necessary, as no majority had been secured by either Bonebrake or Banbury. Santa Ana and Tustin changed their votes to Gage, and then in tumultuous applause and cheering Bonebrake'sward itself twentyeight votes to Gage, who was soon declared elected by acclamation and called upon for a speech. It would seem to be astonishing that so excellent a gentleman as Major Bonebrake should be defeated solely on account of his support by the Los Angeles Times, the organ of the mugwump faction. The Anaheim delegation was early made aware of this, and started the ball rolling for Gage, and it kept rolling until the young man was declared elected. In Great Britain intended alliance of any of the members of the royal family must be our middle and lower classes—seems to him too deplorable." As Mr. Arnold failed to tell us under what circumstances the great apostle of free trade, Mr. Cohen, pointed out the hesitation of life at £5,000 a year in England; we are unable to pursue the subject further than to say that it is a bit of testimony which goes to show that when Mr. Cohen spoke of the advantages of free trade he had in mind the people who have £5,000 a year, and what interest it is to buy as cheaply as possible, without asking themselves what consequences may arise to the producer. THE SICK EMPEROR Some Little Improvement in Elimination The Quarter Visit. BERLIN April 25 — The Emperor's condition shows clearly a perceptible tendency toward slowly progressive improvement. His fever has diminished regularly during the last few days. His temperature to-day was thirty eight degrees Celsius. His physicians hope for further statement in view of recent symptoms developed, and they find especial reason for hope in the return of his appetite. The fact that the Emperor has higher taken a fair quantity of nourishment solely due to the urgent recommendation of his physician. Good results followed the observance of their advice. His Majesty's present disposition to take solid food is a satisfactory symptom. Dr. Kreuse will leave the castle for the present. The Emperor rose to receive Queen Victoria and cordially welcomed her. He afterwards will retire to his own apartment. The Queen, accompanied by the Empress, will visit and take tea with the Dowager Empress Augusta this afternoon. Her Majesty will afterward pay a visit to the castle where the Emperor, when he was crown Prince, resided. Tomorrow the staff of the British Embassy will be presented to the Queen. Later the Queen will secure Princess Hermine. Queen Victoria arrived at Charlottenburg at noon Tuesday morning. The Emperor, Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Saxe Mengen received her at the Imperial Prince Henry and his sisters, the Princess Victoria Sophia and Margaret Sir Edward Mallet the British Ambassador At Bertha Duke of Nathland and the Burgessand and munitions Council at Berlin were and present. Greetings between Queen Victoria and the royal family of Germany were warm. The Queen Prince continued the Queen to an open carriage drawn by four horses, which she entered, and with the Empress herself her was driven to the castle. Canada people lined the route and cheered enthusiastically as the carriage passed. The Queen paid a visit to the Emperor shortly after arriving at the castle. The doctors News in Brief. Sharpherders are sources and in dear Crook county, Or. In Prineville, Or., grain and pasture suffering for want of rain. Ice formed on water out of doors in hill county, Or.; last Sunday night. Reno had an auction of town lots late day, about twenty being disposed at Oakdale; Staniford county, will upon the question of incorporation make Simons needs a church, and the local endeavoring to raise the funds to build Grain crops in the San Joquin area of the Sacramento valley are sadly in need of rain. General Bidwell of Chico has a tree that produces 1,750 pounds of fruit a year. The Sweetwater dam is 366 feet in on the top and seventy-five feet on the top. A company has been incorporated at ten to bozen wells and supply the city natural gas. A $10,000 bathhouse, with private and large swimming tank, is to be at Framo at once. The San Jacinto box factory has down to wait for railroad community with the outside world. There is a patch of 1000 acres of alpine ranch near Rio Bonito, and it is going to produce eight tons per acre. San Benaventera is to enjoy a bar May 5th, and the fighters have already rived from the land of the Montana farm. Los Angeles has a glass factory; turned out its first production on this it made from sand of the river. An Ohio colony of twenty families bonded a treat of bottom lands near lava; Sutter county, at $100 an acre. The road from Oakland to Port Caleb made a double track as soon as that arm Pacific can spare men from other towns to perform labor. Sanford Jackson, a wealthy Los Angeles man, has purchased the White Springs, near St. Helena, and intends up the place and making it a place of a man while sinking a wall faction at Spangle, W.T., came across specimens of splendid coal. The fire can燃蒂 that he has struck a bonain. While John Miller was running away in a grain held near Santa Rosa, no one of his two-year-old child were cut body while it stood almost concealed tall grain. The use of petrolum in the farmthe Santa Rosa woolen mills and light works is about to be abandoned oil making so hot a fire that it burns boilers and furnaces. In Great Britain intended alliance of any of the members of the royal family must be reported to Parliament, and the consent of the lords and gentlemen of the House of Peers and Commons must be granted before such marriages can be lawfully consummated. Queen Victoria had the delicate duty to perform an announcement her own tribunal to Prince Albert. The marriage of the Princess Louise and the Marquis of Luton son of the Duke of Argyll, gave an immense amount of trouble owing to the difference in rank. Even now on all state occasions the Princess outranks her husband; and in the great jobless pageant last year Lorne cut a sorry and obscure figure in the ranks away in the rear of his wife and of the pretty German Princess that had married into the Queen's family, but in wifery with royal blood was supposed to flow. The landmark marriage of that royal scapegrace, George IV, with Mrs. Pittherbart, was never sanctioned by Parliament and was ignored by his marriage to a Princess in the costimary way. Had the marriage with Mrs. Pittherbert, been recognized, the royal line of England would have descended through an American family of some distinction in recent times, that is, if there be any truth in the traditions concerning the origin of that family. The royal marriage contemplated between Prince Alexander of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Germany, which, at one time, threatened to rupture the relations of Prince Bismark with Emperor Frederick, has apparently fallen through, partly, no doubt, through the silkiness of Frederick, Now Queen Victoria, who was said to be intriguing to bring about the marriage, has found it politic to declare that she does not approve it. Senator Evarts favorite amusement rests in his feet rather than in his hands, and he winds his long legs in and out like the indian rubber man of the circus. He is said to be able to twist one leg around the other three times and rest both feet flat on the floor, and this is his favorite attitude while listening to a good story, or thinking of an after-dinner speech. Evarts is one of the best after-dinner speakers in Congress, and he is one of the best story tellers. He rarely remains in his seat for any length of time, and slides about through the Senate chairs from one brother Senator to the other, giving a word of wisdom here and a witty repartee there, and carrying good-nature with him wherever he goes. When the United States Senate is doing business under what is known as the two-minute rule, President Ingalls limits the time required at Charlottesburg for a visit Tuesday morning. The Emperor William I arrived at Charlottesburg on Wednesday afternoon at Luton Press, Crown Prince and Crown Princess Victoria, Sopra and Margaret, Sir Edward Mallet, the British Ambassador at Berlin, Duke of Kalthland and the Burgomaster and minister general at Berlin were present. Greetings between Queen Victoria and the royal family of Germany were warm. The Queen Prince conducted the Queen to an open carriage drawn by four horses, which she entered, and with the Empress Louise her wake driven to the castle. Crowds of people led the route and cheered enthusiastically as the carriage passed. The Queen paid a visit to the Emperor shortly after arriving at the castle. The doctors feared that the meeting would explode the Emperor and probably upset both their families were grumbling. The Emperor seemed rather brighter after the interview and his temperature was more mild. MAJOR WILHELM An Associate of his conduct on the field of Sidney. Many stories about the late Katherine Walsh are current. The most charming attempt perhaps is one relative to the battle of Nassau says the Paul Mall trainee. The King followed by Bismarck was posted in only London apart. The Chancellor praised his Majesty to withdraw. The King repaired "When my army admonished to the concession it may deny to you in the matter of it," Bismarck remained silent, but when he heard the position unbelievable he examined: "As a Major I have no advice to give your Majesty on the field of battles but as Prime Minister I am bound to resist your Majesty not to expose his life in such a manner." The King instead to this contradiction and reluctantly drew back a knife, but Bismarck, not considering the retaliation suddenly raped, gave a knuckle to his Majesty's nose, which galloped off. The King was very ill in the spring of 1885 and then hospitalized his attending military managers on horseback. His Majesty refused to go on a carriage, writing: "Some hours count me most antitumour. For every minute present rejoiced: 'Sire you should that Feederkirk the threat went in a carriage on a similar occasion.'" Yes, replied to Majesty: "but he only did during the last years of his life." The Kaiser was then ill and evidently considered himself a man. Another military commander: The Emperor had just received the train of a celebrated general who had been placed on the retired list. "A brave solider" named Majesty; "what a pitty it has been manager mount on horseback!" And after a few minutes silence, he said: "After neither can I send have been placed on the same long ago." Everybody knew that the Emperor was in the train leading himself to his subjects from a window of the police during the changing of guard. After one of his officers he wanted to get up and go to the window as usual, but the doctors opposed, on which has Majesty explained: "Oh, leave me alone! Doubtful to see it." Doesn't Badekker announce his guilds that I am to be seen every day at the window? The Emperor William during his lifetime saw disappear from the scenes at Peters, eight Emperors fifty-two Kings six Sultans and twenty-one Presidents. Four of these are still alive, but the remaining eight come are dead. Kaiser Wilhelm possessed among other virtues of the Hohenzollern, that of economy. With out falling into the world availance of Fredrick the Great, he knew how to reckon, and succeeded in raising the fortune of his house, which was at one time very small. THE CHINESE TREATY Sanford Jackeen, a wealthy Law man, has purchased a White Springs near St Helena, and intends up the place and making it a place of fame since at Spangle, W.T., came across specimens of splendid coal. The first brilliant that he has struck a bonanza. While John Miller was running away from the Santa Rosa woolen mills and light works is about to be abandoned oil making so hot it burns boilers and furnaces." While William Carvin, a locomotive man, was owing his locomotive standa side track at Portland, another collided with it. Garvin was between the engines and fatally crushed. At Napa last Friday Mrs. Henry of Atlas Peak while standing in a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over a hundred yards from a blast was strung over A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yards from A hundred yard... When the United States Senate is doing business under what is known as the five-minute rule, President Ingalls limits the time of the speakers, not by his watch, but by an ancient sand glass which has been in use by the Senate for many years. As soon as a senator begins his speech the glass is set, and as soon as the sand has all run out, it just five minutes that is, down comes the president's gavel. San Bgenaventura is to have a bull-fight May 5th, the fighters having already arrived from Mexico. Perhaps they left there because of the laws recently passed in some of the Mexican States prohibiting their barbous exhibitions, and hope to find California less particular about such matters. San Bgenaventura apparently needs a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or somebody to enforce the law against barbarous amusements. The proposition for a United States ship to survey a cable route between this coast and the Pacific islands is good. It will seat but little. Many competent naval officers are idling on-pay for want of employment for them, and almost any of our men-of-war would be more useful for that kind of work than for cruising purposes. The late Matthew Arnold, in his recent review article on American civilization, admitted that "for the great bulk of the community, the class of people whose income is less than three or four hundred pounds a year, things in America are favorable," and that society seems organized especially for the benefit of those who have not big tucomes. In another paper written years ago, which he entitled "Equality," he gave us a glimpse of the principle upon which English society is organized. He said: "A Frenchman might agree with Mr. Cobden that life in England is good for those people who have at least £5,000 a year. But the civilization of that immense majority who have not £3,000 a year, or £500, or even £100— THE CHINESE TREATY Morrow's Bill to Give Effect to Its Provisions. The bill prepared at the State Department and introduced in the House by Belmont to carry out the provisions of the new Chinese treaty which is now before the Senate, is not considered satisfactory by the Panic Coast delegation. Representative Morrow has therefore drafted a bill which is intended to give effect to the proposed treaty if it is ratified by the Senate. Morrow's bill is offered for consideration only in the event that the new treaty is ratified. It provides that Chinese laborers shall be absolutely prohibited from coming to this country. It allows ninety days after the law takes effect in which Chinamen who are entitled to come to this country under the existing law may return. After that period all Chinese laborers except those entitled to enter under the proposed treaty are absolutely excluded. Any master of a ship who brings a Chinaman not lawfully entitled to land shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be subject to a fine. It also provides that any Chinese person not entitled to be in this country may be arrested and deported. The bill has been very carefully drawn and will effectually carry out its intent. Trade Notes. From the Redmond Citrograph. The Rivermile Chronicle has climbed the golden stair. It has been closed up on an attachment for $1,800 borrowed money. The San Bernardino Times is also "in the hole" for a four months' supply of paper. But Without the Wall, Sick? From the Citrograph. It has been said, and with truth, that if a wall be built around South California, that all the necessaries and almost all the luxuries of life could be produced within her borders. All fruits, cereals and metals are found here. Chamberlain, the Texas patient of Puntsau's under treatment for well hips, in out of danger. He was insaneated for the last time yesterday. Bismarck, who began by taking the wagon into his confidence in the controversy with Empress, suddenly caused all revelations nobly knows, whether in Berlin, Worland London, the exact state of the disgrace it believed that a sort of truce had agreed to, that there is no betrothal between Prince Alexander and Princess Victoria now and that there will be no resignation.
