ADVANTAGES OF ANAHEIM.
To-day Anaheim holds out more solid inducements to purchasers than any other town in the county. The land here cannot be surpassed for the raising of products generally, and is comparatively cheap. Abundance of water is guaranteed with every acre of land in the valley, and homesekers cannot wish for any better advantages. Anail from this, railroad facilities are first class, affording ample and convenient transportation for the shipping of cereals and produce.
Another advantage of this place is the fact of having an organization here whose object it is to build and operate a broad-gauge railway, the same to traverse from the coast, about twelve miles distant to the south, through Anaheim and extend on to Placentia and Pomona, to the north—an extensive account of which will be found in another column of this issue. This road will be one of the grandest undertakings ever projected in this valley, and the results to be derived therefrom are unbounded. It will open up a line of travel which will be of vast importance to residents along the line, and will traverse through a stretch of country well known for its feasibility. The project is in the hands of wide awake gentlemen and it is needless to say that it will be poshad to speedy completion.
The motor road which will be built from Anaheim to the new town of Carlton at no distant day is another undertaking which will make its presence felt as regards the advancement of this section.
With these advantages combined with the various other inducements possessed here, we have surely cast our lot in pleasant places.
A good many people ask why Anaheim has not "beamed" more rapidly than it has. This is easily answered. The residents here are all comfortably well-off, and, until recently, had no desire to exert themselves in becoming Anaheim. They came here in early days and acquired their fortunes before any of the now flourishing towns surrounding us were ever thought of. But now the pertaining to the welfare of society at large, and it is high time that their sense should be heard—not commonly, but all the time—crying out for reform.
If our present board of Trustees will not attend to this matter, one to it that at our next alertness only those will be placed in positions of responsibility who will give us redemption on this point.
Secondly—We lack the progressive spirit of the age in our town of Anaheim. We are, as the old saying is, "an old Dutch town," and the majority of the old original settlers have been as long content with what they have wanted for themselves, viz.: A comfortable living (carrying nothing whatever for any improvement) that might add materially if their wealth already acquired) that any new scheme for advancement is met upon the very threshold with the question, "What will that pay me?"
Had it not been for a few acquisitions made during the past year of men of capital enterprise and brains, ready and willing to embark in any enterprise that would add materially to the improvement of our town, we would still have been in that Tip Van Winkle sleep for which we have been noted without any possible chance of awakening therefrom.

A Very Interesting Letter From That Thriving Nature.
The long deferred boom has at last reached Placentia. While there is no great inflation of values, the hundreds of visitors who have visited Carlton have seen for the first time this beautiful, fertile and productive plain, and all admired it, and their favorable impressions formed in passing through here did much toward influencing them to make purchases in Carlton.
It seems that the hint we threw out in our last about connecting Placentia with Anaheim by lands of steel has been acted upon more specifically than we anticipated. A company has already been formed, nearly all the capital subscribed and enough paid in to build a broad gauge motor road from Anaheim.

With these advantages combined with the various other inducements possessed here, we have surely cast our lot in pleasant places.
A good many people ask why Anaheim has not "beamed" more rapidly than it has. This is easily answered. The residents here are all comfortably well-off and, until recently, had no desire to exert themselves in becoming Anaheim. They came here in early days and acquired their fortunes before any of the now flourishing towns surrounding us were ever thought of. But now the oldest residents here are being indulged with the new life which is being experienced throughout the county and, together with the more newly arrived, public-spirited townmen, are confident of making the Mother Colony one of the richest as well as one of the most productive places in Southern California.
Now that the streets in Anaheim are being graded and put in shape by competent contractors, and which, when completed, will speak volumes for the town, the residents ought to give their attention to the cleaning up of the yards of their several homes. Visitors passing through a town look firstly, to the neatness with which residences are kept, and the homes which are in neat order receive unlimited praise; and intending purchasers are more readily attracted to a locality when they know that the residents therein are industrious and energetic in keeping their respective homes in tidiness. Already, Anaheim possesses many lovely homes with elegantly kept gardens. There is a decided contrast between a clean and well-conditioned yard and surroundings and one which is grown up with weeds and covered with rubbish.
Several residents on the west side of town are hot advocates for the extension of Center street straight through to some distance below the S. P. Depot. It is worthy the attention of our Board of Trustees and is a project which would add very maternally to the advancement of that part of town. We have heard it expressed that property holders along the much desired extension will freely give the required right of way, and we think that with all our shoulders to the wheel we could accomplish this very necessary improvement.
D. M. Bruny, the founder of Pasadena, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. R. B. Waite, in San Fernando, on Thursday night last. D. M. Berry was, until recently, an attaché of the Los Angeles Herald, and as a journalist was a valuable acquisition to that paper. Mr. Berry was well known in Anaheim and he leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his death.
We notice that some of our exchanges are discussing the value of wind breaks around orange orchards. It has been demonstrated that where orchards are protected by tall wind breaks, the damage to the trees and fruit has been comparatively small compared with that where the trees stand unprotected from the winds which have prevailed to some extent in this section lately.
It seems that the hint we threw out in our last about connecting Placentia with Anaheim by lands of steel has been acted upon more specifically than we anticipated. A company has already been formed, nearly all the capital subscribed and enough paid in to build a broad gauge motor road from Anaheim to Carlton. The corporation is styled the Anaheim, Pomona, Olinda and Ocean Parks. We understand that work is to be done at once and presented diligently to completion. Six miles of rails are already in Los Angeles. The owners of land on the east side of Placentia avenue, with perhaps no exception, stand ready to give enough land for a roadbed outside of the city park. These on the west side have already given right of way for ditches, so the ditch is on one side, the railroad to be on the other; the county road will not be interfered with.
We hear rumors that the valuable properties of Mecca, Littlefield, Melrose, Riparian and Krieger, near Placentia school house, is to be divided up into town lots and acres property. This property lies on both sides of the A., T., & F. Railroad, and in the center of the valley; the crossing of the Anaheim, Pomona, Olinda and Ocean Railroad with the A., T., & F. will be in this townsite. The situation is beautiful for a town, being in the center, both east and west, north and south, of one of the most fertile sections in Southern California. A good school house is on the tract; water ditches with abundance of water already here, and in the midst of the most thrifty and profitable orchards in Los Angeles county. One of the attractive features of this new town will be the beautiful park with an artificial lake of fresh water that is to be donated to the town by the producers. For water system development, country health, etc., this townhouse but few, if any, equals.
Mr. John Wagner has a friend visiting him from San Antonio, Texas. He is situated with the country.
Col. R.J. Northam has returned from San Francisco, where he went a week ago.
J.W. Shanklin will arrive here this evening on his way to Washington, D.C.A party of surveyors accompanies him from San Francisco who will go out to the Colorado river to make preliminary survey for ditch to New River country, San Diego county.
I.B Cargile of Sacramento has been here on his way to superintend the survey at New river.
Mr. and Mrs. Pendleton of Downey, father and mother of A.P. Pendleton of this place, have been spending a few days with their son.
The housewife who has been industrious enough to raise a few turkeys this season has been rewarded for her industry with from twenty to twenty-five cents a pound live weight. About four hundred pounds of turkeys have been shipped by four such housewives of Placentia, enabling them to enjoy numerous articles that makeeth the heart of woman glad and independent of the head of the house.
We paid a visit of two days to Los An.

The Santa Ana Blade is talking for county division. It is true that the county officials have at present more work than they can apparently accomplish, a fact due to the alarming rapidity with which this county is being populated. The Los Angeles papers, however, throw cold water on the idea of dividing the county.
Christmas Day was appropriately observed in the several churches in town with special ceremonies. The people attended in goodly numbers and the services were interesting.
In lieu of snow and sleet we had sunshine and strawberries, the day being not unlike the middle of May.
LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE
Editor Gazette: The question has been so often asked, "Why does not Anaheim boom like the surrounding towns?" that your correspondent has at last determined to bring to the notice of the public a few potent reasons why Anaheim does not keep pace with other sections of the county.
Firstly—It is high time our Town Council was taking pattern after our neighboring towns in the matter of passing an ordinance closing the places of business on Sundays, and more especially the saloons. A week ago last Sunday the writer was called to Santa Ana, and whilst there his attention was called to the orderly state of the town. All business houses were closed. Previous to my last visit made there it was much like our own town, but by reason of the wise councils that prevailed in the board of Town Trustees the town has been transformed into one of decency and respectability.
The press can exert a far greater influence than all the other factors combined in educating the masses of the people in matters of decency, sobriety and all things else ap-

Washington correspondent of the Even Express, of the 20th inst., says: An amus accident happened at the White House by it was related to me by a witness. A young lady who is a stranger in city, having come from a small town in interior of New York, thought she liked to call on Mrs. Cleveland, andender her way to the Executive Man. She entered the vestibule, at the in-room of which stood the doorkeeper, told him she would like to see the Prest's wife, and she asked him if he take her card to that lady, handling care at the same time. He could not a smile coming to his face, and, in an tornea possible, told her that he will like to comply with her request if anything were possible, but that his or-ware not to inflict the cards of visitors Mrs. Cleveland unless he knew the to be an intimate friend of the latter.
