Alex Henry has been awarded the contract for carling the sidewalks in the Santa Patricia.
H. C. Gade has purchased a pair of thoroughbred colts which he will train for his truck line.
Town taxes will be delinquent next Monday. Collector Smythe cautions people to that effect.
A Christmas sermon will be delivered at a German M.E. Church by Rev. Mr. Ben Anger Sunday at 11 A.M.

A fair audience greeted the Georgia Minutela here on Tuesday night. The company is first-class in every particular, and the audience was kept in constant laughter throughout the evening. Billy Kerranda is a show in himself.
An inquiry was held at Newport last Friday on the body of an unknown man found dead in the alley at that place. Some men who had been hunting along the bay found the body lying on the shore in the mid-night. Several people were informed and they went to the place, but having wait for the title to take them to the body, it was ten o'clock in morning before they got it out. The body was lying on its left side, face slightly downward. In the right hand, the deceased had its hat and it was partly buried. The lit arm and hand under his head and atrium of the mast. The twin tails of Frida Putnam are all gilt-edged property and buyers will profit by purchasing.

George Amerge of Fullerton will depart shortly for an Eastern trip. Upon his return the Fullerton hotel will be formally opened.
Mr.Van Brank, who is largely interested in Carlton corner lots, was at the Planters' on Sunday.
Mr.William Eubler, a brother of Mina Host Eubler of the Anaheim caravanary, later arrived in Anaheim from Pasadena and will remain here.
A.M.Mitchell of San Diego, a member of N.H.Mitchell, arrived in town Tuesday evening.

This show will begin at Anaheim Wednesday, December 28th. The manageries of 4 Paw new show contains many rare specimens of animal kingdom and is an interesting part of these shows, but it does not claim to be the largest manageries in the world. Everyone has seen elephants, lions, tigers and wild animals, and many shows have a larger collection than the 4 Paw & Samwell's shows, but they have a ring performance that is unpassed. It is considered by all to be the best circus performance ever seen in this award arena. The first and foremost performers in every branch of this profession have been secured for this show, including most celebrated equines, gymnasts, leapers, tumblers and acrobats of America and Europe, who together give a programme that is unequalled by any other circus in the country. One act performed in this circus is this most starting ever conceived: Mile Zola rides an ordinary bicycle across a wire fifty feet above the ground without a balance weight of any kind. This has never been attempted by any other person in this world; all other circus riders use a counter balance in their shape of a trapeze beneath their bicycle and two people working on it.

R. H. Dunn worked at San Francisco another of Japanese perimeters. These bring to the producer an average about ten cents per pound. A nice little income from the trees now in bearing.
The Anakeim Orchestra, composed of Prof. James, Mrs Schubert, Missara E. A. Pullen and N. A. Bittner, will give a ball on Monday evening, January 21. Everybody is going to be there, and as the orchestra gives good music it will be time well spent, See adv.
One of the minstrel men fell down the stairway at the entrance of Kroeger's hall Tuesday night. He was descending from the hall and as he was about to turn at the foot of the stairs he fell violently down the aperture but luckily was uninjured. There have been similar accidents before at this place. It is an exceedingly dangerous opening, especially on a dark night.
Schumacher & Hendricks report the following Fullerton sales: Lot 10 in Blk 23; lota 17, 18, 19 and 20 in Blk 19; lot 14 Blk 28; lota 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 in Blk 18; lot 1 in Blk 19; lot 14 in Blk L. Center tract. Ten acres near Fullerton. All to home parties at an amount of $11,760.
George Thompson, a lad, with an eye to a Christmas dinner, thought it a good idea to lay in a supply of tarkey and so started in quest of the fowl and found one, but not in compliance with the laws of the State. He was, therefore, arrested, taken before a Justice and lined $20. And for the non-payment of which he was sent to jail. Some sharply inclined ladies subsequently hailed him out.
Millions of pounds of canned fruit are sent yearly from San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento, Marysville and Stockton. Los Angeles cane much less than sufficient for local consumption. Fruit goes to waste in all our orchards for lack of facilities.
Mr. Holman's Easterptus Trees
It will be seen by the proceedings of the Board of Supervisors that Silas Holman's ecclesiastical trees are to be allowed to remain standing. Their value as a wind break was never better illustrated than during the late windstorm which did no much damage in other parts of Southern California. Mr. Holman picked up only two boxes of windfall in his whole archdail. The proceedings of the Board were as follows.
In the matter of Silas Holman, Supervisor Rasmore said that under the board therefore made to the overseer of the Anaheim district to remove trees from county road, between Sections 5 and 6. Township 4 S., Range 10 W., N.B.M., belonging to Silas Holman, be and is hereby recused, and Clark instructed to notify Road Overseer of action. Carried.
The Rabbit Drive.
All nimrols are referred to the following facts in relation to the coming rabbit slaughter:
Look out for the rabbit drive on the 21th. Supper will be served at the Anaheim Hotel at 8 o'clock same evening. Anaheim must look "a leatle out," for Orange crops in hard to beat. All shooters will please report to Captain Keith by the 17th ready for duty. Qualia will not mount, as we think it dangerous to shoot them on a drive. Let all the boys who want to drive please report. A good time is insured to all.
The Los Angeles Herald says: We were told down at Anaheim the other day that a native Californian had rented one and a half acres of land in that town which he had planted to chilla, as we call red peppers. He harvested from this little patch eight hundred strings of this vegetable. They are worth $1 per string.

Mamie Short, an elocutionist, will exhibit in Kroeger's hall, Anaheim, Dec. 23l, under the auspices of the Ladies Aid Society of the Presbyterian church.
Our village is still growing, and new buildings are going up all around us. Two families from Iowa recently arrived, and have built neat cottages on land purchased from Mr. Robinson; their names are Talbot Quinn and Frank Pack. A new cottage has also been built by Miss Chase of Santa Ana; it is situated just south of the new hotel. Mr Wayman has built a nice new cottage on his place on the north side of town, and Mr Abbott is building in the same neighborhood. Mr. Farrington, our energetic carpenter and contractor, is building a new house to take the place of the one that we hurried down on his place some weeks ago. Prof James, our accomplished music teacher is building a cottage on his place east of the hotel.
A forty-score tract just west of town known as the De Obert ranch was sold last week to a party in Kansas; consideration $20,000, which speaks well for our community as to climate and fertility of soil.
Mr Chapel of Elgin, Ill., is visiting Mr Ira Woodman, an old comrade in arms at the late war. He is well pleased with Gallen Grove.
Mr Walter Head and family of Los Angeles are visiting friends in this community Mrs. Head is a grand daughter of our silent postmaster Mr. Webster.
We are glad to learn that Mrs White who has been suffering for some time with rheumatism, is improving. Mr.R.W.Havevy who was attacked with a hemorrhagic

ORANGEHORSE.
Winter work is progressing steadily in Orangesthorpe, and all the farmers are correspondingly busy. In a month more grain seeding will be completed.
The young people in this neighborhood are preparing for a little bit of quiet celebration on Christmas Era. A tree and short musical and literary programme are about the size of it. As is usual in such cases there is rather more sport preparing for the evening than in its actual enjoyment.
School closed last Friday for the holidays. The past term has been a successful one both as to progress made and attendance.
Several strangers have been in the neighborhood past week looking for land. A good thing all the real estate transfer taking place here are for the purpose of building homes. Little is done here on pure speculation.
The boys are out now at all spare moments practicing for the big rabbit drive Saturday. Anaheim will have to look well to her laurel if she wants to hold her own on that occasion, as the Orangesthorpe boys are all experts, and pull the trigger hard when they shoot.
PEAT LAND
Its Value for Vegetable Growing
A thinner for Investors.
Editor Gazette — To those parties who are not in the vein of speculation, seeking to make a fortune out of a forty-acre tract — by dividing it into twenty-five fact lots — but who come to buy a home, content with a comfortable living and something more desirable, no better selection in all Southern California can be made than that strip of country lying to the southwest of the town of Westminster, known as the peat land. It is only within the past few years that this section of country has come into notice. For years it lay vacant, no one desiring it worth settling on, considering it as a begin in which the bottom might drop out at any time. Your correspondent more than twelve years ago stood upon this very ground, which is now dotted with comfortable homes, and by moving the body up and down, caused the surface to shake up a distance of nearly a real around where he stood. It is a vast deposit of decomposed vegetation.
The first years cultivation of said lands does not result in much profit to the owner, as the soil requires to be turned over and exposed to the sun and rain by the action parts of the tree in a certain solution, viz.: One pound of lye (American concentrated) or four-fifths of a pound of cosmetic potash (90 percent) to a soap solution of twenty-five gallons, made of one pound of the best whale oil soap (containing no more than 25 per cent of water) to four gallons of water. Solution to be sand warm, 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
IMPORTATIONS FROM OTHER STATES AND PORTION COUNTRIES.
As it is a fact that we have received our worst insect enemies from other countries, the main caution must be taken in regard to the introduction of them, and importers of orange trees from Japan and Florida are asked to keep me notified as regards the time receipts of coupons, and to cooperate with any local authorities that may exist.
As regards the possible importation of the encyclopedic plan spread on deciduous trees, we urge the necessity of shipping only trees which are free from soil subserving to the roots.
In regard to the enforcement of these rules we shall rely upon the local guarantee guardians as well as on all lawful dealers to whom we appeal for the client cooperation in this matter, which is of the utmost importance to the treasury in general.

State Inspection of Fruit Pests.

News in Brief.
John C Morton, faster son of Cantain A.D.B. Smith, former emeritus from San Francisco, was arrested Tuesday for murder of Joan Nicholson, who was found shot through the heart at Tia Juana a few weeks ago. The arrest was made at the instance of a man named Palmer, who at first was under suspicion. Palmer had trouble with Nicholson, but since the latter's death last night a great effort to find out the murderer.
Ex Governor St John, speaking at a meeting of Public Informationists at New York Tuesday evening sought to arrange two great parties as disheath and incompetence. He gave ten perseverance and then turned the subject to the tariff. He said there was a duty on foreign goods, but the sum of foreign labor entered free. He deplored the fact that dranken ban and tramps may become men, while our wages and mothers are denied the privilege because they are women.
There was a wedding on Monday at San Pablo, nine miles east of Spaniola, N.M., and advance at night. Whisky was plentiful. A row broke out about 11 o'clock during which three men were badly cut. The principal fighter, Gabriel Sancher, left the house, and in a short time several shots were fired through the window. A little girl was shot in the eyeball, the bullet chancing around her face and making an

A card.
I notice in the Gazette of last week a rumor that the Santa Fe Railroad, after leaving Fallerton, would divert its route north of Buena Park and leave the town south of their line. On Saturday last when in Los Angeles I thoroughly investigated the matter, and found there was no ground for the rumor. Judge Fagan said he had heard nothing of the matter, but that he had been instructed to obtain the right of way through Silva Strong land, which directly west of the townsite, and had just Mr. Strong $500 for right of way. The Pacific Land Improvement Company had heard nothing of such change, and said the company would not be likely to sacrifice their own interest, as they own half interest in the 400 acres of land which comprises the ranch and townsite.

Horsebound Money
We have received a copy of the Redding (Shasta county) Free Press, with the following marked extract:
W. M. Hoge, "the honey man," who perhaps has handled more California honey than any other man living, was in town last week. Mr. Hoge, who is the proprietor of the celebrated horsebound aquary in the southern part of this State, has been prospecting in the Sacramento valley for a bee range and found in a warm shelter Sianta canyon this honey-filled hornhurricane in great profusion. It is a great favorite with bees; they revel in its bloom and gather this precious panacea, bearing it off to their hives saving as it were to those who suffer from pulmonary complaints." We ask it is the soul of the blossom."
Up to this time Mr Hoge's southern apary has scarcely produced enough horsebound honey to supply the home demand, but he confidently expects that next year he will be in a position to introduce it generally throughout the United States.

In view of the continued spread of certain dangerous scale insects, especially of the diluted" or "cotton cushion" scale (larger parachute) throughout the State, partly to the fact that in their early and minute stage they are apt to be overlooked, and thus are carried hundreds of miles to new sections, we hereby caution all nurserymen, dealers and purchasers of nursery stock, to exercise the utmost caution in selecting their stock, especially of citrus trees, and certain ornamental evergreen trees as well, especially acacia. Before ordering they ought to inquire carefully into the condition of localities from which they buy, to satisfy themselves that no danger of contagion exists. In regard to the location known to be infested, we refer them to our report to the State Board of Horticulture, and to that of Professor Riley to the Department of Agriculture of the United States, and we shall always cheerfully give any information necessary on this point; but due allowance must be made for the utter impossibility of visiting all portions of this vast State, and the fact that it is comparatively few counties we receive any co-operation from local authorities.
To those unacquainted with the appearance and habits of the lorgs we also refer to the report of the State Board of Horticulture and to that of Professor Riley, where full illustrations and descriptions of this veritable pest of our trees and plants can be found. As matters stand now, we claim it is the boundless duty of anyone interested in the welfare of our gardens and orchards to become familiar with this pest and assist in its examination; otherwise it will only be a question of time when the whole State shall become infested. We shall discourage all buying from any locality known to be infested, and in case of shipment from such places we demand the most thorough disinfection, which shall consist in the dipping for at least one quarter of a minute' of all
