AN AWFUL DEATH
Terrible Fate of an Old Rancher

A J. BLACK.
was the inscription rudely written
through place of pine board in black paint
marked the spot where repaired the remains of an old man who was foully dealt with in the northern part of San Luis Obispo county. This was only one of many that occurred in that section of the State in early days, and in this case like many others the award of Justice never fell upon the perpetrators.
Old man Black was a person of lonely habits, and but little was known of his life history. He owned a number of cattle and a small ranch several miles out of the then town of San Luis Obispo, and in the year above mentioned he sold both cattle and land and realized thereload about $1,000. This money he left in the store of Chamberlain & Co. in the town of Cambria, a small American settlement thirty miles north of San Luis. He remained in town for a few days, and once when in his caps remarked that he would take his money and go back to old New Jersey. On the 5th of August he packled up his traps, consisting of a camp ing outfit, drew his money, and late in the afternoon started out on horseback for the Pine Station, by the way of the Pine Mountain trail, on his way to San Francisco. While going up the steep mountain side he met and exchanged a word with two well-known cattlemen. This was the last time that the old man was seen alive.
Standing in the saloon in which Black made the remark that he would take his money and go to New Jersey were half a dozen men, among whom were three brothers, hard characters, by the name of Cornell. These men lived on the labor of their aged father and what they could pick up in the way of petty gambling on vacant horse races and at the carol table. White water
The agitated man recovered himself and gasped, "I don't know anything about it now," and walked away; but the hybrand heard him matter as he pinned out the door, "My God! my God!"
For several days following the Cornell boys were very quick. Their hoistgren laugh and loud voices were not heard in the saloon, and they moved quietly about the streets. There was no investigation, and again the interest in the matter died away, and no pawn away from the memory of the "obstinent inhabitants" a crime and a mystery that will only be solved on the great judgment-day. The Cornell family after a while moved north to Somerset county, and the house of "Old Man Black" still lie on the mountain-side, and mightily the horned owl hoots and the coyote howls over his lonely grave.
The Western Settler's Chosen Sparefice.
With every advance of emigration into the Far West, a new demand is created for Hustetter's Stomach Batter. Newly peopled regions are frequently less salubrious than older settled localities, on account of the mismaa which arises from recently cleared land, particularly along the banks of rivers that are subject to freshata. The agricultural or mining emigrant soon learns, when he does not already know, that this Batter affords the only sure protection against malaria, and these disorders of the stomach, liver and bowels, to which climate changes, exposure and unaccentual or unhealthy water or diet subject him. Consequently, he places an estimate upon this great household specific and preventive commensurate with its intrinsic merits, and is careful to keep on hand a restorative and promoter of health so implicitly to be relied upon in time of need.

Almost no text is present in the image. The content appears to be a historical newspaper article with headlines and paragraphs.
The headline "Three days later a vapurno in search of castle came upon an extinguished campfire on Pine mountain on a small plateau." suggests a story about an event that occurred three days prior.
The subheading "He dismounted and fell down the trail down the gulch." indicates a significant action taken by the character.
The body text continues with details about the events, including the character's actions and the context of the situation.
The final line of the article reads: "For hours the jury and spectators searched in every direction, but in vain."
This is likely a summary or conclusion of the story, providing context and ending with a statement about the outcome.
The image contains a watermark or logo indicating it is from a publication called "CALIFORNIA CAT-R-CURE," which is likely a news agency or media outlet.
The text is presented in a standard newspaper layout with columns and justified alignment. The font is serif, typical of newspapers from the 19th century.
After some was deliberation the jury decided that J. J. Black had been murdered for the purpose of robbery by a party of parties unknown. As it would have been a hard task to unmove the headless body some six miles distant, it was buried where it lay and a high mound of rocks placed over the grave to prevent the crawling mountain lion and the skulking coyote from completing the work of mangling the remains. Later the rule headboard was placed to mark the old man's last camping place.
In the mean time the absence of three of Cornell boys was noted, and two weeks after the murder they came back to town, and it was noted that they had more money than usual and public suspicion was aroused. However, they explained their absence from own on the night of the day that Black started out on his fatal journey by stating that he had attended a fandango given at his Strother ranch, south of town, and their possession of money as the result of a poker game in San Luis Obispo. Both statements Starwarda were found to be false, but as nose orattle stealing was in those days as a crime as the taking of human life, she excitement of the tragedy died away.
Years passed by and the murder was forgotten, when one day a bee or heavy hunter was near the scene of the tragedy, and loomed a will behead far up on a ledge of rocks on the Rocky butte, which is a twin peak of Pine mountain. The hunter began snelling the bold face of the cliff till he reached a small ledge about 150 feet from the foot of the battle. As his head came up over the flat surface what was his horror to find himself face to face with a bleached, grimming human skull. He picked it up just behind the ear was a bullet-hole, and the leaden pellet of death itself rattled in the hollow endaver. Close to the skull was a rusted revolver with three chambers empty. The truth flashed upon the hunter. It was old man Black's head, and year after year in summer sun and winter's rains the plight of the crime had grand over the beautiful San Simeon valley to the south and the broad Pinilla to the west from its inhabited resting-place far up on the mountain allix.
The skull and pistol were taken to town exhibited and the former identified as hat of Black's by a gold filling in one of the hunters. On the handle of the pistol were two bullets, "A. C.", cut in with a knife.
The hunter took the skull and pistol into Washington Saloon, and the longhorn aboard around him, mourning agap, with activity.
"Jam's this year gun!" It has your initials M.J., and be approaching one of the Cornell boys.
The man extended his hand to take it, usually drew it hard and gave utterance.
