Superior judge Brunswick has tendered his resignation to take effect April 1st. He has accepted the position of general solicitor of the California Southern Railroad Company, with headquarters at Los Angeles. His salary is said to be $10,000 a year. Judge Brunswick is one of the foremost lawyers in the State, and a favorite Judge with the members of the bar, every member of which will regret that he has resigned, and at the same time be pleased that he has received such an honorable and lucrative appointment.
At a meeting of the members of the bar held on Wednesday, W.P. Gardiner, Esq., was unanimously chosen as the choice of the lawyers for the Superior Judgship, to fill the vacancy caused by Judge Brunswick's resignation. Mr. Gardiner was chosen at the former meeting shortly after Governor then ignored his claim. It is probable, however, that he will this time accrue to the popular wish.
A birthday party was given on Tuesday evening in celebration of the 224 anniversary of the birth of Edmund Padderatz. A large number of young friends were invited to the festivities, and the host did all in his power to entertain the guests in a hilarious manner. A bountiful supply of refreshments.

The advertisement of Fred Christ, the new tailor who has opened a taylor shop in the Anaheim Hotel, is published today. He is an artist in his line, and is in every way worthy of patronage, and he ought to receive it.
The Southern California Floral and Perfumery Company has been incorporated. This is the same enterprise referred to in these columns last week. The purpose is to grow flowers on Baltwin's Santa Anita ranch, and make perfume therefrom.
E. Chilson was attacked with a fine case of chicken pox on Friday of last week, but has already fully recovered and is pursuing his wounded avocations. Fearing that the disease was small pox (the victim having visited Los Angeles some days previously) the house was quarantined until the disease developed sufficiently to show its harmless character.
The railroad contractors have been canvassing the town during the week for men and teams to work on the road in the canyon. Anaheim is a poor place to tend mile men in. There is a subtle atmosphere influence about the place that makes the laziest man industrious, and as a consequence everybody is at work.
The firm of Melrose & Knapp are authorized to sell a few of the best tracts in the Hazard subdivision of the Shanklin tract at special rates very much lower than they have heretofore been offered. A birthday party was given on Tuesday evening in celebration of the 224 anniversary of the birth of Edmund Paulderatz. A large number of young friends were invited to the festivities, and the host did all in his power to entertain the guests in a hilarious manner. A bountiful supply of refreshments were provided, and dancing was indulged in mainly by members of the male sex. The occasion was spent enjoyably, despite the din and confusion which reigned throughout the evening.
There has been a consolidation of brass bands, and a new one organized, comprising the following members: Charles Schmiller, leader; W. Crowther, corner; R. H. Gilman, corner; J. Holmsen, clarion; Won Kruger, corner; Oscar Zayn al-Asl; A. Bittner, tenor; N. A. Bittner, baritone; C. W. Alme, tuba. These gentlemen are all first-class musicians, and collectively make a band second to none in the county.
Rimpan Dros have received a large lot of dress goods direct from the Eastern manufacturers, which the lames will say are the handsomest styles ever brought to Anaheim, and as cheap as handsome. A very full assortment of other summer goods have been received, and they are daily expecting a large assortment of men's and boy's clothing for summer wear.
At the meeting of Anaheim Lodge A. O. U.W. on Friday night of last week, H.S. Knapp, the Receiver of the lodge, was presented with a handsome sale board, in preparation of the faithfulness which has characterized his administration of that office for the past three years. The presentation was a complete surprise to the recipient, who showed that he felt duly grateful for the handsome expression of esteem.

The general list "amidship," there is reporter of this curtion on the 3rd sale, and was surpired by the town has many months. Property day in consequence coming there. I cateing a depot near A street car line P.R.R.Depot to street to the prop road.
The firm of Melrose & Knapp are authorized to sell a few of the best tracts in the Hazard subdivision of the Shanklin tract at special rates very much lower than they have heretofore been offered. This is done to induce settlement on this really excellent tract, and as the offer is only for a limited time it must be taken advantage of immediately.
On a fence on the butskirts of town is painted in large letters the legend: "Use Squirrel Poison." It was rather funny to see two squirrels perched on the fence rail, their knowing heads inclined in a way to suggest that they were laboriously endeavoring to "spell out" what was there painted. Such a spectacle was seen the other day.
Rev. M. V. Wright, the father of the boy who was killed at Long Beach last summer by being crushed by a log thrown on him by a wave, brought suit against the Long Beach Land and Water Company for damages for the death of his son, alleging that they had neglected their duty by allowing the log to float on the water. The plaintiff was non-suited and the action dismissed. An appeal is probable.
The Riverside Citrus Fair has been indefinitely postponed, the reason given being "on account of the fear of smallpox from Los Angeles." The only one of the executive committee who voted against postponement was Editor Holt. The alleged reason for the postponement is undoubtedly malicious and probably false. It is more than likely that the postponement may have something to do with the condition of affairs indicated by the following, copied from a letter written by a prominent commission firm in San Francisco, to-wit, Littlefield, Allison & Co.: "We have not received a sound box of Riverside oranges this season. They are all frosted."
The Southern Pacific is preparing to extend a large number of tracks from the depot to the Los Angeles river at Buena Vista street, to accommodate their enormous business, in addition to their miles of trip track on the east side of the river.
A. T. Julius Voight, a former resident of this place, and very well known here, died in Los Angeles on Wednesday of congestion of the lungs. By a singular coincidence, he died on the 61st anniversary of his birth.
The railroad graders are at work on the Bixby ranch and at Horseshoe Bend. The work through the canyon has proved heavier than anticipated, but it is thought that the graders will be at work in Anaheim within two months.
A man in the employee of the railroad company at work in the canyon sustained a severe fracture of the wrist one day this week, and came to town for medical assistance. He now carries his arm in a sling.
It commenced to sprinkle slightly on Wednesday evening, but the fall was insufficient to lay the dust. The weather is still cloudy, and there are prospects for another good rain.
It is said that a party of Government surveyors are at work at Newport harbor. Congress made an appropriation of $5,000 for the work some time ago.
A ball is to be given by the Anaheim Orchestra on the evening of April 1st. They have already received assurances that there will be a large attendance. See adv.
The stockholders of the Anaheim Building and Improvement Association met on Monday and adopted a code of by-laws. There is considerable interest manifested in the Association, and a determination expressed to make it advantageous and beneficial not only to the community generally, but to the stockholders particularly. Justiceally managed, this can be done, and if the unions will respond as they should to this enterprise, a number of buildings will be at once begun. The opinion was expressed at the meeting that the five hundred shares of stock would all be taken within a few days. As the monthly installments are fixed at a share, the monthly income of the company will be $10,000. For every thousand dollars invested by the Association, an investment can be borrowed on mortgage; it is deemed expedient so to do. It will be seen, therefore, that the Association has the power to accomplish much in the way of improving Anaheim and its citizens.
No scheme for the board of this place that has yet been put forward commented itself more to the pigment and consideration of the citizens than the one now referred to. It is more than probable than long before the states are paid up they will be at a high premium. It will require but two or three profitable sales by the association to cause stock to be a species of property much sought after.
The by-laws have been printed and are ready for distribution by the secretary. They clearly set forth the plan on which it is proposed to conduct this association, and we think their personal will induce and well wisher of Anaheim to assist the movement by subscribing to its stock.
The regular annual meeting of the stockholder will be held on Monday, the 26th instant, it which times a Board of Directors are to be elected. Let every man work to have every share taken by that time, and see that a good business flourishes. Board of Directors be presently publishings.
The climate of Anaheim
The verilure is growing equally under the influence of the general size, and the face of mother earth will soon be at its protrest. The weather during the past week has been irreproachable, and not more invigorating upon the vegetable world than upon the human system. Old residents underrate the elevation of Anaheim.

Success of the Anaheim Ostrich Farm
San Francisco Herald of Trade
The ostrich feather business is one that late years amounted to such enormous profits in Europe, that some time back California capitalists, who are ever ready to introduce into this State any legitimate enterprise which may prove a further source of prosperity, which has so characterized the Pacific slope, decided upon importing the birds from Africa and established an ostrich farm for the production of brothers for the market. Moses Hopkins and other known mangled men needed to employ expert, who was sent to the Cape of Good Hope. He visited a large number of branches and selected the closest lords, having received carte blanche from his sympathize spare no trouble in money. The bird twenty in number were stopped and arrived safely at their destination, on Low Angles county, where a very superior ranch in this particular nearly healthy condition.
The birds have since travelled a number of young and today count over seventh which can be claimed as prizes and promoting ostriches. About twelve months ago the company commented to parch for these two months of the year the birds are in a partnership closely health condition.
The plumbers at that time were sent to New York and Chicago, but not working with a favorite moth that declined to willingly participate in Saw Furniture which has a growing and still demandless Moser W. Haker almond who have had a large and extended experience in this line of business and have for the past twenty years been buying these goods especially in Europe, were supplied again for the California Ostrich Farm and how receive the prices discussed from operand. It required no small amount of experience in sorting out the feathers or other things under their respective grids. This process having been under gone then apparent to be tried, a work requiring very little handling and is alone under the terrestrial animal restrictions of the firm. After this the matter is still the whole process is completed and after being weighed they are distributed among the leading feather dealers in this city. The last February plucking was superior to anything yet gathered by the company and Mr. Haker reports that may be made available.
The Climate of Anaheim
The verdure is growing equally under the influence of the general sun, and the face of mother earth will soon be at its protrudent. The weather during the past week has been improachable, and not more invigorating upon the vegetable world than upon the human system. Old residents undertake the pleasure of living in such a superb climate as weavils them eleven months out of the twelve, but the stranger is captivated by the sedimentary charm which is in such sharp contrast to the condition of things in his old home. It is this marvelous climate that has brought, and will continue to bring, thousands and hundreds of thousands of people to this State. It is not too remarkable fertility of the soil which attracts, for in many of the other, and older States the soil is equally battleful. The imminent to come West into this State is the great pleasure of being able to live in almost perfect sunshine. It is torturate that it is so, because no man may fail, and the host of soils wear only out the slims chinns of California goes on forever.
The Street Car:
There will be a meeting of stockholders of the Anaheim Street Car Company held at Knox's Hall last afternoon at 2 o'clock in the morning, at when it is hoped every stockholder will be present.
The cars have been in operation since Tuesday, and have already proved a great convenience, and are well patronized. There is little doubt that when the new railroad is in operation the street cars will pay handsomely and be remunerative to stockholders.
The tandem and last payment on subscriptions to stock is now one and payable to the secretary at his office. The payments hereof have been made with a promissory which is highly creditable, and it is imperative that this last payment be made immediately to settle the only outstanding account of large amount.
Anaheim's Boom.
The general boom has struck Anaheim "amalgamation," there can be no doubt of this. A reporter of the Star went with the excursion on the 31stst. to attend the hand sale, and was surprised to see the progress the town has made in the last several months. Property is advancing quickly in consequence of the promise of coming there. The A., T & N. L. are locating a depot near the center of the town. A street car line is being built from the S.P.K.R. depot through the town on Center street to the proposed depot of the other road.
Personal Paragraphs.
Col. Walter S. Moore of Los Angeles was in town on Monday for San Francisco where he will probably take up his residency.
A Henderson has gone to South Riverside, where he will open his proposed hardware store.
Also Henderson was elected goleta to the Grand Palace, N.S.O.W., which convenes in Nevada City on April 17.
P. Hoyle Jr.'s yesterday morning for San Francisco. He will join his brother at Los Angeles, from which place they will take their restroom at San Francisco.
A Gray Society of Foster was in town yesterday. As President of the Tecumseh Law enforcement Society his time is full of opportunity looking after the building of the large house which the society is now erecting at that place.
Victor S. Johnson, a Lieutenant in the Chicago Police Department, is visiting his brother P.A. Schmidt. So well pleased with Anselmo that he has decided to purchase property here, and so soon as he can save money connections East he will return here and press days under his own vine and fig tree.
Phylloxera at Berkeley.
For several years past vines infected with phylloxera have been kept grazing at the State University grounds at Berkeley in spite of the remnants of the vinearbots of Alameda county. Professor Hilgard, who is in charge of the experiments conducted by the University, asserts that it is necessary to keep the diseased vines that the haliae of the noxious insect may be thoroughly stained and the preventive remedies investigated. The grape-growers of the other parts of the country apparently think otherwise and at lavarize resources have been unmanly may adopt taking that every infested vine be destroyed. As yet Berkeley is only placed in Alameda, where any phylloxera exists, and there is none at all in Contra Costa. Just back of the University, and within three miles of the infected vine argyles are several valuable vines that are expected by their owners to be spiked into an attack of the pest at any time.
In Negro and Samoan countries the insects invariably spread among some recessions that of the plantings vines, and it is reasonable to prevent them from reaching from the University farm. Many complaints of these insectights by the managers at the University have been made by Country Costa who visits at the rooms of the Agricultural Commission.
Besides maintaining that phylloxera, spikes are sent by the University to every vine-growing section of the State. A rigid hagcot has been declared by many vine growers on those cottings, no vineyard owner caring to give the pest a direct invitation by accepting anything given from a place where the phylloxera has occurred.
The general room has struck Anaheim "amidship," there can be no doubt of this.
A reporter of the Star went with the excursion on the 31st, to attend the hand sale, and was surprised to see the progress the town has made in the last several months. Property is advancing quite rapidly in consequence of the phonous advertisement coming there. The A., T & S. F. are locating a depot near the center of the town. A street car line is being built from the St. P. K. R. Depot through the town on Center street to the proposed depot of the other road.
The Rabbit Must Go!
The war of extermination goes bravely on, and this world is full of woe to the jack rabbit in T 4 S, R 10 W. Last Saturday's hunt was even more successful than the first one, and at close of the day there were 180 rabbits less in this bathwick than when the sun arose in the morning. There will be another hunt on next Saturday, and all members of the Ancient Order of Exterminators in good sitting will convene at Leonard Parker's place at 9 o'clock on the morning of that day, prepared to do battle to the common enemy.
The Lew Johnson Company will give a performance at Kroger's Hall on next Friday night. Of this troupe an exchange says:
The Lew Johnson Colored Company gave an entertainment at Dov's Opera House, on Monday evening last, to a large audience. The selections were new and very funny, the audience being frequently convulsed with laughter. Singing and dancing were the main features of the evening, the entire troupe being first class artists in this line and their equal is seldom seen in this part of the country. The "Swance River" was sung in a style that approached the sublime. As a talented, mirth-provoking troupe, the Lew Johnson Colored Company is a success—From an Evanson, Wyo., Exchange.

The shipment of oranges from Anaheim by private parties has been quite brisk during the week. There appears to be a good demand for the fruit, and many growers regret having sold their crops before the season on fairly opened.

Berlin, March 3 — The new German Reichstag opened today. The Emperor's speech was read from the throne. In it he says he is gratified at the benevolent disposition the people have shown toward the empire. The foreign policy of the empire is continually directed to the maintenance of peace with all the powers, and especially with Germany's neighbors. The foreign relations of the government are the same when the last Reichstag was opened. If the Reichstag, without its institution or division, gives unanticipated expression to a resolve that the nation will put forth efforts to its full strength in full power, now and at all times against any attack upon their territory, such resolution, even before carried out, will materially strengthen the guarantee of peace and restore the dignity of the late parliamentary debates have impaired. The Emperor feels assured that the Reichstag by its resolutions will oblige the federal government's national policy on a safe basis, and he derives from this conviction the confidence hope that God will please his effort to conserve the peace and security of Germany.
