Glue is made water-proof by first soaking it in water until it becomes soft, and then melting it with gentle heat in linseed oil. To remove varnish without injuring paint brush on spirits of ammonia or hartshorn which softens the oil, allowing of its being rubbed off easily. Whole cloves are now used to exterminate moth. It is said they are more effectual as a destroying agent than either tobacco, camphor or cedar snappers. The tuberose is now cultivated extensively as a field plant in Natal, South Africa, and so favorable is the climate that flowers in open air may be had every month in the year. When a can of preserved provisions is opened, and only a portion of its contents removed, the air acts upon the tin and solder, and causes the contents to dissolve portions of them. Marble often becomes dull in appearance from use. To make a polish for it, take one half ounce of magnesia, two ounces of oxalic acid, one pint of warm rain water. Use a white woolen cloth. To sweeten mostly barrels, throw in burning coals and then cold water. Public brewers wash their casks with lime and water mixed nearly to the consistency of paint; let it remain until dry, and then wash well with water. To take creases out of drawing-paper or engraings, lay the paper or engraving face downward, on a sheet of smooth, unsized paper; cover it with another sheet of the same, very slightly damped, and iron with a moderately warm flat iron. To make gold liquid for decorations about the home, uncolorize powder with gum water; a little spirit of wine will make it keep better. The proportions are easily ascertained by trial. Pieces of glass may be put in the bottom to assist in shaking up the heavy powder, which settles at the bottom. The Empress of Austria taste for food spikes is by no means exceptional among ladies of rank in Austria and Hungary. A lady whose age on the Crown Princess accounted her husband on a shooting expedition, and proved herself to be an excellent shot. The imperial hunts in Hungary are always frequented by a number of ladies belonging to the higher court circles. As a matter of fact, the predilection of the Empress for hunting is fully shared by the ladies of the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy. Ordinary flat embroidery may be pressed with a hot iron on the wrong side, laying the piece on a damp cloth; but, as this treatment would ruin raised work, like ribbon embroidery, arasene work, etc., a better way is to lay a wet towel on the table or the carpet; spread over this the piece of work, right side up, and tack tightly to the floor, taking care to draw it tight enough to remove all wrinkles; let it dry in this position. Some draw work of this kind by holding it over boiling water and steaming it, and then tack out on the carpet as desired. Roses and all flowers containing perfumed oils may be made to yield their aromatic qualities by steeping the petals in a saucer of water and setting it in the sun. The water should be soft or rain water, and a sufficient quantity allowed for evaporation. In a few days a film will cover the water. This is the essential oil of the flower—every particle is impregnated with the odor. It must be taken open carefully and put in tiny vials which should remain open till all the remaining water is evaporated. A few drops of this will perfume glove boxes, apparel etc., and will last a long time. An extremely pretty novelty is the Italian growing vases. Although they are a new invention, they have received general patronage and approval for their simple yet beautiful effect. The vase must be soaked under water for at least twelve hours; then as soon as taken out of the water, and while it is still wet, cover it with the seed (which is supplied with the case) by sprinking it on; taking care not to leave any part uncovered; then at once fill it with water; and every morning refill it if the water be decreasing. In a few days the vase will be covered with a beautiful green foliage. This is very effective, making a handsome ornament. These porous pots are said to be healthy in a room, as the herbs growing on them absorb damp and foul air—Women's Magazine. A rabbit-proof fence is to be constructed by the Government of Queensland, Australia, along the boundary of that province for a distance of four hundred miles, to shut out rabbits from New South Wales. The Princess I.D. New York In the days of was said that lady of the premier girl with her excellence reason the latter long visits; but the ment at least is in no profuse cordial ladies for the prince sentiment upon not discord between the mess had no strong Ottawa. Figures Which Astonish Unsophisticated Cultivators of Country "Garden Sass." [New York Sun] In many offices around and in the big produce exchange there are numerous little shallow boxes piled on window sills, tables, and desks. The boxes are generally filled with corn and wheat and other grain, samples of the stocks held in the big elevators and stores along the riverfronts and in the fleets of canal boats in the Brooklyn basins. A grain dealer was running his hand through a sample of No. 1 spring wheat when a man said: "Good as gold." "Yes, but unlike some other farm products, it is not worth its weight in gold." "Squashes, for instances?" Perhaps you would like to know something about high-priced farm products. There is a new variety of oats called the Clydesdale. A measured bushel weighs fifty-one pounds. While they will not retain their full weight in this country, they will double the market value of the product of an oatfield. The enterprising farmer pays $50 a bushel for the seed. There is the new Life spring wheat which sells for $2 a bushel, and the new style of field corn known as Chester Mammoth and Golden Deer sells for about the same. In the matter of garden seeds, the farmer must pay prices that make him squelal host fear a Newars man brought out what is known as Henders's white plum celery. Unlike common celery it does not need to be banked up to whiten the leaves and, what is more, these leaves are as much like soffh feathers as any thing you can imagine. During the American Institute fair the plants-on exhibition were frequently torn to pieces by guests who used the leaves for button hole bonnets. The seedman who is introducing the plant paid $100 for a small truck load of the plants, and he now sells the seed at $9 a pound. "A new French bean is selling at 50 cents a quart. The new lilopseat bean seed sells for $2.00 a pound while the seed of the new lettuce called the Oak leaf sells for $8.00 an ounce. Even a new variety of parsley is high priced; the seed of the style called Amerad's selling for $2.00 a pound. "You sarcastically mentioned the squash. That was because you didn't know all about squashes. There was a specimen of a new squash on exhibition in this town last fall for several weeks that weighed 223 pounds. Its flavor was excellent as its taste was enormous. The seeds obtained from this big squash sell for a cents apiece or so an ounce. "But when you want to find farm products that are really worth their weight in gold you must take the lower seeds raised by the farmer's wife. This year there is a great variety of new flowers. It would bewilder you to name them. These seeds are always sold by the Amateur Critics of the Orchestra. [A New York Paper.] A student of human nature who attended a Philharmonic concert recently was filled with joy and wonder by the display of learning made by two ladies sitting behind him. The student did not know a great deal about music though he felt reasonably sure about telling the difference between a funeral march and a galop, and consequently he drank in with great avidity the flee instruction which came from behind him. The conversation began when Morart's "Magic Fume" overture was half played. How funny? Do you hear anything of the flute? "Not a thing," "well, if I had been writing an overture about a flute, I would have made the instrument more prominent." "So would I, but just look at the fur on that woman's coat?" "Isn't it lovely?" "Yes, I wonder how much it cost?" "What, the overture?" "No, the fur." "O, I mean the music." "O, yes, of course; what are they playing now?" "Here it is, Air de bateur, Orfee et Jurydice." It has a dance of the furies in it. I should think furies would want to dance. Then there was silence for a little space. Soon the band played the allegretto from Bethoven seventh symphony. When it was finished one lady said to the other: "How sweet and simple." "Yes, but that wasn't a symphony it is longer than that I know." "Well, what was it?" "Why this thing here, see?" "Dance of the Furies?" "O, yes, that's what it must have been." Soon a lady appeared and sang two Schlertt songs. "I don't think much of those songs; do you?" "No, but they say he is a great song writer." "I don't see it, now they're going to play the overture to William Tell." "What is that instrument that is beginning it?" "Good gracious, dear, dear don't you know? Why that's a bass violin." Silence reigned until the lovely English horn solo began. What kind of a thing is that playing now? "Well, don't know exactly. It isn't a clarinetet, is it?" "No," "It's a bassoon, I guess." By and by the orchestra began Gounod's "Funeral March of a Marquet." It begins with a tutti passage ending with a crash on the symbols. The two ladies jumped. "My goodness! That don't sound like a funeral march does it?" "That's what's on the programme." "Well, the man must have died suddenly." How Tourists Avoid Annoyance. A foreign journal calls attention to the fact that it is no longer fashionable for Europeans of wealth and leisure to travel over the routes that are open to all who have time and money to spend. It is regarded as vulgar "to trace in" the cities and towns described in the guide books or to travel on regular railway and steam-boat lines. People who regard themselves as members of select caredo not wish "you sarcastically mentioned the squash That was because you didn't know all about squashes There was a specimen of a new flesh on exhibition in this town last fall for several weeks that weighed 226 pounds Its flavor was excellent as its taste was enormous The seeds obtained from this big squash sell for a cents apiece or so an ounce. The Princess Louise In Canada. New York Herald In the days of her royal highness it was said that lady Macdonald, the wife of the premier, disrupted the leadership with her excellency and that for this reason the latter left Canada on three long visits, but the last part of the statement, at least is inadequate There was no profuse cordiality between the two ladies, for the princess wasted to miss a sentiment upon nobody, but there was no discord between them. Her royal highness had no strong intention to lead in Ottawa. He was happier in the wildernesses of the Nassauphaia fishing for salmon in the pools, or making sketches at the dawn or as the sun went down among the hills. She had no strong reason to love the people as a whole for the chilling hauteur of the secretary Colde Winton, was visited upon the head of herself and her husband Before she was well settled on the banks of the Lilac snoring and unkind criticism came from the press, and when she was dragged along the rough high road by madened horses, her ear torn and her head pounded until she became insensible, no word of sympathy was spoken for the evil guilt of the secretary turned the stream of sympathy into gait So the prince did not remain overmuch of her time among Canadians. Some said she had no womanly tenderness and that she was "strong minded," but they did not understand. She simply was an artist, and chose for her pleasure the trees of the wilderness and the salmon of the rushing streams. Sample of Japanese English. People who regard themselves is members of select circles do not wish to join the companies that annually visit London, Paris, New and Rome They avoid the gay capitals in winter and the seaside resorts in summer They are on the loot for places that are not frequented by the common people. The Soul's Anesthetic. 24th Ave But men can get hardened to anything I used to look up on a corpse with awful solemnity But during the war the sight became so common that I could almost step up on the deck to avoid a ditch or a mud hole. I have seen soldiers who were kind and calm at home rise the pockets of the dead stricken on battle fields and chuckle over their findings Just so it is with the rice They set utterly hardened to poverty and passion They will weep over parietic sitting in the theatre but laugh at scenes as sad on the streets They will shed tears of sympathy for little No but carelessly pass by the boggar children onthehighway. An excellent polish for hard wood furniture and floors, and one which requires very little rubbing, is said to be found in a very simple mixture of sweet oil and vinegar, using twice as much vinegar as oil. If the wood looks very dull and dry, it will be well to rub once with linseed oil and beeswax boiled together, but the sweet oil and vinegar for constant use is proved good by experience.
